CF places 37 musicians at All State festival

Isley captures first four-time percussion spot in CF history All school year, CFHS music students have been tirelessly preparing for All-State, the annual music festival run by the Iowa High School Music Association. This past Saturday, Oct. 26, these musicians auditioned for the IHSMA All-State Festival. This year, 37 students were accepted, and 10 alternates, who are also of All-State caliber and may be invited to participate if quotas were not filled in another district. In choir, 15 participants and four alternates were selected. The soprano participants are Lauren Harter, 1st year; Gigi Norby, 1st year and Libby Swartley, 1st year. Kelli Dekutoski is the soprano alternate. The alto participants are Lexi Banwart, 1st year; Sammone Jones, 2nd year and Kathryn

Wolff, 2nd year. Martha Hall is the Alto alternate. The Tenor participants are Joel Brich, 2nd year; Paul Bunker, 2nd year; Brian Keiser, 2nd year; Richie Korneisel, 1st year; Merlin MacGillivray, 1st year and Seth VanRoosendaal, 1st year. Anton Oelmann is the tenor alternate. The bass participants are Spencer Betts, 2nd year; Mitch Dekutoski, 1st year and Nathan Hall, 1st year. Tommy Truelsen is the bass alternate. In orchestra, 11 participants and one alternate were selected. Violin selections are Kelly Olsen (2nd year); Claire Chenoweth (2nd year) and Sarah Gao (2nd year). Violin Abigail Rowland is the 1st alternate. Viola participants are Yutao Su (2nd year); Anjah Droe (2nd year); Kailey Stiers (1st year) and

Alex Dou (1st year). Cello participants include Adrian Amjadi (2nd year), Alex Mong (1st year) and Olivia Fabos Martin (1st year). Bass participant is Ben Baker (1st year). Orchestra Scott Hall said that auditions went very well, and that all the students trying out did wonderful. “The students worked very hard for this audition,” he said. Beginning in August, Hall said, the students practiced individually and then met in groups weekly to prepare for the audition. In band, 11 participants and five alternates were selected. Baritone sax alternate is Brett Niemann. Flute participant is Jenna Veenstra, and the 2nd alternate is Rachel Ki. Trombone participant is Timothy Sevcik,

and the 1st Alternate is Michael Stow. French horn participant is Mary Anton. Trumpet participants are Isaac Smith, Anya Gedlinske, Srinu Dhanwada and 1st Alternate is Adam Tassett. Bassoon participant is Erik Cheng. Clarinet participants are Rachel Rose, Lexi Hahn and Lizzie Swanson. Percussion participant is Catherine Isley, the first four-year percussion participant in CFHS history, and 2nd alternate is Kyler Boss. Band Instructor Kyle Engelhardt said, “I was pleased with the amount of growth in musicality in all of the students, whether they were accepted or not. He noted that the students with have the opportunity to work with some outstanding conductors. “The students will

be among the ‘best of the best,’ and it’s fun to dig into the music on such a deep level,” Engelhardt said. Engelhardt was also impressed with Isley on becoming the first CFHS percussionist to make All-State all four years. He also noted the four ninth graders selected from Peet and Holmes Junior Highs. The 67th annual All-State Music Festival will be held in Ames Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 21-23. The concert at the end of the festival is on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University. Iowa Public Television will record the concert for re-broadcast.
