Newsletter Parent/Carer Notices Reminder - Year 7 sponsorship money for 4 July sponsored walk The Year 7s set themselves a fundraising target of £3,200 and they would greatly appreciate your help in reaching this target. Your donations from the sponsored walk on 4 July will help us reach our goal and benefit three chosen charities. As a school we consider it important for students to be involved in charitable work, reaching out into the community and the wider-world. We know that many students and their families already have many charity commitments, but we do believe that this collective action, spearheaded by the students, is an important part of them gelling as a year group and developing a real sense of the positive difference they can make by working together. Students have been reminded that the deadline for the sponsor monies is Monday 16 July and we are asking students to bring this in as quickly as possible – please ensure any sponsorship money collected is returned in an envelope addressed to Mrs Green. We greatly appreciate your support with this and if you can encourage your child to remember to bring the sponsor money in on time, this will hopefully enable us to inform them they have reached their target in their final Year 7 assembly on Tuesday 17 July. Thank you for your help and support.

Highfields parent/carer survey You will have recently received a letter from Andrew Marsh, our new headteacher from September, outlining his aims for Highfields. In the letter he mentioned he would be sending out a survey to students, parents/carers and staff to enable everyone to contribute views on the school’s improvement priorities. The survey has been emailed out to you this week and we would very much like as many parents/carers as possible to take part in the survey. Students have been emailed with a link to their survey through their school email accounts which they can access through the school website. We would like to receive all responses in by 20 July deadline and appreciate you taking a few minutes to answer the six survey questions. All responses will go directly to Mr Marsh.

Newsletter Challenge Day on Friday 20 July Challenge Day will take place at upper school site to allow all students to participate in activities in their House groups. The timetable for the school day has been amended to allow for an early closure at 1.45pm for the start of the summer holiday. The theme for the day is based around ‘HMS Highfields’ and all students and staff are invited to dress up in costume for the day following this theme. Students will be asked to pay £1 in order to receive a HMS Highfields ‘activity’ pass. This pass will allow them to have access to all the various activities available on the 2018 Challenge Day. The usual timetable of lessons will be suspended and students will be involved in a day of individual and team ‘challenges’, year group celebrations and awards, with a range of activities based around the theme of the day. Activities will be based in classrooms and on the field. In the event of bad weather, the event will transfer inside. The day will end with awards from the challenges being presented. Catering - a range of light refreshments and snacks will be available throughout the morning from the tuck shop and ice-cream stall. Students will need to bring money with them if they wish to purchase these items. Burgers, sausage and chips (including vegetarian options) will be served for lunch in the canteen and students can pay via the cashless catering system as normal. Students who have free school meals should have ordered their sandwich lunch which can be collected from the canteen. School transport - bus companies have been informed to take students to Lumsdale who normally catch school transport in the morning. Students from Starkholmes who do not usually catch a bus will need to make their own transport arrangements to Lumsdale as there will be no bus service available from the Starkholmes site. Contract buses (G&J Holmes, Slacks and Andrews buses) will collect students at the end of the day between 1.45pm-2pm. The three local service buses (Littles, Your Bus and Hulleys local service bus) are unable to amend their timetable to collect students early. Students who usually catch these service buses will need to make their own arrangements.

Newsletter Maths Puzzle Zone

This week’s maths quiz is … Last week, Tom and Sophie bought some stamps for their collections. Each stamp Tom bought cost him £1.10, whilst Sophie paid 70p for each of her stamps. Between them they spent exactly £10. How many stamps did they buy in total?

Solution:

See next week’s newsletter

Last week’s maths quiz answer … 'Saturn' chocolate bars are packed either in boxes of 5 or boxes of 12. What is the smallest number of full boxes required to pack exactly 2005 'Saturn' bars?

Solution: 2005/12 = 167 remainder 1. So, if 167 of the larger boxes are used 1 bar will remain. It follows that if 166 larger boxes are used there will 13 bars left (not a multiple of 5). However, if 165 of the larger boxes are used this will leave 25 bars, which can be packed into 5 of the smaller boxes. Total number of boxes is 165 + 5 = 170

School to Home communication In order to improve communication with parents/carers and to reduce the substantial cost and environmental impact associated with the amount of paper and photocopying involved in school mailings all correspondence is sent to parents/carers via email only. Our aim is that only students’ Assessment Profiles/Data Sheets, and of course, confidential or personal mail will be posted home. We fully understand that some parents/carers may wish to continue to have paper copies sent home rather than to receive communication by email and we will make arrangements to ensure that it is possible for this to continue upon request. Please contact the relevant Pastoral Manager at school to update your details if you do not currently receive email communications from Highfields: Mrs Green - Years 7 & 8 Mr Tidmarsh - Years 9, 10 & 11 Mrs Bumby - Sixth Form
