In one of many food drive events from last week, Associate Principal Gary Koenen volunteered to be duct taped to the wall during lunch. Students and staff paid $2 per strip for a chance to hold Koenen down. On Wednesday the third hour classes brought in food and on Monday, CF Pizza Huts donated a cut from their profits to the CF effort.

Band to host pancake breakfast fundraiser David Bergstrom Staff Writer

The band will be hosting a pancake breakfast on Oct. 27 in the Cedar Falls High School cafeteria. For $4, the community is invited to enjoy all the breakfast goods they can eat. “We will be having pancakes, sausage, juice, homemade treats and more available,” band director Kyle Engelhardt said. The band breakfast has had about 1,500 people attend in the past, and Engelhardt predicts the same amount this year. The money raised from ticket sales for the breakfast will be used to fund music programs in schools all over the Cedar Falls community. “The proceeds will be going to students grades five-12 to help repair their instruments, get new ones or other

various items their band may need,” Engelhardt said. Some money will be going to other schools as well as staying here for our school. “The band booster club will purchase more uniforms we may need, buy new instruments for us at the high school, repair any that we need to get fixed from over the year as well as making up for any loss in the budget that we have,” Engelhardt said. Engelhardt encourages everyone to support the schools in our area by attending the breakfast. Junior and CFHS band member Sarah Halloran said of last year’s breakfast, “We had a lot of fun and made a lot of money. We hope to do the same this year. “The sale will start at 6:30 a.m. and will finish at 1 p.m,” Engelhardt said.

The results are in for the 2007 All State Honor Band, Choir and Orchestra. Thirty-two CFHS students were selected along with five alternates. Students selected for these groups will perform with other talented Iowa musicians at the All State Festival on Nov. 17, 18 and 19 in Ames. The auditions were Saturday, Oct. 20 in Hampton, Iowa. It started out a bright and early morning. Choir students met at Alice Miller’s house at 4:45 for breakfast, then went to warm-up at Cedar Falls High School, then off to Hampton. The first audition started at 8 a.m. and the others followed until around 12:30 p.m. After auditioning, the students had to wait for hours to find out the results. The music students kept busy by playing cards, talking and practicing their music. Around 1:30, choir teacher Kendra Wohlert walked out with the recall list. Anxiously, students held their breaths to find out if they would recieve one last chance to prove themselves to the judges. Minutes later, the results were going to be posted. Hand in hand, the music students watched the scrolls fall. Students cheered and cried as they learned the news. “I am so excited. The entire quartet made it, which is very rare. I am way excited!” junior Natalie Takes said. Students accepted into All State choir were; Natalie Takes, soprano I, 2nd year; Ali Stoddard, soprano II, 1st year; Alice Miller, soprano II, 1st year; Emily Stortz, alto I, 3rd year; Daniel Veenstra, tenor I, 1st year; John Lantz, tenor I, 1st year; Eric Eichelberger, tenor II, 3rd year; Joe Fagersten, tenor II, 1st year; Sam Lilja, bass I, 1st year; Drake Edwards, bass II, 1st year; Kevin Hancock, bass II, 1st year; Rhys Talbot, bass II, 2nd year; and Derek Sutherland, alternate bass I. “It’s amazing, I can’t believe it.

Senior Noelle Tripolino, who recieved second chair position for the All State Honor Orchestra, practices harp during orchestra. It is very satisfying. I don’t think that it has all sunk in yet,” junior Joe Fagersten said. Orchestra students who were accepted were; Sarah Larsen, violin, 1st year; Riley Martin , violin, 1st year; Amelia Sutton, violin, 1st year; Hannah Howland violin, 1st year; Jennifer Hurban, viola, 2nd year; Noelle Tripolino, harp, 2nd year; Olivia Hahn, cello, 3rd year; Jacob Stoner, string bass, 1st year and Nina Savage, string bass, 4th year). Vanessa Horstman is first alternate violin. Senior Noelle Tripolino, who was accepted as second chair harp, had a different audition process. She had to record three exerpts and a solo, which were sent in a week before the others. ““Every year it varies, but for the last few years they have only accepted four harps; two for the orchestra and two for the band. I have never really thought much about the numbers, because I never see anyone else audition for the harp, since I am the only harp player at CF,” Tripolino said.

Band auditions also took place throughout the morning and afternoon. When the All State band scrolls fell, the reaction was the same. Band students who were accepted into the All State Band are Kavin Sundaram, flute, 3rd year; Molly Troendle, Flute, 2nd year; Elise Berry, oboe 1, 3rd year; Ellie Squires, bassoon 2, 1st year; Kiran Gustavson, clarinet 2, 3rd year; Bethany Olson, clarinet 3, 3rd year; Stephanie Koltookian, alto sax 1, 2nd year; Mark Lukasiewicz, tenor saxophone, 2nd year; Louis Redfern, Baritone Saxophone, 1st year (Holmes JH); Nadia Honary, french horn 1, 3rd year; Steve Ramsey, bass trombone, 1st year. Joe Sitta, 1st alternate trumpet; Michael Miller, 2nd alternate trumpet; Paul Strike, 2nd alternate trombone. All-State is one of the most difficult and demanding musical challenges of the year. It requires lots of practice. “It makes you a better player. Make it or not, it increases your musical ability,” band teacher Kyle Engelhardt said.
