Before the adoption of the modern Gregorian calendar in 1752, the New Year was celebrated on what is now 14 January and in some parts of the Highlands, this tradition survived until the early part of the 20th century. The Atholl Country Life Museum’s popular celebration of DAILY DIARY EVENTS the Auld New Year is a ceilidh which recalls the traditions of this festival with an evening of Scottish music, song and dance until after “the bells”.

A Scottish folk legend, guitarist, singer/songwriter, composer and orchestrator, is the only performer to hold the dual honour of a Lifetime Achievement award by BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and induction in2009 into the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame, an award which celebrates exceptional contribution to the Scottish traditional music scene.

Born in Glasgow from Irish parents, Gaughan was brought up immersed in the musical traditions and culture of the Gaels, both Scots and Irish, and this provided the foundation for everything he’s ever done, since he picked up his first guitar at the tender age of 7 years old.

Fundraiser talk in aid of Birnam Arts, generously given by Adrian Davis of Wildoutdoors.

The debate rages on about what is the most ecologically and environmentally friendly energy. From nuclear to coal, hydro to wind, this talk examines the real life issues and methods for determining these ecological impacts, looking at how energy developments affect our wildlife and habitats, from otters to ospreys.

This is the second fundraising talk that Adrian Davis has given – previously, his Wildcat talk was a hugely popular event, and raised much needed funds for Birnam Arts.

Adrian is a wildlife expert and ecologist with a special understanding of animal behaviour, with extensive knowledge of Scottish wildlife.

He’s worked on golden eagle, otter and wildcat surveys, and has an amazing bank of knowl-

edge of Scottish wildflowers and their herbal properties.

He is the director of Wildoutdoors – now in its ninth year - leading a team of enthusiastic ecologists who offer guided wildlife holidays.

The team is renowned for its specialist skills and experience of a large range of habitats, from the smallest invertebrates to the largest mammals.

Tonight’s talk will be full of facts, some figures, and some surprises about the relation between modern-day energy developments and the ecology and environment – there will be a chance at the end of the talk to probe Adrian’s extensive knowledge with any burning questions… he’s sure to have the answer!
