Highlights
Summer Term 2024

Welcome fromtheRector
Welcome to the Summer Term edition of Highlights , the final instalment of session 2023/2024.
Memorable learning is at the heart of a High School education and is key to the success of our pupils both inside the classroom and out. There is no term more packed with memorable moments than the Summer Term, particularly because it marks the end of a chapter for two particular year groups: our current Junior 6 and Senior 6.
Junior 6 have now spent their final days at the Junior School in Bearsden and were given a truly excellent send-off. We look forward to welcoming them, and our joiners, to the Senior School in August for Transitus, where new adventures await.
Meanwhile, Senior 6 leave behind their school days for good as they pursue their next chapter in life. It is a real honour and a privilege to have watched these individuals grow into kind, responsible, clever and empathetic young people, ready to take on the world. We wish them every success in the future - please keep in touch!
We are now halfway through our 900th anniversary and this term we have celebrated it in a number of ways as you’ll see within the pages of Highlights. The real pinnacle was a rousing Whole School Gala Concert at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall on Monday 17th June organised by the Music Department and External Relations Team. The musical talent on display was breathtaking and I’m incredibly proud of every single person from the Junior School and Senior School who took to the stage to perform.
I hope you enjoy reading Highlights and I wish you and your family a happy and relaxing summer holiday.

Tug-of-War Event at Senior School Sports Day

School News
The Summer Term is always a busy time at HSOG, with numerous trips, activities and sporting events taking place. Throw in a number of large-scale events commemorating the School’s 900th anniversary and the final few weeks of session 2023-24 truly became something unforgettable!
HSOG 900th Anniversary Civic Reception
The School community came together at Glasgow City Chambers on Thursday 18th April, with almost 200 people attending a civic reception celebrating the Schools’ 900th anniversary.
Hosted by the Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, and Glasgow City Council, guests enjoyed an unforgettable evening in the spectacular surroundings of the City Chambers, hearing from the Lord Provost and the Rector, as well as being treated to some incredible musical entertainment courtesy of the Senior School Music Department.

J3 Visit The John Shaw Science Wing
Junior 3 paid a special visit to the John Shaw Science Wing at the Senior School in May to carry out further research on their class topic, ‘ The Romans ’.
Our young learners were whisked back in time to Ancient Rome courtesy of immersive VR technology, and enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the history of the School, particularly enlightening in 2024, our 900th year of existence.
J3 also learned about an important former pupil, John Shaw (Class of 1966), whose generous £1.5m donation along with his wife, Kiran MazumdarShaw, Executive Chairperson and founder of global biopharmaceutical company Biocon, funded the transformation of the top floor of our new Science Wing back in 2022.
It truly was a day of memorable learning for our Junior 3 cohort, who had a fantastic time on their trip to Old Anniesland.

The Great Transitus Bake Off!
An annual highlight of the Summer Term calendar, t he final of our Great Transitus Bake Off sent sweet aromas around the corridors of the Senior School earlier this month.
Taking place on Wednesday 5th June, 14 Transitus pupils tested their skills in the kitchen, each creating a signature bake in the hope of impressing judges including Compass Chef, Salvedore, Isla J of Fourth Year and Rebekah dG of Third Year. Isla and Rebekah, who both competed in this year’s Future Chef Competition, displayed their excellent culinary knowledge whilst judging the final.
In the end, after tough deliberations, Luciana D was chosen as the overall winner for her mouthwatering raspberry cream meringues. Ivy M was runner up for her raspberry and orange rings, with Lucy M and Ted Q joint third for their lemon and orange cake, and lemon cupcakes, respectively.
Miss Moore, Head of HFT, said: “The standard of all competitors was outstanding and the level of skill and organisation on display exceeded all expectations.”

Sustainability Social
Junior 4 organised the annual ‘Sustainability Social’ for parents to attend in April, helping to pass on the message about the importance of Fairtrade and taking care of our planet!
In an interactive morning at Ledcameroch Road, children shared their learning about plastic pollution, Fairtrade and water wastage, using informative and exciting displays to grab the attention of visitors.
Yet another fun and frenetic ‘Sharing Our Learning’ event.

Our Ocean Experts!
Junior 1 pupils became deep sea explorers in May, taking their families on an adventure to the very depths of the ocean!
They welcomed parents and guests into their classrooms to share all that they have learned throughout their class topic, ‘Under the Sea’.
Everyone was entertained by an opening presentation packed with fascinating information about the ocean and the compelling creatures that live there
J1 pupils then displayed how their work in Drama, PE and Music had all linked into this theme, before taking their loved ones around the various pieces of ocean related work, ranging from phonics and writing to Maths and Science.
Well done Junior 1!

Updates from the Music Department
A number of High School musicians were part of the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Development Orchestra who played at Perth Concert Hall in April. Well done to Jamie M (cello), Michael S (trombone) (both S3), Caitlin K (violin & piano) (S2) & Lachlan T (bassoon) (S1) on taking part.

Kieran P (S6) (pictured right, with HSOG piano teacher & accompanist, Mr Tanti) put on an excellent performance of ‘Andante & Rondo’ on tenor saxophone at the end of April as part of the Scottish Young Musicians Independent Schools Competition, held at Wellington School in Ayr.
Kieran also performed in RSNO Video Games Music in Concert in June, singing a solo singled out in The Scotsman review as being “delivered with appropriately captivating angelic eeriness”. Finally, congratulations go to Haris A of Sixth Year who achieved a Grade 8 with Distinction on the drum kit during June’s Trinity Rock & Pop Music Exams.

Fourth Year pupil and recently crowned HSOG Young Instrumentalist of the Year, Maya M, performed beautifully throughout the School’s Civic Reception at Glasgow City Chambers in April. The melodic sound of her clarsach playing entertained nearly 200 guests at the event held in celebration of the School’s 900th anniversary.

Come and Try Music Event
Some of our youngest Junior School pupils met with instrumental instructors in April as they tried their hand at a variety of brass, woodwind, string and percussion instruments. From dabbling on the double bass to tooting on the trombone, pupils had great fun learning about what instruments they might like to pursue playing in the future!

Junior School Instrumental Concert
Our talented Junior School musicians went on to perform in the Instrumental Ensemble Concert on Monday 20th May.
In an unforgettable showcase of musical talent, there were performances from the Percussion & String Ensembles, the Wind Band, guitar groups, piper & chanter players and harpists, all led by our incredible Music Department.
Well done to everyone who worked so hard to put on this heart-warming and melodious evening!

Summer Term in the Great Outdoors
Newlands
Junior 6 pupils enjoyed a packed schedule of fun activities at Newlands Adventure Centre in May.
There was so much for J6 children to get stuck into - from hill climbing, kayaking and scrambling through rivers, to team building activities and the opportunity to scale an adventure course in the heights of the forest, it really was an incredible few days!
The images here provide a small flavour of the many exciting activities they took part in throughout a memorable week - what a send-off before heading into Transitus next session!

DofE
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Participants enjoyed a mixed bag of weather as they tested themselves on expeditions throughout Scotland this term.
Bronze, Silver and Gold candidates relished being out and about, enjoying the opportunity to traverse through stunning Scottish scenery, as well as heading out onto lochs in kayaks and canoes during challenging qualifying expeditions in early June.

Activities Week

The normal timetable was once again torn up as Transitus-S 3 pupils enjoyed the opportunity to take part in a number of activities, workshops and trips as part of Activities Week 2024.
Another memorable few days for the lower half of our Senior School saw them head out on exciting adventures, broaden their horizons during mind-expanding workshops and discover new talents during compelling in-school activities. Yet another jam-packed Activities Week - the perfect send-off before the mid-term break!
Raasay
As part of Senior School Activities Week, S1 pupils ventured to Raasay in May.
The annual trip saw two parties of First Year pupils spending five days each on the isle of Raasay. They loved taking in the sights, whether basking in sunshine or braving the rain (one group proved to be a little luckier than the other in this regard!), as they participated in funfilled outdoor adventures and worked together in invigorating team-building challenges, all topped off with the traditional pier jump to bring the trip to a chilly close!

Summer Sporting Stars

The best of the rest from our PE Department, including achievements in tennis, rugby, hockey, skiing and much more.
On Friday 31st May, the Senior Boys’ Tennis Team (pictured above) reached the final of the Scottish Secondary Schools’ Championships, hosted at George Watson’s College. Having seen off challenges from Perth Grammar and Stewart’s Melville College, the boys finally came undone against Strathallan School in a high quality final. Well done to the team for their excellent efforts - Callum P (Captain), Ferdinand H (both S6), Findlay P (S5), Tristan M (S4), Lucas N & Harry S (both S3).
Congratulations go to one of our younger tennis stars, Gregory P (J4) (pictured above right), who was part of the West of Scotland Boys U9 team who won silverware at the Junior County Cup North Area Finals in April, finishing as runners up on the day.
Some of our more senior players also competed for West of Scotland - well done to Tristan M (S4), Luisa C & Lucas N (both S3) who helped secure a win for the West of Scotland team in the U16 category of the Inter-District Tennis Tournament in early April.
During the Easter holidays, Harry P, captain of the School’s 1st XV, represented the U18 Scotland rugby squad in the 2024 Six Nations Festival. He featured in all three matches, in which Scotland defeated Georgia, lost to England and staged an incredible comeback against Italy, overturning a 0-17 deficit to win 20-17 - fantastico!
Harry’s younger brother Ben (S4) (pictured right) also excelled on the rugby pitches earlier this term. He had the honour of captaining the Glasgow Warriors U16 team in matches against Newcastle Falcons and Edinburgh Rugby at the end of April.
Evie M (S2) won the British Tumbling Challenge Cup Qualifier during the Easter break, meaning she has qualified for the 13-14 years old competition at the British Tumbling Championships in Birmingham in July.
Good luck Evie!

In a very tight encounter, the Senior Boys’ Golf Team of Chris C (S6), Ben P & Harris M (both S4) achieved victory in the Area Final at the end of the Spring Term. A fore-midable effort from our boys!

HSOG Fest
We enjoyed the rub of the green on Saturday 1st June as the sun shone at Old Anniesland for HSOG Fest, a summer gala day that took the High School community all the way back to the good old days of Midsummer Madness!

Staff & Former Staff Homecoming Gathering
Staff and former colleagues came together at a special gathering at the end of May as part of our 900 events. What a privilege it was to welcome back so many familiar faces who have been a part of our recent history to celebrate alongside those currently raising the high tradition before they too pass it gloriously on Click here to read all about it!

The 900 Campaign
In this 900th anniversary year, everyone in the High School community has been able to reflect on the School’s illustrious past and take pride in what this great school and its pupils have achieved and contributed to Glasgow, this country and beyond.
The 900 Campaign provides an opportunity to increase the current level of bursary funding, ideally to double the funds which the Educational Trust manages. The High School today is a modern thinking and ambitious school with excellent facilities, consistently one of the highest achieving in the country academically, maintaining the highest standards in the arts, sport and culture and offering a wide range of experiences in and out of the classroom. Thus the aims of the 900 Campaign reflect this also. Our innovative START programme provides learning opportunities in design thinking and entrepreneurship, replicating the journey of a startup business, with pupils collaborating on projects that take teams from initial ideation to investor presentation, before culminating in a pitch competition with internship prizes. Developed in partnership with leading academics and industry experts, START aims to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world and to answer the calls for more real-world, problem-based learning in schools. While initially the benefit is to our own pupils, our aim as the programme develops is to offer this opportunity to pupils throughout Glasgow and beyond.
The High School is committed to being a place of education within sustainable, net-zero and environmentally conscious campuses. Having already been awarded our fifth Eco Schools Scotland Green Flag, our aim is to be net-zero by 2050. We hope to implement innovative and eco-friendly initiatives, upgrade our infrastructure and develop sustainable practices into every aspect of school life. Specifically, through the 900 Campaign, we can invest in solar panels and replace existing heating systems dependent on fossil fuels with more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternatives in both the Junior and Senior School, relying on carbon offsetting where this is not possible.
Play your part, donate today.

Giving Back
The Summer Term saw High School pupils give back to their community and do their bit to support worthwhile causes, including Transitus taking part in the annual ‘Go Yellow’ 5km Charity Walk and Junior School pupils tackling the London Mini Marathon.
Fundraising Efforts
HSOG pupils have continued to raise money for charities dear to their hearts this term.
Junior School pupils raised more than £1,000 for WWF and CHAS through fundraising events during the Summer Term, including all Junior School pupils walking, running or scooting the London Mini Marathon (pictured right), and generous donations from the Junior School Mini Instrumental Ensembles Concert in May

Elsewhere, Transitus pupils (pictured below) joined other Glasgow schools in taking on the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice ‘Go Yellow’ 5km Walk in Bellahouston Park at the end of May. Their efforts helped to raise a superb total of £1,893.80 for the charity.

Bike & Hike for Teenage Cancer Trust
Head of Geography & Modern Studies, Miss Cowan, alongside her brother, Keith, will be undertaking a six day, 170 mile Coast-2-Coast Bike and Hike Challenge this summer, raising funds for Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of their 15 year-old nephew, Beck, who sadly passed away in November 2023 following a rare terminal brain tumour.

Their challenge sees them set out from Fort William on Monday 22nd July, finishing just south of St Cyrus six days later. Miss Cowan wishes to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust to ensure others benefit from the help and support which Beck and his entire family received, a thank you to the charity for everything they do for teenagers facing this cruel illness.
If you would like to support them with their fundraising challenge, please click here to visit their JustGiving page, or visit: www.justgiving.com/page/coast-2-coast-for-beck

Mrs Khaira-Bhopal, mother of Anoakh in Junior 1, was welcomed to the Junior School in June. She took the time to talk with J1 -J3 children to teach them all about the Sikh religion.

1st Year Modern Languages pupils made their own ‘ muñecas quitapenas ’, or Guatemalan worry dolls, from traditional wooden pegs, wool and scraps of material, a low-budget, environmentally friendly cultural activity which meant time away from jotters and screens, as well as a chance for pupils to create something memorable.

As part of our 900th anniversary celebrations, Junior 1 pupils interviewed Anya, Thom & Emma from the Senior School Captains’ Committee, quizzing them on their favourite things about the High School! What a fun experience not only for our J1 cohort, but for our S6 pupils too!

A very delicate operation saw every pupil and member of staff at our Junior and Senior Schools gather together on the pitches of Old Anniesland on Tuesday 11th June for a whole school photograph, a great way to remember our 900th anniversary!

The Senior School played host to the Junior School Tennis Tournament at the end of May. Congratulations to all who took part in a brilliantly contested event. The overall winner of the boys’ competition was James M (J6), while Rebecca P (J6) was victorious in the girls’ competition.

The Class of 2024 had a wonderful time at their Leavers’ Dance on Thursday 20th June. They came together, one final time, for a night of merriment, dinner and dancing at Old Anniesland - a poignant evening that will live long in the memories of our departing Sixth Year pupils.

The end of the 2024 SQA Exams also marked the retiral of our Chief Invigilator, Pat Mories, after 36 years in the post. Pat ( pictured fourth from left ) will be known to generations of High School pupils who have benefited from her efficiency and organisation over the years. Farewell!
