Messagefromtheheadteacher
Lots in the news this week about TikTok inspired student protests and even ‘riots’ in a number of schools due to issues such as access to toilets and skirt length. The thing that interests me about these stories is the extent to which some families share public criticism of the school. I always respond promptly to any family who is unhappy with school decisions and feel that families have an absolute right to criticise me and my leadership team. When the criticism is public and (often) anonymous it results in students losing confidence in the authority of school adults. The crucial problem then is that the undermining of school authority on one issue (skirts, or toilets, for example) almost always reduces the school’s ability to deal authoritatively with other issues such as bullying, safety, unkind or cruel behaviour, racism etc. This often has direct implications for the wellbeing of children. I mention this not because I expect anyone to support unconditionally school leadership teams, but because I am keen that all consequences are considered before engaging in public attacks on the authority of those who look after children in schools.
Meanwhile, back in the wonderful classrooms of Highfields, Nicole has been working on her ‘box chicken’ in design and technology and Y7 food tech students turned out this delectable table of pasta salad which incorporated elements as diverse as halloumi cheese, crispy bacon and orange (ooh la la).
Elsewhere on Tuesday a Ukrainian student spoke into his phone and held it up for Mr Hodkin to read, courtesy of Google Translate. The message read, ‘do you like condensed milk?’. Mr Hodkin indicated tentatively that he did and the student darted away excitedly and returned with, in Mr Hodkin’s words, ‘the nicest cake slash biscuit thing I have ever eaten’. I have obviously issued a detention to the lad for offering biscuit type treats to the wrong senior leader.
And on Thursday Y7 and 8 students celebrated World Book Day with an emoji quiz in form time (can you guess the book title?*). On upper site, sixth formers also celebrated WBD with a variety of costumes (you’ll have to use your imagination here because I didn’t have time to get photos).
Research suggests that successful Y11 students are now revising for around 2 hours per evening and significantly more at weekends. Please support your Y11 child to do as much as they can to get GCSE results which will help them get to the next exciting stage of their careers.
Whether your child is up to their neck in revision aids/ websites or just hanging out, I hope you pass a pleasant and restful weekend.
