Performers prepare for upcoming fall debut Arlene Freudenberg Staff Writer

Normally, people think of being on stage as a nerve-racking, stomach turning adventure. However, the students in the fall plays students feed off the energy to make their show the best possible. “By the time we get on stage, we’ve been doing it so long it’s [stage fright] just gone,” senior Matt Moore said. “I usually don’t [get stage fright], but if I do, it’s about five minutes before I go on stage on the first night of the show. It’s just the classic clenching your stomach before you go on, and it goes away about a minute into the show or less,” junior Chris Bowden said. The play “You Can’t Take it With You” and the one act play “Mary Just Broke Up With This Guy” will be held in the high school C.C. Stanard Auditorium on Friday, Nov. 2, and Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7:30 p.m. “This play’s about a family that’s out there to enjoy life, and they don’t care how they’re doing it either. The father makes fireworks for a living, their mother writes plays for fun, one daughter likes to dance ballet constantly, a son-in-law plays the vibraphone and the grandfather collects snakes. Yes, live snakes. They meet the Kirbys who are Alice, one of the daughters, boyfriend’s parents. They are you’re

classic, conservative family who are in big business and do things the ‘proper’ way. It’s very (he pauses) interesting to see how these families get along when they first meet, but you’ll have to come to the play to see what happens,” Bowden said. The cast members practice every night, sometimes staying as late as 9 p.m. In the middle of the scrambling to memorize their lines, setting up the set and doing their homework, they actually have to perform. However, in spending all this time together, the cast created a special bond that helps them through every moment until their performance. “Being with the same people three hours every day for about three months makes the cast really close and often spurs an on set romance,” junior Ben Main said. Because the cast spends that much time together, their friendships become really strong and the audience will see it when they watch the play. “I enjoy being in the play because of the people you become friends with. You meet some great people who really care about you. You develop a type of ‘family’ with these guys. Plus, we get to do some pretty sweet stuff on stage, and we like to have fun with it. We get to create an entire story that was written on paper and make it real and pretend

of their lives. “I’ve been in 10 productions since 2nd grade,” Bowden said. But the other benefit to all the effort polishing performances and building relationships is how comfortable they feel on stage and how much energy they can capture from the audience. “When I’m on stage I feel energized. I get out there, and I’m instantly alert and thinking, making sure I get everything done I’m suppose to and remembering my lines. It’s also a lot of fun to see the audience to react to jokes we’ve been putting in and working on,” Bowden said. However, after rehearsing the same lines over and over, day after day, the cast cherishes why they love to act on opening night. “The best part of plays is the two seconds before you have to go on, and you are freaking out thinking, ‘Why am I doing this.’ Then you get on stage and a whole different person takes over what you do,” Main said. Tickets will be sold at the door for $6 for adults and $4 for children. The students of Cedar Falls High School may also use their activity passes to see the show. “The audience will roar with laughter so hard they’ll almost cry,” English teacher and play director Michelle Rathe said.

This club is for students who are interested in debating, learning about different cultures and discussing political issues. “We role-play as members of the United Nations using parliamentary procedure. We use the information that we gathered about a specific country throughout the semester to represent each nation as delegates at the fall and spring conferences,” wrote Aykens in her Fall Model U.N. brochure. Students learn how to express viewpoints diplomatically, develop leadership and responsibility from Model U.N.
