Hi-Line Endorses Obama for President The Tiger Hi-Line is doing its part to actively engage in the politics that surround us this year. Because this election is so important (the economy still stands on thin ice and programs including the new health care system created recently may be abandoned), it is essential now more than ever that the Tiger Hi-Line endorses a president for candidate. The views reflected in this article are solely the opinions of the Tiger Hi-Line staff and do not reflect those of the school district.

Our method was simple. First we came up with a list of six issues that the candidates have different stances on. We created a survey for all Hi-Line staff members that included the views and approaches each candidate will take if elected. However, we did not include the candidate’s names with their policies. This way, people could vote on the issues without getting distracted by party biases.

The blind voting was a key part to our investigation. Especially as teens, it is easy to sucumb to peer pressure or family pressure.

Even hearing pieces on the news channel for or against a party can sway our opinions. We didn’t want these pressures to get in the way.

We merely voted straight on the issues.

After tallying up all the votes, the winner was clear. President Barack Obama led governor Mitt Romney by a large margin in every category except taxes where he won by a slim margin.

Abortion: The clear majority of people agreed with Obama’s healthcare law that requires contraceptives available for free for women in workplace health plans. Romney’s less popular stance is that Roe v. Wade should be reversed by a future Supreme Court ruling, thus no longer offering women the choice of abortion.

War: Obama plans to make major cuts to the army and marine corps (part of a gov-

ernment agreement to cut $487 billion in military spending over a decade).

The majority of students in journalism agreed with this stance of cutting back on the military. Romney, on the other hand, plans to increase the troops and warships in number by adding $100 billion to the Pentagon budget by 2016.

Energy: In this category, the vote was unanimous. Obama plans to continue spending heavily on green energy. He has also embraced nuclear energy as a clean source. The class was in agreement of his policies regarding energy use and sustainability. No one supported Romney’s ideas. He calls for support in opening up the Atlantic, Pacific, Western Lands, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and offshore Alaska for drilling.

Gay rights: A civil right of particular importance to young people of this generation is gay rights. It was not surprising that all but one student felt similarly about rights of individuals with a different sexual orientation. Especially by knowing people in our school that are gay, it makes a difference when voting for a candidate who plans to either secure or demolish their basic rights in our country. Obama repealed the military ban on openly gay members. He publicly supports gay marriage. Romney, however, says that same-sex marriage should be banned not by any state who so chooses, but with a constitutional amendment.

Healthcare: Obama has put the United States on a path to universal health care, and the Supreme Court upheld the law’s mandate for almost everyone to obtain insurance. The Hi-Line staff is in agreement with this path to coverage for the majority of people. If

elected, Romney promises to repeal the universal health care law directly.

His belief is that states should make their own policies regarding health care.

Taxes: Just over half of the journalism staff agreed that everyone should pay their fair share, which Obama says is a key step in reducing the deficit and a way to invest in what we need to grow and strengthen our economy. Obama said he will get rid of tax loopholes that give millionaires trillions of dollars in tax breaks.

He will ensure that wealthy Americans through creative accounting will no longer pay a lower tax rate than middle-class families. Romney plans on making 20 percent cuts across the board in marginal rates. He will maintain current tax rates on interest, dividends and capital gains.

We encourage voters young and old to take a deep look into the issues that most affect them between now and November. By sticking to a straight ticket that only references your party affiliation, you may be missing what you have “intentionally” voted for. Make your vote count and educate yourself before even reaching the polls. You may be surprised to find that when you compare the issues blindly, your thoughts about what is right and wrong may pull you in a different direction than that of your political party. When it comes to it, the voting process is solitary and anonymous. No one will ever know which candidate you ended up agreeing “more” with, and they don’t have to. It is your own opinion that counts.

Presidents need to make it a priority Breakthroughs and great steps for mankind have been speckling the space exploration front for a few years now.

With ambitious expeditions comes the need for more funding, which has been a source of controversy across the nation; should we funnel more money into space exploration or cut some serious funds?

Personally, I am often surprised by how many people believe that less money should be put towards space exploration. I feel that it’s kind of a no-brainer.

Among other large possibilities, we all have to consider that if this planet should, for any reason, become uninhabitable, space is our best chance of survival. Cutting funding only keeps us in the dark of our dying planet (among other extraterrestrial and terrestrial disasters). As loony as that may sound, the danger is real.

We have to understand that furthering science and discovery is a priority in this country. Neglecting advances in science and engineering will create a black hole where revolutionary and worldchanging projects used to thrive.

An abrupt stop in scientific progress is the last thing this country needs.

Fighting off car bombs and suicide bombers every day, it seems like U.S. troops would be better off not being in Afghanistan. But reality is inevitable — it’s nearly impossible to pull out of a war, especially an unwinnable one. The second troops pull out, Afghanistan is going to be back where it was at the beginning of the decade — a violent, frightened country that still doesn’t allow women to work or be educated. The plight of these women goes unnoticed in our news cycle filled with campaign polls and attack ads. There is no way to pull out of the war unscathed.

An unwinnable war, death tolls climbing, oppressed citizens — it deserves our attention.

Teens tackle election issues It’s that time of year, Americans fighting, yelling and angrily sharing facebook photos and quotes about politics. Just about everyone has an opinion, but not everyone cares enough to get out and vote.

Young people are notoriously the most difficult to persuade to get to the polls. Typically, 18-24 year olds show up to the polls the least. According to the U.S. Census, even in the historic 2008 election, only 49 percent of the youngest age bracket showed up to vote compared to 60 percent of 2544 year olds, 69 percent of 4564 year olds and 70 percent of 65 year olds and over.

While a few students are still on the fence about who to vote for, senior Jay Morales has very strong feelings about who he wants to vote for in November.

“I’m voting for Mitt Romney because I don’t think Obama did a very good job and he raised the debt over four trillion dollars. [Obama] said Bush raised the debt four trillion dollars, but Obama raised it

I am voting for Obama because I believe he is the best option to lead our country for the next four years,” Mallaro said.

Political issues that affect students Obama Romney In January, the president signed a document for a new military strategy. The president noted the successful raid on Osama bin Laden’s finding place, the death of the al Qaeda leader and the end to the war in Iraq. His new ideas seek to eliminate the military’s ability to fight two wars at once but will still allow armed forces to combat terrorism and confront any threats. His plans advocate for a $500 billion spending cut at the Pentagon.

“Yes, our military will be leaner, but the world must know: The United States is going to maintain our military superiority with armed forces that are agile, flexible and ready for the full range of contingencies and threats. I firmly believe, and I think the American people understand, that we can keep our military strong -- and our nation secure -- with a defense budget that continues to be larger than roughly the next 10 countries combined,” President Barack Obama said. --CNN.com

Obama intends to make an American Opportunity Tax Credit. The universal and refundable money will ensure that $4,000 of college education is completely free for most Americans and will cover two-thirds of tuition at an average public college (making community college education completely free for the majority of students). Students using this credit will be required to do 100 hours of community service. Obama will also make financial aid easier by allowing families to apply by checking a box on their tax form instead of filling in a separate application.

Romney’s budget will increase defense spending by roughly $2 trillion over the next decade (compared to the current budget). He intends to pull out American troops and make the transition to Afghan security forces by 2014 (the same timeline Obama has also laid out).

Romney plans to redirect $26 billion in annual education money flowing into districts based on the number of low-income and special needs students they have. Instead, he declares the money should follow the individual students, and their parents can decide which schools (physical or online) they will attend (and the funds will attend).

With states permission, children could also attend private schools with the public funds. He will require all schools to publish their test scores so parents make an educated choice on where to send their child.

Cultured club If you are interested in learning about Japanese culture, love exploring different kinds of asian foods, are obsessed with reading manga comics or watching anime television series, than Anime Club is the club for you.

The goal of this club is for it to be a friendly place where you can hang out with other teens that share the same interests. It also allows you to be comfortable just being yourself and having a ton of fun. Most importantly this club offers a great time and a chance for you to meet new people.

Many people may not really know what the meaning of anime actually is. Anime is used to describe the creation of Japanese animation that provides entertainment with stunning artwork and a unique style that appeals to teens and adults. It is not, as many people confuse it, childrens cartoons.

We got the inside scoop on what goes on during club meetings from the leader, junior Forrest Mitchell Moore.

“We come to the meetings and watch some anime that the group wants to see.

We will also bring in some manga and read them. Each week somebody will bring in a different type of asian food so we can get to know about Japanese culture as well. We try and do something different each time so it appeals to everyone’s interests,” Moore

says.

The plans in store for this year are much different than what has been done in the past. Forrest has planned out a couple of trips and some fun parties throughout the semester.

“There is this awesome Japanese themed store in Cedar Rapids called Yumie’s that would be a very cool place for us to visit. They have a bunch of anime accessories and clothes so that is one of the places we are hoping on going to,” Moore says.

There are going to be some fundraisers to raise the money to help pay for the expenses. The members of the club are going to be making some homemade Japanese food and some really cool Japanese things to sell such as bracelets, charms, bookmarks, etc.

“We are also going to do a cosplay party, where people dress up as the anime characters in a series. We are going to have it as our Halloween party where people can chose which of their favorite characters to be,” Moore says. “There will be a Christmas party as well and hopefully some other fun things in store too.”

Internet offers music listening options With all the new music coming out recently, people are excited to get their hands on all of it, but on iTunes or Amazon, a new album can cost anywhere from $9.99 to $14.99. Fortunately, the Internet is opening possibilities for exploring new music for free.

Spotify is an Internet radio site that is totally free … for the first six months of the trial. After that users have a restriction of 10 hours per month unless they are subscribers and don’t mind paying a small monthly fee. Users can also integrate their Twitter or Facebook with their Spotify accounts to let them listen on Facebook or Twitter.

Doesn’t this sound kinda familiar? And illegal? Even though it sounds like a scenario in which the police would bust into one’s house and yell, “Freeze!” as one is listening to the new Green Day album while chatting up friends on Facebook, Spotify is totally legal. It isn’t a music sharing site such as the famous “Pirate Bay” and “MP3raid” and is a subscriber website where users aren’t getting the music for much cheaper or completely free.

Since it contracts with a lot of music production companies, it falls within legal boundaries.

Pandora is another legal site that allows users to listen to music that they want to listen to with only

one stipulation. Instead of just putting on a band and listening only to that band, this site allows users to hear music that sounds or is a lot like the song, album, or band that users put into the search. Basically, it’s just one huge “genius” from iTunes.

So that raises a few questions.

Is iTunes getting frustrated with the success of these sites? Well … maybe. Both Pandora and Spotify have apps that users can download straight to their smartphones to listen to music. The only problem is the data consumption. If users don’t have WiFi, it might be a little harder to access these without using their data plans, while iTunes allows users

to put the music straight to their phones without using data whenever they listen to music. Not to mention that in some areas they don’t exactly have the newest “4G” data coverage.

Overall, these sites and others such as “Groove Shark” and “Rhapsody” could possibly change the way we listen to music. Groove Shark, however had some trouble in January, but overcame. Along with the same things as Spotify, the music listening and channel creating, users also have two different levels of subscriptions.

Senior serves as music intern at BIGhouse

Photos by Lauren Nickerson ll Senior Julie Doyle follows a line of other CFHS students who have served at BIGhouse as a music director. Her duties include a lot of behind the scenes work for the BIGhouse music, including auditioning people, setting up the stage and picking out the music.

For many high school students having a job they love doing can be rare. Finding a job in their field of interests can be hard. However, senior Julie Doyle has found a job she is passionate about.

Doyle is an intern at Orchard Hill Church. She works mostly with BIGhouse, which is a Christian youth program welcome to all high school students. “I do a lot of behind the scenes work for the BIGhouse music, so I schedule people for different bands. We audition people, set up the stage and pick out music,” Doyle said.

Two of her friends had done the internship at Orchard in previous years, and that was how Doyle became interested. “Jarek Bakken was the intern my sophomore year, and Jack Van Gent was the intern last year, and I just thought it was really cool. It had a lot of sweet opportunities that I was like, wow, I really want to be apart of this,” Doyle said.

Doyle prepared for the internship by attending the Global Leadership Summit, which is an annual training event for church, ministry and community leaders to sharpen their leadership skills. “I first started as part of the global leadership summit. Those were my first two days. I went to that just trying to learn the ropes of what it takes to be a good leader,” Doyle said.

As with most jobs, Doyle faces some day to day communication challenges with her internship. “When I try to communicate with people proactively and they don’t respond right away, it can be challenging. But don’t get me wrong; it’s a lot of fun,” Doyle said.

Doyle is passionate about music and is involved with band at the high school, so this job allows her to work with something she loves. However, Doyle does not believe she will go into any type of career involving music in the future. “Right now I’m looking into physical therapy, so I could use some of these leadership skills to help me start my own physical therapy practice,” Doyle said.

The internship so far has prepared Doyle for whatever future career she may want to go into. “If I want to open my own physical therapy practice someday, it will take a lot of communication, so just being able to communicate with people is a good skill to have. Also scheduling time and time management are important, along with just being able to work well with others,” Doyle said.

There are many things Doyle loves about her job, but specifically her favorite is the interaction with all the people at Orchard. “My favorite part of the job is getting to know different people at the church, especially learning about their faith stories. It helps me grow in my faith,” Doyle said.

Doyle is still doing her internship at Orchard Hill Church and plays guitar in the band every Wednesday night at BIGhouse.

12 Football team prepares for big game Sports

Giving up 28 points in the first half to Cedar Rapids Prairie last week wasn’t on the game plan, but the Tigers rebounded solidly in the second half, pulling out the victory 41-30.

Seniors Jake Buck and Nick Clark combined for 211 yards on the ground in the second half alone. “[Defensively], we played a terrible first half. But in the second half we really showed up to play,” junior Jared Farley said. The only points scored on Cedar Falls in the second half came from a safety.

For the already injure-prone Tigers, the bad news refuses to cease. Senior wideout Brandon Corkery injured his ankle in the Prairie game and will miss the rest of the season. Senior defensive end Riley Gardner will require knee surgery to

repair multiple torn ligaments in his knee that he suffered at Linn-Mar. Gardner will also likely be missing the upcoming basketball season. Bryan, who returned for the Prairie game, just recovered from a knee surgery that took place after the first game of the season.

The good news for the Tigers is that they’re still undefeated. “We just gotta keep doing what we do,” Buck said.

How exciting was it to beat the juniors?

Very exciting, it’s nice know ing that we’re better than the juniors.

How much protection did you get from your offensive line?

I got a lot of protection from Haley Harkless. She did a really good job of holding people off for me.

What was the toughest part of powderpuff football?

The toughest part was trying to follow all the rules of the game.

How did you prepare for the game?

I practiced throwing outside of school a lot and running routes.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, the Tiger women were represented on two fronts right across the street from each other at the same time.
