THIS WEEK’S BIG READ: THE GREAT STORM OF 1987
In mid-October 1987, a once-in-200-year storm descended on the UK Galeforce winds of 100mph blew 15 million trees away, damaged buildings, and wrecked many boats on Britain’s coast. 18 people died as a result.
The Met Office - who forecast the UK’s weather - faced criticism for no giving enough warning about the storm’s high winds in their reports. Because the storm was so unusual, the forecasting models had not bee able to predict the conditions as th normally would. Since then, many improvements have been made.
