WELCOME TO THE 2021 HIGHLAND FLING, our annual city celebration! This year we are excited to start the Fling off with a family dinner event in Mitchell Hollow Park, where you can see some of the recent improvements we’ve made.

Our theme for this year’s Fling is Reach. Let’s use the various events during the week to reach out to each other after a challenging year and come together as a community. Our staff, local businesses, and many volunteers have put together a wonderful week of activities where we can spend time together, share our talents, and serve others. Thank you so very much!

A member of our community, Jeff Dyer, co-authored a book several years ago entitled The Innovator’s DNA: Mastering the Five Skills of Disruptive Innovators. In it he points out that according to Dr. Jonas Salk, “You don’t invent the answers, you reveal the answers” by “finding the right question.”

Here are some questions for which some aspect of the Fling may be the answer.

History of Highland

LOCATED ON A BENCH AREA of the Wasatch Mountain Range in northern Utah County, Highland was settled by homesteaders in the 1870s. John Poole built the first house in the area in 1875. Highland was officially incorporated as a city in 1977 and is now home to more than 19,000 residents.

Highland is located at the mouth of American Fork Canyon and sits on a high plateau at the base of

Mt. Timpanogos. Timpanogos Cave National Monument, a collection of caverns accessed by a 1.5 mile hike up a mountainside in American Fork Canyon, is accessed through Highland, as is the Alpine Scenic Loop, a beautiful drive winding through the mountains east of the city. Inside the city are a variety of more than 20 parks for residents to enjoy including the beautiful Highland Glen which features a pond for fishing,

Parade Grand Marshals: Larry and Lori Mendenhall HIGHLAND CITY Larry and Lori Mendenhall moved to Highland in 1978 on Country Club Drive and lived there for about 20 years when they decided they wanted to build their own home in 1999. They built a barn with an apartment above it in the Bull River neighborhood and lived in the apartment for two years before they finished their home on the same property. The Mendenhalls loved living in the studio-like apartment, and they would have been happy to stay there, but they needed more room so that they could care for Lori’s mother.

The Mendenhalls have been community members of Highland before it actually became a city.

Larry remembers the council meeting when the discussion to make Highland a city came about.

He was pretty skeptical about the decision to become an established city but worked together with other council and community members to make it happen. Larry was even part of the planning and layout of the beautiful Highland while serving as the Chair of the Planning Commission. He has also served on the city council.

Lori has been his support the whole time. She is very service oriented and has her own personal motto of “Be generous. Be kind.”

She is very concerned about others and their wellbeing. During our interview, Lori was concerned about how long I had been away from my family making sure I wasn’t gone too long.

It shows in all aspects of her life. Both Lori and Larry have helped out numerous couples and individuals by letting them live in the

apartment above their barn and helping them to get back on their feet.

The kindness that Lori shows, is certainly not a sign of any weakness. That shows by how she takes care of her horses and the support she showed Larry when he ran a cattle farm in Torrey, Utah for five years. Lori has worked in banking for the past 40+ years and was living here in Highland while Larry lived in Torrey working with cattle. One day Lori decided she had had enough and reminded Larry where their home was and that she was married to him, not the cows.

Larry wasn’t always a cow man, he took that on as a hobby later in life. He actually started as an accountant for a helicopter services company called Million Air. He eventually became manager of the company. He managed it long enough that he decided that he wanted to go out on his own and start up his own helicopter services. Larry started up not one, but two companies dealing with helicopter services.

He loves the challenge of starting up a business and getting them going. Once the business has reached a successful and stable point, Larry likes to move on to the next project.

and Lori have been valuable assets to the Highland community.

They are the kind of people we can aspire to be. Larry says, “Our life has been a remarkable adventure. Not one without some regrets, but I think the fabric of it has stayed intact.” That’s all we can hope for our lives to be, an adventure and one worth living.

Cash awards will be presented in each category. Additional awards are given overall from the art council, Highland City and for best theme. The theme is “Reach!”

There will be cash awards for the Best of Show winners selected from each category by the judges. The Peoples’ Choice Award will be selected by the viewing public.

Artwork in the show will be released on Saturday, Aug. 7, from 4 to 7 pm. All artwork must be picked up during this time. A $5 late fee will be applied to those who do not pick up artwork during this time. Late items may be paid for and picked up from the arts council.

Every effort will be made to keep your artwork safe, but please be aware that there is no guarantee due to unforeseen accidents.

There will be hand-painted greeting cards available for purchase and a silent auction to help raise funds for the arts council, which is a nonprofit organization.

The arts council depends on donation to provide arts opportunities for our community.

THE FINE ART SHOW is a traditional feature of the Highland Fling and serves to showcase the work of artists in our community. Join us for this inspiring event and enjoy viewing samples of some of Highland City’s finest artists.

Members of the public are invited to enter their works in this show. The following age divisions will be offered: Professional Adult, Amateur Adult, High School, Junior High, Intermediate (fourth through sixth grades), and Primary (preschool through third grades).

Media categories in the show will be as follows: Oil, Water Media, Mixed Media, Drawing (hand-drawn and computergenerated), Chalk/Pastel, Photography, Sculpture, and Woodworking.

Adult entries must be framed in all media categories. Youth/child entries must be framed, matted or mounted on card stock. Various classes of competitors are available for registration and the events are free to watch.

Utah Heavy Athletics (UHA) has organized these competitions for years and will be hosting a

Strongman/woman competition from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Friday Aug. 6th featuring athletes from all around who will prove their toughness by performing feats of strength such as overhead pressing, weighted carries, and heavy boulder lifting to name a few.

COME TRY OUT the Beacon Hill Park Disc Golf Course as it’s one of the popular activities of the Highland Fling. The course features a wide open front nine in a park setting and a very challenging “Outback Nine.” Both red and blue tee options are available throughout the course and offer incredible views of Utah Valley, Utah Lake, and the Rocky Mountains that surround the cities of Highland and Alpine. The course features large expanses of open grass, natural fields, established scrub oak forests, and bluffs overlooking a (usually) dry creek, all perfect for hucking discs into challenging basket locations.

Registration is open to everyone.

The Trilogy Challenge is your chance to prove your skill with a level playing field in regards to discs.

Players are only allowed to play in the tournament with the three 2021 discs they receive in their player pack; if a disc is lost during the round, they must finish the round without it. Player pack includes three discs (putter, mid-range, driver), and mini disc maker. Players get everything they need to play disc golf for on $35!

The Medallion Hunt INTRODUCING— the Highland City Fling Inaugural Medallion Hunt!

This year, a unique medallion will be hidden on public ground within Highland City limits. Clues leading to the hiding spot of the medallion will be read daily during the Fling. The first clue will be read at the Fling Kickoff event: The Highland City Block Party (Mon. Aug. 2nd at 6:00 pm). Remaining clues will be read everyday at 10:00 am at the Historic Cabin in Heritage Park (and published on Facebook about an hour after the live reading). This will be an on-going event beginning at the kickoff of the Fling and continuing until it is confirmed found by an event organizer. The Medallion Hunt is a family friendly event that will get all treasure hunters, explorers, and adventurers outside, exploring, and learning more about Highland. The prize for the finder will be the medallion itself and a $200 cash award. Stay tuned for more information!

Highland City Facebook page will have all pertinent information about the medallion hunt as it is released.
