Spring Term 202 5

Welcome fromtheRector

In the course of this term, one word and feeling keeps nudging at me – admiration.

When you consider the following pages of this issue of Highlights, displaying an incredible variety of activity and pupil success, one can only admire the sheer endeavour and commitment of pupils and staff, with the support of parents and families, in enabling such an incredible tapestry of experience and opportunity. This admiration is all the more, given the present times the School community, as a whole, are having to navigate.

From colourful confident drama productions, ongoing significant sporting success and everimpressive levels of participation, to extensive musical highlights, doing good through charitable activity and leading educational innovation via START, this Spring Term has once again strongly reflected the values of a High School education and the enthusiasm for opportunity and learning expressed by our young people every day.

At this time I wish to thank our wonderful pupils, our incredibly industrious staff and all High School families for your support, engagement and commitment. You certainly all have my admiration.

May I wish the School community a restful and refreshing Spring and Easter holiday.

School News

The sun has been shining during the Spring Term, with Junior and Senior pupils enjoying a memorable few months at HSOG. The following stories provide a snapshot of life at the School, from impressive individual achievements and unforgettable events, to the unquestionable value of collaborative working.

Green Machine!

The High School of Glasgow recently gained it’s sixth consecutive Eco Schools Green Flag Award, the internationally recognised achievement for schools committed to Learning for Sustainability.

This award was gained in recognition of our pupils and staff successfully illustrating the ways in which they have embedded sustainability across both the curriculum and day-to-day school life in both our Junior and Senior Schools. Great work everyone!

Wellbeing Week ‘25

Unwavering support to ensure positive mental health amongst pupils is always a top priority at the High School. That’s why, every year, we shine a spotlight on physical and mental wellbeing during our annual wellbeing weeks, taking place at both the Junior and Senior School.

Pupils and staff enjoyed participating in engaging assemblies, took part in a number of craft-based workshops and got out into the great outdoors, including fun trips to the local park, promoting mindfulness amongst our youngest learners.

Senior pupils had the opportunity to hear from wellbeing experts, as well as taking part in important workshops that touched upon vital topics including neurodiversity, mental health and the impact of online behaviour.

There were so many initiatives on offer throughout this memorable wellbeing week, we simply couldn’t list them all here!

Music News

The Music Department continues to flourish, with High School musicians impressing out in the wider world!

The Transitus-S3 Upper Voice Choir and Senior School Chamber Choir, featuring a total of 60 vocalists from S2-S6, were successful in their respective competitions at the Glasgow Music Festival in March. Performing at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, the Chamber Choir competed in the School Choirs – Mixed Voices category, with their performances of ‘Ubi Caritas’ by Ola Gjeilo and traditional song ‘The Cuckoo’ gaining the judges vote to win the Mixed Voices competition. Meanwhile, the Transitus-S3 Choir took to the stage in the School Choirs – S3 and Under section. Their performance of ‘Winds’ by Larysa Kuzmenko and ‘Street Seller’ by Bob Chilcott saw them return to Old Anniesland with the Herald Challenge Trophy. Both choirs were expertly conducted by Miss Alison McNeill, with beautiful piano accompaniment from Mr Archie Morris.

Seven senior musicians have been chosen to represent the prestigious National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Development Orchestra this year, making up more than 1/10th of the entire orchestra. This is a remarkable feat, showcasing the immense talent within our Music Department! Congratulations to those participating this year – Minnie B-W (trombone) (S5), Catherine I (violin), Jamie M (cello) (both S4), Caitlin K (violin) (S3), Elizabeth I (violin), Lachlan T (bassoon) (both S2) and Hailey G (cello) (S1). The National Youth Pipe Band of Scotland (NYPBS) will also have High School representation throughout 2025 in the form of Sixth Year pupil Rory S and Robbie L of Fourth Year.

Representation in national music groups doesn’t end there though – the National Youth Choir of Scotland (NYCOS) Training Choir will benefit from the melodious talents of Fifth Year vocalists Sophie H and Stella M, while Theo S (S4) and Jacob S (S2) are part of the NYCOS Boys’ Choir

Transitus teamed up with Scottish Opera to perform an ‘Opera in a Day’ for their parents in February. ‘The Tale o’ Tam o’ Shanter’ was expertly told via the medium of song and dance by our enthusiastic Transitus cohort, led by experts from Scottish Opera, alongside support from our Music Department – a fantastic team effort, culminating in an unforgettable performance for our community to savour!

The START of Something Special

The START Pitch Final took place at Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday 25th March. This acted as the culmination of our project-based learning programme which harnesses the tools and mindsets of design, entrepreneurship and storytelling to bring the experience of participating in a startup incubator.

This year’s cohort consisted of eight teams from four Glasgow schools: The High School of Glasgow, John Paul Academy, Knightswood Secondary School and St Thomas Aquinas Secondary School.

Founded by Mr Philip Ford, Director of Innovation, the weekly course spanned nine months, during which pupils were tasked with forming startup businesses which identified real-world problems they wanted to solve, with access to experts at every stage. The programme culminated in their business cases being delivered in a pre-seed ‘investment’ pitch to a panel of industry experts and a live audience. The panel included Evelyn McDonald, CEO of Scottish EDGE; Jillian MacBryde, Associate Principal, Entrepreneurship & Enterprise, University of Strathclyde; and Jessica Geddes-Scott, Executive Director at Morgan Stanley.

Well done to Mehik B (S6) for being awarded HSOG’s START Ignite Award, which recognises an individual who has made the greatest contribution to the programme from their respective school. Congratulations to ‘Independants’ from St Thomas Aquinas who won the overall Pitch Final for their business idea which marries tracking technology with jewellery to tackle violence against women.

Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits

Junior 6 were thick as forty thieves as they put on their Musical extravaganza of ‘Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits’ in March.

More than 250 members of the School community took in this two night production, with our Junior 6 classes taking it in turns to tackle the lead roles. It truly was an unforgettable couple of nights as our talented youngsters displayed their impressive singing, dancing and acting skills over the course of two incredible performances – truly not to be missed! Click here or on any of the images below to see and read more about yet another unforgettable Junior 6 production.

J4 New Lanark Excursion

J4 pupils felt like they had stepped back in time during their visit to New Lanark.

Illuminating their ‘Victorians’ class topic, the children experienced Ms Whitwell’s strict classroom, practicing cursive handwriting, solving arithmetic on slates and taking part in drill marches.

They also explored a replica of a millworker’s house, providing insight into how mills were managed and the conditions for workers in the 1800s.

It was a fascinating and valuable experience for all in Junior 4!

Scots Verse Competition

The Junior School Scots Verse Competition took place at Ledcameroch Road in February.

A massive congratulations to Felicity M (J5) who was first overall for her recitation of the poem ‘Miranda’ by Stephen Watt, as well as to our brilliant runners up, Cara P (J5) and Rory D (J4).

Well done to all pupils who took part, with a huge thank you to our judge, Mr Kenny Gray, former Depute Head at Douglas Academy.

From breathtaking views at the Arc de Triomphe and exploring world-famous artworks in the Louvre, to strolling through historic neighbourhoods in Montmartre and taking in the iconic Eiffel Tower, pupils relished the chance to put their language skills to practice in a real-world setting.

40 First and Second Year pupils hit the slopes at Alp 2500, a ski resort within the Pyrenees mountains in Northern Spain. They took on a variety of snow sports at La Molina, including skiing and tubing, before getting in from the cold to enjoy some ten pin bowling and karaoke - all in all, a trip to remember for our Senior School skiers!

Junior 5 pupils travelled to York for their muchanticipated residential trip in March. Over the course of four memorable days, pupils expanded their ‘Vikings’ knowledge, participating in a dig at the Archaeological Centre, visiting the iconic York Minster, becoming vikings for a day to fight off a Saxon invasion at Jorvik Viking Centre and indulging their sweet tooth during a guided tour at York’s Chocolate Story. An unforgettable experience!

Familiar Faces at HSOG!

On Saturday 29th March, Old Anniesland played host to a sporting competition featuring the great and good of the School community!

A number of hockey and touch rugby teams made up of former pupils, current pupils and current parents took to the playing fields for a morning of friendly, competitive fun! The weather wasn’t as kind as in 2024, but everyone was in excellent spirits as they watched the teams battle it out. Thank you to our competitors and spectators, with congratulations to current pupil team ‘Charvas’ for winning the hockey tournament and to the Class of 2020 former pupils for winning the rugby! To see more from the day, visit our community website by clicking here

Thanks a Million

At the start of June, Class of 2012 former pupil, Craig Durnin, will be undertaking a physical endurance challenge alongside 11 other rowers, including his wife Christina Clark, (Class of 2011) (pictured right).

By taking part in the Rowing a Million Metres for Children with Cancer event, the team hope to break the Guinness World Record of rowing one million metres, non-stop, on a Concept2 indoor rowing machine, a record which currently stands at what is fair to say a gruelling 61 hours, 50 minutes and 41 seconds!

Click here to read more about Craig’s fantastic fundraising effort.

High School London Club Reunion

Former pupils gathered at The Caledonian Club in Belgravia for the High School London Club’s Annual Reunion and Dinner in March.

This year’s event was particularly poignant for Rector, John O’Neill, as he attended his final London Club Dinner before his retirement in June. He was joined by School Captains, Estella and Ruairidh (pictured right), while former pupil Stuart Hudson (Class of 2000) was an excellent guest speaker, entertaining the crowd with tales from his time working in both the financial and political spheres.

Giving Back

We are proud to be able to give back to the community in which we live. This term, across our Junior and Senior Schools, fundraising activities have helped to raise huge sums for life-changing charities and incredibly important causes.

March for Nepal

Across the month of March, Junior School pupils swapped school shoes for trainers to raise the sum of £2,736 (and counting!) for schools in Nepal that have been destroyed by earthquakes over the last decade. The University of Strathclyde Engineering Department has been working with Community Impact Nepal to rebuild schools using new techniques, as well as employing and educating local people. Following an assembly about the work undertaken so far, the Junior School’s Global Citizenship Committee launched ‘March for Nepal’ a series of sponsored walks clocking up 7 miles (J1-J3) and 14 miles (J4-J6) across March – the distance many children in Katali, Nepal must walk to attend their nearest school whilst they await their school being rebuilt.

We can’t wait to share more information about this incredible fundraising initiative soon!

Further Fundraising has included ... A High School staple – the cake and candy stall – which once again saw pupils snap up some sweet treats to raise money for a great cause, with £220 going to LGBT Youth Scotland in March; £570 raised for the My Name’5 Doddie Foundation , courtesy of a Wellbeing Week quiz at the Senior School; a Junior School non-uniform day which helped to raise a wonderful £470.71 for Alzheimer Scotland

House Fundraising Weeks

Moore and Law Houses helped raise over £5,000 for wonderful charities during the Spring Term.

Moore House raised more than £3,100 at the end of February for the wonderful Frey Frey’s charity, a charity raising awareness of the challenges faced by families suffering from Tay Sachs disease, a very rare and life limiting genetic condition.

Click here to read more about their week.

Law House hosted the last of our fundraising weeks for session 2024-25 in late March, raising £2,107 for Finding Your Feet, a charity who support families affected by amputation or limb absence through a range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects designed to positively affect both physical and mental wellbeing.

Read more about Law’s fundraising week.

Our Term in Pictures

An unforgettable and fun-filled Spring Term at Old Anniesland and Ledcameroch Road.

Junior 3 enjoyed exploring what life was like in Roman times, including practicing marching drills, defence formations and trying out some soldier training. They learned a lot about the Roman Empire through a workshop from a ‘Roman Gladiator’!

For the second year running, Isla J, Niamh R and Rachel Y (all S5) were selected to be part of the Scotland U21 team taking part in the Peggy Bayer U21 Bridge Tournament. Competing against the other home nations, the Scottish side finished in fourth place at the competition in Newport, Wales.

Junior 4 wrote and followed instructions on ‘how to hold a paper airplane race’ during a writing lesson towards the end of the Spring Term, making sure to include bossy verbs and time connectives to meet their success criteria ...and of course, they had to take their colourful paper airplanes out for a test flight in the playground!

Our Chinese New Year celebrations saw members of the China Club and Mandarin classes sampling bubble tea and producing creative ‘Fu’ character calligraphy for the Year of the Snake, as well as making and tasting dumplings and sticky rice balls in celebration of the Lantern Festival, marking the end of the Chinese New Year festivities.

Junior 2 STEM Club kicked off 2025 by working in groups to engineer the tallest paper cup tower before coming together to build one truly giant tower! They have also had brilliant fun learning all about Sphero robots and using their iPads to attempt to guide them through tricky obstacle courses.

J3 pupils visited the Senior School campus for their Badminton Carnival in January. They learned all about different badminton serves and filmed each other playing rallies on their iPads.

We welcomed current parent Simran Panesar-Saggu and former HSOG pupil Lindsay Ogilvie, Partners at Scottish law firm Turcan Connell, to speak with pupils during a careers spotlight session in March. Simran is a Partner in private client law, while Lindsay is a Partner in family law. They generously shared how they carved out their successful careers in the legal sector, giving our pupils interesting insights on the sector before taking the time to answer questions from our prospective lawyers-to-be! A really insightful afternoon for our Senior School pupils.

The Junior School celebrated Book Week at the end of March, furthering our pupils’ love of reading! They relished the opportunity to take part in a multitude of reading-related activities and even treated themselves to a new book! A proportion of each book sale was reinvested in the Junior School’s library resources for everyone to enjoy in the future!

Senior pupils explored the EmpathyLab #ReadForEmpathy collection launched in February, which featured a number of books included in our own Rights Respecting Reads Challenge. Read on!

J2 bikers practiced their riding skills during their annual Bicycle Rodeo, working on their agility, balance and coordination, all fundamental skills developed as part of the Junior School PE programme.

The sun shone for us on Science Week at the beginning of March, allowing our Science Department to take full advantage. Dr Went and a number of our keen young scientists got the telescope out to safely search for sunspots. They then took their findings and compared them to a picture taken by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory at around the same time.

Senior School pupils enjoyed dumpling making and tasting sessions in the Modern Languages Department, all in celebration of Chinese New Year. They even had the chance to take in a Chinese flute performance and tea ceremony.

In March, Junior 3 were joined by Junior School Clerical Assistant and First Aider, archaeologist and published author on ancient Roman life, Mr Campbell – the ideal person to help further illuminate their ‘Romans’ class topic! The J3 class, including Mr Campbell’s grandson, learned all about Roman coins and their significance during that era, using one of his many books on Roman life to refer to throughout the topic.

Sports Squad, one of our Junior School extra curricular clubs, have been having a lot of fun during the Spring Term, including trying their hand at some pop lacrosse.

Junior 1 pupils visited Glasgow Science Centre’s Planetarium in early February as part of their ‘Day and Night’ class topic. They went on a truly unforgettable journey through our solar system to learn all about the cosmos in the Planetarium’s 360° 15 metre hemispherical dome.
