We began our 2023-24 school year with the theme of The Future is Now, focused on making and strengthening connections across every aspect of our school culture, community, and academic program We prioritized creating connections within classrooms, across grade levels, and school-wide. We leaned on the traditions that make Highlands School such a special place - our morning meetings, advisory, sharing stories and experiences, community meetings, buddy activities, and so much more
Throughout the school year, our north star was Year Two of our Setting the Bar for Excellence and Innovation: Strategic Plan 2022-27 focusing on the student experience, building special connections across the school, and ensuring that we deliver an academically challenging program that prepares our students to be productive members of our greater community.
As part of our three-year Teaching and Learning Plan, we spent the year learning about and utilizing the latest Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) science to develop and strengthen excellent teaching and expert teachers Excellent teaching includes implementing best practices; nurturing relationships, mental health, and well-being of students; and applying strategies from highquality, research-informed professional development to engage all students in deep and deliberate enduring learning
In Year One of our Teaching and Learning Plan, we focused on:
Best practices in teaching and learning related to curriculum design, assessment (formative and summative), student feedback, metacognitive strategies, self-reflection, scaffolding, differentiation, arts integration, etc
Continued work with SEL and DEIB to build classroom communities, develop connections, validate student identities, instill growth mindsets, and create supportive and safe environments
Professional development opportunities, including partnering with the Center for Transformative Teaching and Learning (CTTL), visiting schools who are already partnering with the CTTL, as well as participating in webinars, microcourses, and other mind, brain, and education science learning opportunities Our faculty read NeuroTeach and our Directors of Teaching & Learning attended the CTTL’s Science of Teaching and School Leadership Academy This provided opportunities for our entire faculty to focus on MBE science through faculty meetings as well as committee work in this area

A Higher Degree of Learning I didn’t understand what those words meant at six years old when I stepped on Highlands’ campus for my first day, but as the years went by, I saw myself become a living embodiment of the Highlands mission.
At Highlands, students are taught the importance of lifelong learning, character, and service; values that still serve as a guide for the kind of woman I strive to be
One of the most significant things I gained from Highlands was courage; the courage to speak out against injustice, the courage to do things that scare me, and the courage to fail, learn from it, and try again
In middle school I was dubbed the “social butterfly” and began to understand that people were my passion At twelve years old, I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician, but after Highlands gave me the opportunity to shadow a doctor for a day, I was lucky to learn so early that medicine would not be my path Because of the emphasis on global learning and civic engagement, Highlands helped me realize I wanted to fulfill my passion for people through politics and government
It’s now been eleven years since I graduated from Highlands, and the community made there coupled with the personal and professional skills learned in and out of the classroom has brought me to the United States Senate
As a member of US Senator Jon Ossoff’s communications team, I use the strong writing, public speaking, and leadership skills learned at Highlands every day. My ability to confidently engage with constituents, advocate on behalf of Georgians, and write clearly and concisely to keep the State informed of the work being done for them all began the day I sat in Ms. Wesson’s second grade class for the first time I can say with certainty that I would not be walking in my purpose so early in my career had it not been for the foundation that I received at Highlands, and I am thankful to be a lifelong member of the Highlands community
Last fall, we hosted alumni and past faculty for a party and walk down memory lane in the Frog Garden It was a lovely evening spent catching up and sharing memories made at this special place

“Good, better, best Never take a rest Until your good is better and your better is best.” This little rhyme has bounced around my head since hearing it as a student at Highlands School. It's not anywhere on the website. As far as I can remember, it was not written on a wall anywhere either Yet it has stuck with me and reminded me of the values that Highlands taught me when I was a student there
I am now 23 years old and recently back in the United States after spending a year in Taiwan In May 2023, I graduated from Washington and Lee University, and a few months later arrived in Taiwan to serve a teaching grant through the Fulbright Program I spent eleven months living in a rural town, driving my scooter to school every day, and working with local teachers to improve English education for their students It was an incredible experience characterized by cultural learning, personal growth, and deep fulfillment This year, I am participating in The Trinity Fellowship, a leadership development program focused on helping young professionals further discern their vocational direction and delve deeper into questions of the Christian faith, in Charlottesville, VA
While a teaching assistant in Taiwan, I worked at an amazing K-8 school a short walk from the beach Teachers cared about making personal connections with students An abundance of help and resources were made available to students who needed it The campus was beautiful, and students participated in a host of enriching activities, including campouts, sailing excursions, and an immersion trip to Nepal. Walking through its courtyard every day, I often thought that this place really reminded me of Highlands. It took me a little while to understand the depth of the similarities.
Highlands is unique in that it is a close community Teachers, faculty and staff demonstrate a high level of care for that community not merely by teaching their students, but by striving to holistically improve them This school in Taiwan practiced care for their community very explicitly every morning Before any classes are taught, the school intercom plays “Skin” (Rag‘n’Bone Man), calling all students and teachers to work together to clean their campus You can find the second grade hunting down stray leaves on the basketball court, the fifth grade wiping desks, and the sixth cleaning the bathrooms Younger students are assigned work, while older students float around, helping where they see it is needed By 8:15 AM, the music stops, and everyone trots back to their classrooms to begin a day’s work learning math, science, Chinese, history, and English
“Good, better, best. Never take a rest. Until your good is better, and your better is best.”
Perhaps what has been so compelling to me about this saying was the person who shared it with our community Mr Bender, the Director of Facilities, daily had the mission of looking around our community, seeing what needed fixing, and not resting until it was fixed I remember feeling a strong sense of pride when the entire school, at a community meeting once a year, would reaffirm our commitment to improvement by reciting this all together. In the years since, it has echoed in my head, calling me to continual self-reflection and improvement, both of myself and in the community around me.

As part of our continued growth and work on our Strategic Plan, the Directors of Teaching and Learning along with three of our Highlands School teachers, representing various grade bands, spent two days learning from other educational institutions in Atlanta. They visited The Mount Vernon School, The Galloway School, and The Lovett School. During each visit, they had the opportunity to tour the campuses and meet with faculty and administrators to learn more about their teaching and learning practices, fine arts offerings, STEAM programs, and much more. As they foster such in each of their students, their deep love of learning inspires them to continue pursuing professional development opportunities

Highlands School’s Mission is to provide an academically challenging program, to create a love of learning in every student, to instill the habits of success in every student, and to prepare the student to be a responsible and productive member of the community
Highlands School has adopted the phrase “The Highlands Way”, which refers to the shared set of core values embraced by all students, staff and faculty as an integral part of their everyday life in the Highlands School community
The Highlands Way core values are: Integrity Respect Responsibility Compassion Collaboration
