THE FORTINGALL YEW TREE estimated as being between 3,000 and 5,000 years old. Acknowledged as Europe’s oldest tree. In 1769 the tree’s girth was 56ft (over 17 metres). Tradition has it that Pontius Pilate was born here whilst his father was on a mission from Caesar to a Caledonii King. The Yew tree is in Fortingall church yard. OPEN all year, free entry.

CASTLE MENZIES - an outstanding example of a C16th “Z” plan fortified house. The seat of the Chiefs of Clan Menzies owned by the Menzies Clan who were heavily involved in the turbulent history of the highlands, Bonnie Prince Charlie rested for two nights in the Castle on his way to the Battle of Culloden in 1746. See the Menzies Claymore (sword) used by the Chief at the Battle of Bannockburn.

CROFT MORAIG ‘Mary’s croft’, is a stone circle comprised of 8 standing stones in an oval setting at about 7m diameter followed by a second circle of 12 standing stones about 12m in diameter.

Excavations in 1965 found pottery of local Neolithic origin dating to 300BC. Access is through the gate into the field. Explanation plaques tell you the whole story. Located in a farm field on the left of the road on the A827 from Aberfeldy to Kenmore.

DRUMMOND HILL: One of Scotland’s Oldest Managed forests initially planted by Black Duncan the Laird of Breadalbane in the 17th Century. It offers an easy 4.5 miles uphill walk, with the reward of an absolutely fabulous view over Kenmore from Black Rock. Way marked routes, maintained by the Forestry Commission of Scotland. Starts from the Forestry Drummond Hill car park, a short distance from The Mains of Taymouth Courtyard.

The medieval DUNKELD CATHEDRAL, on the banks of the River Tay. The C13th choir of the cathedral is used as the parish church.

Through the church in the in the C15th sacristy there is a small museum.

The Cathedral Tower was built in 1469. There are some rare Medieval carved stones, and also a stone from the first church, showing a man on horseback blowing a horn and holding a spear. Behind the High Alter you will find King Robert II’s son, the Wolf of Badenoch who was excommunicated by the Pope and in a rage burnt down the towns of Elgin and Forres, destroying Elgin Cathedral in 1390. He was forced to make public penance in sackcloth and ashes at Balckfriars Monastery in Perth in front of his brother King Robert III. Guided tours available by Friends of Dunkeld Cathedral.

NEIL GOW Born at Inver, Strathbraan in 1727, the son of a weaver. He became a renowned fiddler & regarded as the father of the Strathspey & Reel music. Neil Gow’s Tree a gnarled oak adjoining his croft is where he used play, and his friend the Duke of Atholl used to listen from across the river. Successive Dukes of Atholl became his patron, an account book contains his signature for wages of £5 a yr in 1770. His portrait by Henry Raeburn, and his famous fiddle are still to be seen in Blair Castle, Neil Gow’s cottage at Inver (is now a private residence).

Highlights eight way-marked trails, including a map, covering a total of nearly 36 miles of paths and tracks in the countryside surrounding Dunkeld, Birnam, Inver and Fungarth. The countryside is noted for its flora, places of interest and associations with the famous fiddler Neil Gow, the writer Beatrix Potter and the naturalist Charles Macintosh. PITLOCHRY DAM AND FISH LADDER WALK. This short walk, taking 30-45 mins, starts in the middle of Pitlochry. It goes down and along the River Tummel, through the ancient settlement of Port-nacraig to the fish ladder and observation room, over the dam wall and back into Pitlochry. Along the route are the Festival Theatre, Port-na-craig Inn and The Dam Visitor Centre (see page 1).

PITLOCHRY DAM was constructed between 1947 and 1951, creating Loch Faskally some 5km in length. In order to allow on average some 5,000 salmon to pass upstream each year, a 311m long fish ladder was created incorporating a viewing window in 1 of the 3 resting pools. Follow the footprints on the map.

THE SOLDIERS OF KILLIECRANKIE. The Battle of Killiecrankie was the first Jacobite battle on the 27th July 1689, a major victory for the highland clans.

Where hand grenades were first used on the British mainland, the last battle where the two handed sword, of William Wallace’s fame was used. Way-marked Trails: This 10-page booklet provides details of 6 way-marked routes ranging from 1 mile to 10 miles through woodlands, along rivers and over heather-clad hills. Cycle Routes from Blair Atholl: This booklet highlights 4 cycle trails with a detailed area map included. THE FALLS OF BRUAR. Long have the Falls drawn visitors - travellers, poets, artists, nobility and royalty - to view the wild grandeur of the Falls and their surroundings. In 1787, Robert Burns wrote a poem pleading with the Duke of Atholl to plant its banks with trees. Only after Burns’ death in 1796 did the Duke plant 60,000 larch and Scots pines.

In 1844, the mature trees enchanted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their visit. The well marked route is just over one mile long. OPEN all year. North of Pitlochry on B8079.

THE ATHOLL GATHERING hosted by the Duke of Atholl, the games chieftain, takes place on the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May every year. It incorporates many of the time honoured traditions of a Highland Gathering, when clan members feats of strength and endurance where tested. The Atholl Highlanders march on the games field around 1pm. It is the first and one of the best highland games of the year. An excellent embankment gives a grand view of the arena.
