OODA loop: Observe, Orient, Decide & Act The OODA loop, also known as Boyd’s Cycle, is a decision-making tool, originally developed to help fighter pilots win during air combat even though they may possess incomplete data.

Commonly known as 'the OODA Loop' or 'the Boyd Cycle,' this information-processing framework is often presented as a simple cycle of four states: Observation, Orientation, Decision, and Action.

Behind the OODA loop is the philosophy that reacting more quickly to changing circumstances than your competition puts you at a competitive advantage, and thus you win.

Why are we talking about this?

It’s unlikely a collaboration between Chicken Cottage and The Children’s Society was on your 2025 bingo card…

But the fast-food restaurant chain and children’s charity have teamed up to create more youth spaces.

Chicken Cottage locations will be “safe spaces” to eat, socialise and relax. Staff will also be trained to spot the signs of child exploitation.

Child exploitation: When someone manipulates, deceives, coerces or controls an under-18 to carry out criminal activity.

And this is not the only positive story making the headlines; music giant Spotify has teamed up with the charity Youth Music.

15 music venues around will receive support from Spotify and Youth Music to set up a range of creative projects and programmes.

These include a youth-led recording studio in a remote part of the UK, and a band project for young people with disabilities.

Remote: A long way from any major towns or cities.

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news: research from June 2024 shows that more than two thirds of council-run youth centres in England & Wales have closed since 2010.

This has sparked concerns that a generation of young people may be left isolated and unable to access the advice, support and safe spaces they need.

Socialising with others in a community space seems like it has lots of great benefits. I’d give it a go!

Seeing how much of an impact youth spaces had on influential people today has definitely inspired me.

I’d be interested to use a youth space if it were dedicated to one of my interests, like sport or music.

I’d like to say yes, but the reality is that I probably wouldn’t, especially if my friends weren’t up for it.

I’ve managed so far without anything like this in my community. It might feel a bit forced.

Things have moved on now; we don’t need physical spaces to get together and socialise.
