From the Head of School & Camp

Hello Friends,
The 2021-22 school year was a glorious change from last year as we had the chance to be on campus every day and to celebrate more traditions together. Additionally, this summer camp returns to its regular program and configuration. It’s strange to think that we would ever celebrate a simple opportunity that we previously took for granted- the chance to be together.
High Meadows has a rich history and traditions that put a premium on relationships and community. It is these connections and the care we take with one another that have helped us navigate the challenges that our world has faced in the last two years. The energy that we generate through our shared commitment to High Meadows has also put us in a stronger position coming out of this pandemic than we had going in. Whether you are a new High Meadows family, an alum who was in Pre-K in 1973, a retired teacher, an alumni parent, or a member of the HMS Class of 2022, thank you! You are a part of our success.
Starting this summer, we have begun a year-long celebration of High Meadow’s 50th Anniversary. It is a true privilege to serve this community at such an important time in our history—to honor our founders and friends and to imagine and invest in our future.
I hope you enjoy our Year in Review and the sneak peek at our new Strategic Plan. Next time, I hope to see you on campus.
All the best,
Lisa Baker Head of School & Camp“High Meadows has a rich history and traditions that put a premium on relationships and community. It is these connections and the care we take with one another that have helped us navigate the challenges that our world has faced in the last two years.”

Connecting to our Roots
High Meadows School & Camp and the Chattahoochee Nature Center both naturally attract families who value connection to the outdoors, learning through exploration, and environmental education. Many people don’t realize, however, that the two organizations also share a history dating back to the 1960’s when High Meadows founder, Jody Holden, and her husband Horace called the acres of land that make up the CNC home. The property, which was at that time their residence, was also home to their first nature-based preschool program- a precursor to High Meadows own school and camp program which Jody and the three other High Meadows founders began in 1973.
To honor this shared origin story and to connect High Meadows faculty and staff back to the history of the organization, the faculty and staff orientation for the 2021-2022 school year was held at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. Three Middle Years Teachers, Anne Lovatt, Jean Hunter, and Sarah Topper, volunteered to create a dynamic day together that would include experiential learning opportunities similar to those they would incorporate into a lesson plan for their students. Anne shares, “We were tasked with creating a “scavenger hunt” learning experience that would welcome our peers, take advantage of the beautiful location, and give some historical context as to our early days as a school and camp. We wanted to make something fun and interactive that would get people up and moving and socially come together as a community after the previous year of small group cohorts and relative isolation from one another.”

To further reconnect with High Meadows’ history and roots, three of four High Meadows founders, Jay Dickerson, Jody Holden, and Michael Drake came and shared their memories of the development and early days of High Meadows. Many laughs and stories were shared, and not a person in attendance didn’t leave feeling more connected to and appreciative of the time, effort, innovation and care that went into the creation of such a wonderful place for children and adults to thrive.
Jean Hunter, who has taught at High Meadows School for over 37 years, reflected that “Beginning our school year together on the very property where preschoolers picked muscadines and scuppernongs for many years felt gloriously right. For years, High Meadows students took field trips to Jody’s property to pick grapes to make jelly. Children climbed the rock walls on that property and ran between the rows of grapevines, picked purple and golden grapes with their own hands, discovered the juicy sweetness of each, and carried baskets of grapes back to school to make jelly to enjoy with fresh biscuits and home-made butter. Circling back to understand the history of High Meadows together as a staff and faculty felt like an echo of Jody helping children see the wonder in their immediate worlds- hands on learning at its best.”
Spending the day at the Chattahoochee Nature Center learning, playing, thinking and growing together as a full faculty and staff provided a meaningful and intentional kickoff to the school year. Anne Lovatt, who also attended High Meadows School and Camp as a child, elaborates, “We wanted everyone to have something valuable to take away from the experience, whether that was a new idea for their work, the start of or a renewed friendship, or some new understanding or curiosity. I feel lucky to get to work with exceptionally thoughtful, creative, knowledgeable colleagues. The day felt like a success.”
Goats, Gardens, and Gratitude: A Different Type of Teaching Gig
Take a single stroll around the High Meadows campus and you’ll understand that High Meadows isn’t your average, everyday school. Educators seek out teaching positions here because of our strong, collaborative culture, our commitment to progressive education, and the opportunity our model offers for them to bring their unique talents, interests and ideas to the table. Joining the High Meadows Faculty can also come with surprises that make every day here a new adventure.
Mooni Abdus-Salam, who joined the High Meadows Faculty as a 2nd/3rd grade teacher in January 2021, shares that teaching at High Meadows is “definitely a change in environment” as compared to her past school experiences. “As part of my interview process, Lisa Baker walked and talked with me before my classroom visit and we stopped in front of the Kindergarten classrooms to see students enjoying the cool November air. One of the students came up and hugged me mid-conversation, said “hi”, and skipped away. Not only was I touched by this enthusiastic greeting, I was also surprised that the Head of School would take her time to personally tour me around campus. The welcoming atmosphere at High Meadows was one of many things that convinced me that High Meadows would be a great place to teach.”
After joining the 4th/5th grade teaching team in fall 2021, Jennifer Kraften has particularly enjoyed the flexibility of teaching at High Meadows. “With the world as their classroom, High Meadows students learn in some pretty interesting places!” Not only do our students learn all over our 42-acre campus across meadows, woods, gardens and farm space, they also get to travel and expand their horizons on some exciting class trips. In April 2022 fourth and fifth grade students traveled by bus to visit Camp McDowell in Nauvoo, Alabama for 3 days and 2 nights of learning, growing, and fun. Ms. Kraften shares that “the trip to Camp McDowell focused on food waste, environmentally sustainable choices, and stewardship for our world through engaging, hands-on experiences. Though canoeing with friends, a barn dance, and milking a goat were top experiences that students cited, the opportunity also inspired personal learning and growth.”

To assist new teachers in acclimating to our unique school culture, High Meadows alum, former HMS teacher, and current parent Sarah Bobbitt held orientation sessions to share school history, answer questions, and provide training around how to capitalize on the dynamic learning spaces around our campus. This intentional “onboarding” effort allowed new teachers to feel supported in navigating their new roles, which often look a little bit different from past teaching positions. “I was honored to have the opportunity to share my love and knowledge of High Meadows with the group.”
In addition to an educational model that provides opportunities for both students and teachers to express themselves, embrace a growth-mindset, and to bring learning to life through experience and investigation, the High Meadows campus also offers a unique landscape for teachers to utilize.
Lower School Principal Lori Kennedy shares that “we encourage every teacher to view our campus as an extension to their classroom. Many teachers who are new to our community get to learn alongside their students how to take learning out into nature.” It’s not uncommon to see classes out utilizing the gardens in their math lessons, the cabins as outdoor learning spaces, and the meadows as a perfect spot for lunch, snack, and play. You also never know when a chicken, goats, or helmeted guineafowl might join your lesson!

HMS Class of 2022
Our 2022 8th grade graduates are heading into their high school experiences not only with a strong academic foundation, but also with the flexibility, perseverance, and sense of humor that was required to navigate middle school during a truly unusual time. As they prepare for their next chapter in high school, we asked our 2022 graduates to reflect on “What their favorite thing about High Meadows is?” Read on to hear their responses.
I love how diverse and inclusive everybody is as a community because it really shows that our differecnces are what brings us together.
My favorite thing about High Meadows is the effort and caring from the students and teachers to make the school feel like a special place.
The best thing about High Meadows is the freedom and trust that comes from building relationships with the teachers. That freedom and trust allows us as students to be independent free thinkers.

My favorite thing about High Meadows is the tire swing because it's iconic and it was the first thing I saw at High Meadows and it's fun to be on it.

i I love High Meadows because the teachers are amazing at communicating with you.
There are many things I love about High Meadows, including all the amazing teachers, the people here, and the time we get to spend outside.
How inclusive everyone is and all the great memories it creates.

In schools with larger classroom sizes, teachers may not be able to respond or reach out like HMS teachers do with their students. It allows them to have more of a personal connection with the students and I have really benefited from connection.
My favorite thing about High Meadows is the close community because everyone knows and supports each other.

The students and teachers are very kind.
Being able to be outside and see nature.

I like the teaching style.
I love the great community at High Meadows with all of the teachers and students knowing everyone and getting along well.
Everyone is inclusive and encouraging. We spend most of our time outdoors and bring nature into our academic structure.

My favorite part of HMS is the environment that we get to work in. That includes being able to hang out with the animals, the way our tables are set up, and how we have so much freedom in where we sit.
The ability to express yourself and how teachers treat students as if they were friends rather than a work colleague. The teachers helped me express my feelings and develop more relationships with other people
Freedom.

Community. I especially love the teacher student relationships that make HMS more of a home than a school. I wake up every morning and I’m excited to go to school. I also love how supportive the community is.
What I really enjoyed about High Meadows was how much freedom we get as students, the overall community, and how easily we are able to make connections with peers and with teachers.

My favorite part of High Meadows is the relationship that I got to have with my teachers. At High Meadows the community is open-minded about your feelings and interests.
My favorite thing about High Meadows is the love from the teachers and the students.
I love High Meadows because of the trust and respect each individual has in each other and the environment.

How everyone gets to speak their own thoughts and share their opinions without being shut down. I also like how we pay attention to nature and the things around us rather than just the humans.
Being able to be ourdoors and the good social environment.
HMS is a wonderful school where students have the opportunity to have fun while learning. My favorite thing is the animals. Each day they come out on the meadow, some even reaching our classroom doors which adds excitement to our day.

I love how caring and supportive the students and teachers are at High Meadows are. The teachers show genuine interest in the students and get to know us as individuals.
The people and the environment. It is like a secondary family to me. I feel like I can talk to almost everyone about anything without getting judged. The teachers have always helped me through anything that I needed.

The people, both the teachers and the students. I have met so many new people after going to this school for so long. I have developed these friends throughout my years at High Meadows and will continue to be friends with these people for years.
Little Moon and the playful atmosphere are my favorite things about High Meadows.
My favorite thing about High Meadows is the teachers. They really get to know each student and challenge each of us to be our best selves.

My favorite thing is the tight-knit communtiy because you know everyone including the student and teachers. You are close friends with everyone.

The best part is the welcoming community and all the wonderful teachers that surround us. We get to build relationships with them and form great, great memories.
The teachers and the freedom.
The relationships the students create with the teachers is the best thing about High Meadows because if a teacher is there, they will help you with anything.

Teachers treat us like people instead of treating us like children. It allows for us to explore what it's like to do things by ourselves and allows for children to grow by themselves.

Everyone is friendly, inclusive, caring, and open minded. I also love that we are outside so much even for class sometimes.
We get to be ourselves every day. We get full independence to choose our days like our mini courses and where we sit for lunch. You don’t get that freedom at other schools and it’s what makes it such an amazing environment.
The freedom to be ourselves and the freedom to go places we thought we would never go in a school year. The freedom is what separates High Meadows from public school.

I love the feeling of community here and that you specifically are important.
My favorite thing about High Meadows is the beautiful nature and the (mostly) free roaming animals.
I really like the people, the students are all fun and nice, and the teachers are all fun.

Letter from the Board Chair
Dear High Meadows Community,
As the 2021-2022 academic year comes to a close, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the families that make up this wonderful community; for the inspiring faculty, staff, and administrators that consistently deliver the best possible education to our children; for my fellow board members who serve as stewards of the High Meadows mission; and for Lisa Baker and her team for role modeling what ethical leadership looks like.
An essential ingredient of every independent school is a healthy and generous culture of giving. This past year, our “Ignite the Wonder” High Meadows Annual Fund was indeed met with generosity and enthusiasm by our families. We surpassed our goal of raising $300,000 with contributions coming from 72% of parents. Thank you! I also want to thank the High Meadows Fund Grade Chair Committee members and Advancement Team for making this possible.
One of our main priorities this past year was to launch a Strategic Design Process. This was an inclusive, intensive, and collaborative process that culminated in the creation of our Strategic Plan (details on the next page). This plan reaffirms our mission, establishes a vision, clarifies our values, and identifies strategic priorities for the next 3-5 years. Many of you completed a community survey, joined Zoom calls, and found other ways to give your input, thoughts, and recommendations for this Strategic Plan. Thank you for your partnership!
I genuinely feel fortunate to be a part of this community. I believe we have something very special here and am grateful to be a part of it. Thank you for being a part of it too!
Cheers,
Javier Estrella Chair, Board of Trustees
Unveiling the Strategic Plan
During the 2021-22 academic year, High Meadows School & Camp launched a comprehensive strategic planning process. The Board of Trustees established a Strategic Design Team made up of faculty, administration, and Board members who worked with Greenwich Leadership Partners to shepherd a highly inclusive and thorough process. Thank you to the hundreds of people who engaged through surveys, discussions, and feedback sessions. Your perspectives and feedback influenced and shaped this plan. We are excited to share this initial document with you and look forward to the collective work it will frame for the next 3-5 years.

We value a diverse community of belonging as essential to growth and learning. At High Meadows, we
• respect and appreciate the multi-dimensional identities of individuals who make up our community.
• seek and support belonging and significance in our journey to understand ourselves and others.
• commit to open communication and constructive dialogue.
• purposefully cultivate respectful relationships among all members of the community.
We value our campus and its historical significance as a starting point from which to explore and understand the world and our responsibility in its future. At High Meadows, we
• engage with the natural environment consciously, respectfully, and purposefully.

• utilize the outdoors to benefit mental and physical wellbeing.
