Michael Samson FP precariously scales the heights for picture perfection
Michael Samson (Class of 1992), is well known for his Contemporary Scottish landscape paintings and drawings which explore expressive landscapes and seascapes throughout Scotland. Michael lives and works in the North East of Scotland; his paintings record the passing of time and the seasons. After leaving the High School of Dundee, he studied Fine Art at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, then toured Europe on a travelling scholarship with the Royal Scottish Academy. After returning to complete a Post-Graduate Diploma in Art and Design and a Masters Degree in Fine Art, he now teaches, demonstrates and exhibits throughout Scotland. Michael recently scaled the heights of Cuillin Ridge, on the Isle of Skye, to sketch the beautiful view from the summit. The mountains of Cullin Ridge rise up dramatically from the sea creating formidable, enclosed sea lochs, with the absence of foothills enhancing their vast scale. Many iconic views of Scotland are centred here, whether Sgurr nan Gillean soaring above Sligachan, Loch Scavaig and the Cuillin Ridge from Elgol, or Bla Bheinn above Torrin. Speaking about his work, Michael has said ‘our pace of life dictates that we observe our world through a veil, failing to pause and enjoy the depth and colour of our experiences. In producing these drawings and paintings, it was my intention to experience each location as deeply as possible in all moods and conditions, at different times of the day and season. I find that completing the work on location expresses the passing moments with rawness; there are few artistic ‘tricks’, just an honest response to what I see and feel.’ For more information on Michael and his work, please visit www.michaelsamson.co.uk.
