THIS WEEK’S BIG READ: THE GREAT STORM OF 1987

In mid-October 1987, a once-in-200-year storm descended on the UK Galeforce winds of 100mph blew 15 million trees away, damaged buildings, and wrecked many boats on Britain’s coast. 18 people died as a result.

The Met Office - who forecast the UK’s weather - faced criticism for no giving enough warning about the storm’s high winds in their reports. Because the storm was so unusual, the forecasting models had not bee able to predict the conditions as th normally would. Since then, many improvements have been made.

FARMERS UP IN ARMS

Thousands of UK farmers have been protesting in London over the Government’s changes to farm inheritance tax. Some argue that the change, which will affect a number of British farms, could make farming much harder.

SNOW AROUND THE UK

New weather warnings were issued around the UK ahead of snowy spells in Wales, Northern England and Scotland. Temperatures have stayed below freezing in lots of places in what is being described as “the first taste of winter”.

NO AID REACHING GAZA

The UN has reported that Palestinian are facing evermore dire conditions in Northern Gaza. No aid deliveries have been allowed to Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia and Jabalia for 40 days. It is estimated that 65,000-75,000 Palestinians live in these regions.
