These cameras will be high definition along with a larger range to rid the system of any “dead spots” where cameras can not see.

“They give a much clearer image, and in some cases they view 360 degrees instead of just one direction,” Becker said.

This will also help the school with any investigations and problems such as theft and issues in the hallways.

“Safety and security are very important to us, and the upgrade in cameras will really help in those areas,” Becker said.

In an ever changing world where technology seems to do more and more every day, it is hard keeping up. These new cameras will not only help the staff, but the students as well with safely in the school.

While behind wheel, drivers should utilize iPhone’s texting limits On May 23, 2008, my father was driving me to baseball practice and it was a fairly significant day. It was the first day I was being tried out for the pitcher, and as a small and frail eight-year-old, it was a pretty big deal.

This was probably the most excited I had ever been for a practice in my entire life at that point. I had been practicing lobbing baseballs at our weird basement-garage hybrid’s wall for the past few days, and even though I sucked, I had an unearned confidence in myself.

A couple miles away from the practice diamond, we stopped at a routine red light.

Sitting and waiting for it to turn, I stared out the window at the brown and mucky Mississippi River flowing next to me, enjoying my life as a simpleminded eight-year-old kid.

Out of nowhere, a car came flying into the fender of the 2007 Honda Pilot my dad was driving. My head whiplashed forward barely missing the back of the seat in front of me.

The tires made a screeching sound I had not heard before or since.

A few expletives were shouted from the front seat, another thing I had not heard before that moment. My dad grudgingly hopped out of the car to investigate and discuss the damage. While that was going on, I sat there dazed and confused. With a slight headache, I sat there watching the back of the seat in front of me.

Confusion was the main emotion I felt, and while it was just a fender bender, I have neck problems still to this day that are direct effects from that day in May. Now, if my slightly sad sob story doesn’t get your attention for these next few paragraphs and statistics, please ask around. I’m sure you could find someone who has it 100 times worse than I do.

First off, I will start with the biggest and scariest statistic.

According to The National Safety Council, there were 1.6 million crashes in 2016. Stemming from that, there were 330,000 severe injuries caused by the driver who was texting while operating.

In fact, 64 percent of all automobile accidents are caused by distracted driving. That is over half of all accidents in the United States caused by one

Your brain is not adequate at multi-tasking. It jumps between the multiple activities so fast that it cannot do anything well.

When driving, that is amplified 100 percent. Even if you are just talking on the phone, your brain still lacks the capacity to effectively pay attention to the road.

The prefrontal cortex is pretty much shut off from the point where you decide to access the phone. You put aside the thought of “I’m putting my life and perhaps hundreds of other drivers’ lives on the line,” and just continue on.

This is a real problem facing not only America but the rest of the world. There are not a whole lot of solutions that Americans willingly will do. The addiction that Americans are facing means very little of the population will put their phones down behind the wheels.

The only thing that seems would work well enough to end a major portion of distracted driving is to completely shut down phone use in a mov-

ing vehicle. The only problem is that passengers will be absurdly angry having to do something other than sitting on their phones. They would be forced to go back to the stone age. An age where there was no such thing as an LED screen accessible in a vehicle.

Instead, people were forced to look outside, socialize without keyboard and pair of thumbs.

Luckily, Apple is starting to move in the right direction.

Apple is moving in the right direction with the Do Not Disturb While Driving feature.

Included with IOS 11 is a new feature that forces users to think about phone usage in the car. The nagging and extra steps users have to use make them think about whether or not it’s worth it to endanger not only yourself but others around them. It is a step in the right direction in terms of cutting down on distracted driving, but without that hard discipline on society, it will be incredibly hard to make any progress.

OPINION HI-LINE Proposed tax cuts will devaste health care coverage Friday, Oct. 27, 2017

With $473 billion being cut from Medicare, $1.5 trillion being cut from Medicaid over the next decade, and the one percent being gifted hundreds of billions in tax breaks, this makes it more clear than ever that GOP congresspeople don’t care about the average working person, and that corporate donors are using our elected officials like sock puppets.

Make no mistake: the proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid will hurt Americans.

Medicare covers 55 million Americans, and Medicaid, 70 million. And the vast majority of those aren’t people taking advantage of the system, as Republicans so often claim.

They’re children, folks with disabilities and people living in nursing homes.

These are people who have no other options. These are kids whose parents cannot afford to pay for doctor’s visits and people living with disabilities severe enough that they cannot work.

“A government only concerned with profit cannot and will not work to benefit those who have no money to give it ...”

According to an analysis by the American Institutes for Research, disabled workers with a high school education earn 37 percent less than peers with similar educations. How can we as a country expect someone earning 37 percent less than most people with a high school education to pay for their healthcare? At that wage, it is simply not possible.

Medicaid, which under the GOP plan would be cut by more than $1.5 trillion over the next decade, is currently covering 60 percent of those living in nursing homes. We cannot in good conscience abandon our parents and grandparents who cannot care for themselves to die.

Though this tax plan wears the face of fiscal conservatism, the corporate tax breaks aren’t truly the issue. The issue is how we’re paying for them: by cutting trillions from healthcare services that protect the most vulnerable among us.

If you’ve paid even the slightest attention to political news over the past year (or eight), you’d notice that every couple months, a new tactic is tested with the hopes of repealing the PPACA, which at present date insures more than 20 million Americans, with the most recent repeal and replace effort being the Graham-Cassidy Bill.

Before that came the BCRA, or Better Care Recon-

ciliation Act, which was merely the Senate version of the House bill entitled the AHCA, or American Health Care Act. In fact, over the past eight years, the GOP has made more than 50 attempts to repeal what in their minds is the worst thing to happen in this country. Even Ben Carson commented in 2013 that Obamacare was “the worst thing since slavery.” Enslaving an entire race of people purely because of their skin colour is apparently on equal footing with letting poor people go to the doctor.

This entire charade isn’t really about improving conditions for the average American, and it’s not about stimulating the economy or being financially conservative either.

Financially conservative would be not proposing a $639 billion military defense budget.

This isn’t even about knocking down every monument of sociopolitical progress President Obama made, as is claimed by many a Democrat.

It’s about cash.

After failing to pass a successful PPACA repeal for what is nearing the 60th time, a Republican congressman was reported saying their donors were “furious.” Particularly angry GOP donors are beginning to back away from the party because even with control over the House, the Senate and the White House, the Republican party is incapable of passing anything that would benefit their wealthy sponsors.

Recently, in an interview with Maria Bartiromo from Fox News, Trump said about the GOP tax plan, “It’s about me representing rich people.”

A government only concerned with profit cannot and will not work to benefit those who have no money to give it, and a government led by a sociopathic billionaire will not care for people who cannot care for themselves.

Student shares her migration story at Chicago festival

The backpack Saba Aydiner carried with her on her family’s migration to America contained all of her belongings that could fit from her home: Istanbul, Turkey, and one of the objects inside the backpack was a small journal with “Adventure Time” written on the front.

Unfortunately, the pages of the journal were ruined from the water that seeped in during the long agonizing boat ride that brought Aydiner and her family to safety. Her words recollecting the journey in the journal had smeared and dissolved away.

After escaping persecution from the Turkish government, Aydiner and her family traveled to Cedar Falls, a town that they had previously lived in before when Aydiner’s father had been a visiting professor at the University of Northern Iowa prior to moving back to Istanbul.

On Saturday, Oct. 21, Aydiner told her migration story to the public and participated in Inherit Chicago, a monthlong citywide intercultural festival sponsored by the Chicago Cultural Alliance.

She was part of a list of three speakers: one Native American, one Filipino and Aydiner from Turkey. She spoke at “Migration Stories of Inheritance” at the Turkish American Society in Chicago. As the program for Aydiner’s speech said, “One of the most innate connections we as humans share is migration.”

Each speaker was followed by performers from that culture. The Turkish culture brought two teenagers girls singing covers of Turkish pop songs.

Aydiner, at 15, was the youngest of the speakers. Her speech was emotionally riveting to the group of about 40 in the room, and for her, too. She and audience members wiped away tears as the story ended.

Aydiner told the story of the day that her life turned upside down, when her father said they were going to have to leave.

“That night my dad came into my room and told me that it wasn’t going to be easy for us anymore, that we were going to face groundless accusations, that they might get arrested anytime like many innocent others for serving humanity,” she said.

Her family, including two brothers Esad,11, and Ali, 7, and her mother and father, Humeyra Aydiner and Mesut Aydiner, traveled by car and then by boat with mysterious people who smuggled them out of the country.

“They told us that we will pass the international water in 20 minutes, and after that, the coastguards can’t do anything.

And we’ll arrive to a beach after another 20 minutes without even getting wet, safely. Things didn’t go like they told us it would. Our number was eight in total with the other family, but the tiny speed boat that came to pick us up only had two crappy seats,” she said.

ing into the boat on her family as well as the other family that they were aboard with on the small boat. Cemal, the father of the other family on board, had to take action in order to save his baby’s life.

“After another half an hour, there was a rocky cove in our sight, and when the water was about here [7 feet deep], they told us to jump. First we didn’t, but when they threw our backpacks to the water, me and Cemal jumped and tried to reach the cove. After a while, my dad came next to us and so did my mom and brothers, but Cemal’s wife didn’t know what to do, so they threw the baby in the water. His wife jumped after. The boat left in a hurry leaving us in the middle of nowhere.”

Her journal in the single backpack she carried was now wet and soggy.

The pages were never same after being thrown into the water and after this experience. Aydiner herself was also wet

and cold and never the same.

Her family persevered over the rocky cove and made it into Greece to a hotel with their few belongings where they found safety.

“It was my turn to shower, but the phone in the room rang, and they told us the police are waiting downstairs. I had that feeling again. I was so scared.

I was the only one with fluent English, so my dad and I went downstairs. The police had the copies of our passports, and they told us that they wanted to help us.

They said they knew we illegally entered the country and we were from the Gulen movement. They told us that they knew what was happening in Turkey. They said they believed in us and they believed in democracy, how they were so surprised that a university president [Aydiner’s father] had left his country like this, so they said they’ll help us and they did. We took a flight to Athena, then Italy and at

last JFK [in New York]. All of our friends were waiting for us at the airport cheering,” she said.

Aydiner, currently a CFHS sophomore, has found her new home and embraces her new calm lifestyle.

“Now I live in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and I have amazing friends, an amazing school and teachers,” she told the audience in Chicago. “It’s a friendly, small college town over there that I’m not really used to after living in Istanbul for a long time, but now I am so in love that I don’t want to leave. I feel like we needed this calm life as a family after all the crazy stuff we went through.”

Just like Aydiner’s journal, her old stories and memories went through the wringer in her journey to America, but in Chicago, she again found the words to tell her story.

5 Women’s swim team headed to Regionals The

To prepare for Regionals at Linn Mar on Saturday, Oct. 28, the women’s swimming and diving team has actually been taking things a little slower.

As they start their taper: a process where yardage, intensity and volume of workouts and training is gradually decreased toward the end of the season, they’re able to look back and see that they have a lot working in their favor to make it to State.

They’ve beaten their own time for the 200 Free Relay and are ranked third in state right now with a time of 1:38.40.

That’s 0.4 seconds slower than Ankeny, and 2.05 seconds slower than Ames on the leaderboards, giving both teams a run for their money and showing that there is quite a bit of competition to be had at Regionals.

Olivia Clark, a senior varsity swimmer, holds five top times on the team this year in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Fly and 200 Individual Medley. Out of all the teams that compete in

the state, she is ranked third in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:07.68.

Sammi Hall, another senior varsity swimmer, currently holds the best times among the team this season in the 100 Back with a time of 1:01.27, and in the 200 Free with a time of 1:57.49.

Grace Considine, a junior varsity swimmer, holds the best time of the season on the team in the 500 Free with a time of 5:14.92.

As for diving, Madison Schoppe and Ashton Syharath are among the top five in the state in their respective category.

Football team kicks off against 8-1 Prairie in first round of playoffs tonight at Wartburg

After dismantling Waterloo East at home in the UNI Dome on Friday, Oct. 20, by a score of 66-0, Cedar Falls will take the field in Waverly on Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m.

Schoppe is ranked fifth in the 1 meter 6 dive score with a score of 269.4 and Syharath is ranked fourth in the 1 meter 11 dive score with a score of 439.75.

Right now as a whole, the team is sitting in the top 10 in power rankings in the state, making them a force to be reckoned with at Regionals this year.

The success of the team can be attributed to head coach, Mike Hagensick, and diving coach, Vic Laughlin. The hard work and dedication to the team doesn’t stop at the coaches though.

With a new group of freshman and a

bunch of experienced upperclassmen as well, athletes on the team are willing to give everything they have to make this year’s season a successful one.

Junior Ellie Shimp, a varsity swimmer for the team, said, “I think we’ll do good. We have a great group of swimmers this year, and we’re a lot more successful than last year. With how everyone on the team is swimming, we have a good chance at making it to State this year. Everyone’s been working hard, and now it’s going to payoff.”

Two new sports seeking participants

Junior introduces CF women to lacrosse With a smile plastered across her face, junior Marika Yang shuffled backward, her cleats cutting through the grass, her lacrosse stick in hand. A handful of her friends mimiced the motion beside her.

For last couple of years, Yang has been on a mission at Cedar Falls High School to organize a women’s lacrosse team: a vision that seems to finally be coming to life.

Lacrosse is a contact sport played with 11 players and a goalie on each team. The game is played by using a long stick with a net on the end — a lacrosse stick — to catch, cradle, pass and shoot a small rubber ball into the opposing team’s goal.

Originally played by indigenous people of North America, the sport has diffused around the world and is played by millions of people, including high school girls all over the United States.

However, when Yang relocated from Chicago to Cedar Falls three years ago, she was shocked that Cedar Falls was a place that lacrosse had not reached. No one had played it before, some had never heard of it and Yang encountered many misconceptions about the sport.

“I did not know much about it,” junior Dalilah Galvez-Rodriguez said. Galvez-Rodriguez tried lacrosse for the first time at the clinic after encouragement from Yang. “I knew there were sticks. I thought it would be more like field hockey, but it wasn’t.”

Yang, who began playing

lacrosse after friends in Chicago introduced her to the sport through a clinic, was left without any team to play the sport she loved. “I love lacrosse because it’s a great sport that involves a lot of personal goal setting and challenges that allow you to grow personally and as a team,” Yang said.

For Yang, organizing the lacrosse team is a goal that she hopes will not only benefit girls who decide to play, but the community as well. “I know that the girls involved [in lacrosse] will benefit greatly from the excitement and fun that come along with playing the sport,” Yang said, “and that people who start to watch will be able to share in that excitement and learn about something new. It’s all a big adventure.”

Because there is no women’s lacrosse team for Yang to play on in the Cedar Valley, she travels to West Des Moines every week to practice and play for

Elise Leasure Photos Meghan Gruver’s club team, the West Des Moines Tigers. Gruver, along with Wartburg women’s lacrosse head coach Anna Meerbach, aim to help Marika start a lacrosse team of her own, beginning with a clinic held at Birdsall Park.

“With their guidance I was able to host a clinic for girls interested in the sport, which led to more interest,” Yang said. “ I have since begun to recruit more girls who are interested in playing and helping fundraise, which will help bring the team to life.”

In 2016, junior Katelyn Walgren brought to gym teacher Paul Elser’s attention that she was interested in an archery team and was hoping that he would be on board.

“It’s (archery) been a big part of my family, so I thought it would be cool to try once I tried it before, but with the ending of my softball and volleyball careers, I figured I wanted to get out there again,” Walgren said.

Following her proposal, Elser acquired the correct equipment and got the word out. “I heard about this program through the DNR [Iowa Department of Natural Resources], and at the time

we had this PEP grant going on with extra money. I talked to administration about starting it,” Elser said.

Going into the team’s second year, the participants have hopes for competing. “It is the same season as basketball, so there is a little conflict as I do teach it and coach basketball, so I am looking for someone to help coach it,” Elser said.

As the program is not yet a school-sanctioned activity, it has also struggled with constant numbers while looking for volunteers to help run the program as fall is a busy season for Elser, and juggling archery and basketball

coaching will not be an easy task.

“We want to try to start competing, but we need a volunteer to take that and kind of run with it,” Elser said.

The team has goals of starting by competing against smaller surrounding schools with teams such as Jesup and Wapsie Valley while working its way up to qualify at state and even national levels.

“They have competitions between local schools, state, regional and national levels. They have one in Utah and another in Kentucky. You have to be pretty good. I don’t know if the kids are there yet, but if the kids want to

try, then they can,” Elser said.

They hope to get out and compete to determine their overall skill along with fueling the team for higher goals. “My big goal right now is go get us into some local competitions to see where my kids are at compared to their level of shooting,” Elser said. “I kind of have an idea as I compare it to scoring 50 every time, and some kids are pretty good. I think we need to go play another school to get a feel for what it is like to go through all the pieces.”

The score is determined by how close one shoots to a target at different 10- and 15-meter distances. “I like that it is a change from traditional sports,” Walgren said. “It’s more that everyone is there to have fun, and it is based as a team and as yourself.”

What sets archery different from other sports is that anyone can join. “The philosophy behind the program is that is is not about your equipment, it is about your skill,” Elser said. “This ‘ARCHERY’ Continued on Page 8

Williams’ cross country team heading to State The women’s cross country team placed second at Districts in Iowa City last Thursday, Oct. 19, landing the team a trip to the state meet on Oct. 28. Sophomore Mackenzie Michaels, senior Anna Hertz and senior Paige Kvale all qualified individually after placing in the top 15. Seniors Meg Schmitz, Caroline Ross, Madison Larson and junior Jessica Vandorn will all be competing for the team as well.

While the girls have been to the state meet before, this trip will be particularly special. Five of the seven athletes that make up the varsity team are seniors, making this the last race of their high school careers.

“It’s so weird,” Ross said.

“This group has been together as runners for six years now, and four of us seniors went to the same elementary and junior high, so a lot of us have known each other for close to 12 years now. It’s really weird to be coming up on our last race with them It just, it’s exciting and nerve racking and sad. There are a lot of feelings involved.”

Vandorn agreed. “It’s kind of scary. I don’t know who’s coming up next year, and these guys have been some of my best friends for the past few years, and I’m really going to miss them.”

“It makes me really sad that he’s going through this because you can see him forgetting things along the way that you know he wouldn’t normally forget, but he is just such a great person. He really cares about the girls, and he gets so excited on meet day. The smile that he has on his face when we all high five right before a race — he is so happy. It’s his element, and I’m going to miss that,” Hertz said.

Ross added that, “He just has such a joyful heart, and it’s really sad to see him go through this, but it’s also very inspiring to see how loving and caring he is despite the circumstances.”

Everyone will be learning and improving in their own ways, and we’ll be doing it as a team,” Yang said. “It’s going to be a blast, and the opportunity is such a great one when it comes to being a part of something very new in the state of Iowa.”

Yang’s friend and possibly future teammate, GalvezRodriguez, agreed after trying lacrosse for the first time at the clinic. “I loved that the majority of the girls there were like me.

They had never played, so I didn’t feel out of place,” GalvezRodriguez said. “It was really fun figuring it out together.”

Though the team is still growing, Yang said she hopes to spread the word and fundraise enough to field a team to play the two other high school lacrosse teams in Iowa

With the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, even though I feel very capable right now, I know that I could be putting the team at risk in the future if I continue, and assistant coach Amanda Johnson, who has been with us four years, is very capable of continuing our traditions,” he said.

“I would like to thank Bob Schmidt for inviting me to become a part of this awesome ride 28 years ago, and with the help of Gary Koenen, Troy Becker, Jane Carter, Betsy Schmitz, coach Johnson and especially the CF women’s XC team for making this year special for me.”

While the girls will miss running together as a team, they

will especially miss having Williams as a coach.

“It’s kind of nice having both of this be our last years. We can end it together and make the most of it together. I’m really glad that I got to spend my senior year with him,” Schmitz said.

On Saturday morning, the seven varsity girls will practice their strides on the starting line.

With their hair dyed red — a tradition for CF athletes attending women’s state cross country — Kvale will lead the girls in a team chant, followed by Larson leading a team prayer.

“One of the small things that I appreciate very much every year is seeing the girls in their final run out before every meet, huddle and pray together,” Williams said. “That means a lot to me. Another thing that has attracted new girls to come out for this very grueling sport is the attitude of encouragement. Everybody makes a difference. That seems to be expected and set as an

example by our leaders every season.”

The state cross country meet will take place this Saturday, Oct. 28 at 11 a.m. in Fort Dodge. Students can purchase pep bus tickets in the front office.

“My goals for the lacrosse team are to bring as many girls as possible into an exciting and memorable sport and to work on creating a team that is willing to put in the work to be successful,” Yang said. “I hope to accomplish creating a team that strives for the best and is determined in spreading the word about lacrosse and showing Iowa what the sport is all about.”

While the lacrosse season begins in the spring, Yang plans to have practices and clinics organized for this fall to teach her peers about the sport and how to play. Brandon Conrad Men’s Cross Country

How long have you been running cross country?

I’ve I have run cross country since ninth grade.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

My biggest accomplishment this year is finishing in the top seven in every race this season and consistently staying in the front pack.

What are some of your personal goals?

One of my personal goals is to finish in the top 15 at the state meet on Saturday, and also I want to break 16 minutes and finally get in the 15s because my personal record is 16:01, and I’m really close to breaking that 16-minute barrier.

What are some team goals?

Our team goal is to come back next year and finish in the top five at State. We didn’t make it to State as a team this year, but we’re going to bounce back and make it next year.

Any nerves for state?

Yes, I am nervous, but it helps that I ran at State last year, so I have experience of the course and the environment such as the crowd and how competitive the race is with the strong competition. I am a little nervous about the weather, though. I hope it doesn’t end up snowing because the weather is supposed to be in the low 30s.

Favorite memory?

My best memories are all of the runs with my teammates and the friends I have gained from running cross country.
