Autumn Term 2024 Highlights

Welcome fromtheRector
As the longest term of this school year draws to a close and we shortly bid farewell to 2024 and our year of 900th anniversary events and celebrations, this issue of Highlights seeks to capture the incredible participation, enthusiasm, energy and dedication of pupils across the School, enabled by my hardworking and committed colleagues and the support of you, our School families.
One of my favourite books on the purpose of schools, is ‘The Restless School’ by Roy Blatchford, a book which recognises that education is a process over time, that varied opportunities and challenges are required to develop character, and that school is not simply about course results, but the all-round cultivation of individuals ready for now and their future.
As the colour and vibrancy of this issue of Highlights hopefully communicates, life at the High School is one of restless opportunities for our children and young people to learn more about themselves, their peers and the wider world. I am continually humbled by how many of our pupils throw themselves into every aspect of their education and extracurricular world. Our ethos is one driven by participation and positive relationships, and I hope that like me, you witness aspects of this ethos in the following pages.
2024 has also been quite a year for the HSOG community near and far, as across the calendar year we recognised and celebrated the 900 year story of the School. It is quite exceptional for a school to have endured for 900 years, but the School of today owes so much to our former pupils initiative and generosity in the 1970s, as it does to our former pupils and School families of today.
As Rector I recognise that it is through a school community sustained by a belief in the central importance of providing children with an all-round education and commitment to always reaching beyond their grasp, that the High School has sustained itself in times of opportunity and challenge across its 900 years – and that remains true for the present and the future. To all High School families, I thank you for your support, your patience and your commitment.
After a busy term, I hope pupils, their families and my talented and dedicated colleagues will take time to rest, reflect and restore. I wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas and all good wishes come 2025.
Sursum Semper
John O’Neill
Rector

School News
High School pupils have excelled across a number of academic and extra-curricular disciplines during the past few months, with staff members also chipping in to support our 900th anniversary! The following is a mere snapshot of the countless exciting HSOG stories throughout the Autumn Term.
Bike Ride & Giving Day in Support of 900th Anniversary
9 days. 900 kilometres. And a number of brave members of staff!
Organised by Head of Senior School, Mr Kenneth Robertson, this gruelling cycling challenge saw staff members from across the Senior School pedal from Drewsteignton, Devon to the Senior School at Old Anniesland, all in aid of the School Bursary Fund.
This ran in tandem with the School’s very first Giving Day, shining a spotlight on the 900 Campaign and the importance of the Bursary Fund. With incredibly generous donations from the HSOG community, we helped to raise more then £92,000 including Gift Aid, a tremendous amount that will help to make a world of difference to many young people.

Sharing the Learning
Junior School pupils invited their loved ones to Ledcameroch Road over the past few weeks as they took up the opportunity to share all that they have learnt in their class topics throughout the Autumn Term.
Junior 6‘s memorable event took the form of a pitching final in the style of the BBC show, ‘The Apprentice’. Our J6 teams were tasked with convincing a judging panel of how they would transform the playground experience for all Junior School pupils as part of their ‘Enterprise’ topic.
Junior 4 hosted a pop-up Science Fair for their Sharing the Learning event which focused on their topic this term, the ‘Human Body’. They guided family members through workshops that showcased their knowledge in relation to the skeletal system, the digestive system, germs and diseases, and the circulatory system.
Junior 2‘s local community and enterprise project saw them invite their families to the School to sample the sweet treats on offer at ‘The High Scoop of Glasgow’ and to share their knowledge of starting a business. It might have been chilly outside, but everyone loved getting their hands on some delicious ice cream from Junior 2’s very own parlour!

START Design Day
We brought the four schools taking part in START this session together under one roof for the very first time to participate in a START Design Day hosted at Morgan Stanley’s Glasgow office.

START is an innovative design and entrepreneurship programme that develops the skills identified by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the World Economic Forum (WEF) as crucial for the future.
The Design Day saw pupils from the High School, John Paul Academy, St Thomas Aquinas and Knightswood Secondary Schools take part in a workshop delivered by Design Professor, Tom Inns, as well as participating in a Q&A session with Scottish EDGE CEO, Evelyn McDonald.
They relished the chance to understand more about early-stage business building and the realities and rewards of launching a start-up.
They took part in a number of sessions which involved mapping out initial business ideas, exploring a day in the life of the problem they are trying to solve and using De Bono’s approach to ideate information needs, challenges and solutions.

Every pupil from Transitus to S3 has played rugby for the School this term and every pupil who has chosen rugby in S4-S6 has also played a fixture for the School. This incredible representation resulted in an excellent showing in the Conference competition, with the High School finishing as worthy runners up to Marr College.
Excellent runs from both the 1st XV and U16 XV sides saw them reach the last four of their respective Scottish Shield competitions. Despite stirring performances, our teams both bowed out at the semi-final stage.

Giving Back
We are proud to be able to give back to the community in which we live. This term, across our Junior and Senior Schools, fundraising activities have helped to raise huge amounts for life-changing charities and incredibly worthy causes.
House Fundraising Weeks
Clyde and Bannerman Houses got the ball rolling on fundraising for 2024-25, with each hosting unforgettable fundraising weeks during the Autumn Term.
Clyde House raised an incredible £3,000 for DEBRA, a charity supporting those affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), during their fundraising week in October, the perfect way to head into the mid-term break.
Click here to read more about their week
Bannerman House hosted their fundraising extravaganza during the first week of December. Their festive feast of fundraising helped raise more than £2,500 for Glasgow’s Spirit of Christmas, a children’s gift campaign for those living in poverty within Glasgow and the surrounding regions.

Generous donations from Junior School families meant we were able to donate a number of harvest boxes to charity in October.
These parcels, filled with tasty treats, toiletries and other essentials, were kindly donated to Salvation Army’s William Hunter Lifehouse and East Dunbartonshire Foodbank. The efforts of the School community meant that over 250kg of goods were donated to these amazing charities!

Junior 6 pupil Teddy R and a number of his friends took part in the Glasgow Children’s Hospital sponsored 10km walk in September.
Their efforts helped to raise the incredible sum of £5,831.75 for the charity!
This also took Teddy’s personal fundraising efforts to over £6,000 for the charity that has helped him so much over the last few years.

Transitus H hosted the first of three Cake & Candy stalls, organised by our Transitus form classes, raising money for East Park Glasgow. Lots of home baking and treats were on sale throughout our three Transitus Cake & Candy sales during the latter part of the term, helping to raise money for our friends at East Park School – a very worthwhile cause and one the High School has supported for many years.

Junior 4 Teacher and former High School pupil Mrs Sacha Spinks (Class of 2008) completed the Great Scottish Run half marathon this term!
Mrs Spinks raised the tremendous sum of £2,685 for Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity!
She is pictured above with her son who is following in his Mum’s footsteps and is now in KG1 at Ledcameroch Road!

The Senior 6 boys and a number of staff members grew moustaches to help raise money for charity during ‘Movember’.
Fundraising events such as the M’Olympics, Bing’Mo, Soak the 6th Years and guess the number of moustaches in the jar helped get the School community involved. By the end of November, more than £600 had been raised, with all money going to important causes.
HSOG Community
Former Pupil Reunions
Throughout the Autumn Term we welcomed two year groups back to the Senior School to celebrate their respective milestone anniversaries.
This included the Class of 1974, celebrating their 50 year anniversary, and the Class of 2012, who marked 12 years since their time at Old Anniesland.

A celebration of 900 years of HSOG
No other school in Scotland can lay claim to 900 years of continuous education, and therefore 900 years’ worth of history, and so we felt it fitting to host a year-long calendar of events to mark the occasion.
Across 2024 we held 12 events attended by over 5,000 people, including former and current pupils as well as parents, colleagues and friends of the High School. It has been a joy to see so many members of our global school community coming together in celebration and reflection throughout the year.
The Gala Homecoming Dinner marked the commencement of the celebrations back in January, hosted at the iconic Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. Other events have included: a Sporting Festival, a Civic Reception, a reunion for current and former staff members, HSOGFest, a Whole School Gala Concert at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, a special service of Commemoration & Thanksgiving at Glasgow Cathedral, the 900km sponsored cycle in aid of the Bursary Fund, the High School’s very first Giving Day and a Whole School Expressive Arts Exhibition. Earlier this week, our anniversary celebrations reached their crescendo with a service of Nine Lessons and Carols at Glasgow Cathedral, back where the High School story began in 1124.
At the heart of this celebratory year has been the 900 Campaign, a fundraising campaign with three pillars: the School’s Bursary Fund, the development of START – a design-thinking and entrepreneurship programme, and ensuring our campuses are environmentally friendly places of learning.
We have been humbled by the generosity of spirit shown by the HSOG Community so far. Many of you have taken time out of your busy lives to attend our events and many have donated to the 900 Campaign, helping to uphold the historic tradition of giving at HSOG which stopped the School being consigned to the history books in the 1970s. To all of you, we extend our sincerest thanks.
With its ambitious targets, the 900 Campaign will continue beyond our 900th anniversary year as we strive to raise the high tradition and pass it glorious on, creating a lasting legacy from this year.

Community is one of the School’s values and, more than anything, this year has reinforced the power of the HSOG Community and what we can achieve when we come together. This is a year few of us will forget. Sursum Semper.
You can read a more detailed wrap-up of our 900th events and hear from Karen McDonald, Director of External Relations, as she reflects on this most recent chapter in our history by clicking here.
Our Term in Pictures
An unforgettable, educational and fun-filled Autumn Term at Old Anniesland and Ledcameroch Road.

They took part in a Fairtrade Fun Day, went on a trip to the local Co-op to investigate all the Fairtrade items in the shop and even came back to do some baking in school. Our Fairtrade enthusiasts have been encouraging their families and friends to make sure they always try to shop for Faitrade products!
