• Grown to new cities: Alexandria (2006), Baltimore (2009), Richmond (2011), and Pittsburgh (2012) • Engaged thousands of volunteer mentors and donors • Launched a ground-breaking study to test the effectiveness of our program – we’re one of only 2% of nonprofits to do such a study, and of those, one of only 10% with positive impact

Ten years ago, I joined the Higher Achievement staff team, inspired by my five years as a mentor. I clearly remember my first day. I entered Gonzaga College High School, welcomed enthusiastically by the Higher Achievement team. My “office” was the corner of a borrowed conference table and when Gonzaga staff needed to meet, I moved to the stairwell. To call and introduce myself to funders in Virginia, I needed to call “long-distance” by unplugging the fax machine and plugging a corded phone into the copy machine.

Those early days still make me smile because of the solidarity and commitment of our team – and our big dreams for our organization and our scholars. Those big dreams of the 2005 team were built on the shoulders of giants – especially Greg Gannon, the Gonzaga teacher whose inspiring vision founded Higher Achievement in 1975.

Forty years later, Higher Achievement has grown and learned many lessons along the way.

And even more exciting times are ahead! With support from the Department of Education’s Investing in Innovation (i3) grant and our many, many champions, we will: • Add nine new Achievement Centers across our four cities by 2019

• Refine our curricula and training, continually grounded in social justice • Help raise the bar for all expanded learning programs in the country When I think about the impact of our program, I think about a scholar I mentored named Ariel. He said, “Higher Achievement has cared for me since I was 8 years old. They have helped me academically, spiritually, and emotionally.” Higher Achievement’s life-changing impact on Ariel, including acceptance into one of the city’s most prestigious high schools, inspired me to leave my comfortable job as a foundation program officer to help grow our organization to serve more scholars just like him. Like many other staff, mentors, and supporters who remain committed to our scholars and alumni, Ariel and I remain close – I am even proud to be godmother to his beautiful daughter!

While our teams may have grown over the past forty years - and we may currently sit at desks instead of stairwells - the commitment that I see every day has not wavered. For everyone featured in the following pages who hascommitted to Higher Achievement, I am grateful.

For the first time ever, we brought together over 1,100 middle school scholars from all four of our cities at the University of Maryland for our annual Olympics of the Mind on July 31, 2015. This year’s Olympics would not have been possible without the support of board member Sameer Bhargava and the Carlyle Group who contributed $25,000 and over 40 volunteers. We are incredibly grateful for their support.

In honor of our anniversary, we’ve selected 40 exceptional alumni, mentors, donors, staff members, and board members to profile as part of our 40 Stories Project. These scholars and supporters range from famous comedians to successful accountants to award-winning poets to respected lawyers – and everywhere in between. 40TH ANNIVERSARY 4 CELEBRATIONS On April 21, 2015, Higher Achievement partnered with Citizen Schools to co host the “Meet in the Middle: A Summit on Expanded Learning” in Washington, DC. The Summit gathered together 280 voices to learn more about the importance of expanded learning in the middle school years. Co-sponsors included practitioners (such as National Center on Time and Learning, TASC, Spark, National Summer Learning Association, High Jump, Million Women Mentors, US 2020, and America Forward), foundation partners (The Ford Foundation), and the corporate sector (Fidelity Investments). Notable speakers included: Rep. Mike Honda from California, DC’s Mayor Muriel Bowser, Wendy Spencer (CEO of the Corporation for National & Community Service) and Former Secretary of the Treasury Larry Summers.

The annual Going Places Gala will celebrate 40 years of dedication and commitment by Higher Achievement scholars, staff, and champions on November 4, 2015. The evening will feature a performance by Higher Achievement scholars and alumni inside the Warner Theatre, followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner. Current scholars and alumni will join guests during the reception to speak about their personal experiences in the program.
