Everything you need to know about the “cool kid “ drink of Japanese whisky.

In recent years Japanese whisky has been the rising star of the industry. The region’s product is so widely popular that in order to compete with demand, distillers have had to create ageless versions of their whiskies and has had to cut off the rest of the world from a number of their most popular blends. Today, there isn’t a category of spirit that is more hyped up by hip drinkers than Japanese whisky, but this is a very recent change. Japanese whisky has skyrocketed in worldwide popularity only within the last 4 years or so, before now whisky (and whiskey) drinkers preferred a peaty scotch or a robust caramel-y American bourbon.

In Jim Murray’s 2015 World Whisky Bible, the Yamazaki Single Malt Sherry Cask 2013 took the title of World’s Best Whisky. This is arguably when the world’s whisky drinkers became aware of the region’s incredibly high quality spirit. Japanese whiskies are revered to be silky-smooth and gentler than the rest of the world’s. The classic production process of Japanese whisky is largely similar to that of scotch, meaning a mash of malted barley is distilled and barrelaged for three years minimum. What makes Japan’s spirit superior is the fact that Japanese distillers do all of their blending in house and have total control of the process. This allows for a much wider range of styles in Japanese whisky rather than a single signature, which is common in the rest of the world. The art of blending whiskies has been compared by Mike Miyamoto, Suntory Whisky’s global brand ambassador, as the creation of a musical masterpiece the blender is the composer and the whiskies they work with are the orchestra. The result is soft, floral and fragrant.

There are many ways to drink whisky, however, to taste these Japanese whiskies properly, one must sip them the Japanese way. The Japanese have created a handful of sipping styles to accompany their spirit. Commonly, lowerend whisky is ordered with soda water and higher-end whisky is ordered with a splash of soft, mineral water. There are also names that accompany these perfected sipping styles. Ordering a whisky “twice up” will result in a combination of equal parts whisky and mineral water. While ordering a whisky “mizuwari”, meaning “mixed with water”, means two parts water to one part whisky over ice. Finally, the most popular way to order a whisky and to sound like the coolest kid in the bar, is to order a Highball, two parts sparkling mineral water to one part whisky. Yes, it is essentially a sparkling version of the mizuwari, but it is exponentially cooler. It’s no wonder that Japanese whiskies and sipping styles are taking over the globe.

As of the first quarter of 2019 has come and gone, Japan’s whisky industry is growing ever stronger in reputation while innovating their product lines. The parent company of Japanese craft beer brand Hitachino Nest, known for its adorable owl logo, has been experimenting with its own whisky distilling. Kiuchi Shuzo has announced the release of a Highball can. Boasting a 9% ABV and containing both malt and grain whisky the can retails for 350¥ - roughly $3 USD. Another distillery, Wakatsuru Saburomaru - small but mighty - also announced their release of a Highball can, named “Harry Cranes Craft Highball”. Suntory and Nikka distilleries have both announced the release of a “world blended whisky”, Ao and Kikka The Tailored. The whiskies include blends from the five whisky-making regions of the world.

Big things are happening for the Japanese whisky industry so far this year and it seems their time in the spotlight has no end in sight. The world has discovered the wonder of Japanese distilling and blending and they are not going to let go any time soon. There is a theory that liquors and spirits change in popularity much like fashion trends, although at much slower a pace. However, the prominence of Japan’s distilleries at this time will not end anytime soon if they continue to produce the high quality, artfully blended spirits that have the globe so enamoured.

Akashi 5 Year Sherry Cask Eigashima Shuzo Distillery $150 At Eigashima Shuzo Distillery, only five employees handle all of the whisky production, making this whisky a beautiful representation of Japanese whisky. The Akashi 5 Year Sherry Cask offers bursts of dried fruit and raisin, some sweetness with the silky mouthfeel of a classic Japanese whisky.

Ichiro’s Malt Port Pipe Chichibu Distillery $500 Ichiro’s Malt Port Pipe whisky from Chichibu Distillery is the most unique pink color. The first aromas are fruity, specifically strawberry and cherry, with hints of honey and grain as well. The palate of this whisky is very heavily alcoholic, normal of a cask strength whisky, with flavors of citrus. The long finish leaves the drinker with citrus, grapefruit, wood and honey.

Kurayoshi 18 Year Pure Malt Matsui Whisky $225 Matsui Whisky’s Kurayoshi 18 Year Pure Malt whisky paires the soft, refreshing and savoriness of malt perfectly with the acidity, bitterness and sweetness from the raisin, nut and vanilla flavors. The end result is a complex, yet classic, whisky that offers the drinker is flavors and notes with a creamy, smoky finish.

Hakushu Single Malt 12 Year Suntory $100 Suntory Whisky’s Hakushu Single Malt 12 Year Whisky is pure champagne in color. The nose of the Hakushu combines basil, pine needle, and green apple. The palate of the whisky gives sweet pear, mint, and kiwi notes. Finally the finish leaves green tea and subtle smoke notes behind for the drinker.

Yamazaki Single Malt 12 Year Suntory Whisky $115 Possibly the most iconic Japanese whisky out there, Suntory Whisky’s Yamazaki Single Malt 12 Year Whisky is pure gold in color. The nose of the Yamazaki combines peach, pineapple, grapefruit, clove, candied orange, vanilla and Mizunara - Japanese Oak. The palate of the whisky gives coconut, cranberry, and butter notes. Finally the long finish leaves sweet ginger and cinnamon notes behind for the drinker.

ACW x NIKE Samuel Ross is the designer behind streetwear brand A-Cold-Wall. ACW explores working class uniforms with Savile Row tailoring and the presentation of conceptual ideas that are easy to understand or grasp. What is especially unique about this brand is the way Ross uses materials - PVC, latex, nylon, rubber, etc. - throughout the collections of the brand, which he feels to be the DNA of his label. He is now in the works of finding sustainable ways to continue his work with these synthetic fabrics and we are particularly excited to see what the future holds for ACW.

alt Fu is a current SCAD student who not only shares his passion in the artistic world, but also in the automotive world. Both him and his roommate operate a workshop where he helps friends and other people fix their cars. Walt is also an advertising major in school. His main inspiration comes from vintage aesthetics and it really reflects in his artworks. His current treasure is his BMW 3 series that is from the last century.

Even his personality and fashion sense makes him look like a character from the 80’s that travelled to the future. With this interview, we were able to explore his lifestyle and interests in motor vehicles.

Let’s kick into our topics. Who/What raised your interest into motor vehicles for the first time?

“When I got to the United States from Hong Kong, I wanted to live the most American life I can live. So I was looking at...I almost got them until I talked to my parents about it and they denied it. Then I got on the BMW website and saw this bike.

Damn. The design of the engine is like a wing hanging on the bike. The engine box really won my heart. Considering the reliability of the vehicle I decided to purchase a brand-new bike in the price of $14,000. I went to the BMW dealership, talked to the advertising guy and test drove the bike. It was great at the beginning, but I fell down from the bike after driving a bit. The bike was so heavy that I can’t even carry it up. This case I had to purchase the bike and it became my first vehicle.One month after, it was summer and I rode my bike, all the way up to South Carolina to visit one of the friends from my Facebook vintage car group. At his place, I saw an owner that owns over 20 Ford Festiva. People always mess this model with the Fiesta. And I also saw the motorcycle that Mazda made. It has a lot of cool features. I met more friends from just biking there. I hung out with them and they taught me all the technical knowledges about bikes and cars. And soon one of the people I met up there became my roommate eventually”.

What is your very first car that you have owned?

“The BMW bike was the first bike. Like I said, I dropped the bike, actually, twice...before I even know how to ride a bike. So, the dealership asked me to sign up for an academy to learn how to ride a motorbike. And I spent 3 days to get my license. And yeah, with that 50cc and 1.2 T bike I rode 8 hours up to North Carolina and 8 hours back to Savannah. I only wore a helmet for protection. And I didn’t know I was not supposed to cross left until the left side lane is clear. So, I was lucky that I didn’t die”.

How many vehicles have you owned so far?

“I crashed my BMW Bike eventually. So that was one loss. Other than that, I bought a used car for 370 dollars and spent 3 months to fix it. My friend, which also is my roommate, volunteered to help because he knows a lot about motor vehicles, and most of the time he drives the car. But then one day he ran the car into the stop sign and crashed the car. I didn’t fix the car and now the car is lying at my backyard. After that I bought a 1972 Honda motorcycle, and fixing the bike by meeting up with those people who sell bikes online. However, heh, I crashed the bike again. I think it’s my third right? Then after that I went all the way up to North Carolina for an E30, a 1982 BMW 3 Series. I didn’t even check anything before I purchased it because the guy is also a car collector, so I trusted him”.

Tell us more about your favorite vehicle?

“E30, gotta be. If I have more money my next vehicle will still be an E30.

If not then maybe the Tesla, I think”.

If you had 100,000 dollars, what vintage would you want to buy and why?

“Definitely not anything super expensive.

I will probably get anE30 hardtop, and E30 Truck, and also an E30 Touring. All the E30s.

Oh, maybe I will Get the Prius.

Yea and of course the Tesla”.

What is the craziest car collector that you have seen like?

“When I was travelling to North Carolina and South Carolina. This European guy owns a lot of the Ferraris. The brother of the owner owns over 40 BMWs. Just the BMWs. And then in the care forum, this guy, he owns over 20 Ford Festivas, I mean the same style. 20 same vehicles. It is actually such a cheap and shitty car and it’s not even worth buying. He stacks all the Festivas on each other at the yard”.

Which model would you recommend to our reader as a cool, handy and reliable daily drive?

Toyota it is, because you will never have to fix it much. The German cars are so costy when it comes to fixing and shit. Even tho they have a lot of cool cars. Also the old, vintage Japanese cars are very cool. Oh the New Prius is so cool. Also like the New generation of BMW is a good choice.

But for me I will stick with the old E30. Because the new BMWs are hard to fix and I am too lazy to fix. Good thing about the E30 is that it is easy to fix. You can easily swap engine with other e30s. Unlike the new BMWs you really need mechanics to take things apart. It is hard to maintain.

Overall, Christian Dada’s clothing is surrealistic and nostalgic. His retail line does not disappoint- try styling his monochromatic, poignant pieces with industrial jewelry and tinted sunglasses. Launched in 2010, Parisianinfluenced Japanese designer Masanori “Zoo” Morikawa designs fashion that is “touched by adolescence.” This reimagined streetwear is moody, contemporary, and cryptic. The death of Morikawa’s wife, Yoko, has influenced his collections over the past two years. In his words, they are “sentimental.” Spring 2019’s collection captures the moments of motion and idleness that come when one is suffering loss. Prints includes withered flowers, dead lizards, and the atmospheric sky. The Christian Dada Fall 2019 collection finds itself somewhere between artfulness and irreverence. Black leather, quilting, and knits are predominant, with splashes of electric green and lilac to make a statement. Prints are replaced with colorblocked knits resembling television screen glitches.

The hottest new collaboration is between Dior and Hajime Sorayama.

Hajime Sorayama is a Japanese illustrator known for his erotic portrayal of feminine, biomechanized robots. His style is “superrealistic,” combining talents from fine art, illustration, and industrial design.

Check out Sorayama’s art book “Sexy Robot,” which was published with Penthouse and Playboy. This book earned him a cult follow ing, and his popularity will grow even larger with the collab.

DREW GOCKE A look into the apocalypse

ere at Sense, we love when a designer comes along who knows how to mix the conceptual and the functional.

Drew Gocke is a fashion designer who recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She now works for Ralph Lauren as an Assistant Performance Outerwear Designer. We got the chance to talk with Drew about her impressive senior collection for SCAD, her new job, and her views on style.

Drew’s senior collection, “Albrecht Durer’s Contemplative World,” was influenced by the Renaissance artist Albrecht Durer. His woodblock prints such as “Adam and Eve” and “Saint Anthony” brought graphic style and incredible detail to the Renaissance art scene. Drew took inspiration from Durer’s interpretation of the apocalypse. Apocalypse stories not only give insight into a culture’s origin, but provide visuals of transformation, death, and eventually renewal. We think “Albrecht Durer’s Contemplative World” fits perfectly in our September theme of “The Ages of Man.” If life is an endless cycle, then so is fashion.

Let’s see what the apocalypse means to Drew, and how she finds inspiration and renewal at work.

Where do you find inspiration?

“Albrecht Dürer was my biggest influence.

His graphic and incredible woodblock prints revolutionized the world of art and spirituality. I was drawn to the impact of Dürer’s apocalypse prints.”

Would you say streetwear influenced your collection?

“Absolutely. Streetwear even influences me more in my daily work. If you’re going to create something for others to wear, you must know what they want to wear and how they will put it together. It is especially important when designing outerwear.”

Did you feel confident that you could pull your collection off from the beginning, or were there times you felt out of your element? “I felt extremely in over my head during most of the process. It is definitely sink or swim, just like the industry. I had to teach myself menswear construction by taking garments apart and really seeing how the pattern pieces fit together. I am not a flat pattern maker, I had to find another way to visualize the garments. The sketching and process book making was my strong suit. It never seemed like work to me. I would spend hours and hours collaging to build shape to sketch into. The hardest for me was the actual sewing of the garments. True tailoring is something we aren’t taught at SCAD so I had to figure it out by trial and error. My professors guidance was invaluable to me�.

What was the most memorable part of seeing your collection come to life? (Ex. Were you in the studio, doing a shoot, or watching the fashion show?) “My favorite part of the process was spending hours in the print studio at the fibers building. I would assist my collaborators in screen printing my garments. Seeing the textiles come to life was the most exciting for me.�

“You have to learn many things you never were taught in school. Costing, production, Trim development are all things that are vital to understand in the business. .”

What do you enjoy most about your job?

“I love working in such a niche product category. Performance outerwear includes some of the most challenging construction which makes the design process so much more fulfilling to see a garment that includes both aesthetic and function.”

Do you like working in New York City? Does it give you inspiration as a designer?

“I think the world is changing so rapidly that many people get to work from all over. It allows to experience other places and constantly be inspired.

New York is great, the pace can be a tough but very rewarding.”

Would you like to have a brand of your own some day?

“Not really. I would rather work my way up to become a senior member of a design team.

Starting your own company is quite naive until you really understand the process of a business.”

Has the way you perceive yourself as an artist changed since graduating?

“Absolutely. I Feel like I have learned so much in 9 months that has really made me grow both intellectually and creatively.”

What advice would you give to young students who have an interest in fashion design? “ It isn’t just sketching croquis figures and pretty dresses.

It is a business in which you much perfect your craft to be competitive in the industry. Sketching is all digital and technical flats on illustrator. The design process is extremely thorough and technical. Every detail counts.”

obue Chen is a 2018 SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) alumna, graduated with a B.F.A in fashion design and a minor in fashion marketing and merchandising.

Her senior collection at the universiry was definitely one that caught all our attentions - it represents the Yakuza, or the Japanese mafia that is traditionally seen as a negative. As a native Japanese, I thought that it was a bold, yet an amazing way to shine a more positive light on the Yakuza, and to take their image and turn it into creativity. It was an honor to interview her, and let’s discover some of her insight on her collection, and what ultimately inspired her.

When and how did you decide to go into fashion design?

“As far back as I can remember, creating outfits was one of my favorite activity. When I was 5, I remember forcing my mother to take me to the free class at the craft store that were teaching children how to fabricate clothes for the ‘りかちゃん’(rika-chan) dolls. I never took an official sewing class until they offered it as an activity class in my middle school. When the semester ended, I was the only student who fully finished a full look. Later, as part of my IB (International Baccalaureate) Art HL collection I combined my painted art with the outfits that I was making. It wasn’t until the middle of my IB Diploma that I was told by one of SCAD’s professor that there was a possibility of making a career out of it.”

Where do you find inspiration?

“Ever since I could remember, events in my life had a way of being entangled in my art. From the simple silhouettes of the asian skylines to the 3/11 Tohoku Earthquakes and Tsunami, Fashion had been my outlet.

Whether it is man made or natural, I enjoy sharing my experiences with the world we all share”.

Since your mother attended world renowned Bunka Fashion school in Tokyo, would you say that her career path had an influence on you?

“My mom is definitely the soul reason I am who I am today. She taught me the art of construction on a human body. I honestly had no idea she went to Bunka Fashion School until SCAD was on the table for me since my father always had planned for me to lean towards medicine. I just never felt that gravitation towards medicine like I did with fashion.”

Who are some of your favorite designers and why?

“As obvious and cliche as it might sound, my favorite designers are mostly all asian. Yohji Yamamoto, Dzjochen and Issey Miyake are probably my favorites. Their ready-to-wear were always simple yet captivating. I enjoy the subtle asian design traits that each designer has on each of their collections.

There was one collection by Roberto Cavalli where he based his designs on the Ming Vase which I found most similar to my own method of designing.”

Your senior collection from last year really stood out from the rest of the collections, why did you choose to incorporate Japanese culture into your looks?

“I like using my experiences to resonate into my designs. It was what I grew up knowing to be fashion, and in my mind fashion is everyone’s first first impression. I wanted whomever came across my collection’s first first impression to be ‘wow, she really utilized the essence of the Japanese characteristics.”

They were the necessary evil that the city needed to keep order.

You took inspiration from the Japanese yakuza gangs, who are seen as a taboo in the culture.

Why did you decide to use such subject?

“The summer right before senior year (when I had to choose a theme for my collection) I spent weeks exploring every parts of Tokyo. With the skills I had gained from prior classes at SCAD, I felt like I could find new inspiration and perspective from details I never noticed before while growing up there. It wasn’t until I went drinking with my friend in ‘ゴールデン街’ (Golden Gai) in the midst of Shinjuku and ended up at a strip club where I found everyone participating very peculiar. The women performing were ‘owned’ by one of the Yakuza clans and the audience (all men because it is ‘improper’ for ladies to be in the audience) were not rowdy, but respectfully sitting and observing the show. This triggered an emotional response for me. The station I lived in growing up was notoriously known for one of the Yakuza’s prostitution scouting site.The way that they controlled the city behind the scenes while the city publicly does not accept them was something I found enticing. I always understood that they were not a group to affiliate with, yet I couldn’t help but think their form of expression of their existence and their loyalty amongst their own was poetic. They were the necessary evil that the city needed to keep order.”

Any advice for future fashion designers?

“My advice to the upcoming designers: 1. Don’t force it.

2. Everything will be alright in the end - it’s not life or death.

3. Not everyone will understand your collection, but that’s okay cause it’s yours.”

What makes you an accessory designer?

“Technically I’m not an “accessory designer”. I think it starts from my interest in footwear. Athletic footwear specifically. I’ve been wanting to work in the field of basketball and serve athletes with my skills and talent.

Well it’s also because I cannot become a professional athlete myself. “

Where do you draw inspiration from?

“Tinker Hatfield and Leo Chang as they are wellknown designers for Nike, which is my all-time favorite brand. Tinker said that he doesn’t worry about how his design looks like, all he cares is if his design solves the problems for the athletes. Another thing he said is that is people don’t like or hate your design, that means you didn’t do enough. Other than that, I like the storytelling of tinker’s designs. For example, on air Jordan 21, there are lots of laser cut patterns on the upper, each one represents a story of Michael Jordan. He spent so much time talking to Michael and learn almost everything about him.”

What kind of style do you usually go for when designing, or what do you value the most when it comes to the making of a pair of shoes?

“When I design, I value the function most, I want it to be a reliable performance sneakers. But when I need to make the design, it’s a different story. I have been only making lifestyle sneakers, good looking is part of the function of lifestyle sneakers, so in terms of making, I care about the comfort, and how good they look from my personal aesthetic.”

Do you want to start your own brand? If no who do you want to design for?

“No, I do not. Instead, I want to work for NIKE. NIKE only. NIKE boy for life. Because athletic footwear requires a lot of cushioning technology, and that’s not something I can solve by myself. So, I want to work for a brand that centers athletes and the creates functional shoes.”

The birth of Japanese ramen started from a time between the 17th and 20th century. It is said that a scholar named, Shu Shunsui brought the recipe with him when he escaped Manchu rule in China to serve as an advisor to feudal lord Tokugawa Mitsukuni. There was just one problem to this part of history as there is no historical record of Shunsui actually cooking ramen for Mitsukuni.

Trained French and Italian chef, Mr. M established Ajito Ism in Oimachi and ran seven European restaurants in Tokyo before changing his focus to ramen. He has brought his background in Italian cooking by inventing Ajito Ism. M’s pizza soba. This dish is served in maze style and consists of high-quality tsukemen noodles from Kanno-Seimen draped over a bed of tomato sauce made with blended vegetables, se abura, chicken oil and gyokai dashi. Mr. M then adds pizza topping like fresh tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, olives, anchovies and garlic. It’s a unique but enthralling Italian-Japanese fusion.

Another theory includes the consumption of Japanese ramen dating back to the founding of Rai-Rai Ken in Tokyo by custom agents who had worked in Yokohama’s Chinatown. The restaurant opened in 1910, employing Chinese cooks and popularized what was then known as “shina soba”. The word “shina” stood for China, while “soba” was the noodle dish that had already been well-established in Japanese cuisine. From then on, “shin soba” was caught on by blue-collar workers, since they were an affordable form carbohydrates, and being cost-efficient for vendors.

Because shin soba” was linked to China, there had been some sensitive political controversies as it was a country that defeated and conquered by Japan just as the dish started being well received. Furthermore, in 1937, when Nanjing was invaded by Japan, a ramen shop called, “Nankin Senryo”, was founded the same time. The direct translation of the restaurant’s name was “flower”, but it was also a homonym for “occupation”. In addition, not only did blue-collar workers enjoy this meal but also politically radical students and soldiers too.

HISTORY OF RAMEN III Disaster struck during World War II, when there was a shortage and rationing of food, resulting to tight regulations on food supplies placed by the government.

Wheat flour to make ramen noodles became illegal and entered the black market. Many unemployed people also turned to hawking ramen to make a living. This meant that people selling ramen landed them a spot in jail if they were caught by authorities.

Located in Yoyogi is one of Tokyo’s best genre of Jiro-style ramen named, “Senrigan”. With their Jiro bowls pulling in big lines every day, their true masterpiece is only offered during the summer, which is “Hiyashi Chūka”. This is typically a chilled Japanese noodle dish, but Senrigan has added a Jiro-inspired twist with the trimmings. A generous amount of diced daikon, mizuna, cherry tomatoes are all served over a large helping of chilled noodles of your choice, topped with chashu, pork back fat and a delicious sesame dressing coating the dish. This special has various size options for consumers to choose from, with “mashi mashi” being the monstrous portion. This dish is definitely the world’s heartiest ramen salad.

PINEAPPLE RAMEN

With a strong pineapple theme, “Pa-Pa-Pa-Pa-Pine”, has a pineapple signage, pineapple color scheme, pineapple lights, pineapple chopstick holders, pineapple figurines, and so on. The master behind this pineapple phenomenon is a true pineapple freak named, Hiaoki Kuruta. He incorporates pineapple juice with his shoyu ramen broth and tops the dish with pineapple chunks as a final touch. He even takes his pineapple obsession further by marinating the soft-boiled eggs with pineapple juice for an extra zing.

Day 1

What better way to start your trip to Dublin than to experience the heart of the city? Book the first day of your stay at the Westin Dublin, right in the heart of downtown.

Straight out the Westin’s doorstep is some of the best shopping and walking in downtown! Grab a map and wander along the Liffey River. Head to Grafton Street, one of the two main shopping streets in the city center. Feel free to wander down any alley that catches your interestgetting lost is part of the experience! Stop by the Fashion Center in Grafton to see the studios of independent designers hard at work, and pick up one-of-a-kind pieces to style your look. Feel free to stop for afternoon snacks or lunch at the lavishly decorated Paris Café. In the mood for something quick? Find a “Chopped”- a popular chain you’ll see dotted around Grafton. Their handmade chop salads are customizable and have an extensive list of ingredients. Try a Mediterranean Falafel bowl with Lemon Dressing, and pair it with some apple-carrot juice. Healthy eating never tasted so good! Continue exploring the city center- for any history buffs, the National Museum of Ireland is a must-see. The third branch, the museum of Decorative Arts and History, displays an extensive selection of Irish Silver, medieval weaponry and clothing, and even Egyptian artifacts! Best of all, admission is free!

In the midafternoon, take a cab to the National Botanical Gardens in County Wicklow- about half an hour’s ride. The botanical gardens have free admission and are one of the most breathtaking gardens in the world. Spend an hour or two wandering the grounds, exploring the Cactus House, Orchid House, Great Palm House, Viking House, and more. What’s more, there’s a fully blooming rose garden, rock garden, and houses which feature seasonal exhibits. Connected to the gardens is Glasnevin Cemetery, Ireland’s largest necropolis. For those who have an appreciation of beautiful sculpture, Glasnevin makes for a peaceful and amazing experience. Over 1.5 million people are buried in Glasnevin, and it is Ireland’s first non-denominational church.

That means you’ll see the graves of people of many different walks of life. Further into the cemetery you’ll see the imposing, and slightly frightening, O’Connell’s tower. Daniel O’Connell, known as The Liberator, founded Glasnevin Cemetery in 1832. He is buried under O’Connell’s Tower, the tallest tower in Ireland. Even with sunny skies, the aura of Glasnevin Cemetery is both wise and unsettling. Finish your trip by strolling through the rest of the botanical gardens, before heading back to the city.

For dinner, or for before-dinner drinks, stop by The Brazen Head pub, which opened back in the medieval ages! It’s Ireland’s oldest pub, and opened as a hostel in 1198. It served as a meeting place for famous Irishmen and historic rebels. The United Irishmen planned their revolution against the British Rule in the pub due to its proximity to Dublin Castle. There is a palpable sense of history, nostalgia, and power within the old stone walls. Experience live Irish music and storytelling while you try the local brews. Wrap up your first day in Dublin by exploring Grafton and Henry street at night. Admire the lights, chatter, and city energy before heading back for the night.

Day 2

Powerscourt & Eniskerry

For your second day in Dublin, explore the quiet wonders of the city’s outskirts. It’s time to take a cab out to Powerscourt, a gorgeous estate near Eniskerry Village and less than an hour outside Dublin. Check into the Powerscourt Hotel- formerly owned by Ritz Carlton- and explore the hotel’s beautiful landscaping. You can spend your day at the professional golf course, or take a ten-minute walk to the Powerscourt Estate.

The Powerscourt Estate is home of the Powerscourt Gardens, voted the Number 3 Garden in the World by National Geographic in 2014. Spend a few hours wandering the gardens and admiring the exquisite gardening, fountains, and sculpture. Visit the estate’s pet cemetery- the largest in Irelandand read the nostalgic names of the family’s beloved pets, like “Mrs. Mare” and “Little Bots.” The garden trail will take you from the Pepperpot Tower, once used for defense, to the Italian and Japanese gardens. The estate and gardens are set into the Irish countryside, so exploring the gardens will take you up and down- giving you both a workout and an excellent view! When you reach the grassy pasture with a gorgeous mountainside view, try to catch a glimpse of the estate’s horses, Boncho, Giddy, and Glencree! The final path will take you into what is arguably the gardeners’ most beloved project- a flower and rose garden with explosive blooms of every color. In fact, the gardens take so much constant maintenance that you’ll likely see the team working in some part or another as you explore!

Finally, head back into the main estate-turned-cafe to shop for Irish delicacies like infused jams and Irish cream chocolate.

For tea time, head back to the Powerscourt Hotel to visit the Sugar Loaf lounge. It’s quite popular, so you’ll need a reservation! Irish tea is a sweet and warm experience, with brews like Caramel Snap and Irish Breakfast. Dublin & Bray

For your third day, it’s time to explore more outside the city. Stay at the Intercontinental Dublin, a comfortable distance between downtown and Dublin International Airport. This 5-star hotel is surrounded by landscaped gardens and serves a wonderful afternoon tea. Try booking one of their “garden pods” to enjoy a whimsical group experience! After you’ve gotten your energy up, it’s time to head out exploring. Have a concierge give you maps to the DART- Dublin’s coastal transit system. The DART is an electric rail following the eastern coastline of Dublin, making it one of the most scenic routes in Europe. The trains are comfortable and clean, and they travel at a modest 100 km/h or 62 mph- no bullet trains here! Trains have free Wi-Fi and frequent stops, so you won’t get stuck riding until you get bored.

Ride the DART as long or as little as you want. Feel free to get off at any stop that catches your eye- it’s easy to find your way back to the station to keep going! Notable stops include Killiney Bay, Howth’s Cliff, Malahide Castle, Blackrock Market, Clontarf, Dun Laoghaire, and Bray.

Killiney Bay is the perfect place for a beachside walk along the sandy cove. The Howth’s Cliff Coastal Walk gives you a fantastic view of the cliffs, Baily Lighthouse, and an ancient burial site, the Ben of Howth. Malahide Castle is one of the oldest castles in Ireland. Attached to the castle is the Walled Garden. Be sure to look out for the ghost, Puck, who was once the castle jester! Blackrock Market is a maze of stalls where you can buy just about anything. It used to be a historical hotspot for robberies!

Clontarf is the home of Bram Stoker- the author of Dracula! Once you’ve had your fill of adventure, ride the line to the end (about an hour trip) to get to Bray, a small town by the ocean. Bray is the coastal town that geographically keeps Dublin from falling into the ocean! It’ll be windy, so bring a coat! Bray is a quiet town with tourists in mindwalk along the ocean and admire the Sea Life aquarium and the children’s fair. Try eating at the Ocean Bar & Grill- their vegetarian curry is excellent! Venture further into town to check out the Italian quarter and the so dubbed “Fanciest McDonalds in the world!”

To wrap up your evening in Bray, stop by the Harbour Bar, which Lonely Planet named the “Best Pub in the World” in 2010.

The Harbour Bar was established in 1872 and has a great deal of history. Enjoy free music and comedy, drink an Irish beer, and pet the house cats! Whiskey Weekend is coming up soon- from May 17-19, you can sample whiskey like Liquid Sunshine and Uisce Beatha, and meet the makers themselves! Nothing wraps up a trip to Dublin like an Irish whiskey by the fire as the wind beats outside.

Ireland is truly a magical place, with its rolling hills, sandy beaches, ancient castles, and blooming gardens. Vol. 5 Fly in style!

If you own a growing business and find yourself traveling constantly, you’re probably fed up with flying commercial. You may have thought about purchasing a private jet. Although private jets can be for personal use, they can be a wise business expense for small to midsize companies.

You’ll have freedom of schedule and be able to efficiently transport your employees, clients, and yourself. However, buying a private jet involves a lot more than picking a model and writing a check. There are numerous logistical and financial concerns that you’ll want to have under your belt so you don’t find any nasty surprises after you’re in too deep. Luckily, we’ve done the research for you, and compiled a starter guide to buying your first jet.

The first step to picking a jet is determining your needs.

What do you require, and what do you expect your aircraft to do? Are you buying for business, or for pleasure? Are you flying domestic or international?

How many passengers will you have? Next, you’ll need to decide whether you want to buy new, used, or charter. Many experts determine the cutoff point between ownership and chartering to be 250 hours. That is, if you plan on using the jet for more than 250 hours per year, it will make more financial sense to own. If you fly less than 250 hours, chartering will come out on top. Some sources will tell you 150 is the cutoff, others will say 350-400. There’s no perfect answer. However, Delta 747 Captain and private jet captain David Moore says that 250 is a good middle ground. If you plan on flying often, chartering will become a huge expense. If you own a jet but don’t fly often enough, it will waste away in your hangar and may develop mechanical problems. As any plane or yacht owner knows, you have to run it consistently to keep it in peak shape. If you try to keep it for seasonal use, you may find that it has problems when you try to run it after a long break.

Once you’ve decided what your needs are and determined how often you will fly, begin looking at models and figuring out what works for you or your company.

There are five types of jets to choose: Light, MidSize, Super-Mid, Heavy, and Turbo-Prop. Citations are most commonly purchased by people who need a small jet. A Citation CJ2 is a Light jet and costs around $6 million USD. A HondaJet or Cirrus SF50 can carry four passengers about 1,930 km without refuling. The biggest jets include Boeing and Gulfstream. A Gulfstream retails for about $60 million USD. The Gulfstream 650ER, priced at $66 million USD can fly 19 passengers a distance of 12,070 km. The Bombardier Global 7500 is one of the most capable and expensive jets on the market with a price tag of $72.8 million USD. It is the world’s largest and longest range jet and has sold out through 2021.

However big the initial price tag of the jet is, that’s just the beginning of your investment. There are numerous other expenses to owning a jet that aren’t hidden so much as less commonly researched. First-time buyers who overlook these costs are bound to run into serious financial trouble down the line.

Just buying the jet is a small problem- potential buyers will need to seriously appreciate how much it costs to keep one running, staffed, and in good condition. Operation costs, pilot salaries, insurance, and maintenance are all heavy hitters.

When it comes to jet ownership, the numbers get big-fast. Operation costs are an estimated 15% of the jet’s original price. For example, if you buy a Citation for $6 million USD, your operation costs are $900,000 USD per year. If you buy a Gulfstream at $60 million USD, your operation costs will be around 5-10% of the price tag at $3 million USD per year. You’ll need to keep the operation cost in mind to make sure you can actually afford to keep and run the jet.

After operational costs comes pilot cost. Due to a shortage of private jet pilots, you’ll likely need to hire a fulltime pilot. If you try to hire a part-time pilot, you’ll find that they can’t simply be at your beck and call- they have other clients, other jobs, and personal lives. Hiring a full-time pilot will ensure you can always carry out your schedule, a must have if using a jet for business purposes. The average pilot’s salary for a small plane is $100,000 USD annually.

And guess what- you’re legally required to have a copilot as well. A copilot’s salary for a small plane is $75,000 USD annually. If you’ve got a Gulfstream, you’ll be paying your captain at least $250,000 USD and your copilot $150,000 USD per year. Additionally, your crew is legally required to attend training- that’s another $30,000 USD per year.

Next, you’ll need to calculate the costs of insurance. Insurance costs about 2% of the plane’s value annually.

So, if you own a $6 million USD Citation, that’s $120,000 USD yearly for insurance. You’ll need to house your plane in a hangar at a private airport, which is another few thousand a month, depending on the type of plane and location. You’ll also have costs from landing, handling, and parking when you fly on trips. Additionally, you need to budget for maintenance and parts issues. Routine maintenance costs around $1700 USD per hour for a small jet. Finally, there’s the cost of gas. The May 2018 rate of jet fuel is $90/barrel. LibertyJet has put together a sample operating budget of owning a Gulfstream G650. Flying for 200 hours per year, with fuel costs at $4.40/gallon will cost $442,640 USD annually.

At this point, you might be thinking of purchasing a used jet as a safer way to start. The average private jet owner replaces their aircraft about every 3 to 5 years, so the market for used jets is huge. Spend lots of time researching, and have an agent help walk you through the inspecting and buying process.

You’ll need to know the condition of any potential new or used jet. Find out where it lived, how it was housed, who took care of it, and how it was used. Make sure the seller tells you what phase of the maintenance cycle it’s in- you don’t want to be stuck with a huge maintenance bill right after purchasing! Get a pre-buy inspection with your own inspector as well as the seller’s.

Takazawa, a French-Japanese fusion restaurant known to be one of the most exclusive dining spots in Tokyo. The master behind this upscale place is Yoshiaki Takazawa. He has made headlines when he first established this restaurant.

Located in the central business district of Akasaka, this private setting is only limited to ten customers every night. Reservations are known to be exceptionally hard to get as it can only be done through email. Business and fame of this place built up as it caught the attention of Alinea’s Grant Achatz.

“Enjoy Your Imagination” is the title of his ten-course meal, and is one of his greatest hits.

The dishes include a classic Ratatouille, finished with a single crystal of salt and fermented black bean. Other than that, an exotic dish named “Dinner in the Forest”, is an assortment of bear meat and mushrooms along with creamy burdock root decorated with charred pine branches on a faux tree stump. For a simpler yet delicious dish is a Scallop Spaghetti topped with sea urchin. Chef Takazawa has an interesting concept of engaging with his customers where his English-speaking wife explain each dish with lustful details, while he plates each dish with great precision at the back of the intimate dining room.

Notable as one of Tokyo’s most exclusive and highend restaurant, Takazawa’s restaurant is a place to impress and indulge. The approximate price to pay per person is said to be $400 for a meal.

Handling Workplace Stress & Issues We all have stress - whether it be from relationships, work, school, or just life in general. In this month’s issue, let’s discover the different ways we can cope and handle stress in the workplace.

orking in Japan is like being in a pressure cooker. A typical workplace in Japan often has a passive-aggressive nature of interpersonal conflicts and employees are trained to internalize their problems. Employees are usually not allowed to speak their mind or give their opinions, they only carry out tasks that are instructed by their superiors. This restricted environment only nurtures stress and anxiety disorders. Stress is known to be a major threat to the mental health of the society and this results in a high suicide rate in Japan. In order to overcome this menacing circumstance, there are many ways to deal with stress. Furthermore, it is important for individuals to recognize and understand that stress, along with many other mental illnesses, can cause different negative impacts to an individual. However, it is an important reminder that the suggested solutions are definitely not “one size fits all” and require a little trial and error to see which method suits an individual best. Some of our suggestions on how to deal with workplace stress include:

1. Identify the Cause When in an unfamiliar or pressured environment, people must always remember to keep perspective in mind. It is crucial for people to take a step back and take control of the situation by thinking about what exactly causes the stress and anxiety they are experiencing. These causes could include workload, uncooperative coworkers, harassment or bullying, and so on. Identifying the stressor is an important factor as it is vital to the first step of solving the problem. This would make it easier for the individual to understand what’s happening and from there try to solve it.

2. Limit your Stressors Once the stressor has been identified, an individual should always try to limit the impact and influence it has.

For example, if a coworker in the office gets on your nerves, the ideal thing to do is to reduce interactions with him or her. In other situations, if a job position is the stress factor, it might be a good idea to consider switching jobs if possible. According to research, a change in environment could help reduce stress as well as decrease the level of unhappiness that often come from staying in the same area for a long period of time.

3. Take a Vacation With many rules and regulations for time off, taking a vacation might be difficult and limited. However, good planning might benefit someone feeling stress or anxiety because they would be able to take advantage of national holidays and take a few days off. Ideally, an individual would not need to use up the majority of their vacation days at once if they plan properly. By spreading out holiday plans and breaks, it will accumulate to having more days off. For example, if a national holiday falls on a Monday, taking a day off on the preceding Friday or following Tuesday will provide a four-day break, with only using one day of vacation time.

4. Seek Help The majority of Japanese people are trained to internalize their emotions and feelings, it is still necessary for people to not follow this trend and seek help when they need it. The younger generation is starting to realize the severity of this issue and have started asking for help, especially when realizing they are unable to handle something alone. Talking to a coworker, friend, family member, and so on, is definitely an important step that needs to be widely supported by this society. Reaching out to someone would, in fact, be very beneficial towards an individual under stress.

5. Know your Limits Within an advanced society, everyone is striving to impress their colleagues by displaying their hard work, dedication and professionalism. However, before burning out, it is important for an individual to be realistic by not idealizing themselves as a superhero. Instead, it is crucial to slow down to take a step back and ask for additional help when it is needed, especially when facing tough issues. It is also important for a company to be understanding and realizing that a happy employee would be much more productive than a stressed-out one.
