Thankfully, times are changing, and this Black History Month, we’re reflecting on the RIP Dwayne Haskins 1997 2022 Thank You T-shirt moreover I love this Black creative vanguard defining a new age of furniture, decorative objects, and ceramics across the globe. Many take cues from traditional African, or Afro-diasporic, forms and techniques. Some, like Ross, are remarkably young (one maker on this list is a mere 21 years old). Yet all are united in pushing their mediums forward. New York-based Dina Nur Satti’s company, Nur Ceramics, gets its name from both the artist’s middle moniker and the Sufi belief that light can be reflected through one’s shadow. That idea sets the tone for her ceramics, which honor Eastern African cultural traditions (the Somali-Sudanese artist, who was born in Chad and partially grew up in Kenya, has spent extensive time observing the use of clay pots in ceremonies) as well as feminine motifs of the region’s landscape. Yet despite her ancient inspirations, Satti’s designs still reflect the modern aesthetics of her current reality as a millennial in Brooklyn—proving that good design transcends both time and geography. Recently, Satti was also chosen to be part of Saint Heron’s 2022 Ceramics Residency Program.
