A High School of Dundee former pupil has had a lifechanging rugby experience in South Africa as part of a prestigious scholarship programme. Angus Fraser, Class of 2017, was one of three BT Sport Scottish Rugby Academy players who has spent five months immersed in the nation’s renowned rugby culture at the high-performance training facility at Stellenbosch University, after being awarded the coveted John Macphail Rugby Scholarship for 2017. Angus, who began playing mini rugby with Dundee Eagles, before representing the High School, the FP club side and Scotland U18, was understandably thrilled. He said, ‘the call totally came out of the blue that I had been put forward and accepted to go to South Africa for five months as part of the scholarship. I phoned my mum and dad straight away as I was shaking with excitement.’ During his time in South Africa, Angus made the most of the opportunities presented to him and worked extremely hard on developing his rugby, using state of the art facilities. The Scholarship programme aims to send some of Scotland’s most promising young players to other parts of the world to

further their development in new environments, with different coaches, fresh challenges and at world-class facilities. With previous recipients having included the current Scotland Captain John Barclay, previous national skipper Grant Gilchrist, and current internationalists Jonny Gray, Finn Russell and Adam Ashe, hooker Angus will be following in some notable footsteps. Head of Rugby and Elite Sports Development at the High School of Dundee, Phil Godman, was delighted for Angus. He said, ‘you only have to look at some of the previous players who have received this award, to realise what an achievement it is.’ The Macphail Scholarship programme, which was created in memory of ex-Scotland Internationalist John Macphail (19491951) and is funded by the Robertson Trust, is now in its 13th year. Scottish Rugby Technical Director, Stephen Gemmell, added: ‘thank you to the Robertson Trust and Macphail family for their continued support of Scottish Rugby and in helping some of our most promising young players.’ The High School of Dundee wishes Angus all the best for what looks set to be a very successful future.
