HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY offers many exciting opportunities for students to study in the U.S. and abroad.

Through the short-term Global Experience programs, students spend two to four weeks on-site while completing classes that satisfy general education, major, or elective requirements.

HPU faculty members accompany each group and teach the courses. These opportunities are ideal for students who are unable to devote an entire semester to study abroad, and they are available to students as early as their freshman year. Course offerings and destinations vary each year to meet a wide array 2

of student interests.

A NOTE FROM YOUR STUDY ABROAD ADVISOR Dear Students, From Europe to Asia to the Americas, our journeys across the globe have opened doors to opportunities that have significantly changed our lives. We left behind what had always been familiar to us in order to delve into and embrace the exciting unknown. We connected with other cultures by learning different languages, meeting new people, tasting unique delicacies, and exploring ancient landmarks. These colorful experiences will forever be woven into the vibrant tapestries of our lives, and it is our hope to share with you this passion for enlightenment and growth through international education.

Each year, hundreds of High Point University students take part in these interactive and academically rigorous travel experiences that have spanned six continents. Your opportunity to follow in their footsteps and see the world from a new perspective starts now! This year, we’re offering a slate of 20 new, redesigned, and bellowed past courses. The pages that follow contain information about this year’s programs, which span the globe and a variety of topics. Each course presents its unique challenges and opportunities, and each offers experiences you’ll only find here at High Point University.

Acquire an understanding of Chinese history, art, architecture, cuisine, and customs as you explore sites in Beijing and Shanghai. While abroad, take the bullet train from Shanghai to Beijing, hike the Great Wall, explore Changling Tomb - the earliest and biggest Ming tomb built in the 15th century - sample a Peking duck dinner at the famous Quanjude Restaurant, watch a Shaolin kung fu demonstration, and visit the Olympic Stadium including the Bird’s Nest.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit a university in Shanghai to meet and interact with Chinese students.

With Italy as its cultural laboratory, this course examines factors leading to sociocultural similarities and differences in personality, emotion, relationships, and physical and mental health in order to identify universal and culture-bound aspects of behavior.

In a number of on-site field experiences, you will observe and analyze cultural differences among regions of Italy as well differences between Italy and the United States. Students will examine normative gender roles, nonverbal communication patterns, and other aspects of social behavior. The travel portion of the class will visit sites in Sorrento, Naples, Amalfi, Rome, Florence, Lake Como, and Venice. You will also take part in an Italian cooking course, food tours, art museums, tours of Roman ruins, and a visit to the Vatican in order to develop an understanding of the historical and contemporary expressions of culture in daily life.

EXPLORATIONS OF FRANCE - NEW! Taught entirely in French and bookended by visits to Paris, the course winds its way through the regions of Normandy, Brittany, and the Loire Valley, exposing you to their unique cultures and traditions. Along the way, you will benefit from an immersive French language experience while exploring Mont Saint-Michel (a UNESCO World Heritage site), attending a Breton language class at L’Université Rennes 2, initiating informal conversations with locals in the coastal city of Saint-Malo, and competing in a cultural/historical scavenger hunt across the city of Rennes. Your travels will also take you out of the urban environments of Paris and Rennes as you hike in the Brocéliande forest, explore the bay and salt marshes surrounding the island of Mont Saint-Michel, and visit the Crozon peninsula.

While you’re there, visit Akihabara Electric Town, attend a baseball game, eat your weight in sushi, stroll the Harajuku fashion district, and experience Tokyo Disneyland!

Impress future employers with your hands-on experience in an international business setting as you get to know European business firsthand!

Research specific works of art and architecture, then engage them face-to-face on this highly experiential and hands-on tour of Italy and Italian Renaissance art.

Wrestle with the complex historical and theological question of what is the relationship between Christianity and Judaism and what role has the land played in the intersection of these two faiths. Particularly, the class will ask how the Jesus movement offered an alternative vision to other competing visions on what it means to be the people of God living in a Promised Land occupied by a foreign power. Visit Caesarea-by-the-Sea, Nazareth Church of the Annunciation, Mount of Beatitudes, the Dead Sea, Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity, the Temple Mount, and various sites in Israel! This course meets the Religion General Education requirement.

INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE IN THE WORKPLACE: A TOUR OF DANISH/GERMAN RELATIONS - NEW! In particular, the countries of Denmark and Germany are both rich in history yet are on the forefront of current and leading edge technology, service, and manufacturing, housing many of the world’s largest and most influential organizations. Tour and hear lectures at Maersk, Universal Robots, and Mercedes Benz, all global organizations showcased in course content prior to travel. A visit to Denmark’s Middelgrunden, the world’s largest offshore wind farm, will provide an opportunity to learn about its collaborative history and the extensive negotiation and community development. Join us for this new program to Denmark and Germany!

Study in a historic building at the 800-year-old Universidad de Salamanca, one of the oldest universities of the world.

Take weekend excursions to the Basque region of San Sebastian, a coastal city near the border of France; then visit the Andalucía cities of Granada and Sevilla, known for its tapas and flamenco. You will explore the Castilla-Leon region, visiting Segovia, La Alberca, and three castles among the region all while gaining a better understanding of marketing strategies and advertising linguistics in Spain.

While abroad you will see the Royal Palace of Sweden in Stockholm, take a canal cruise in Copenhagen, and visit design schools, manufacturing centers, and design stores in both locations. INT-3280 is a special topics course that is cross-listed as ART-3881 and VMD 3200, which satisfies requirements for junior and senior Interior Design, Visual Merchandising Design, Art, and Graphic Design & Digital Imaging students. This course creates a unique opportunity for art and design students to work together in a design build studio.

REVOLUTION IN PARIS: DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY Course Title: Revolution in Paris: Art at the Turn of Two Centuries Course Number: ART/GBS 3780 Credit Hours: 4 Term Offered: Spring 2018 Prerequisite: None Dates: May 6-21, 2018 Estimated Cost: TBD Faculty Leaders: Ms. Benita VanWinkle & Ms. Janis Dougherty See through the lens of a camera what motivated the exceptional artists of the last 170 years since the invention of photography was announced in Paris. While in France, create a photo documentary of your own, photographing the Parisian street scenes, the city from the Eiffel Tower, and Monet’s garden in Giverny. Critical to the course is the study of architecture and artistic styles that are still influential today, many of which you’ll study in your own city before departure. Through this well-rounded curriculum, you will experience learning both inside and out of the classroom while attending lectures, visiting museums to see the original works of renowned artists, and learning critical camera techniques. This course fulfills the Art Studio requirement and the Global Studies requirement.

SCANDINAVIAN LITERATURE, THEATRE & FILM - NEW!

Besides the usual round of impressive (and free!) museums, gardens, and libraries, Copenhagen boasts the Kierkegaard Research Center and the Hans Christian Andersen House, as well as the oldest functioning theatre in Northern Europe The Royal Dramaten of Copenhagen - a beautiful 18th century creation. You will expand these experiences through visits to Stockholm’s various cultural museums and heritage parks which seek to preserve traditional Swedish culture. In Norway, cruise through fjords situated between towering ridgelines and consider the dramatic juxtaposition of mountain and sea in Norwegian landscape.

The course will include travel to Stratford-upon-Avon and numerous play performances and theatre workshops in some of the most famous theaters in the world including the Royal Shakespeare Company Theater and Shakespeare’s Globe Theater. Along the way, see the sites in London and visit Shakespeare’s birthplace! This course will meet the Fine Arts General Education requirement.

SICILY: THE CROSSROADS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN - NEW! Course Title: Placing Sicily: the Crossroads of the Mediterranean Course Number: ITA/GBS 3232 Credit Hours: 4 Term Offered: May 2018 (Tuition & Fees approx. $3,080.50) Prerequisite: ENG 1103 Dates: May 5-June 1, 2018 Estimated Cost: $6,699-$7,399 (10-15 students) Faculty Leaders: Dr. Tessa Gurney & Dr. Francisco Laguna-Correa The island of Sicily is situated in the middle of the vast and conflicted Mediterranean, and its somewhat off-the-beaten-path location makes it an ideal place from which to study and observe unspoiled Italian culture. The island has a storied past, however. A veritable place of confluence, Sicily’s unique geographical location is between both East and West, and North and South. Often, the convergence is not only spatial but also temporal, as the island has often acted as a point of contact between old and new. Based in Syracuse on the southeastern side of Sicily, you will thoroughly explore the surrounding sites and include immersive day trips during which you will discover the Greek Temples at Agrigento, swim in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean, learn of ancient chocolate-making techniques in the baroque city of Modica, and hike in the shadows of Mt. Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano. This course meets Global Studies and an upper-level elective for the Italian Studies Minor.

The conference will be preceded by three weeks of on-campus lecture, discussion, and handson laboratory experiences. This course fulfills the EPY 2200 requirement of all exercise science majors and is ideal for students interested in exploring careers in exercise science, health promotion, public health, or clinical professions such as athletic training, physical therapy, or occupational therapy. During the travel component of this course, you will learn from the world’s leading experts and enjoy an outdoor water activity, such as kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boarding.

During the Spring semester, you’ll explore case studies and eyewitness accounts of Washington, D.C. politics. Then, spend two weeks in D.C., interacting with elected officials and other powerbrokers while exploring many of the nation’s most noteworthy centers of power and political landmarks. Enjoy networking opportunities that most political junkies can only dream of.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDY EXPERIENCE? A RIGOROUS ACADEMIC PROGRAM FROM HPU FACULTY. Study abroad is, first and foremost, an academic experience—a place where classroom instruction is met with experiential learning, where different cultural norms promote broader understanding and instruction becomes hands on. Your studies may be split between the HPU classroom and your travels, or may take place completely on site in one or more cities around the globe. Similar to your other HPU courses, you’ll have lectures, homework, quizzes, papers, and exams; but, you may find your lectures take place in city parks and your lessons are conducted in bustling markets. Assignments may require careful study in museums, networking with executives in international businesses, observing the interaction of local residents in a neighborhood café (or those in the South African bush), learning traditional arts and performing traditional dances and ceremonies, or reflecting through writing, drawing, or photography. With faculty-led study abroad, travel has a purpose—to support the curriculum and enhance your learning.

A WELL-CRAFTED AND COMPREHENSIVE TRAVEL EXPERIENCE. The Office of Study Abroad works closely with travel professionals, experts, and guides to craft comprehensive travel programs.

Global Experience programs offer pre-arranged flights, accommodations, group transportation, group activities, some group meals, and on-site managers where needed. Included in the program fee will be the costs of all group travel, including airfare, visa fees, ground transportation, accommodation, and travel insurance, as well as admission fees, local guides and guest lecturers, where applicable, tips and gratuities, pre-departure materials, on-site orientations, and other program-specific expenses. Each international Global Experience program provides for two HPU faculty members to accompany the group, and domestic programs provide for at least one.

INTRINSIC GROWTH IN CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND DEVELOPMENT TOWARDS DEEPER INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCIES. Understanding the course content and the fact that there are differences around the world simply are not enough, however.

Studying abroad builds in us all not only a better understanding of the world around us, but a greater knowledge of how we choose to learn from and develop through these challenges and differences. Our behavior is reflected by the degree of our intercultural competencies—what we believe, how we interact with others, and how we present ourselves in this world. Our hope is that you will step outside of what you find comfortable and allow yourself to be challenged to a point where you not only recognize differences, but look inside of yourself to choose how you’ll react to these differences. Will you embrace diversity in appearance, communication, and thought? Will you shift your ways of thinking? Is it ok to challenge others’ thinking? Can two peoples’ beliefs both be “right”?

These are things that can’t just be taught in a classroom, but must be learned though experience.
