Can you access healthy food choices in your community?

1 Food for thought

Individual reflection (1 min)

Take a moment to think about where you could go to get food in between your school and home. Make a mental list of your options.

2 Why

are we talking about this?

We all have some understanding of foods and drinks that are good for us, and some foods and drinks that are not as good for us.

It’s not as easy as just deciding to only have things that are good for us. For one, we sometimes want to have treats of some sort.

Healthier options can be difficult to get hold of, particularly when out and about. They might be hard to find and can sometimes be more expensive.

Raw ingredients can often be cheaper, but making things freshly takes skill and time.

2 Why are we talking about this?

Your thoughts on this topic will be included in a report by the charity Barnardo's and supermarket Co-op. They will share these with the main political parties later this month.

Let’s get your voices heard on today’s VoteTopic question: “Can you access healthy food choices in your community?”

3 The ingredients of food access

Our feelings and preferences have an impact on what food we want to enjoy. Our situations and where we are will affect the choices we have available to us.

Who is responsible for the access to healthy food? Some people say it’s a person’s freedom to pick and choose what they want. Others suggest that Government and food companies should be responsible for providing healthy and affordable food.

Pair discussion (7-10 mins)

You are now going to see a range of opinions from young people about healthy food, cooking and the price of food. Based on these opinions, discuss with a partner who you think is responsible for being able to access healthy food choices.

The ingredients of food access

If there was one thing I could change about food in my local area it would be making it cheaper. My mum can only give me £5 to get something whilst I'm out and that’s not enough for food.

Growing up now we’re getting used to not having as much fresh food as we used to. Since the Ukraine war, we’re not having fruit and veg in the house because of the cost and it goes off quicker.

We should teach kids better how to cook a proper healthy meal as well. I'm interested in cooking quite a bit but I want to cook more healthy food.

I’d really like a fruit shop, a bigger shop, something that’s a bit more accessible for people to get to. A shop that’s open before and after school so you can get food after school.

I get that some businesses don’t like young people because they can be loud and annoying, but some places don’t care. If they have a problem, we can just sit outside.

4 Recipe for success

In the last section, you gained a wider appreciation for some of the underlying issues that can affect people’s access to healthy food when they are not at school or home. Money is a huge barrier to accessing the healthiest food. Expecting people to spend more money they may not have on food is not a reliable solution. You might see and hear adverts for different foods. These are usually adverts for brands or products that a specific company makes. It’s not as likely you see an advert for kiwis or cucumber...

We can learn lots more about food too. There are lots of foods we do not know much about and do not know what they taste like. We can all get better at preparing fresh food too!

4 Recipe for success

You are about to vote on today’s VoteTopic question: “Can you access healthy food choices in your community?”

Pair discussion (2-3 mins)

If healthy food was cheaper, easier to access and advertised more to you, would you want to eat more of it between school and home?

Now’s your chance to vote on: “Can you access healthy food choices in your community?”

We’ve got some good shops and cafés that have healthy options. It would be nice if they were cheaper though.

There are fresh items for sale in the supermarkets. It’s not as easy as a meal deal though.

There are businesses making great local and international fresh dishes. You just have to know where to go!

At home and at school I can eat pretty healthily, but there is definitely a gap when it comes to getting decent food elsewhere.

A lot of the healthiest options are out of reach for us price-wise. Sometimes they are not available “to go” either.

Cheap fast food is easy to access. And no, I’m not swapping the fries for a salad.
