Summer Term 2023

Welcome fromtheRector

The Summer Term has certainly lived up to its name in recent weeks with the mercury hitting the heady heights of 27°C as the final weeks of term unfolded.

The heat didn’t stop our pupils and staff and it’s been constant activity at both the Junior and Senior School with all the usual Summer Term highlights: sports days, leavers dances, Young Musicians of the Year Final, tennis, cricket, athletics and of course, Junior and Senior Prizegiving.

Families of both Junior 4 and Junior 6 children were invited into the Junior School this term for their respective ‘Sharing their Learning’ events: a Sustainability Social for J4 and WWII for J6. Continuing the theme of leading on their learning, the Digi-Leads Committee hosted the School’s very first Digital Learning Fair. Moving away from technology and into the great outdoors, J6 had a fantastic few days at Newlands Adventure Centre in the Lake District, getting out of their comfort zones and trying many new pursuits.

Meanwhile, at the Senior School, S1 enjoyed an action-packed five days on the island of Raasay, complete with kayaking, hill-climbing and abseiling. With our most Senior pupils on SQA exam leave for a large proportion of this term, our younger cohorts had the run of the Senior School following Junior Exams, trying their hand at lots of different skills and visiting many new places across Activities Week. A cast of Transitus-S3 pupils starred in a three-night run of ‘Macbeth on the Loose’, a humorous introduction to Shakespeare.

As our Sixth Years’ time at the High School comes to an end, we’ve created plenty of memorable moments on the Leavers’ Course, culminating in the infamous mystery trip! We wish our Leavers every success and we look forward to welcoming you back to the School in the not too distant future.

This time of year provides a moment of reflection on all that has been accomplished across the session, individually and collectively. I am very proud of our hard-working pupils and staff who continue to ensure HSOG climbs Ever Upwards in all that we do.

I hope you enjoy reading Highlights and I wish you and your family a very happy summer holiday.

School News

The Summer Term at HSOG has been an incredibly busy one. From exhilarating trips and funfilled activities, to exciting sports days and incredible end-of-term events, pupils relished the chance to indulge in the joy of learning during a sun-soaked final few weeks of the session.

Return to the Battlefields

A group of 94 pupils and members of staff headed to Belgium to visit sites of historic significance from the First World War, marking the first Battlefields trip since the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a base in Ypres, the party participated in a sombre trip that included a visit to the trenches at Sanctuary Wood, Hooge Crater and Essex Farm Cemeteries, and Thiepval Memorial, which contains the names of 72,000 men who were listed as missing during The Battle of the Somme.

Pupils also represented the School at the Menin Gate Ceremony, with two pipers, Rory (S4) and Tom (S3), performing during the event, while Estella and Oran of Fourth Year laid a wreath at the gate on behalf of the School.

Digi-Leads Learning Fair

J1-J6 pupils hosted a fair to show off their digital learning skills with the rest of the Junior School in June.

30 pupils, making up the Junior School Digi-Leads Committee, illustrated their learning at a number of different stations. They touched upon valuable digital skills such as coding and animation, as well as presenting their very own TED talk on the vital importance of digital wellbeing and limiting screen time.

This learning fair followed months of active learning that has seen our Digi-Leads Committee visit the Apple Store to better understand cutting edge technology, and The John Shaw Science Wing at the Senior School, where they had the opportunity to explore virtual reality alongside Senior School Digi-Champions!

Earlier this year, the School was awarded the Digital Wellbeing Award, part of the Digital Schools Award, which recognises schools helping children to maximise their 21st century digital skills, whilst remaining safe and responsible online. J4 Sustainability Social

Junior 4 planned and hosted a memorable ‘Sustainability Social’ event for their families in April.

The event and exhibition was designed and executed by Junior 4, alongside their class teachers and teaching assistants, empowering pupils to demonstrate their learning with family members in fun and memorable ways.

Pupils put on an introductory assembly about the ‘Protecting the Planet’ topic they had been hard at work on all session. Parents were then invited to visit their exhibition which showcased eye-catching displays including letters, posters and infographics that detailed plastic pollution, food miles and sustainable fashion, amongst other topics.

Finally, guests visited ‘The Forest of Promises’, where they were challenged to make a commitment for positive change towards the future of the planet.

What an excellent learning event - inspiring, informative and eye-opening, helping to educate us all about the various ways in which we can do our part to protect our beautiful planet!

Poppy Prizewinner

Second Year pupil, Maya, won the Poppyscotland ‘The Day War Started - My Secret War Diary’ writing competition in the secondary school category.

Individuals were asked to imagine they were living in a country where a war has broken out and write a diary entry describing how their life has changed, with Poppyscotland encouraging young people to share their personal responses to conflict and Remembrance.

Maya and Louie, also of Second Year, were selected by a panel of judges from 140 entries from throughout the country to be two of the six finalists in their category. The overall winner was decided by public vote.

Commenting on Maya’s winning entry, judges said:

Maya uses a style and format appropriate to purpose and audience and it is written exactly like a diary entry. She describes events making feeling and reactions clear, for example, ‘the sound of death and destruction’. She engages the reader through the use of language, style, tone and asking questions.”

In addition to two HSOG finalists, seven additional pupils from the school were shortlisted in the last 16 for their entries. A fantastic effort from our High School historians!

Transitus Bake Off

Always a highlight of the School calendar, The Transitus Bake Off Final took place in the HFT Department in June.

Keen amateur bakers donned their aprons and chef hats, looking to impress our expert guest judges, retiring Senior School Nurse, Mrs Jane Sim, and Rotary Young Scottish Chef of the Year for 2019, Amy of S6.

After a brilliant final during which all finalists worked methodically to create outstanding bakes, our judges were able to crown their winner.

Congratulations to Kayleigh who dazzled with her delicious steamed pudding and homemade custard. Well done, too, to Ava, whose tasty scones saw her finish as runner up, and third placed Emma, who baked a memorable Victoria sponge.

All the World’s a Stage

The final fortnight of the session saw an incredible level of musicianship on display at the final of the Young Musicians of the Year competition, whilst our young thespians took to the stage to perform an acclaimed three night run of the Junior Drama Production, ‘Macbeth on the Loose’.

Young Musicians of the Year

A number of Senior School musicians participated in an evening of immense musical talent at Old Anniesland during the final week of the session.

With four awards for the most exceptional individual and ensemble vocal and instrumental performers, as well as the Rising Star Award for the most talented Transitus-S2 musicians, there really was plenty up for grabs on the night!

With an incredible standard of musicianship throughout the evening, our guest adjudicators, Mr Paul Philbert MBE (Principal Timpanist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra & Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Lecturer in Percussion) and Mrs Margaret Izatt (Scottish mezzo-soprano and Vocal Lecturer at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) had some incredibly tricky decisions on their hands!

After some extraordinarily difficult deliberations, they eventually came to a consensus on the winners. Congratulations to all who took part on a magical evening of HSOG music!

1st XI vs MCC

An Impressive Innings

Our young cricketers have enjoyed an accomplished few months at the wicket. The 1st VI cricket team were victorious at The Glasgow Academy Sixes competition, seeing off allcomers before defeating George Watson’s College in the final on a gloriously sunny day in late May.

The sun was still shining as we welcomed both the MCC and XL Club to Old Anniesland for annual fixtures against our 1st XI side. The 1st XI performed brilliantly, going undefeated over the two matches. A very creditable draw against MCC saw Ibrahim (S6) win the MCC Spirit of Cricket Award for his 64 runs while later in the term, the team went one better, defeating The XL Club by 7 wickets, with 13 overs to spare.

The 1st XI had a brilliant season, even making it to the Scottish Cup Finals Day in Edinburgh on the final Friday of term, eventually losing out in the semi final to an impressive Stewart’s Melville College team. All in all, an impressive few months for our cricketers!

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund is paramount to our fundraising efforts and truly demonstrates the impact philanthropy has on life at HSOG. Now in its tenth year, we have been humbled by the generosity of our High School community over the last decade. It is thanks to the support of our donors that the Annual Fund has raised over £1.4m since its inception.

As well as continuing to support our Bursary Fund to enable deserving young people to access the best education possible, this year’s Annual Fund is also supporting the School’s efforts to add a new electric minibus to its fleet of vehicles.

A small monthly donation goes a long way. For example, if approximately 100 donors gave just £10 per month (including Gift Aid), we could support an additional pupil on a 100% bursary.

With your support, collectively, we can make a difference to the lives and experiences of our pupils, both now and in the future.

To donate, visit www.hsogcommunity.co.uk/support/annual-fund

HSOG Online Shop

Have you visited our HSOG Online Shop? If not, we’d definitely recommend taking a few minutes to browse our selection of items. You might just find the perfect gift for friends or family members, or a treat for yourself!

You can choose from HSOG branded golf balls, tote bags, cufflinks and more. With the School’s 900th anniversary fast approaching, you might be interested in the books we have for sale detailing HSOG’s fascinating history. Giving Back

The Summer Term saw High School pupils give back to their community, with our Sixth Year musicians performing for local care home residents while pupils and staff laced up their comfiest shoes to take part in charity walks throughout Glasgow.

Music in the Community

The S6 Music and Wellbeing in the Community team went on tour in June, visiting the lovely residents of Erskine Home for Veterans in Bishopton and Mugdock House Care Home.

Pupils delivered two sing-along sessions that featured traditional Scottish music, songs from musicals and popular songs. The residents and staff had a wonderful time listening to our performers. HSOG pupils also had a memorable time as they enjoyed the chance to have a cuppa and a chat with the residents afterwards, learning all about the residents’ fascinating lives!

Further Fundraising Activities

A number of senior pupils and staff took part in the Kiltwalk’s 14-mile ‘Mighty Stride’, taking them from Clydebank to Balloch in late April and raising £890 for Achieve More Scotland, a charity that delivers programmes to improve young people’s physical, mental health and life chances.

Later in the term, all of Transitus donned the famous yellow caps as they participated in the ‘Go Yellow’ 5km charity walk in aid of The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, circumnavigating Bellahouston Park at the end of May and helping to raise nearly £2,000.

At the Junior School Ronald McDonald House were the recipients of nearly £400, raised from a very competitive charity football tournament in April and the Junior School Spring Concert.

Finally, our best wishes go to Team Zanzibar, who have raised nearly £6,000 to go towards their W.A.S.H. (Water and Sanitation and Hygiene) project at Kinuni School. They will be jetting off to Zanzibar very soon - good luck everyone!
