minister of communication and information We are witnessing a generation of people who invest a lot of their time to social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter. Rather than posting the real Self, we sometimes tend to construct another Self, a public and virtual Self that is usually different than the reality. This copy of Highlight Magazine will deliver a new interesting perspective about Virtual Identity for all fellow readers, and also showcase the exciting events that has been happening in Unpar for this past year. Lastly, I am forever grateful for all contributors whose roles are vital in bringing this magazine into life.

Malam Penghargaan Unpar (MPU) 2019 is one of the work programs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Unpar Student Presidential for the 2018/2019 period. This work program is a place to give appreciation to Unpar students who have participated and winning some awards that uplift the reputation of Unpar, both individually and in groups.

With the existence of this work program, it is expected to stimulate and motivate other Unpar students to achieve more and uplift the reputation of Unpar. Malam Penghargaan Unpar 2019 was held on April 6, 2019 at the Harris Hotel & Conventions Ciumbuleuit Bandung. 272 outstanding students were invited to this program.

“SIAP Gabungan 2018� was held on August 6th9th 2018. The event began with a ceremony and greetings from Mangadar Situmorang, the rector of Unpar. The event is in the form of flash mobs and musical drama with a more joyful atmosphere, with intention to remove the negative stigma of Study Orientation and Campus Introduction which contain elements of violence and seniority. The activity on the first day continued with presentation about Unpar details and socialization of sesanti and SINDU values. On the second day, the activity was teaching about the values SIAP 2018 through speeches from major mentors and the introduction of the campus physical environment, as well as all executive and legislative organizations (LKM and MPM) and talent organizations (UKM and Communities) student affairs. The event was closed by speeches from the chairman, Eugene Gabriel Marionaldi continued by Louis and Jessica Andriani as the Student President and Vice-President, not forgetting the closing remarks from Rector Unpar.

The 2018 Expo UKM and Community is the program of Directorate General of Student Activity Units and Community. This is a forum for mostly new students to be channeled directly to UKM and communities at Parahyangan Catholic University. As a student we have to continue to develop and increase student interests and talents, not only focusing on the academic knowledge.

With Expo UKM and Community 2018 students can attend activities held at Parahyangan Catholic University according to their interests and talents and develop themselves. The 2018 Expo UKM and Community is held on August 20th-21st 2018 at the Unpar Rectorate Parking Lot. There are booths for students to participate and ask questions about UKM and communities and also display and demo’s from UKM and communities in Parahyangan Catholic University.

TOSAYA 2019 was held in Merak Dampit Village, Cimenyan Village, Cimenyan District, Bandung Regency, where the majority of the population worked in the agricultural sector with commodities such as potatoes and onions. Based on this potential, TOSAYA 2019 seeks to provide empowerment through workshops on processing potatoes and onions into balado chips to have a higher selling value. In addition, there is also counseling about coffee that have the potential to increase the income of the local community.

Not only focusing on empowerment, TOSAYA 2019 also construct incinerators to reduce waste problems and constructing the volleyball field guardrails to improve security at these facilities. There are also socio-cultural activities that aim to improve relations and interactions between Unpar students and local residents. The socio-cultural activities are volleyball competitions and art training. With the holding of TOSAYA 2019, it is hoped that it can improve the social sensitivity of Unpar students and help improve the quality of life of the people of Merak Dampit Village

ministry of external affairs, general directorate of public relations This year, Parahyangan Catholic University has the opportunity to hold TEDxUNPAR for the first time. TEDxUNPAR is Talks or commonly referred as TED Talks used as a platform for the UNPAR community to voice and receive new insights, innovations and inspirations in carrying out life. The scale of this event is international; because TED has spread in various parts of the world. TEDxUNPAR presents various inspirational speakers from the Unpar community; namely students, lecturers, and alumni.

The theme presented by TEDxUNPAR 2019 is “Go Beyond”; which means moving beyond the maximum potential that we have been thinking about is our limit. Through TEDxUNPAR 2019, participants are expected to be able to get new creative ideas that can be used to develop themselves. The theme “Go Beyond” is in line with the image of the community of Parahyangan Catholic University which is always open to new creations and innovations. TEDxUNPAR 2019 will be held on Friday, April 13, 2019 at Parahyangan Catholic University.

Parahyangan Future Leader (PFL) is a work program from the Directorate General of Research with the concept of Starts From You!. This concept means that being an effective leader starts from the ability and willingness of oneself. The series of PFL events are divided into several parts, the first is the Basic Leadership Training held on November 24-25 2018 at Mountain Springs Resort, Lembang. This training contains presentations by several speakers namely Aqua Dwipayana (motivator), Rex Marindo (Warunk Upnormal) and Trivet (Proud Project), talking about Communication, Time Management and Self-Confidence. Then the participants were divided into several groups to design work programs, which would be eliminated into the three best groups in the second series of events, the Seminar and Elimination held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 in the Operation Room of the Unpar Rectorate Building.

The theme of the second series of the Basic Leadership Training was Leader for other Leaders. It was attended by the CEO of AirAsia Indonesia, Mr. Dendy Kurniawan, who shared his experiences about teamwork. There were three out of nine groups of participants that passed. The elimination process is assessed by three judges consisting of Louis (Student President LKM 2018/2019), Mahesa Aditya (Student President LKM 2017) and Bianda Nabila (Minister of Internal Affairs LKM 2017).

Malam Keluarga Unpar (Makelu) 2019 is a program that aims to accomodate Unpar students to channel their interests and talents in the field of art and to improve togetherness among all Unpar elements. This event will be held on May 4, 2019 located on Parahyangan Catholic University. Makelu 2019 adopts the concept of art festival with internal scale and a collective series of performance on-stages and off-stage. Through this concept, Makelu 2019 presenting four main parts, Art Performance which presents music, dance, fashion shows, and standup comedy performances from Unpar students and guest stars. The Second part is Art Exhibition which contains exhibitions of artwork in the form of visual arts and literary compositions. Then there are feast, as well as interactive activities such as games, tarot booths, etc in Interacting Booth part.

ministry of student affairs, general directorate of assessment and strategic action Komunal Bersuara or known as MUARA is a new functional during the leadership of Student Presidency Period 2018/2019 . MUARA is a forum discussion for students and cultural development of discussion of Unpar students. MUARA is expected to be a facility for intellectuals in national matters and more sensitive to the condition of the nation.

MUARA is held twice in the odd semester and twice in the even semester. On the fourth MUARA, in collaboration with the West Java KPU in the hope that students can take part in a democratic party that takes place in 2019. As long as MUARA is implemented, there is tremendous enthusiasm from Unpar students. We hoped that this discussion culture and discussion forum will not be lost, maintained and developed further to be able to exchange ideas with students from other universities.

aksi ministry of student affairs, general directorate of assessment and strategic action AKSI is a functional program that aims to increase student social sensitivity towards Indonesia. AKSI is celebrated precisely with the national days such as Veterans Day, Food Day, Heroes’ Day, Teacher’s Day, AIDS Day, Autism Care Day, Earth Day and National Education Day. Every day celebration is done in different ways. As one example is the AIDS day where a social experiment is carried out by writing messages and hugging people who affected by HIV-AIDS. This shows that there are still many Unpar students who care about those who suffer from HIV-AIDS.

Zoom In is a guide magazine of Unpar and its surroundings that is made specifically for new students. Through this magazine, new students can find out the basic things about Unpar. Entering the 10th edition, Zoom In 2018 is packaged with a memphis design.

The separate geometric forms on the cover of the magazine then merge into one form at the end, symbolizing the different new individuals entering the Unpar environment, united under the auspices of the UNPAR academic community. The process of making Zoom In takes one month, starting from the end of June to the distribution on August 6, 2018. Zoom In 2018 can be viewed through the website pm.unpar.ac.id in PDF format.

Suara Mahasiswa is a website to accommodate aspirations, complaints and suggestions from all UNPAR students. Through suaramahasiswa.unpar. ac.id, students can monitor the extent to which their aspirations have been followed up. Currently, suaramahasiswa.unpar.ac.id has been integrated with 10 institutions / bureaus / work units at UNPAR, including MFIs, MPM, Finance Bureau, Student & Alumni Bureau, General & Technical Bureau, Academic Administration Bureau, Information Technology Bureau, Center for Career Development, Publication, and Marketing / Marketing. With the integration, the process of following up on aspirations becomes more transparent, because student aspirations will be immediately conveyed to the authorities.

In August-October 2018, suaramahasiswa.unpar. ac.id held a mascot contest with the aim of increasing the participation of UNPAR students. From this contest, a mascot named Anon and Anglocita was obtained. Then, in November-December 2018, suaramahasiswa.unpar.ac.id held a socialization to students in the form of opening a booth located at Pantai Hukum, SB Ekonomi Building 9, and Letter T FISIP with the aim of explaining the suaramahasiswa. unpar.ac.id system and accommodate aspirations from fellow students. Students who give aspirations to the booth will get exclusive merchandise from suaramahasiswa.unpar.ac.id. suaramahasiswa.unpar.ac.id will continue to develop to help and facilitate all fellow students in delivering aspirations / complaints / suggestions.

“SD Binaan” is an HMPSEP work program under the external public relations department in the form of social activities to meet UNPAR vision. The event was held on November 24, 2018 at SDN 5 Cikidiang by theme “Aku Sehat, Prestasi-ku meningkat” which focuses on health, and its relation to achievement. Starting with exercise, followed by presentation and crafting, participants then watched videos and played games. The event was closed by giving snacks to the participants.

management makma Malam Keakraban Manajemen (MAKMA) 2018 is the annual program of HMPSM Unpar. This year, MAKMA 2018 is held on February 9, 2018 in the Parking area of the UNPAR Rectorate. The event was enlivened by pom-boys, fashion shows, contemporary music, cabaret, modern dance, band generation, games, parades and ended with Reality Club performance as the guest star. The excitement of MAKMA 2018 was closed with singing the march of HMPSM by the entire committee.

dekan cup Dekan cup is an annual sports competition organized by HMPSIH’s art and sports division. The goal of dekan cup is to bring a closer relationship between generations through a healthy sports competitions. All the participants active students of the law faculty. This event consists of E-Sport, Soccer and Basketball competitions. E-sport (FIFA) was held from October 29-November 1, located on skip and play meanwhile basketball and futsal are held from November 5-November 21 in Pasaga.

The delegates from Unpar Public Administration was participating to meet young Indonesian intellectual administrators also to add more knowledge and insight about it. National Nutrition Day that falls on February 28th 2019 is commemorated

by HMPSIAB Division of Community Service and was held on Kebon Kelapa, Asia Afrika, Pasar Baru, Tegalega, Dago and Bukit Jarian. In these streets, the committee and volunteers are distributing nasi padang to people in need. Beforehand, the committee opened a booth from February 18-22th, 2019 on Letter T FISIP for receiving donations. The donations received were in the form of money Rp15,000 or packaged rice. HMPSIAB distribute 120 packs of rice in this event.

international relations all out journalism All Out Journalism (AOJ) is an annual work program held by Warta Himahi, an organization under HMPSIHI with theme Raising Voices: Fostering Freedom of Expression in the Globalization Era. This event was held on March 5-6th 2019 in Mgr. Geisse Lecture Hall, Unpar. The event consists of three programs, writing articles and photo essays, workshops, and talkshows. The AOJ is expected to be a place for young Indonesians to learn about freedom speech that is responsible. / 27

Bhakti Ganva is an annual program by HMPSTS and HMPSArs that aims to help villages that have dreams in infrastructure. This year target is Kampung Garung, Desa Cilengkrang, Cibiru Wetan and has been started from October 2018 until June. For Kampung Garung, we built MCK facilities and communal space for coordination. This program was implemented because many villages in Bandung were still do not have adequate facilities and we hope that with Bhakti Ganva, the number of disadvantaged villages in Indonesia can be reduced.

architecture re-bamboo In effort to minimize the negative impact of the environment from development, efficiency in the use of material, energy, and space resources began to emphasized. The Rebamboo event is present as an educational forum for bamboo, one of the renewable local building materials. Held on Saturday and Sunday, October 13-14 2018 and took place at the PPAG Audio Visual Room, this event was filled with seminars, workshops and presentations from speakers and sponsors.

idea IDEA is a program between HMPSTI under the Public Relations Division and the Product Design Practicum (P2P) that presents 10 of the best product which have passed the P2P. The 3rd year Industrial Engineering students had the opportunity to modernize traditional Indonesian games.

IDEA was held on November 30th 2018 at PPAG Hall UNPAR and open for public.

IDEA aimed to increase the existence of Industrial Engineering students in the field of product design science.

chemical engineering latihan keterampilan manajemen mahasiswa dasar Latihan Keterampilan Manajemen Mahasiswa Dasar (LKMM-D) 2019 is an activity organized by HMPSTK as a place to equip students with the skills to organize student activities with good planning. LKMM-D is for students who are involved in student organizations at many levels. This activity consists of lectures, experiments and exercises. This is the first activity by HMPSTK with debriefing about curriculum in research and technology and provided by an experienced team from ITS. This activity was held on February 23rd 2019, in the Hall of Economic Building. / 29

Mechatronics Robotic Competiton is an event based on the West Java SumoBot competition organized by HMPSTEM on September 29th-November 5th 2018.

For the preliminary round and arena test, located on the 2nd floor of the 10th Unpar building and for the final round was held in Ballroom Harris Hotel. This event aims to introduce mechatronics and robotics to the wider community and to be a place for high school students to develop skills in robotics.

mathematics match Match is a sport competition organized by HMPSMa sports division. All participants are UNPAR Mathematics Students and was held on 12-23 November 2018 at OBC & Pasaga. There are Basketball, futsal, E-Sport, Table Tennis, and Badminton competition. Match held to fulfill students interest in sports and strengthen the relationship between Mathematics Students. At the end of the match, the players who won get prizes that hopefully will motivate them to continue honing themselves academically and physically.

physics fun physics competition (fusion)

informatics i-care I-Care is a social service that located at orphanage in Bandung. The orphanage we visited are Tambat Hati Orphanage in November, Wisma Putra Orphanage in December and Dana Mulia Orphanage in February. The event held twice a month with duration per-4 hours.

The participants are playing games which will be basic knowledge about informatics such as basic logic and simple mathematics. After games, there will be sharing experiences by the children from the games. The activity end with closure by the committee. / 31

FUSION 2018 is a physics competition for junior and senior high school students. FUSION 2018 was on October 18-19th 2018 in the 8th floor of Gedung 9 with theme “Eureka� which was attended by 69 teams from various schools in Bandung and Jakarta. FUSION consists of 4 rounds which is the PG, Essay, Demonstration and Science Market.

There was also a workshop for accompanying teachers. FUSION is a program from HMPSFis to attract the interest of students in particular in the field of physics and introduce physical phenomena in everyday life.

sports day Sunday, February 24th 2019 is a sports day for students of the Faculty of Philosophy. The sports activity is the program of HMPSF sports division. was held at the St. Aloysius Sultan Agung school field from 14.30 to 17.00.

There are soccer, basketball, volleyball and badminton.

Around 3:30 a.m, the rain falls until the students were forced to pause. After the rain has stopped, they continue to exercise. At 4:45 p.m, people are resting and eat the snacks provided. The wet clothes did not block their conversation and laughter. Around 5 pm, the students decided to go home.

Self Defense Seminar discuss about how to effectively remove yourself from criminal acts because lately there are many dangerous situation for women. This seminar held in September and located at Harris Hotel. People who have never participated but want to learn about martial arts, can learn about it here. There are two sessions, the first session is self defense for all groups and the next session is self defense for women. Participants learn how to knock down opponents and find a solution in a dangerous scenario.

airsoft Unpar Airsoftgun (UA) operates in the field of outdoor sports that has been around since 2007. UA has various internal and external activities involving the Indonesian airsoftgun community. There are several activities in routine exercises, including war simulation, ABAC competition training (5 against 5), and AA-IPSC training (reaction shoot).

kendo UKM Kendo doing one kyu level exam every year, at the end of January. This exam is usually followed by new students who have become members and participate in training also for senior to reach the next level. The exam usually held in Bintaro, at Jakarta Japanese School. Routine exercises are held every Monday and Thursday. There are tentative exercises at the Bandung dojo with other senior Kendo outside UNPAR on Tuesday or Friday.

korgala KORGALA has the role to help people who affected by natural disasters. KORGALA usually responds to predisaster situations (disaster mitigation & socialization) and post-disaster (donations, assessments). Some of the activities that have been by KORGALA are the Banten Tsunami, Cahaya for Donggala, and Lombok Disaster Response.

During a disaster in Lombok, Korgala sent its members to go directly to the field on August 4, 2018 for 2 weeks and on December 17, 2018 for 8 days. For Palu-Donggala, KORGALA held a fundraising with 1000 candles for Palu and Donggala.

There is no escape from people’s faces, illuminated by the faint glow of their phone screen, as they endlessly scroll into the deep, deep abyss called social media. Hell-bent, possessed by the images we present ourselves on the apps, rather than fixating on how other people views us for who we really are. What we are experiencing is the outburst of people with the insecurity of living a life unfulfilled.

These carefully curated personas make for a constant need to seek reassurance, to seek validation.

It’s obvious that the presence of these apps alters our personality, indirectly or not. The social media has always been marketed as a vessel to share a life, to nitpick our parts of life, only showing the best ones and kept others hidden. Rebranding ourselves is not being dishonest; rather it opens a door for people to form a good impression even before knowing the person. After all, what we are given is a tool to make our best portraiture, to look ecstatic, sugar-coated, with glittering vibrant colors, a life full of the joys of spring.

Things we posted online is only a facade of our identity, and the choice to reveal or hide anything we like is up to us, as we are the ones who take full control of our image. The benchmark of the happy life is not inscribed on the instagram profiles.

An all-smiling, happy-go-lucky, person might be projected through the profile, but embedded is a shallow alteration of the personality. We should not overlook the fact that everything we see online is curated thoroughly before posted.

Avatar and profile picture, the two similar things with a quite different meaning. People tend to use avatar and not their profile picture such as photo, because it could fulfill their expectation of other people’s perspective. In a certain way, profile picture could also be our own avatar. Some of us may say that avatar was made to help us find our most-likely selves in a better way and no, it’s not wrong at all. It is part of our alter ego (the other us), the other side of ourselves that we always wanted to be, but at the same time, it is also a way to hide our true self from others. With the rise of social media in everyday life, we could see that almost everyone shows their alter ego, and it goes for Zepeto users as well.

Being popular in mid-2018, Zepeto is a kind of thing among young people. Everyone used it as it was a trend. It is a platform where we can connect with friends and meet other people using 3D avatar. The face recognition system make this app is different and has a plus point compared with other apps. We can create our avatar look by purchasing the coins, add friends by sharing a 6-digit personal code, message them, and create virtual scenes with friends using a photobooth-like tool.

But is it a way to represent ourselves or is it a way to reinvent ourselves? Apart from the purpose of this app, people are getting comfortable with this new avatar looks and create their imaginary self that they always wanted to be and might hiding their true physical looks. It’s like a platform for us to reinvent ourselves because that’s the world’s needed. We create something that other people wanted to see.

Perhaps it has something to do with seeing thigh-high boots and frilly skirts, things that we don’t usually see in our daily life. As we know, one of the most human things we human do (and actually good at) is picking on differences and alienating unfamiliar things. / 45

“Why would you dress up as your favourite characters?� is probably one of the most frequently asked question regarding cosplay. Actually, cosplaying is more than just a get-up.

Being in cosplay means both dressing up and pretending to be the character.

Now, would that be fair? To say that the cosplayers are playing dress up or make believe, as if most of us does exactly the same.

See, society is so eager in painting the cosplayers as the weird ones out, just because their dress-up game is much more vibrant than the rest of us. Perhaps if we all look into our wardrobe now; we all would find things we bought because someone we adore wore it first. The items that resembles something someone has, that we bought as an attempt to channel that person. As someone put on their preferred costume, they transform into something else. Something they desires to be.

Borrowing traits sounds so much like identity theft, but I promise we do it on the daily. Ever walk up in front of the class and immediately thought about Michelle Obama, and trying to replicate her grace and composure? The world is just a big game of make-believe, that’s why the phrase fake it ‘till you make it was coined. We pick apart things we like from other figures, to add to our own self as a way to become someone we want to be. Aren’t that essentially the same as someone who cosplays a cheerful character because they want to be more cheerful, at least for the length of the convention they attend?

Somebody told me that some people change under the wig; who was shy on the daily can turn cheerful when they put on the cheerful-character’s get up. They believe it has to do with putting on something so extravagant, they don’t get shy anymore. It also has something to do with looking at the mirror and seeing your favourite character staring back, instead of boring old you. Won’t that be the best thing in the world? To look at the mirror and seeing someone you adore? That makes it easier to be someone else; to be more cheerful, to smile more, to be smart and witty. All that the character would do, now you can too.

Seeing is believing, after all. If you can borrow their appearance, you can borrow their traits.

Cosplayers replicates their preferred character’s appearance, and acts according to the character’s personality and traits. This doesn’t make them the weirdos who plays pretend in their twenties. This just means that they play the game of fake it until you make it differently.

What is Persona? Can it really exist without Identity?

The term identity is never far from the question “who are you?” What is the meaning of who you really are? Identity is a value that determines what choices we make. These choices reflects who we are and what we value. However, in fact there are still many people who have not been able to choose their identity. they only internalize the values of their parents or dominant culture.

Unfortunately, these values may not be in harmony with one’s authentic self and create an unfulfilled life. The lack of a coherent sense of identity will cause uncertainty about what someone wants to do in life, causing a shaky grasp on one’s persona. We have been always talking about how someone’s persona not matching their identity. So, how about a persona without a true identity, a computer-generated persona?

Turns out today, there are many CGI models littered around social medias.

Lil Miquela, for example, first posted her selfie in 2016 and ever since then, more CGI models starts to appear, following her way to be a digital influencer. these CGI Models represents the technological advancements that the fashion industry has to align with for fear of being left behind, and the ongoing tension between appearance and reality in the media. But this phenomenon leads to another question, does CGI Models can really affect the industry, and even the way people see “real” models?

In Tinder and other online dating application, users are presented with a sequence of photographs of other individuals seeking partners, which they can swipe to the right if they find the person attractive—or swipe left if they don’t. Like surfing through the catalogue of “potential suitor”, we can simply search for them within our phone screen anywhere, anytime; a shortcut to finding our matches.

We are also given a chance to represent ourselves in any way we want to the “potential suitors”. We only need to fill in our names, ages, and short descriptions of ourselves. We can hide a few things, or we can even tell a complete lie. It won’t matter, because the users are mostly looking for fun or “not looking for anything steady”.

Perhaps, when such users meet each other, they will go for a ride somewhere, anywhere they want to while forgetting about their problems; finding escape within each other from their respective lives, even if only for a blink of the night.

The short descriptions will matter when the users take their relationship to the next level and it starts to crumble down because the partner isn’t the same as how they are presented in that compact Tinder profile. But really, what do they expect? Finding their soulmate through the instant ways of the internet, after exchanging profiles that are not even worth a second thought?

Even for the hopeless romantics, that ought to sound like it’s too good to be true.

Either way, both are searching for something akin to happy times. Instant happiness, if we can even call it that. Though that so-called instant happiness is nothing but fleeting moments, as it’s detached from their own reality just like how they make it be. How can it not be detached, if the profiles leaves so much room for imagination? As human beings, we are complex creatures, so a few interesting words and attractive profile pictures can’t even begin to show a peek of our real self. With so much information that we left out, the profiles we see might as well be fake. And we can’t build something real on something that is not real.

Half-baked interactions doesn’t deserve full bloomed happily ever after.

She knew all too well that distance and the locked door would not prevent him to tell her what to do.

She felt like a slave, and she felt more like one every single time she begged him to stop, and all he replied was, “You have no choice.”

This happened for four months until one day when she arrived at school, her classmates glanced at her weirdly, some giggled and some even laughed. Her stomach was churning, she had a hunch of what was happening. Later, her hunch was proven to be right; a couple of her sexual photos were already exposed on the internet.

“I never thought you would do something like this.” her father had yelled without even looking at her, and her mother was crying while covering her face. She had cried and said sorry over and over again, but their answer was, “You brought this to yourself.”

At that time all she thought was, I did, didn’t I?.

Sometime later, the photos were being taken down from the internet, but did it change anything? No, not really. Her parents still couldn’t afford to look at her, and the people at school still talking about her. Furthermore, she kept receiving messages from random strangers on her social media;

“You have an amazing body. Wanna share more with me?”

“Pray for mercy to God, you sinner!”

“A whore like you should burn in hell.”

Her friends had stayed and comforted her through the entire ordeal, but they blamed her all the same, “What did you think sharing that kind of pictures?”. The worst thing was she believed them too at that time, how could she not? After all, she did all those things to herself by her own hands. Not even the fact that she was being forced to do those things could stop her from feeling dirty. But somehow she also couldn’t stop the anger inside herself. She wasn’t the one who upload the photos, and she wasn’t even taking them because she wanted to, but it became her fault; hers and hers alone.

She didn’t know when exactly that she finally saw what was really happening. The people at school who talked about her photos with a smile

on their faces, and the strangers who told her off in the social media, and her own relatives who kept saying that she had the worst “rebellious phase”; they were getting a kick out of it. The nights that ruined herself had turned into nothing but sexual photos all over the internet that worth talking about to make their life more interesting. For them, she was not a person anymore, even her words were ignored, as the story kept coming back to; “A girl who shared her private pictures, just so she could get back together with her exboyfriend.” It was frustrating, trapped inside people’s condemn and unable to do anything about it.

In the messy place of the online media, what happened to Mara does not matter, the truth does not matter, what matter is which piece of the framed reality that people liked. Perhaps that’s why the online media post often has “like” option. And perhaps that’s also why they treated Mara as “hot news”, rather than a victim of blackmail and sexual assault.

“Nosedive” introduces us with Lacie, a girl with an ambition to attain a certain lifestyle--to live in a prestige apartment with a prominent neighborhood.

In order to achieve that, she has to earn a higher ‘rate’ of herself, and with extra motivation, the effort she gives to be ‘loved’ more by the society become excessive. She turns out depriving more of her genuinity than she already had, and that is all you see in almost every people in this episode. People giving likes to others and expected to be liked back, choose to smile widely at people with higher ‘rate’, and ostracize others just for their lower ‘rate’. This ‘rate’ thing has become people’s utmost objectives, the ‘rate’ that actually only represents someone at their very shallow surface. How did it even ever occur to make that ‘rate’ represent one’s self-worth?

“Nosedive” pictures a world where judging others by their covers becomes really easy, and can be done without any consent. You don’t only get toxic comments for your unsatisfactory persona, you’ll also get nasty treatments for that, and it’s all tangible.

This, somehow, is an advanced--literal version of our life now. Your renown doesn’t only affect you as a profile on a social media, but the real-life you, and everything that touches your life. Do people really deserve that? Do our values worth limited only to something that superficial?

At the end of the storyline, Black Mirror depicts how unhealthy and destructive to have that kind of objective. Altering the exteriors is elementary work, but to thrive what’s honest of you is what’s ought to be the real deal.

Music has become part of our lives and we never get enough just to listen to it. Music could describe our traits and at the same time, it could create our social circle too. There are some kinds of music that we’re really into, just like a specific song, album, or even a genre of certain music.

Of course, not everyone has the same taste of music like us, but sometimes it’s easier to find those people if we bravely show it to the others. They share what they’ve been listening to on Spotify or Soundcloud’s and posted it on Instagram story. Don’t you want to know what kind of person you are in a simple 10 up to 100 questions alone? It really is simple, isn’t it, to know what lies beyond your own mask? To peel your skin layer by layer until you find your true self – hoping it would be something wonderful and full of exciting traits.

I’m willing to make a bet that most of you have already taken at least one kind of personality test. You can find a lot these days, the formal one which conducted by experts or maybe the non-formal one you can find on the internet.

There are a lot of options really, like the MyersBriggs Type Indicator (MBTI) or maybe the DISC-profile test, or maybe the Kokology Test, and many others. Most of us take it for fun and some of us take it for research purposes. A lot of educational institute and corporates use one of those tests to know what kind of person they’re hiring or are they qualified.

“I’m an extrovert,” “I’m dominant, you see?”

“I’m a very ‘thinking’ person.”

“I’m turbulent.”

Funny, is it not? By just answering a few questions the internet tells you who you are. After taking these tests, you feel like you understand yourself more, perhaps, in a very two-dimensional way. But humans aren’t that simple, and we’re definitely not as two-dimensional as we seems.

These tests are meant to help us understand ourselves better, not to define who we are as a person. Your tests might show you your current circumstances, but people grow. We could become someone else completely by tomorrow. People learn, as they know their mistake and try to be a better person. Isn’t it ridiculous to practically know someone based on their personality tests’ result?

Different case if you’ve taken one with experts who studies not only your answers but your actions and your emotional test. But the one most of us take is from the internet.

Let’s jump into reality and dive.

Some of us, use a personality test as a justification of our actions. It’s convenient in so many ways for when you’re doing something wrong you could use it to your advantage. You say to yourself that’s just the way you are, it becomes your excuse and your truth. You’re hiding behind the fact that you’re scared of growth and admit you are in the wrong.

Alejandro Ghersi or better known as Arca is a Venezuelan music producer who flew into the orbit after he collaborated with various artists such as FKA twigs on her second EP, Kanye West’s Yeezus and Björk’s Vulnicura and Utopia.

His debut album, Xen, is very interesting due to how Arca can explore the feminine part of himself and interpret it as a personal and unique experimental sound. Jesse Kanda, as his album designer, was told to create this feminine being that Arca imagined when he was a kid. “Those were all projections of my psyche; of how I viewed my own sexuality and how I engaged with people through the lens of sensuality. Xen is an ‘it’. I lean towards calling Xen ‘her’ in response to the fact that society historically leans towards men having more power. Me calling Xen ‘her’ is an equalisation of that.” Arca said, to Dazed.

By exploring his feminine part of his identity, Arca is able to see himself as a whole better. Think if the feminine part as an unknown creek in a mountain that is Arca’s identity. By exploring it, he gains a better insight of who he is. Reflecting on Jung’s Model Of Psyche, there is a thing inside of us called animus – anima, which is our masculinity and femininity. This part of us lives in our subconsciousness, repressed as a shadow of our true self. Meaning that we all have it inside of us; just on the outskirts of our consciousness, affecting our daily life in subtle ways.

Arca brought the animus – anima out of the subconscious realm, calling it a name and visualizing it as something that exists consciously, something completely unprecedented in the music scene.

text by Ruth Dea Juwita illustration by Pininta Taruli Engaging with current ideas about artistic moral evaluation, I wish to emphasize that the concept of a musical persona is more than facts served about their lifestyle, demeanours, and moral characters.

This idea applies in principle to a wide variety of musicians, perhaps to all. In some instances, musical personae are closely identical to specific star-image personages: in performances by flamboyant rock stars or charismatic theatre actors, among others, our perception of the music is interceded by our conception of the performer as personage. This personalism reminds us that performance is one of many ways of communicating, not particularly a work or a composer’s notions, but a person, the performer, through music.

Musical persona is one of many forms of artistic insincerity, and at least two notable categories of insincerity emerge from a disparity between the artist’s public persona, the music performed, and, the artist’s non-performing life. Both kinds of insincerity can be easily found in popular entertainment.

The first type is the more noticeable one, where insincerity is an ethical and, therefore, aesthetic flaw. The second type is the one where duplicity in the creation of a public persona enhances the work ethically and aesthetically. These two categories are important in popular entertainment since it is dominated by song performance.

It’s not a fresh thing in the industry, take an example at Lady Gaga. The superstar is constantly in character, whether she’s onstage, onscreen, or when she’s not performing her music. A brand-new name allows Stefani Germanotta to create a partly-fictional persona, in order to enhance her musical performance. She admitted that it is depicted from the stronger parts of her personality to create the Gaga persona, but the character she presents in public is only part of the person she is in real life. “I invented myself — Lady Gaga.

I curated my life to be an expression of my pain. This is how I overcame my depression is by creating somebody I felt was stronger than me.” She is consciously shapeshifting her Gaga persona throughout her artistic journey, influencing her identity so that people would recognize her music beyond her alter egos and, in the end, all becomes an entity. / 81

On the contrary, Lana Del Rey is known for her divisive figures in music industry because of her deceptive unsurety of who she is. Her early career, just like Lady Gaga and others who share such artistic insincerity, was dogged by criticism from those who found her persona ‘inauthentic’ despite music’s long history of reinvention and self-mythologizing.

Everybody’s suddenly become obsessed with authenticity like a soul-searching talent show judge, when the industry is all about the entertainment. Disparities between performers and their personas do not always generate aesthetic flaws. The reevaluation which emerges from discovery of artistic insincerity in a public persona does not have to generate the exposé of earlier ignored manifest evidence. It’s a waste to try and convince people not to hate. Because, all that matters in the end is that we (or in this case, our music) have been heard.

In a world where living standards are not set by authorities nor fair and commonsensical, a house was built with a wall encircling it. It seems like a nice house, but when you come inside, you can see a forsaken pond full of moss in the garden, and a garage with a wrecked wooden ceiling. That’s actually okay, but the owner doesn’t really like the look of it. You can’t really see it from the outside, for the owner has designed the wall just exactly with that intention. With the wall, there are things kept from the people outside of the property, and it work mostly like surprises. The question is, are those elements of surprise really necessary?

If the surprise was exquisite, it would be well perceived.

But who would yearn for some abysmal surprises?

and its’ If the wall was there, what’s to be hidden must be the broken things. Things the owner would consider to be a weakness, a fault. Those are still attached on site. Unfortunately, those are the truths, but these are what unveil the fear in one self; to not to be acknowledged as a whole package with a slight flaw, and to finally fall on rejection.

You filter the people you let in, choose your trusted ones to see the sides that are not very pleasant. What if they turned their back from you? What if there are holes in the walls that let people walking by see a little bit inside? What if someone climb up the wall and share the vileness they see inside? Would those shatter you?

Tyrion Lannister told us to never forget what we are, because the rest of the world will not. Wear it like an armor, and it can never be used to hurt you. Some people choose to build walls, but some other choose to be whole and content with what they have, and veraciously let others see what’s good and what’s bad of you, making it easier to see which are the ones that would truly be impressed with who you are. As hard as it may seem to do this in reality, it’s always a better option to be contempt with your flaw, not forgetting you also have something sweet of you.

When you see Raihan Zahirah, you see her along with the heaps of her achievements and the title as the most outstanding college student. We see her doing remarkable things, but to her, it’s more like just doing things she enjoys doing. Since middle school, she has found her love of people gathering from many countries, proposing a resolution. That, is how she found herself being in a perfect place for her. Carrying on to doing what she’s fond of, she thrives by expertising on that field and keep getting better, even exceeding the expectation of many, for she knows herself and she’s not gonna chain up what she’s got. For she knows herself, she’s adequate to stand out, and to shine.

Foremost, knowing yourself means knowing what you love to do--and what you do well.

Then, knowing yourself leads to a much easier process of establishing your life goals, and to a competency of competing for various life achievements.

Once and for all, to Raihan, knowing herself gets her to live happily for she is passionate of what she does.

The road to knowing yourself may not be smooth, and you might find yourself stuck in an identity crisis. But Raihan believes everyone’s got their own forte, so the answer is to never stop exploring yourself and utilize your potential.

campaign stories: louis and chika text by Sebastian Duto portraits by Madeleine Suwigyno “Social media made it easy for people to berate us, without giving their identity”, Louis asserts, while we sat down on a cloudy Thursday afternoon in the quiet, greytiled rooftop, joined with drizzle turned rain halfway through our conversation. The period is coming to an end, we had the privilege to sit and talk with the current Student President, Louis and Vice President, Chika on visions for LKM, and their persona and virtual presence.

Almost a year had passed since Louis & Chika is elected; we looked back on how the cabinet implemented their missions to achieve their goals. Akrab Strategis Inklusif (AKSI) are the three visions the LKM are trying to achieve on this period. They approached the vision to be more intimate by being more present in events organized by the Student Unions. They are a few events shy from attending every event in that period. Surveys were done to see the students’ interest on the events LKM made, making this one of their mission to reach a strategic cabinet. On inclusivity, they strive to build a thriving and transparent cabinet. It is ingrained in the culture of LKM to address students’ aspirations.

Looking back to the campaign period, Louis was a man that showed firmness, and Chika was a woman with tenderness. That was their campaign persona. After crowned president, Louis is deemed to be more serious by his peers. As time went by, Louis is trying to erase the all-too-serious persona of his, and is trying to loosen up. Contrary to Louis, Chika was the exact opposite. Her appearance wasn’t a significant matter, and it changed when she ran for VP. Chika is now more logical and rational as opposed to the person she was when she wouldn’t dare to critic others.

The topic of persona elevates the question of the perfect persona for a Student President and Vice President.

The ideal persona, Louis said, is to be friendly and congenial to others as they would need others’ help to run a good cabinet. They have to step in to real issues that were addressed by the students. Generally, an ideal persona for a leader would have to be a good representative to the University, as they are the face of the campus, said Chika. / 89

During the campaign period, the team put out a virtual campaign, mostly active on instagram, filled with their ambitions to put the name of the campus forward. Displaying honestly, the personality behind the man and the woman who would take up the torch as a new period awaits.

It’s not without obstacles when they approached this method. Anonymity is the big factor for people online to spout commentaries.

People unbeknownst to them would give varying critics, terrible or good.

The lack of identity when throwing unconstructive critics gives them no consequences whatsoever. This phenomenon is very common online; Louis and Chika had just a little taste of it. Louis admitted one needs to have a great courage when facing them. The perk of online presence is connectivity. We are more connected 90 /

than ever and it benefits the cabinet in a way that students can give their opinion in an instant and the cabinet can react right through.

The persona exuded by a leader is vital for the cultivation of the group.

Virtual presence helps facilitate their dreams and hopes to be heard without any barriers, but one needs to have a certain amount of patience to handle the criticism, as it can be uglier than in real situations. One of the struggles from people online is the collision between the persona displayed virtually, and the one in real life, as it can be difficult to balance out; Louis & Chika learned to conquer it, and it’s crucial for us to master as we are living in a whole new virtual generation.

We live in a time when we quickly put people in boxes. This is us and that is them. Those who we trust or those who we try to avoid. Those who live in a big city and those who never seen a skyscraper. The politicians, the religious. We put people in boxes –it’s normal. Or are we just used to normalizing it?

The thing is, we don’t know the appropriate parameters to judge other people. The common things that we do, we easily judge people on screen –ignoring reality. In this digital era, going online is a new necessity, while being offline becomes a luxury. People are trying to create a perfect identity, both virtual and real, to pursue the standards constructed by the media. To tick everything on that nonexistent list of ideal ideas. But what is a perfect persona?

According to Oxford dictionary, persona is the aspect of someone’s character that is presented to or perceived by others. Celebrity, for example, has a public persona in which they act as when they’re in front of a camera, as opposed to how they act in private settings. People also tend to maintain this perfect persona as the result of the pressure from their social environment. By conforming, the achieve a state of somewhat satisfaction; from being deemed as acceptable. This means people try to satisfy others more than themselves – which is ironic to say the least.

On the other hand, personality is the specific set of qualities and interests that make somebody unique and unlike others. Like all the results on google said, personality is defined as the characteristic set of behaviors, cognitions, and emotional patterns that evolve from biological and environmental factors.

While our personality is deeply ingrained into us, persona is an entirely different person that someone wishes to portray.

We often create, adapt, and develop our personas without even thinking about it.

Personality is constant, while personas are dynamic based on our surroundings.

Persona can be the truthful picture of the personality. The ideal one is the integration between these two. However, the truth is, most people’s personas could differ from their personality. Especially on the internet, as it is easier to be less genuine, and more people pleasing.

Personalities have flaws, so does personas.

It has been proven that the anonymity provided by the internet can bring the worst sides of people. People can gain power and influence easier with internet persona, instead of the real-life counterpart. They can hide their flaws with the persona they’re creating online without thinking. Even if it raises real-life issues like bullying and fraud.

Regarding all the things above, it all comes down to this: Do you take everything at face-value, or do you care more about what dwells underneath? As it gets easier to create our internet faces, it gets harder to keep every single on in check with our personality. Personalities usually shines through the gaps between personas, since they are an extension of personality. Devilish baby was born, brought happiness to bleeding uterus and sweating eyes. Evil but joyful, as different circumstances define your self-interpretation, even the doctor was not as happy as the devil’s parents. By what definition? which ideal can liberate you? Or what kind of bars that imprisons you?

You used to enjoy playground and hate the day-nap, now you get annoyed by kid and favoring over alcohol. Yet, you are behind bars caused by your holy sin of humanistic nature: loving, thinking, feeling, and growing. Temporary joy transformed on to an evil being as you found your true self, holy sin.

Existing medium of social media provides virtual police of the majority idealistic, functioning to capture and maneuver differences to become the public enemy.

Eventually crying over yourself to fit the mode, buy the whitening soap, use the fake eyebrows: beautification by all means, modification of personality to achieve majority aims. Countering them, we as well transform our personality through the medium, reaching justification to get out from the abstract prison and torture of breathing different air.

Human beings are not one-dimensional.

We, in instance, are dynamic with so many layers.

An altered persona—a disparity of oneself— is something anyone can use to step closer to the light of their true image. We’re used to see celebrities sharing their story with the world as a way to express their onstage performance and to distinguish them with their personal, nonperforming life.

The focal reason behind creating altered persona is to escape from the reality. On some point, we can all think of a time we weren’t being ourselves.

We may have committed ourselves to things that don’t align with our personal beliefs. We may have squirmed listening to someone with higher authority talk about something we don’t believe in. We get stuck, and maybe even forget the errand leaving ourselves in existential flux. There are elements in reality which we are uncomfortable with and we just wish to run away from it. The effect is that the certain issues from which we are escaping don’t receive our attention and, therefore, remain unresolved. These are often buried deeply in the back of our mind, and they just stay there like a time-bomb waiting to explode.

When we deny our truth, we may hurt ourselves deeply.

It fosters guilt, conveys shame, and creates sorrow. I’ve felt it numerous of times during teenagerhood and I don’t want it happen again. Back then, I could get so wrapped up in what other people think, sometimes I find myself feeling a glimpse of anxiety and even discontent. For a moment I don’t even know why, is it because of what I eat for lunch, how I dress, how I code-switch – what is it? It feels like I’m a million miles from my prior mood, crashed on a road of discomfort and I don’t know how I ended up there. I tried to blend in by wearing what everybody wears, do what everybody does, simply to suit public’s desires and expectations. It feels like trying to fit a square into a circle, it’s uncomfortable and unnecessary.

On the other hand, people also find that creating an altered persona can make them feel keen to “go beyond” for what they want in their lives. The process won’t happen overnight; in fact, it may take quite a while to develop. Essentially, we’ve already worn different kind of personas by simply existing. The person I am when I’m with my family is different from the person I am when I’m surrounded by my close friends is different from the person I am when I’m sitting in a classroom where my crush on the opposite side of the room. They’re all me, but with different façades of my personality dialled up (or even down) to suit the requirements of the circumstances.

It merely creates the compulsory critical distance between me and my objectives, and gives me an explicit persona to step into when I need more than myself to do something.

Shapeshifting influenced myself up to achievements and possibilities that regular me would never even consider in the first place.

With a healthy dose of self-reflection, I believe altered persona can serve a purpose in our daily life. Eventually, though, we’ll probably outgrow the needs and start living it as a one identity. Living your own truth can be frightening but it also empowering. But, with a bit of selfpowered charisma boost, it would help us see ourselves in a new light — and that can never be a bad thing.

because sometimes you get one word that is the embodiment of the idea of you but other times no matter how hard you try to fit a word on to an idea some things are just not meant to fit together some things are not meant for lengthy adjectives some things are just more noun than others some things won’t be anything but a subject
