FFA volunteers at town s qu a re Written by Chloe Daniels This year it has been difficult for FFA to find projects to help the community or find competitions to go to. However, the group did volunteer for the City of Humboldt by helping to set up Christmas decorations around the square. All together FFA members helped put up almost 24 Christmas decorations.

“Helping out our community PHOTO BY JAYLYNN RENO shows what the FFA is all about,” FFA members set up Christmas Trenton Heisler, sr., said. “The FFA lights on the square. is full of hard working kids that are willing to do anything for their biggest supporters.”

The FFA program also fundraised this Fall with items from River Star Farms. They sold fruits, vegetables, meats and sweets.

Members use the money they raise to help with their travel expenses, entry fees to competitions, and any other expenses the organization might experience.

FFA normally has many competitions they go to in the Fall, including: FFA creed speaking, Greenhand conference, and many others. However, several of these have been forgone due to Covid-19.

Members of FFA did travel to this year’s Beef Expo Dec. 11, in Hutchinson. They have not received placings yet for this event.

Students who completed the introductory course for the pathway, Teaching as a Career, last year have moved on to the Teaching Internship course.

First year students learn about education theory. This year those introductory students have been able to observe classrooms through Zoom.

Members of the Internship course have the opportunity to work within a classroom at Humboldt Elementary School. The experience is similar to a student teaching experience one might have in college as the interns work with students and collaborate with their cooperating teachers for one hour, four days a week.

“As someone who wants to become a teacher, I feel as if interning at the elementary school really prepares me for what is to come,” Hagyn Barnow, sr., said. “I enjoy being able to help students and watch them grow alongside me. Being able to teach while also understanding what a teacher goes through every day is helping me learn how to handle difficult situations.”

Students reenact Civil War battle scenes Written by Jailynn Goforth In Scott Brady’s eighth grade history class, students got creative with Civil War projects where they created videos depicting different battles.

The Civil war project is a repeating assignment in Brady’s class, but this year it was done a little differently as students worked individually instead of with partners.

Kindergarten

Maggie Wyrick and Cara Thomas’ kindergarten classes celebrate the holidays by completing a “Tour the World” project.

The students pictured are lined up on the rug because they are “boarding the airplane” to fly to Holland. In Holland, one of their holiday traditions is to follow clues to find gifts. The students did this tradition within the classroom and followed clues to find their gift, a sweet treat.

During the project, students “traveled” to five different countries and studied various kinds of holiday traditions celebrated around the world.

Thomas and Wyrick helped the students study the different cultures and even had students participate in some of the traditions within the classroom.

The kids enjoy pretending to fly on planes to the different countries and learning about all of the holiday traditions.

Written by Jailynn Goforth Corinna Adams’ third grade class has been celebrating the 12 days of Christmas. Each day, they have a new theme where they learn about a holiday tradition or festivity and then complete a craft that goes along with it.

For the third day of the 12 days of Christmas, the students began learning about gingerbread houses.

They learned all about where the tradition originated and the different kinds of gingerbread houses.

After learning about the tradition, students made their own gingerbread creations with candies, frosting, and graham crackers.

STUDENT ONE has been playing traveling softball for around five years for High Octane and high school softball for one. Her position on her traveling team is second base.

“One of my favorite things about our team is having summer swim parties as we welcome new team members and say goodbye to others,” Student One said.

Though she said she would not consider herself to be superstitious, she did mention how she stands with her left foot slightly in front of her right during games.

“Our team doesn’t have a lot of traditions, but, after every out we pass the softball around the entire field to congratulate our teammates and celebrate our small victories,” Student One said. “My favorite memory, by far, has to be when our team’s first baseman did the splits in the middle of one of our games.”

Student One hopes to attend Pittsburg State University on a softball scholarship.

STUDENT TWO is an avid hunter. He enjoys rifle hunting deer most, but also enjoys the challenge of bow hunting.

While he does not often enjoy the usual early morning hunts, he makes an effort to hunt anyway.

One of Student Two’s hunting traditions is going to Western Kansas on an annual pheasant hunting trip with his grandpa and dad.

“My favorite memory from hunting is probably the time a group of people walked onto our land while my father and I were deer hunting,” Student Two said. “They had walked in from the road and had unfortunately found their way to our deer stand.”

“I have never seen my dad become so angry that quickly. As they ran out of the woods my dad sprinted about half a mile to the truck with me right behind. We cut them off where they had parked and after talking to them, found out they had just accidentally gone on the wrong side of the bridge because of bad directions.”

Student Two plans to continue hunting until he am no longer able to hunt.

A season inside

Girls get ready with perfection Written By: Peyten Galloway

The girls basketball season started Nov. 16 with their first day of practice and their first game was Dec. 4.

The team has 11 girls total, six being returners and five newcomers. Returning are Jada Dangerfield, sr., Zoey Wilson, sr., Jessica Myers, sr., Kirstyn Murrow, jr., Carsyn Haviland, so., and Karley Wools, so. New players added to the team include Isabelle Murrow, sr., Brooklyn Ellis, jr., Danica Modlin, fr., Assya Goforth, fr., and Kenisyn Hottenstein, fr.

Since they are short players and lost their top scorer from last year, the team will have to work twice as hard as anybody else this year.

“Our main goal this season

is our typical, we want to be competitive, mentally tough, and a hard-nosed team,” Head Coach Aubrey Jones said.

Due to Covid-19, KSHSAA added new guidelines. Each participant is allowed two parents/guardians to attend the games and the no play time during Christmas break was extended. There will be live streams of games so people from home are able to watch.

“I am just grateful to be playing,” Jada Dangerfield, sr., said. “The fans aren’t what make basketball what it is.

Do they add the fun? Yes! But I don’t mind them not being there; in fact, I will be able to hear Coach J yelling at me a lot better now so I am only gaining from this.”

Boys practice ball handling Written By: Chloe Daniels The boys basketball team looks to improve on their 13-8 record from last year. The team has several returners including: Drake Harrington, sr., Thane Meadows, sr., Sam Neeley, sr., Drew Wilhite, jr., Gavin Page, jr., Levi McGowen, jr., Colton Slocum, jr., Evan Lucke, jr., Zach McDown, so., and Trey Sommer, so.

The team also has incoming freshman to add to the team; they are: Caden Vink, Jordan White and Mateo Miller.

“Being a freshman, I feel like it is putting a lot of pressure on me because I’m the new kid,” Jordan White,

fr., said. “I feel like all of the other people on the team are watching how I play.”

The Cubs are hoping for a winning season but know they must put in effort to get there. They hope to improve on rebounding and shooting.

“I look to improve on my leadership and teamwork skills,” Thane Meadows, sr., said. “It’s not always about me on the court and including as many people as I can to get the point is what I strive for.”

Every year the team hopes to make it to the State tournament, but if that can not be accomplished they hope to play each game to their best ability.

Athletes wrap up Fall seasons Football

Written By: Leah Mueller With their sea son coming to an end, the Cubs traveled to O sage City to take on the Indians. Humboldt ended up losing with a score of 8 -39.

The HHS football sea son wa s cut short due to a COVID -19 outbreak in the district. The team would have played another home game, but they were unable to do so because of being quarantined .

“Coming into this year I had high hopes for the team, but sadly we suffered many inj uries that brought us down and put us

behind where we could have been at the end of the sea son,” Brennen Nues sen, so., said .

Although the team did not get to finish the year like they had hoped, they had an award s ceremony to celebrate the team’s accomplishments throughout the year.

“I wa s really excited coming into this year after watching everyone practice so hard during the Summer; but even after we were set back due to several inj uries, the team did great and made me very proud to be their teammate,” River Kaufman, so., said .

Volleyball

Written By: Jaylynn Reno With an end to their season, the Lady Cubs had a 21-13 win-loss record. The ladies season ended at Substate Oct. 24.

“Our team grew so much; we all worked together and played hard,” Jessica Myers, sr., said. “People stepped up when we needed them to. I am so glad that I got to play with that squad, even if it wasn’t an ideal situation.”

When we last left off, the Lady Cubs played a tournament at Neodesha, Oct. 17.

Playing against Caney,

Parsons, Neodesha and Baxter Springs, the Lady Cubs finished with a 1-3 record for the day.

The team ended their regular season with two wins against Fredonia and Bluestem, making them CoLeague Champions.

The Lady Cubs traveled to Uniontown Oct. 24, to compete in Substate. The girls played against St. Paul and won in three sets.

Then their season came to an end when they went head-to-head with Colgan and lost 0-2.

“It was sad to lose to Colgan, but we fought hard,” Jailynn Goforth, sr., said.

Loaded with many new wrestlers, the HHS wrestling team is beyond ready to take on this year’s season. There are some big changes and restrictions this year due to Covid-19. The wrestlers are able to start their season with all the scheduled meets, but they could be canceled at any time. Spectators at meets will also be restricted to two parents/guardians of each wrestler. All meets will be live-streamed.

“I am really looking forward to this year and think I will do really well,” Anna Goforth, jr., said. “Some of the restrictions are unfortunate, but I think they’ve done a good job considering wrestling is a dangerous sport especially during this time.”

This wrestling season the team gained 12 new athletes and has nine returning athletes. The nine who are returning this season are: Clay Shannon, sr., Ethan Doepke, jr., Colton Johnson, jr., Andrew Watts, jr., Anna

Goforth, jr., Maddox Johnson, so., River Kaufman, so., Brennen Nuessen, so., and Dakota Slocum, so. New athletes that joined the team are Madison Riebel, sr., Gabi Jackson, sr., Drew Council, jr., Morgan Sterling, so., Morgan Hunter, so., Leah Mueller, so., Elizabeth Melendez, so., Sam Hull, fr., Garren Goodner, fr., Byron Westbrook, fr., and Elizabeth White, fr.

“I feel really good about this year as a senior, and I hope to make it to State,” Clay Shannon, sr., said.

With a couple weeks of practice under their belts, the wrestlers are preparing for a season full of meets. Their meets were scheduled to start in the beginning of December and go through the end of February.

The Cubs first meet was Dec. 1 was a jamboree in Cherryvale. Later that week the team was scheduled to go to Leon-Bluestem and Caney but both meets were canceled earlier in the week due to quarantines related to Covid-19.

Students take part in sports outside of School Written By Ashlyn Bartlett Many students participate in sports outside of school. Many who do have to balance regular school work and outside sports; this tells a lot about their character.

Some students have been doing outside sports for years, and it is now a daily part of their lives.

There is a variety of sports a person could choose from and Emma B’Hymer is one of the very few who has chosen to competitively swim. B’Hymer has been participating in competitive swimming for eight years in Parsons and Sports Feature

Independence. Her competitions are, at most, 500 meters or 20 laps. She has swum for the All Star Swim Club, Parsons Dolphins, and the Chanute Sharks over the years.

When someone thinks of a rodeo they might think of someone doing it as a sport, especially as a high schooler, but Clay Shannon,sr., has competed in rodeo since age five. He participates in bronc riding and plans to pursue rodeo in college at Fort Scott Community College next year.

“Going to High School Nationals as a freshman has been my favorite memory,” Shannon said.

In addition to the previously mentioned changes, some had to make a change in Thanksgiving plans due to being quarantined .

“It wa s really sad hearing everyone sitting together at the dinner table while I wa s quarantined, but I’m glad I could Zoom in,” Cami Woo d, sr., said .

With Christma s coming up next week, people are facing some of the same challenges they encountered for Thanksgiving.

Students might not get to see their grandparents, cousins, or even siblings. In addition, travel restrictions are gaining momentum again with the spike in ca ses, making it even more difficult to reach family in different parts of the country, and especially oversea s.

Despite these difficulties, people are still planning to enj oy the holidays, even though they might look a bit different than in years pa st.

Which holiday has better food?

Thanksgiving has the best food compared to any other holiday. We all know the best part of Thanksgiving is the pumpkin pie and the mashed potatoes. There is no better feeling than to see all of your family members sitting around talking about life with smiles on their faces.

Besides the food being so good, the sheer amount of food available easily makes Thanksgiving dinner the best meal of the year.

And if that is not enough reason, just soak in the atmosphere of Thanksgiving that celebrates being joyful and enjoying a good meal.

Thanksgiving Food OR Christmas food

Christmas food is better compared to Thanksgiving food because it has the best family meals, and its food lasts all day and in to the evening. At Christmastime everyone pulls out their traditional family recipes, especially the ham.

I enjoy eating ham for Christmas instead of the traditional Thanksgiving turkey; plus, at Christmas sides like mashed potatoes are plentiful, but the food does not stop with dinner.

At the end of the night, “Home Alone” or some other Christmas movie gets dragged out, and we all gather around with some nice hot cocoa and chocolate pretzels that we made earlier in the day. We all cuddle up in our nice warm blankets and finish our sweets and movie for a nice, relaxed evening.

Thanksgiving food is better Written By: Addison Hart Our editorial board prefers what is traditionally offered as a meal at Thanksgiving compared to Christmas because there are more options and a bigger quantity of food to choose from and stuff themselves with.

They just can not resist the abundance of turkey, mashed potatoes, and vegetable casseroles along with the vast array of desserts, including pies.

While many of them did not get to eat Thanksgiving dinner with anyone other than their immediate family, they still were able to enjoy some traditional Thanksgiving food that they believe is the best and most filling meal of the year.

Eighty students were surveyed to obtain these results.

Commercial advertising will be printed, but items and/ or services that are illegal because of age restrictions, etc., will not be advertised.

Cub Tracks is a public forum. Since school publications are designed as instructional instruments for students and as a vehicle for student opinion and discussion, the opinions, issues, or articles published shall not be construed as those representing the publication adviser, school administration, or the Board of Education. The contents of the Cub Tracks is the responsibility of the student staff. Get in touch with The Cub Tracks Staff in Room 208 of HHS. 1. Letters should be submitted to Room 208 at 1020 New York Street, Humboldt, KS 66748 or given to any staff member listed no later than the Friday of the week prior to publication.

2. All letters must be signed, even though the name(s) may be withheld upon request of the writer. Names will be made available, however, to the publications adviser, editorin-chief, and necessary staff members from Room 208.

3. A joint letter should not contain more than ten names. If more than ten names appear on the letter, only ten will be published. However, a complete list of all other names will be available to the publications adviser, editor-in-chief, and necessary staff members within Room 208.

4. Each letter should be no more than 200 words in length and will be subject to editing and/or cutting. Should editing or cutting be required, the writer will be notified before publication. Cub Tracks also reserves the right to refuse publication.

The writer, however, will be notified of such a decision.

5. Obscene, libelous, or other material that might be determined to cause a disruption of the normal school daily routine will not be printed, and the writer will be notified of such a decision.

Modlin’s famous Thanksgiving Dish Cheesy Corn Ingre dients: -sweet corn (2 cans or 8 ears) -Velveeta (8 oz) -cream cheese (4 oz) -butter (3 Tbsp) -minced garlic (2 tsp) - diced ham (1/3 lb) Di rection s: -Over medium heat, add corn, Velveeta, cream cheese, butter and garlic. Stir until melted.

-Stir in ham.

-Serve in casserole dish or slow cooker to keep warm.

Supplies -hot glue -5 small, similar-sized twigs -decorative twine Step 1:Find your five small, similar-sized twigs and glue them together in to the shape of a star.

Step 2: Once your glue dries, take your decorative twine and wrap it around all the points; then make a loop for hanging on the Christmas tree.

Dandelion Wine, relaxing read by Bradbury Written by Anya Woods Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury is excellent for casual readers. This book is great for a relaxing read. Bradbury can be agitating to read for long periods of time because of the writing style he displays, in which he meticulously describes everything.

The book follows a young man, Douglas Spaulding, throughout his Summer.

Spaulding narrates his experience with emotion and the voice he gives the story is unmistakable.

It is a description of youth and the condition of mind that

follows youth. It details the unique feeling of Summer as a child.

In this aspect, the book is exceptional. The story seems to have come from the mind of a child in a very refreshing way.

This is one of Bradbury’s best pieces to date as it does not focus so much on this description as his other works; however, it does on some small aspects. The general story is relatively calm.

The plot is not attempting any ground-breaking literary aspects and, for Bradbury, this is perfect. His other works with few ground-breaking ideas were

not his strong suit.

This book is absolutely perfect for those who read as a relaxing pastime. In fact, all of Bradbury’s works are perfect for a casual reader. The use of simple literary elements and the bluntness of the tone are relaxing and easy to understand without talking down to the reader.

I recommend this book to people who enjoy a relaxing read, while having a good story the plot is quite slow-paced. It is easy to follow yet takes the reader on a unique journey of a young man’s Summer.
