HIGHLAND ACADEMY'S ANNUAL HANDSHAKE!

Sunday, August 13 after registration, we began a time honored tradition at Highland Academy. All of the students were invited to our annual handshake It began with our SA pastor leading out in worship and singing some songs Then on to playing mixer games that produced confusion, excitment and laughs as they raced around the gym learning more about each other At the end of the evening, we all lined up from freshmen to staff and began shaking each others hands, introducing ourselves and saying welcome!

We combed the schools library yearbooks starting with 1952 and the first picture we were able to find of handshake was from 1972, as pictured above This handshake event continues to be an important piece of Highland history, which makes us proud to continue by welcoming students into the Highland family

PROJECTS ON CAMPUS

When the class of 1983 graduated, they wanted to leave behind a legacy for all students, staff and visitors to enjoy It was decided to put their funds toward a gazebo in the center of campus No one could have anticipated that it would become a symbol of the school today

The gazebo logo is found all over our campus! It's the official logo of our school and is placed on all paperwork, emails, maps, school calendar/handbooks and student spirit wear.

However, the gazebo has seen better days. The wood is rotting due to the environment, while birds and wasps are building their nests and chipping away at the wood Just recently a student was sitting on a bench reading, when suddenly they jumped up and ran away yelling! Those around didn't know what was happening He was stung by a wasp Then the small attacker proceeded to chase

two other staff members until his fate was met with a shoe on the concrete It took 2-4 cans of wasp spray to temporarily fix ithe issue Talking with Andy Wade, our head of grounds and landscaping, we came to the realization that the the gazebo has many large nests inside and that the foundation of the structure is diminishing and seems to be getting worse.

This wonderful symbol of our campus does not need to disappear, but it does need to be renovated, and the concrete needs replaced.

If you find that this is an important project to you, please consider donating by mailing a check or online by clicking General Donation and noting "Gazebo Project " We are estimating the cost to be $50,000 00 including the concrete replacement
