Volunteers giving back

Volunteers giving back.

This past spring, in-person volunteering at Huntington Hospital was temporarily put on hold, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While our dedicated volunteers have been unable to carry out their work on campus during this time, they have continued to show their generosity of spirit in several ways. Many have been working to create high-quality face masks, which they have donated for use by non-clinical staff. “Given their work, these staff members don’t need to wear medical-grade masks,” says Stacy Miller, director of volunteer services. Handmade masks are also distributed to clinical staff to wear outside the hospital. “They love knowing our volunteers are thinking about them,” she adds, “and being able to wear something other than a surgical mask when not at work.”

Other volunteers have made and donated ear savers to the hospital. “Ear savers help make wearing a mask more comfortable,” explains Stacy, “so these gifts are very meaningful for caregivers who work long shifts.”

The creative involvement of our volunteers does not stop there: Many have also made beautiful hand-painted cards to share with our patients and our frontline heroes.

“At a time when supplies and materials can be difficult to get, the kindness of our volunteers is much appreciated,” says Stacy. “We are beyond grateful!
