Message from the Headteacher

Rather than babble on about the four-day week we’ve had I thought I would share a response to the surveys you completed in March. Companies make good money specialising in the compilation of surveys because it is a very hard thing to do. We, by contrast, are amateurs; but I do hope that at least our approach to surveys shows that we do want to know how people feel about what we are doing…

A lovely by-product of surveys is that we are able to reflect back to staff some positive reflections on their work. This increases the chances of our retaining great people at Highfields.

Key Findings from Surveys (Spring 2025)

When we analyse surveys we are looking for strong trends where a high proportion of respondents are highlighting the same issues. However, in looking for these trends, all senior leaders read each and every response and take them into account when planning policy. On this occasion we were pleased to note that many comments were encouraging but, as always, respondents also offered feedback suggesting that we have plenty to work on.

Staff responses: 28/168 (16%)

Student responses: 612/1,300 (47%)

Family responses: 110/1,300 (8%)

Commentary

We asked about mobile phones. The majority of responses from families (90%) suggested that the current policy should continue to be applied. A huge variety of parental views were shared with no clear consensus emerging. The school has completed a cost/benefit analysis of trialling a mandatory smart phone hand-in system for Y7 and concluded that costs would outweigh benefits (see parental letter February 2025). We will continue to be clear that smartphones are not required at Highfields School and we hope that families will continue to make informed decisions about their children’s possession/use of personal devices. We have tightened up our policy and practice to minimise misuse of this and other technologies.

Students widely agreed that the current policy should be continued. A number of students asked why ‘allow free use of mobile phones’ was not given as an option. It was not included because neither governors nor SLT (nor national government) have any intention of considering a more permissive approach to use of personal devices on school site.

We asked how you thought we should spend any modest surplus. Although we gave you limited information it was evident through family, student and staff responses that IT and toilets were a priority. We have a number of projects planned including renewal of some key servers, updating of computers in art rooms and the library at upper site. We are also building new Y11 toilets and have earmarked Y7 girls’ toilets as a priority.

Staff responses to spending focused on IT with more than one response focusing on the improvement of student laptops. We aim to partly address this through an increase of IT capacity as referenced above.

We asked what we should focus on in our improvement plan 25-26. No clear trends emerged here from families but investment in IT was raised again by a number of respondents. SEN was referenced and we have already planned against the one area for improvement mentioned in our January Ofsted report.

A number of staff respondents focused on student behaviours, aspiration and attitudes involving a more consistent and focused approach in classrooms.

On the question around homework around 75% of families said that homework is ‘a balance of quiz / recall activities and open-ended activities’. Around 55% of staff who responded felt that they focused on setting recall and retrieval style homework.

Regarding parents’ evenings, most family respondents favoured a blend of face-to-face and virtual and/or all virtual meetings (57 responses) with a smaller group preferring face-to-face meetings only (45 responses). We intend to continue with a blended approach in 25-26.

Key takeaways for school:

• Prioritise IT and toilets for school spending

• Tighten mobile phone policy so that any misuse is minimised

• Ensure Ofsted Area for Improvement is actioned fully
