Your giving saves lives
When COVID-19 affected our region, Huntington Hospital was faced with the unprecedented challenges of a global health emergency. Our community quickly stepped up in a big way to help us. Generous philanthropic gifts to our COVID-19 Response Fund have enabled us to treat patients with the virus and help keep our community as safe and healthy as possible.
In the early stages of the pandemic, OB-GYN Joseph Li, MD, was diagnosed with COVID-19. After having a fever for a few days, he began coughing. Then, feeling worse, he came to our emergency department for care. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Li is a member of our medical staff, but he did not contract the virus at the hospital. He did, however, become one of the first COVID-19 patients admitted for inpatient care here. His condition became very grave, and he was placed on a ventilator. “He was very sick,” says Harry Bowles, MD, chief of medical staff. “I think people were quite concerned he might not make it, and that would have been devastating.” Thanks to the expert care provided by Steven Pavkovic, MD, along with other
Huntington Hospital caregivers, including infectious disease specialist Kimberly
Shriner, MD, Dr. Li pulled through and is now fully recovered. “If I say I owe my life to Huntington Hospital,” he says, “that’s understating the kind of care I received.
I thank all the people who took care of me; thank you for bringing me back.”
“It’s super-important for everybody to remember that this is a very, very serious disease,” says Dr. Shriner. “It’s great to know that local donors are right here with us,” she adds, “helping to bring the best of care to every patient with this virus.”
