Last year’s Build Boston at the World Trade Center has now expanded to Boston Convention and Exhibition Center as ABX.

Boston - ArchitectureBoston Expo (ABX) will be at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center from November 14 to 16, boasting the most comprehensive education program and largest marketplace for the design and construction industry in New England.

ABX offers over 175 professional development opportunities, covering a range of topics from building technology to design, software, social sustainability, and code. Led by some of the biggest names in the industry, this is the most challenging conference program in the country for the AEC professional. Tours are also provided, allowing attendees an inside look into some unique and interesting buildings in Greater Boston, including the recently re-opened Tea Party Museum, Hostelling International, and the MassArt Tower Building.

The tradeshow and conference launches on Wednesday morning with Speaking of Architecture, an opening plenary panel discussion moderated by Renée Loth of ArchitectureBoston Magazine and Robert Campbell FAIA of the Boston Globe. Panelists are Nader Tehrani, Peter Kuttner FAIA, Andrea Leers FAIA, David Lee FAIA, and William Rawn FAIA, five of Boston’s most talented and accomplished architects. The opening session is free to all ABX attendees.

ABX expects more than 15,000 attendees in Hall C of the BCEC to visit the 400 building product and service vendors.

In addition to hosting a thriving marketplace, the tradeshow floor has expanded to include interactive activities, such as a bamboo dome by Architecture for Humanity Boston, a full-scale mockup of ADD Inc’s micro-housing unit initiative What’s In (And Who’s Out), and an Accessibility Exhibit promoting universal design. Admission to the Exhibit Hall is free for attendees if they register by October 31.

Produced by the Boston Society of Architects (BSA), this is the inaugural year of ABX. AEC Biz: Many Signs Pointing Up

Construction Employers Add 1,000 Jobs

Employment gains in residential construction sector offset nonresidential job losses.

Construction employers added 1,000 jobs in August while the industry’s unemployment rate fell to 11.3%, according to an analysis of new federal data released by the AGC. The unemployment declines come as the construction industry continues to shrink, association officials noted, adding that over 214,000 workers have left the industry since August 2011.

Nonresidential construction employment declined by 6,000 in August and is down by 6,400 for the year, Sandherr noted.

He said that the heavy and civil engineering construction sector, buoyed by the passage earlier this year of a new federal transportation bill, added 2,800 jobs between July and August and 17,400 since August 2011.

Life Sciences Tax Incentive Program

In order to expand life sciences-related employment opportunities, promote health-related innovations, and stimulate research and development, manufacturing and commercialization in the life sciences, the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is pleased to announce that it is offering tax incentives in 2012 to companies engaged in life sciences research and development, commercialization, and manufacturing in Massachusetts. The Life Sciences Initiative authorizes the center to award up to $25 million in tax incentives each year.

Binney Street Topped Off

Cambridge, MA - Construction, building development, and design teams as well as local officials, including City of Cambridge Mayor Henrietta Davis, recently celebrated a major milestone at 225 Binney Street at a topping off ceremony marking the placement of the last iron beam onto the new 305,000sf office building, that includes 105,000sf of below-grade parking.

Designed to meet LEED Silver certification, the building’s integrated design team includes developer ARE, construction manager Consigli Construction Co., Inc., architects Spagnolo Gisness Architects and Nelson, and MEP engineers, Vanderweil.

Developed to house Biogen Idec’s general and administrative functions, the building will include flexible and innovative spaces to encourage collaboration, along with a conference center and a 6,300sf cafeteria, among other amenities. The modern architecture of the six-story building, featuring a glass and terra cotta façade, will also incorporate two existing historic buildings.

120 Kingston St. Breaks Ground

Suffolk Construction, Forest City, and Hudson Group Team Up

Boston - BRA Director Peter Meade celebrated the groundbreaking on new housing on the Greenway at 120 Kingston Street. The $130 million project will add 240 rental units downtown.

The project developers, Forest City Residential and Hudson Group North America are also deeding four parcels of land to the Chinese Economic Development Council for the creation of new affordable housing units at Oxford Ping On in Chinatown.

“What makes Boston unique is that we create housing opportunities for all our residents,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino. “The 120 Kingston Street project will add rental options in a stunning new building on the Greenway to the downtown market, while creating 48 affordable units in Chinatown — strengthening and preserving the community’s cultural fabric.”

“Right now in Boston there are over 3,300 units of housing under construction, representing $1.7 billion worth of investment,” said Director Meade. “What’s unique about all of this new housing is that it’s housing for all residents, and the 120 Kingston Street project exemplifies that.”

The tower’s design is a contemporary blend of granite, concrete, and convex radius glass which reaches nearly the full height of the building, reflecting a gentle turn in the path of the Greenway at that point. Designed by Elkus Manfredi Architects, the exterior building design team also includes Perkins Eastman and RODE Architects, which is handling the design of the interior spaces.

“This is truly a remarkable site with wonderful visibility within the neighborhood, great accessibility and impressive views,” said Frank Wuest, president of Forest City Boston. “The 120 Kingston building will be an impressive addition to the Boston skyline that will nicely complement the Greenway and create a great new facet of living in this neighborhood.”

New Market Basket Under Way

East Providence, RI - Tockwotton Home, a nonprofit, assisted living and skilled nursing community in Rhode Island will move to a new building, Tockwotton on the Waterfront, currently under construction in East Providence. Diversified Project Management of Newton, Mass. will provide relocation management services. DiMella Shaffer and Cutler Associates are providing the architectural and general contracting services.

Located in close proximity to Bold Point Park, abutting the Seekonk River, Tockwotton’s new building will double the capacity of the existing residence, which currently houses 24 seniors in the assisted living wing and 42 in the skilled nursing wing.

The project is scheduled to complete in November, and the new building will open on December 15.

Brookstone Gets Club Project

Concord, MA - Brookstone Builders, Inc., construction managers and general contractors headquartered in Manchester, N.H., recently announced that they have been awarded a multi-facility reconstruction project at the Heritage Pool & Racquet Club in Concord.

The scope-of-work will involve the

demolition of the existing bath house and storage facilities, then the construction of a new 5,000sf bath house with offices.

Other buildings include a covered pavilion, a pool equipment building, and new tennis court side hut. New landscaping will complement a new pool-area deck.

Service Credit Union HQ Opens Gund Architect - Suffolk CM

Portsmouth, NH - Service Credit Union recently celebrated the opening of its new headquarters in Portsmouth.

Gund Partnership of Cambridge is the architect, and Suffolk Construction is the construction manager.

Clad in glass curtain wall and locally sourced granite, the four story building creates a new landmark and unified headquarters for the growing credit union. It is located on Lafayette Road, a major corridor leading into downtown Portsmouth, and is the first project under the city’s new Gateway District zoning ordinances.

The 100,000sf building features a full-service, 24x7 member service call center, foreign exchange, member check imaging, processing and control, finance, community rooms, conference rooms, departmental, and executive offices.

Three community rooms on the ground level will be offered for use by local city government, not-for-profit organizations, and other community based associations.

Green design strategies played a significant role in the design approach. The team is seeking LEED Gold certification. Geothermal heat exchange, high performance low emissive glazing, envelope improvements, displacement ventilation, raised floor sys-

The building is organized around a central sky-lit atrium that connects all four floors with natural light and offers a dramatic area for communal interaction.

A significant amenity for staff is the 17.1-acre site. Formerly a brownfield site, the landscape is now richly planted with walking trails and outdoor seating areas that encourage staff to take advantage of the open space. IIDA New England President’s Message

by Tracey L Jabs, IIDA, LEED AP On July 1 I took the helm of IIDA New England and want to share the past, present, and future with you in my first President’s Message.

Over the last few years the board has refocused and shifted our direction as a business organization for interior designers and the greater design industry. We have hired IntrinXec Management, Inc. to run our day-to-day chapter business.

Their wide array of talent supports our Tracey Jabs administrative, financial, graphic, website, and various other needs under one roof.

Sean Schuette is our main contact and I hope you have had the chance to meet or talk with him. I want to thank Jeff Tompkins, past president, for having the stamina, skill, and insight to lead the board through this transition. I am personally and professionally honored to have worked so closely with him during this time.

Just days after being sworn in, the new executive board gathered for a retreat, which allowed the new group to get acquainted, partake in teambuilding exercises, receive a crash course in the business of a nonprofit organization, engage in strategic planning, and discuss our 2012 to 2013 goals. Since that day in July, the executive board, board of directors, and

committee chairs have been busy working with the Fashion Show, Design Awards and Business Leaders Breakfast committees, as well as planning our 2013 chapter event calendar.

At the July board retreat, we discussed how we would continue as a business organization. It was very apparent that the chapter is well-known in the design community for our big 3 chapter events and that we have a huge opportunity to continue expanding our mission with smaller, focused events. We realize that you as an interior designer, architect, dealer or manufacturer’s representative, project manager, real estate developer, contractor, or facilities manager each have a different need based on your years of professional experience, current job description, and future goals.

Through smaller events, we can focus on industry trends, building codes, and business skills to provide information that you need to be successful. We envision delivering more value in small doses through the Forums series, the Professional Development series, NCIDQ Study Group, and additional programs still in development.

When we discuss the future we see great value to being a member of your professional organization – IIDA New England.

We realize that everyone’s value is unique; you can attend an event and devote an hour to professional development; join a committee and be part of a group that develops these programs. But when you volunteer for a committee or stand for election to your board you make a commitment to not only

increase your professional development, but to increasing that of your fellow peers.

New London, NH - As students returned to the campus of Colby Sawyer College, they were greeted with huge changes to the Ware Campus Center. Eckman Construction, based in Bedford, was at work all summer on an addition and complete interior renovation to the building that contains student dining and other services.

By Labor Day, all of the renovations to the existing building were complete, and students are already able to use parts of what will be a new, 750-seat dining room.

Work on the project will continue through the fall semester.

Dining services remained open through the summer, and Eckman staff coordinated closely with dining workers.

Portland, Maine - Gawron Turgeon Architects designed the new cPort Credit Union on Forest Ave. in Portland. The prime location for the new branch helped guide the design process every step of the way. Storefront windows in particular were a priority to have a strong visual connection to the community on this busy street.

Constructed by Landry/French Construction in only eight weeks, this 2,600sf space is made up of a retail branch and mortgage and loan offices.

Gawron Turgeon Architects designed the interiors to have The Bank of Maine’s

branding incorporated into the design: curvilinear soffets and bright wall colors mimic the bank’s Mainescape logo.

Decorative lights, 3form panels, and custom millwork for the coffee counter and teller pods give the branch a warm and welcoming feeling.

LED lights were selected, and the design team specifically opted to utilize as much of the existing walls as possible to reduce demolition.

Cambridge, MA - An 8,100sf renovation at John Harvard’s Brewery & Ale House has been completed by Shawmut Design and Construction of Boston. Owned

by Centerplate, Inc., it is located at 33 Dunster Street in Cambridge.

Designed by BSR Brand + Environment, the project included the remodeling and refreshing of the restaurant space. Installation of two new conical bottom beer fermentation tanks will play a key role in the new restaurant experience. The tanks will be used during the on-site brewing process and the “spent grain” which they generate will be devoted to a new line of “spent grain pizzas” featured on the re-imagined menu.

The design also included the restoration of many existing historic finishes, including the 100-year-old floor, bar top, wooden panels, and pub table tops.

Centerplate is one of the top sports venue concessionaires in the industry.

Medford, MA - Cannon Design announced the completion of the Biology Department Collaborative Cluster Project at Tufts University in Medford. A “collaborative cluster” formed by a 24,100gsf renovation was designed to facilitate collaboration among Tufts biology researchers. North Branch Begins SNHU Hall

Southern New Hampshire University Residence Hall

Hooksett, NH - North Branch Construction of Concord has begun construction of a new residence hall on the Southern New Hampshire University campus. This fourstory building will serve as a co-ed dormitory with over 300 beds. It will be located behind the Hampton and Windsor dormitories at the end of East Side Drive. Construction is expected to be complete in the fall of 2013. JSA, Inc. of Portsmouth will provide architectural services for this project.

Branch Construction has completed for Southern New Hampshire University. Last summer, they completed construction of the operations center, that serves as a central hub for the university’s building and grounds department. The operations center features office space and a warehouse that includes an equipment storage mezzanine with a 3,000-lb vertical lift. Construction also included a three-bay shed located behind the operations center that is used to house sand, salt, vehicles, and equipment.

Boston - Nadeau Corporation located in Attleboro has been awarded the $650,000 contract by the University of Massachusetts Boston as the general contractor to perform renovations to the Campus Center Atrium at the Dorchester location.

The project includes: clearing, metal fabrications, ornamental metal work, rough carpentry, lath and plaster, drywall/gypsum, and glass and glazing work. Nadeau Corporations project manager David D’Angelo will be collaborating with Kapiloffs Glass and Larkin Iron & Fence to deliver this project to the university.

PARE Selected for School Designs

Andover, MA - Pare Corporation, a planning and engineering firm with offices in Foxboro, was selected by the town of Andover in early 2012 to perform evaluations and prepare a site master plan for seven of the town’s public schools.

The plan included: traffic analyses, wetland delineation, geotechnical borings and pavement cores, and the evaluation of parking, site circulation, landscape, site lighting, pavement, and ADA issues.

Full topographic and boundary surveys were also performed and supplied to the town for future designs and improvements in accordance with the plan.

PARE completed the site master plan at the end of April, and West Middle School was chosen as the first school for final de-

sign and construction of recommended improvements. Site improvements for the Doherty Middle School will be undertaken next, with construction scheduled for the summer of 2013.

Rehoboth, MA - The Lincoln School recently celebrated the grand opening of the Carriage House and Terrace, as well as the Murray Family Athletic Complex at Faxon Farm in Rehoboth., a renovation plan to transform and create premier athletic facilities for the school’s students.

New England Construction provided construction management services as the existing historic carriage house was completely restored and transformed into

a modern, handicap accessible restroom facility for students and visitors. Renovations, as designed by Vision 3 Architects, included rehabilitation of structural issues, replacement of the roof, windows, doors and new electrical and plumbing services.

A new septic system, designed by InSite Engineering Services, was required to meet the enhanced needs of the facility, as well as to provide for future expansion at the Farm.

Three Innovative Schools Open Designed by HMFH

Exterior view of Mill Brook primary school Concord, N.H - HMFH Architects, a Cambridge. Mass.-based architectural firm announced that three new elementary schools it designed for the Concord, N.H. School District have opened in time for the 2012-2013 school year.

Initiated by the system’s superintendent, Christine Rath, and based on current understanding of brain-based research, planning for the new schools probed the very nature of K-12 learning. Input from the faculty, administration, and local community played integral parts in the design process, which centered around three visionary ideas: 1) Spaces should support collaborative learning; 2) these collaborative spaces should be easily accessible by faculty and students to fully integrate them into the dayto-day learning experience; and 3) these spaces need to provide a variety of flexible environments to support a range of learning activities.

The resulting program features a two-story, 30-foot-wide learning corridor in place of a traditional library room, with a variety of highly visible and easily accessi-

ble educational environments to encourage project-based learning and collaboration, and to support a range of learning styles and curriculum delivery methods.

“The Concord school district’s forward-looking vision for its new schools challenged us to rethink the standards for elementary school facilities,” said Laura Wernick, AIA, REFP, LEED AP, senior principal at HMFH Architects.

The recently completed AbbottDowning Elementary School, Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, and Mill Brook Primary School will now house most of Concord’s K-5 students. Although organized around the same learning corridor concept, each school is unique.

All three new schools were constructed with extensive recycled and locally produced materials and will be Northeast Collaborative for High Performance Schools (NE-CHPS) certified as green school buildings, meeting strict sustainability standards.

Bangor, ME - AlliedCook Construction recently completed construction of Husson University’s new living and learning center, the first of its kind on a college or university campus in Maine.

The first floor is dedicated to learning and includes faculty offices and mock classrooms with flexible furniture, storage props, communications technology, and other resources to increase opportunities for handson learning experiences.

The College of Business has dedicated classroom space that allows students to conduct simulated board meetings and webbased team analysis. The criminal justice program has dedicated space for actual investigations, allowing students to investigate mock crime scene scenarios, and the New England School of Communications (NESCom) has a dedicated audio engineering classroom. A mock elementary education classroom allows teaching majors to practice in a classroom environment.

The upper four floors contain twobedroom suites for nearly 250 students. The suites include bathroom and living area and accommodate up to four students each. Each floor has a common area for gatherings that is flooded with an abundance of natural light by the floor-to-ceiling windows on each end of the space.

The living and learning center was a design-build collaboration between Winton Scott Architects of Portland and AlliedCook Construction.

by Mark Reed I was biking recently along the new foot bridge that connects the North Point parks at the Museum of Science to Paul Revere Park in Charlestown, when I was detoured around the groundbreaking festivities for Education First’s new 300,000sf building. Seeing the celebration on one side of the path and pile drivers set up on the other made me think about how much the construction industry has changed over the Mark Reed past four years.

2008 was one of the most terrifying times of my career.

The design and construction industry saw nearly all of the planned projects come to a screeching halt. Jobs were evaporating in an uncontrolled downward spiral. Firms were all competing for the same set of “shovelready” projects. There was no construction financing available and there was virtually no work going on in the city. The Filene’s site was a bitter reminder of the collapse of the construction economy. We lost an entire generation of architecture students who dropped out of the field with so few prospects. Close friends within the design and construction community were directly impacted by the loss of work and opportunity.

It was a terrible time that I hope we never see again.

A little over a year ago, things began

to get visibly better. The mood cheered.

Our local universities began to design and build again, with several significant new projects announced and set in motion. Kendall Square started to buzz with new construction and big plans for future work.

Biotech firms started to grow and look for new space. Fan Pier’s massive development moved forward, and the transformation of the Seaport picked up steam. Cranes are dotting the skyline once again. Work is being spread around. Firms are in stronger shape.

People are hiring.

It is not clear how much, if any, of this rejuvenation is due to government action and policy. My guess is that there was some beneficial help from these sources. The state clearly made a case for investing in the life sciences. Research funding from the NIH, DOE, DOD, and other federal agencies fed directly into our innovation economy, helping our universities to consider expansion and re-investment. Maybe the stabilization of the banks and the freeing up of capital was the deciding factor. Probably it was a combination of these things that contributed to our brighter condition today.

While we are nowhere near where we were in the heyday of 2007, we are definitely moving in a better direction in terms of construction growth and opportunity. When we remember how truly frightening the outlook was in 2008, and are asked to consider if we are better off today than four years ago, the answer is clear. Better off? Yes. South Dartmouth, MA - D.F. Pray General Contractors, headquartered in Seekonk, recently completed the fast-track, ground-up construction of a new 3,634sf Cumberland Farms convenience store and Gulf service station on Dartmouth Street in South Dartmouth. The contractor completed the project in just 14 weeks, two weeks ahead of schedule. Cumberland Farms opened the new store in July.

The project entailed the demolition of an existing Cumberland Farms store, an adjacent building, and utilities back to the property line, allowing for construction of the new store and service station. The project scope included installation of new

underground double-wall fuel tanks and an underground detention system for storm water.

The Colonial-style, wood-framed building features trusses and a cultured stone veneer architectural detail. The store’s interior design and finishes are typical of the new design format being rolled out for all Cumberland Farm stores. Aharonian & Associates of Smithfield, RI provided architectural services.

D.F. Pray has completed 25 Cumberland Farm store renovations in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut since May 2011.

Abbot Restores Boston Building

Boston - Abbot’s Small Projects Division recently completed restoration of the façade of a five-story brick warehouse building at 61-63 Wareham Street in Boston’s historic South End. After the building began to experience water penetration issues, the building owner elected to install new bronze replacement windows in an effort to control the problem. Because the replacement windows did not eliminate all of the water penetration, the owner contacted Abbot to recaulk the replacement windows and repoint the entire building façade. Abbot cut all of the mortar joints to a depth of onehalf inch and repointed the façade.

Jackson Labs Project Funded

Farmington, CT – Funding was recently authorized for the construction of the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine on the campus of the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. Funding for the project was authorized and provided by the state of Connecticut through the newly formed Connecticut Bioscience Collaboration Fund.

The fund will be administrated by Connecticut Innovations (CI) and will be used to develop, construct, and equip a research laboratory and office building at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. The facility will

be a 173,000sf laboratory, concentrating on advancing genomics research, genome-based medicine, DNA, stem cell, bioscience medical research, and other medical research disciplines. Planning for the project began in early 2012, and construction is expected to commence in January of 2013. Occupancy is targeted for the fall of 2014.

Teaming with architecture firm BL Companies of Meriden, Erland has now begun Phase 1B, which will be complete in the fall of 2013.

Phase 1A encompassed two five-story buildings, and Phase 1B will add one more five-story structure. All three, totaling 362,000sf, have a mix of restaurants, retail, and commercial space on the first floor and residential units on floors two through five.

oston - Suffolk Construction has been selected to manage construction of the One Channel Center project in Boston’s rapidly expanding Innovation District. The $125 million project, developed by a joint venture of AREA Property Partners and Commonwealth Ventures, will feature construction of a 525,000sf, 11-story core and shell office building and a 10-level, 950-car aboveground parking garage. When completed, the new building will be fully occupied by State Street Corporation.

Nitsch Engineering of Boston joined this project in January 2012 to provide civil engineering services, including roadway and utility infrastructure design for three new public and private ways, and site design services including site layout, grading, utility design, including stormwater treatment, and recharge. Nitsch also provided Boston Water and Sewer Commission and Public Improvement Commission permitting services on the project. To support the project schedule, these services were completed within six months

One Channel Center

Howard Stein Hudson Associates (HSH) has been involved in transportation planning and traffic engineering for the Channel Center project since its initial permitting in 2000. The process included participation in developing the 100 Acres Plan, a planning process initiated by the city that achieved consensus among the four major landowners in the area.

Channel Center, the first in the area to receive permits, was developed to be consistent with and support the 100 Acres Plan. Mitigation for the development included on-site circulation and parking to meet demand. Off-site mitigation included geometric and signal installation/ improvement at four intersections along A Street.

To further reduce the impact of the project on the surrounding transportation system, HSH assisted the developer in establishing an extensive travel demand management (TDM) program.

of the project will include the creation of two open-space areas—the 72,000sf New Park and the 9,000sf Iron Street Park. The Suffolk project team will also manage streetscape improvements consisting of new sidewalks, street trees, and lighting.

So what is colocation? Colocation is when the company’s servers/primary data storage, and key IT equipment are located (colocated) in a facility that is owned/operated by a third party. These facilities are equipped with redundant, high-speed data connections to allow users to access application and data with similar experience (low latency) as if the IT equipment were located in the company’s offices. Additionally, supporting infrastructure for the IT equipment is often redundant and robust through cooling, power (UPS, standby, and normal), fire suppression, security, and on-site support and monitoring for full-time, dedicated staff, therefore reducing the operational risk to the client (business owner). Lastly, many colo facilities today are focused on reducing their environmental impact by employing high-efficient cooling systems and very efficient power distribution systems which can be much more efficient than companyby-company approach due the economies of scale and the colo’s focus on reducing their specific operational costs.

Each business is unique and as a result the evaluation of whether colocation is an appropriate path forward, a company will depend on specific variables that need to be determined, vetted, and analyzed. A strong understanding of the company’s cur-

Examples include insufficient cooling water for client’s data center air conditioners as well as insufficient UPS and/or generator capacity to ensure continuous operations.

As part of the buy-versus-build analysis, potential colo providers will need to be provided with a clear understanding of the company’s power (kW), space, operational reliability, bandwidth requirements, and contract length/terms. Considerations for the the evaluation include understanding how power is billed (allocated or actual use?), escalation cost per year, data bandwidth billing, tech support costs and availability, as well as expansion/retraction rate/ penalties. If the business has regulation compliance requirements (i.e, SSAE-16 or HIPAA), these will be a litmus test for potential colo facilities. Additionally, the physical location of the colo facility is often a key variable for the decision process.

Many clients want to be able to get access to the colo facility within 5 to 30 minutes.

By extraditing the majority of a company’s IT infrastructure outside of the business managed space, the operational reliability is often increased while also freeing up current and future space for the company’s core business functions.

TownePlace Gets LEED Silver Pro Con Architect and CM

The TownePlace Suites Hotel North Kingstown, RI – Pro Con Inc announced that The TownePlace Suites Hotel, located in the Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown, has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the US Green Building Council.

Pro Con Inc, of Manchester, N.H., was the architect and construction manager for the 104-key extended stay hotel, which was developed as part of the Gateway Parcel Master Development by New Boston Fund Inc. of Boston and Waterford Development of Needham, Mass.

The four-story, 55,453sf hotel is the first TownePlace Suites to become LEED certified in the country.

SAK Provides Services to Steel Art

North Andover, MA - SAK Environmental recently provided a wide range of environmental services to Steel Art, a premium architectural sign manufacturer, who moved from Allston to a larger, 50,000sf building on Dean Street in Norwood.

SAK’s work included Phase 1 and 2 environmental site assessments; building assessment, securing environmental operating permits for manufacturing operations, and implementation of a new health and safety program for the new facility.

Fall River, MA - This summer marked a big move for HealthFirst Family Care Center, as it relocated down the street to a new 78,000sf community health center designed by Steffian Bradley Architects.

East Providence, RI - The Northeastern Economic Developers Association (NEDA) recently selected the Rumford Center as NEDA’s Project of the Year. The award recognizes a major economic development project based on job creation and other direct economic impacts; capital investments; leveraging of development resources; use of public/private and/or intergovernmental partnerships; benefits to the surrounding community and/or environment; innovation; design excellence and transportation considerations.

The Rumford Center, located in East Providence, was originally constructed in 1856 for Rumford Chemical Works Company. In 2005 it was becoming evident that without intervention, part or potentially all of the historic Rumford mill complex was in danger of being lost to condemnation and/or demolition. New England Construction of East Providence served as construction manager for the 270,000sf adaptive reuse of the historic mill and brownfield redevelopment project, providing preconstruction services, including planning, budgeting constructability review, value engineering, scheduling and management of local permitting. NEC worked closely with the design team of Prellwitz/Chilinski Associates, Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., along with the PK Rumford LLC to collectively understand the design, construction, and budget risks of this massive project.

The center now boasts 112 apartment units, 60,000sf of office space, and numerous retail tenants and a restaurant. Currently, more than 120 people work at the Rumford Rumford Center, before reconstruction Center.

Five Ways to Make Better Hires

By Conrad Martin Who you hire can be one of the most critical decisions you can make for the future success of your company. Hire the right team members and future success can be almost guaranteed. Hiring the wrong group can be disastrous in many ways. For these reasons, hiring should Conrad Martin not be something to be taken lightly. The following will serve to provide five best practices when hiring new people.

1. Clearly define the position. Create a clear and exact description of the position you are seeking employees for. This will help you pursue and attract only those who are qualified for the position. Prospective employees need to know exactly what you are seeking before applying for the position.

Fail to do this and you may be overwhelmed by ill qualified candidates. Anyone who has made the mistake of hiring one of these ill qualified candidates knows what a drain on time and valuable resources this can be.

2. Scan resumes for measurable results. Past performance can be a reliable indicator of future performance. In my personal opinion it is important to get specifics on one’s past track record. A business acquaintance of mine owns a company that helps company owners and operators make improvements to the profitability of their facilities. He also helps develop staffing strategies and assists in the vetting of new hires.

One of the most important aspects of performance he looks out for are quantifiable results and statistics. Things like “increased department profitability by 30%” and “managed $100 million in buildings” is what we are talking about here. For me personally as

an executive recruiter if I don’t see quantifiable results on a résumé I will ask the candidate questions to draw out their value in terms of results and make sure it is included in a rewritten résumé.

3. Take the time to hire the right person. In most cases you should resist the urge to hire someone on the spot without interviewing all of the potential candidates.

Spending quality time with each candidate is essential as well. I spoke with one hiring manager recently who told me he spends four hours interviewing each candidate.

That may seem a little extreme for most people, but the point is to be thorough and deliberate when it comes to evaluating potential hires.

4. Check references. References should be checked but also taken with a grain of salt. It can be hard to find a negative reference for a candidate. Sometimes company policy is a factor, other times someone may be reluctant to say anything unkind.

Try to read between the lines and be sure to ask follow up questions. I recently spoke with someone who was listed as a reference for a candidate of mine who told me he was dreading my call. He declined to elaborate, which told me all I needed to know. Also notice how enthusiastic or apathetic a reference is.

5. Be aware of the candidate’s experience throughout the hiring process. Make sure you are giving a good impression. The candidate is evaluating you as much and you are evaluating him or her. Be clear about what happens next in the process and when. Keep candidates updated, and if you can, make the process enjoyable. If you don’t end up hiring this particular person they will still tell others in the industry what a great experience they had.

NFPA Appoints Honold

Quincy, MA - The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has named Gary Honold as the regional director for the northwest region.

Honold will focus on improving fire, building, and life safety in his region by working with state and local authorities, to promote NFPA services and the adoption of NFPA codes and standards in nine states: Alaska, Idaho,

Montana, Nebraska, N. Dakota, Oregon, S. Dakota, Washington, and Wyoming.

Honold brings more than 20 years of fire service experience to NFPA. Prior to joining NFPA in this role, he recently retired as captain of the Missoula Fire Department in Montana where he rose through the ranks. He had also been working as an NFPA public education advisor since the beginning of 2012.
