St. Robert School celebrates its 100th anniversary this school year and we are excited to bring a fun evening your way and are grateful to have been entrusted to help organize this important event as we celebrate this milestone. For the past 100 years, St. Robert School has given generations of children the best education and Life Smart skills for the future. Your support of The Auction of the Century will ensure that St. Robert School is positioned to do so for 100 more. As the single largest fundraiser for St. Robert School, the Emerald Auction raises money essential to the school’s daily operation. Last year, the Emerald Auction raised a record $159,000. We believe that with the support of our school and parish families and friends, we can break that record this year. A few event highlights to remember as you make your plans for The Party of the Century… • The silent auction will open online prior to the event – you can start to eye up items of interest and begin your bidding before arriving via your mobile device. • Buy your raffle ticket for The Trip of the Century either before or at the auction. For just $100, you could be the lucky winner of a trip for two to Ireland valued at $4,000. Auction Rules Silent auction bidding will be opened three days before the event at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9. To get the Greater Giving Mobile Bidding interface on your phone, you will receive a text to the phone number you registered on Greater Giving when you paid for your Emerald Auction tickets online. All items will be available to bid on except for Voice Auction items, Sign-Up Parties and Class Acts. Bidders will be able to take advantage of “Buy it Now” prices when bidding opens on Wednesday. Greater Giving Mobile Bidding will allow you to track your bids, place maximum bids, view items that have not been bid on and alert you when you have been outbid on an item. Please be sure to fully charge your personal device before arriving at the auction. We cannot guarantee there will be charging stations available if needed. There will be a limited number of personal bidding devices to borrow, available at Check-in, as well as a central bidding station with someone able to place bids on your behalf in limited circumstances. There will be "Bid Buddies" roaming the event to help you place bids. There also will be video screens in both ballrooms that will show bidding statuses. After bidding closes on Saturday, March 12, checkout will begin at 10:00 p.m. in the Festa Ballroom. All purchased items must be paid for and removed from the premises by the end of the evening unless other arrangements are made with the Auction committee. All sales are final. In order to bid on items at the Emerald Auction, auction goers will be required to give a credit card (MasterCard, VISA, American Express or Discover) or a signed check made out to St. Robert Home & School Association. If upon checkout one should choose to pay in cash, the check will be shredded and any credit card provided will not be charged. Successful bidders shall pay in full the evening of the Emerald Auction. Items may be removed only after obtaining a paid receipt from Checkout. Items may be removed if you have either made arrangements to pre-pay or you have checked out and received your final statement. St. Robert School, the Home & School Association and its Emerald Auction Committee warrant neither the quality nor the value of items presented. All items are sold “as is.” Dollar values are estimates often determined by the donor, and are not guaranteed by the Emerald Auction Committee for tax purposes or market value. All auctioned items expire on March 12, 2017, unless otherwise stated.

SILENT AUCTION 1. The Silent Auction will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9 via Greater Giving Mobile Bidding from your mobile bidding device. To get the bidding interface, you will receive a text to the mobile phone number you registered on Greater Giving when you paid for your Emerald Auction Tickets online. 2. All items will be sold to the highest bidder who meets or surpasses any minimum bid noted on Greater Giving Mobile Bidding and properly meets or exceeds the stated minimum raise level. 3. All Silent Auction items are arranged by categories for personal inspection. Each item has a description of its value. Make your bid by utilizing Greater Giving Mobile Bidding and follow the prompt steps to enter your bid. Confirm that your bid has been accepted. 4. Each increase must equal or exceed the minimum raise stated on the bidding device. 5. The closing bid highlighted by Greater Giving Mobile Bidding at the end of the Silent Auction will constitute a winning bid. In case of a dispute at the time of closing, bidders will be given an opportunity to submit a final written bid to the Auction Committee, with the highest bidder being declared the winner. 6. All bidders on items with alcoholic beverages must be 21 years old to be eligible.

VOICE AUCTION 1. The Voice Auction will be held in the Pompeii Grand Ballroom at the Italian Conference Center during dinner. 2. Each successful bidder will sign an acknowledgement form indicating the winning bid amount to confirm sale. 3. The Auction Committee reserves the right to repeat the sale of any disputed item.

How to use Mobile Bidding Get started! On Wednesday, March 9 at 8:00 a.m., you will receive a text message to the phone you registered on Greater Giving, with a link. Tap the link—it will open your browser and take you directly to the bidder interface. Tap the “Yes” button to verify your name.

How do I find items? From the home screen, you can enter a package number or search phrase in the box and jump right to that package. You can also scroll through a list of packages by category - just choose “Browse by Category.”

How do I bid? You can bid from anywhere, anytime! Find the item you are interested in, select your bid from the drop down menu and click “Place Bid.” You can bid the next increment by clicking on the “Quick Bid” button and you can “Watch” packages as well. To find out what packages have no bids, tap the “No Bids Packages” button.

Where are the items I bid on? Tap the "My Bids" button to see what you have bid on.

How do I make a donation? Press the “Donate” button on your home screen and choose a pre-set amount or enter the amount you wish to donate, then select Submit.

Can mobile bidding automatically bid for me? Yes, just set a Max Bid. Upon doing so, Mobile Bidding will automatically bid on your behalf, by increment, whenever you are outbid, up to your Max Bid amount.

Was I outbid? If you are outbid, you will receive an alert on the upper right of your screen as well as a text message. To see details, press the My Bids button.

A signed check made payable to St. Robert Emerald Auction can also be provided. Bidding will be opened three days before the event at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 9. You may receive separate receipts for Silent Auction items, Live Auction items and for donations to any special campaigns. Please keep all receipts and certificates provided at checkout, as they will be your record of items purchased and the only means provided for you to contact a donor for services purchased. St. Robert School — 1915 to present By Margaret Mathews Sankovitz ‘47

t. Robert School is 100 years old! The 100th anniversary of the first day of school was September 15, 2015!

When the parish was founded and incorporated in 1912, the parishioners hope was to have a school. The first permanent building was built and opened as a church in the fall of 1913 with the intention of opening a school on the second floor of the building.

spring of 1955 in anticipation of the four year Dominican High School opening in Whitefish Bay. By the middle 1950’s the school population had grown so that every classroom was crowded, with 45-50 students per class and some space in the basement being used for classrooms. The parish undertook an ambitious fund-raising effort in the fall of 1957 and by the fall of 1958 the north addition to the school was ready for use. It provided for classrooms on the second floor and a gymnasium and stage on the ground level. The former gym was transformed into a multipurpose room and lunch room, a kitchen was built, and the former parish hall that also had a kitchen and small stage was reconfigured into smaller rooms for music, art, nurse’s office, etc.

In 1915, Fr. Farrel Patrick Reilly, founding pastor, invited the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa to staff the school and on September 15, 1915, Sr. Aloysius Reilly (no relation to Fr. Reilly) opened the doors to 43 children who were students in grades one through four. Sr. Aloysius was principal and grade teacher. She was assisted by Sr. Lucillus Howard. Each year a grade was added and in 1920 St. Robert School graduated its first eighth grade class. The school population grew rapidly and soon more space was needed for the burgeoning school enrollment. In 1927 an addition was built that added two floors of classrooms and provided for a gymnasium in the basement (now Reilly Hall) and a small library at the north end of the second floor (now the reading nook in the Media Center). By 1928 each of the eight grades had two classes. In the ensuing years, space in the convent building was used for classrooms and in 1929 a small wooden building - The Annex - was erected on what is now the playground/parking lot north of the parish offices and rectory to accommodate some of the intermediate grades classes. That building was razed in the summer of 1939 after the present church was built and the former church space on the first floor of the school was available for classrooms. In 1939 a ninth grade was begun. Students from the surrounding area came to St. Robert for ninth grade before continuing to High School (primarily Messmer - then a three year high school.) The last ninth grade class graduated in the

In 1983, junior and senior kindergarten classes were established with one teacher teaching both levels in a first floor area formed by combining two classrooms.

Today, St. Robert School has the same physical footprint as it did in 1958 but the interior, although appearing the same, has been transformed into a 21st century school. There are world languages in the curriculum; there is an amazing media center; there are white boards (although the old blackboards and erasers are still available). Each grade level studies science; involvement in music education and art is required for each grade level. One of the most obvious changes in the school is the absence of the white-habited Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. The Sisters were the only religious order that taught in St. Robert School. The last Dominican at St. Robert was Sr. Dorothy Victor, O.P., who retired in 2002. During those years - 1915-2002 - over 250 sisters were assigned to St. Robert School. Eleven sisters served as principal, the last being Sr. Helen Martin (1976-87). Since 1987, five lay persons have held the office of principal, presently occupied by Lauren Beckmann. Assisting the

principals, both religious and lay, have been hundreds of lay teachers, female and male, who have not only maintained the integrity of St. Robert School but have enhanced and enriched its fine reputation in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Athletics have always been an important part of the educational experience at St. Robert School. Until 1978, organized, league football was part of the extracurricular program. Many great teams were fielded over the years - many of them champions. In 1978, because of declining enrollment and increasing costs, football was dropped. Basketball has always been big at St. Robert. Initially both basketball and football were boys only sports - and only in the upper grades. For many years now, basketball has been offered to both boys and girls beginning in the middle grades. In 1972 girls interscholastic sports came to St. Robert

in the form of volleyball for girls in the middle school grades. Since that time volleyball is offered to both boys and girls. Track was reinstituted a few years ago for boys and girls. Early on in the history of the school, track was part of the athletic program, as was boxing. St. Robert Parish celebrated its Centennial during 2012. St. Robert School is celebrating its Centennial during the 201516 school year. Parishioners can take pride in the long history of the superlative Catholic education that has been fostered by the Parish. St. Robert School is an asset to the Shorewood and Milwaukee communities and has produced thousands of alumni who have reflected brightly on St. Robert School and parish as they participate as productive, moral and ethical citizens.

The Painting of the Century by Peter Kudlata Own the “Painting of the Century” by renowned local artist Peter Kudlata. In the several years that he has been painting, Kudlata has completed well over 100 works of art, influenced by Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and other abstract masters. “My art is a visual language of emotional expression,” Peter says. “My images don’t conform. 104 An Evening with Frank Almond Milwaukee Symphony concertmaster and violinist Frank Almond will play a private concert for 60 people at Katie and Mike Weber’s gracious home on the shores of Lake Michigan on Thursday, July 21, 2016. Sharing the spotlight with Frank will be the violin he is honored to play, the “ex-Lipin´ski,” a famed Stradivarius violin crafted in 1715. Fewer than 500 violins made by famed Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari survive today, and fewer still date, as the Lipin´ski does, from the luthier’s “golden period” between 1700 and 1720. Almond holds the Charles and Marie Caestecker Concertmaster Chair at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He returned to the MSO after holding positions as Concertmaster of the Rotterdam Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, and Guest Concertmaster of the London Philharmonic under Kurt Masur. He continues an active schedule of solo and chamber music performances in the US and abroad, has been a member of the chamber group An die Musik in New York City since 1997, and also founded and directs the Frankly Music Chamber Series based in Milwaukee. At 17, he was one of the youngest prizewinners in the history of the Nicòlo Paganini Competition in Genoa, Italy, and five years later was one of two American prizewinners at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. In addition to his work with An die Musik, Mr. Almond’s work as a chamber musician has generated collaborations over the years with many of today’s well-known institutions, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Hal Leonard Corporation, the Ravinia Festival, La Jolla Summerfest, Music in the Vineyards, and numerous other festivals. He has recorded for Summit, Albany, Boolean (his own label), Innova, Newport Classic, Wergo and New Albion and AVIE. In April 2013 AVIE released A Violin’s Life, featuring works and composers directly associated with the Lipin´ski Stradivarius, charting in the Billboard Top 10 in its first week of release. He holds two degrees from the Juilliard School, where he studied with Dorothy DeLay. He has held several academic positions and is currently on the faculty at Roosevelt University, and continues to write the popular blog nondivisi. THE 2016 EMERALD AUCTION

Student Art Project “When we dream alone it is only a dream, but when many dream together it is the beginning of a new realty.”

This year St. Robert students were introduced to the creativity, art, architecture and ecology of Austrian artist Freidensreich Hundertwasser. He is best known for his brightly colored, highly patterned whimsical landscapes, his humane and ecological architecture and his heartfelt causes creating and caring for natural and man-made environments. “You are a guest of nature - behave.” F. H. It was from these Hundertwasser quotes as well as his “We are in need of magic” that the Class Acts project took its cue. Each student in grades Prekindergarten-8 created a small piece of art that represents a part of a community. Houses, buildings, trees, water, people and other imagery that would enhance this idea. The 8th grade had the additional task of combining all the varied parts into conceptual, practical and fantastical landscapes. Each of these finished pieces is a wonderful example of how the power of imagination combined with teamwork can blur the lines between levels of ability by combining numerous contrasting and contradicting parts into beautifully cohesive works of art. It is hard to break each completed canvas into “by grade” categories. It is even more difficult to distinguish exactly what components are from which age level because many students chose to overlap and try different themes.

The work of coordinating classes, integrating curriculum and creating all of the parts started months ago. The students truly enjoy their artistic participation and look forward to being an integral part of the Emerald Auction. Each mixed media collage is a combination of watercolors, crayon resist, pencil drawings, oil pastels, paper collage, marker zen-tangles, tempera paint and acrylics. Many thanks to Ms. Ana Amorin for allowing this activity to take over her lesson plans and art room. Many thanks too, for her time and talent. We hope you enjoy this year’s Fantastical Landscapes!
