(Yet) another busy week in the Geography Department! Fieldwork in Lumsdale Woods
Wow – where does the time go? Our year 9 students have been conducting an investigation into seasonality in British deciduous woodland; we are very grateful that The Arkwright Society have allowed us to access Lumsdale Woods this year.

The students conducted a preliminary visit in late summer and then another in the autumn, where they were investigating the variety of species of trees and other wildlife. Our winter visit should have occurred during lockdown so instead our amazing students visited their own local woodland to collect their data. This week we have returned for a ‘spring visit’, hoping to see spring flowers in abundance and we were not disappointed.
On this visit, we also took measurements to be able to estimate the amount of carbon stored in the woodland.

Fieldwork in Sheffield
On Thursday we were delighted to be the first visitors to cross the threshold of the Kelham Island Museum as they reopened from their lengthy lockdown. Several of our year 12 students are investigating changes in the social and economic geography of the Kelham Island area of Sheffield, so this seemed like a perfect place to begin.
The rest of the day was spent collecting data for the investigations that students are conducting in and around the city centre. They are quite the experts on Sheffield now! We wish them the very best of luck as they write up their investigations.
Finally, our year 10 students will be in Sheffield next week. They will be investigating whether Sheffield is a ‘global city’ and whether they can discern Sheffield’s unique characteristics. I suggest that they keep their eyes peeled for water and steel!
