Accommodation

Welcome to the 12th High Country Sale

We’re pleased to welcome you to our 12th annual on-property sale. Following a strong season with abundant feed and water across much of the country, now is the perfect time to restock both bulls and replacement females. Market conditions - particularly tightening supply and strengthening international demand - are placing upward pressure on prices, prompting improved returns from processors and renewed confidence across the beef industry.

At High Country, we remain committed to working alongside commercial producers by offering structurally sound, performance-focused sires and females that breed on. We back our cattle with one of the strongest guarantees in the industry - a commitment made possible through rigorous genetic and physical selection criteria. We genuinely believe prices for quality cattle will continue to rise throughout the year. As one of the earlier sales on the calendar, our offering gives buyers the opportunity to secure top-end genetics before competition intensifies. The quality and specification found in this year’s draft would typically cost significantly more if purchased later in the season.

Our program is underpinned by elite bloodlines from industry leaders such as Glenlands, Billabong and Rondel, with a continued emphasis on beef quality, maternal strength, fertility, semen quality, and longevity. These foundations have shaped a herd with a clear and consistent High Country stamp - cattle with thickness, length, and style, suited to both stud and commercial operations.

We’re proud of the lineup presented this year and confident that whether you’re chasing beef, type, or strong maternal traits, you’ll find value and quality in this draft.

Looking Ahead - Genetics & Reproductive Opportunities

As we look to the future, High Country is expanding its focus to include genetic package sales, including access to elite embryos, semen, and custom mating opportunities from our leading donor females. We are also investing in IVF facilities and plan to offer a range of recipient-based programs, giving clients the chance to access high-end genetics without the cost and management of donor programs.

These new offerings are designed to make top-tier genetics more accessible and to support breeders looking to fast-track herd development through proven lines. We look forward to working with both existing and new clients to deliver reproductive solutions that are flexible, commercially relevant and performance-driven.

Thank you to our incredible team, sponsors, agents, friends and family for your ongoing support as we celebrate over a decade of building a program that delivers for our clients. We wish you the very best of luck with your purchases and look forward to working with you throughout the year.

Warm regards,

The High Country Team

Although they’ve now returned home to England, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the incredible impact this young couple has had on our team. Over the past two years, they became more than just staff — they became part of the family. Whether it was in the yards, on horseback, behind the wheel or simply pitching in wherever needed, their work ethic, attitude and care never wavered. We were lucky enough to have them join us from January to September 2024, and again from March to August 2025. Their presence lifted the team, and their contribution behind the scenes of this sale and so many other milestones cannot be overstated. We’ll miss them dearly, but know they’ll go far in whatever they choose to do. Thank you both — you’ll always have a place here, and we hope to see you back again soon.

Testimonials

At Ashvale Station, we run approximately 1500 breeders. We have purchased High Country bulls annually since 2015 both at auction and in the paddock. These bulls, prepared on a silage based preparation, have never missed a beat. They had high conception rates, especially in the first 28 days of joining and were bloody good workers. Calving ease has also been impressive. We have never specifically picked “heifer bulls”, but all of the bulls have produced small calves.Temperament is another massive benefit to our operation. It is unreal! Not only are the bulls awesome, but the calves are second to none.

I am greatly looking forward to having a Droughtmaster breeder herd greatly influenced by the High Country bloodlines. Their doing ability, high

Grey Gum Droughtmaster Stud in the Scenic Rim have two Stud sires and 10 females from the High Country Stud. Genesis, one of the first offered sons of Glen Fosslyn Idol and Hadley, a Glenlands Quarry son. The bulls have genuine sire appeal, above average EBV’s, come from fertile bloodlines, are imposing figures and yet, are easy to work with. Both bulls have performed, achieving a +97% calving rate in the their single sire herds each year. 85% of their calves came in the first 6 weeks of the calving period this past season. No calving difficulty has ever been recorded in our program. The females haven’t missed a calf, are good mothers with plenty of milk and have continually been at the front end of calving windows. We are very happy with the addition of High Country Genetics to our herd.

We have purchased a number of joined and unjoined High Country females and have been thrilled with their performance. They are extremely quiet, easy to handle and an absolute joy to have in the paddock. Highly fertile, they calve easily, milk well, and have each produced quality calves, the most notable of which is Nindethana Henrietta who has been a successful member of our show team during the 2016 and 2017 show season, winning multiple broad ribbons including Junior Champion heifer at 2016 Royal Queensland Show. We have also been extremely happy with how easy the High Country team is to deal with and the wonderful after sales service.

fertility and impeccable temperament make them a pleasure to work with. High Country breed real cattle for the real world, surpassing our expectations, doing as they claim in a working environment and not just the showring.

Test Interpretation

Horn/Poll

The Horn/Poll test utilises new SNP technology to provide accurate data on the genotype of the animal (not just the phenotype or how it appears). It provides information about whether the animal carries two copies of the Poll gene (PP - homozygous), or one copy of the gene (PH - heterozygous). Poll/horn status of calves depends on what these bulls are mated to. Homozygous (PP) animals will never produce a horned calf. Heterozygous (PH) bulls will never produce a horned calf if mated to homozygous polled females. If a PH bull is mated to genetically scurred PH females, 75% of the calves will not have horns. If a PH bull is mated to horned HH cows, 50% of the calves will not have horns. Indeterminate (I) means the presence of a polled variant cannot be definitively determined or results are not consistent with an animal possessing a known polled genotype. NB: A rare occurrence in Bos Indicus cattle is the so called “African horn gene” where rarely a calf born to cows carrying this gene can have horns regardless of the poll variants of the bull.

Pestivirus PI

This test determines whether an animal is ‘persistently infected’ (PI) with Pestivirus. Affected whilst still in the uterus, PI animals never mount an immune response against the virus, accepting it into their body before their immune system has become effective. These animals shed virus throughout their life the same as they would shed skin or hair cells and are directly responsible for spreading Pestivirus through a herd, causing abortions, stillbirths and low pregnancy rates. All of our animals have been tested PI negative. Morphology

Semen quality has a massive impact on pregnancy rates within a herd and affects profitability as fertility is a key performance indicator. Semen motility or a ‘crush side’ test only provides half the story as it merely indicates the percentage of progressively motile (or normally swimming) cells. Morphology is the assessment of a sample of 100 sperm cells which looks for further faults within the seemingly normal cells. These microscopic changes can include faults that allow affected cells to enter the ovum (egg), prevent other cells entering, only to either not produce a pregnancy or to produce an embryo that is not viable. Bulls can pass sperm motility ‘crush side’ tests, but still be infertile if their morphology % is low. Morphology therefore is a much more detailed assessment of sperm cells and provides a far better idea of the fertility of a bull.

Sire Tracing

Sire Tracing parentage testing compares DNA markers from the sires with DNA markers from the calves to verify the parentage. All lots have been sire verified except those listed as being sired by Droughtmaster Bull or any lots listed otherwise. Bulls sired by Coes Creek Cheiftain have not been sire traced. He was sold commercially prior to DNA being recorded. These calves have been tested against every other sire in our battery and were not matched to any other sire. *See Page 5 for Important Disclaimer on Lots 56-76* Pompes disease

An inherited genetic disorder that involves a deficiency of an essential enzyme which in turn causes glycogen to build up in muscle and nerve cells, affecting function and ultimately causing death in the animal. A recessive disorder, it involves a mutation of the E7 gene and requires an affected gene to be passed down from both the sire and the dam. Animals with two copies of the gene have the disorder and succumb to the disease and die within the first 12 months of life. Our genetic testing picks up animals that are ‘carriers’ of the disease and carry one defective gene. They show no signs, but can pass this on to their offspring. This disease is found in Brahmans, Shorthorns and all derivatives of these breeds. Our sale lots have tested negative as either carriers or affected by this rare disease.

Co-operative breeder herds

High Country Droughtmasters and the growth of both the stud and sale is a passion for our family. This love of what we do has led us to meet some wonderful like minded fellow breeders over the last few years, which we are very grateful to be able to call friends. We are very proud to have forged long-term relationships with these wonderful people, allowing us to share genetics for the betterment of both our herds whilst enjoying breeding and producing ever improving cattle. These are our co-operative breeders…

Wade and Anita Batty

Saddleback Pastoral

In early 2022, our friends and previous co-operative breeders Ivan and Carol Hayes of Coes Creek made the decision to retire and sell the farm and beautiful cows. We were lucky enough for the property and herd to be purchased by the Wade and Anita Batty and family at Saddleback Pastoral. They are currently running 150 head of Droughtmaster Breeders at Wilson’s Pocket alongside their eldest son William who manages the property and stud operation for the family. Saddleback has continued with our co-operative arrangement and the utilisation of all their joining sires originating from our sire battery. We are excited for the future and the development of Saddleback pastoral and our cooperative arrangement.

John and Deb Walton Biarra Glen Droughtmasters

Running a very successful and extremely diverse set of agricultural units, John and Deb are neighbours of ours, who we originally met through admiring their beautiful herd of Droughtmaster breeders. Based originally on Happy Valley bloodlines, the herd comprises purebred, moderately framed, fertile, smooth coated and feminine females, now registered as a stud operation. John and Deb have utilised Oasis Wallace with this herd. We thank John and Deb for this opportunity to utilise their herd, thereby allowing us to offer even more bulls by this range of sires.
