A NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE This nationally significant historic attraction has been delivering educational programs to the school community for over 50 years. We are proud to offer you and your students some of the most outstanding educational opportunities available in the province of Ontario. Tours of the historic site, along with interactive education programs, deepen students’ learning outside of the classroom. All education programs at Sainte-Marie link with the 2018 Ontario Curriculum. In addition to relevant content, programs make use of the Concepts of Disciplinary Thinking such as Continuity and Change and Cause and Consequence. At Sainte-Marie students have the opportunity to engage in Social Studies and History in a way that gets them thinking about people, places, and ideas. www.hhp.on.ca

Primary Students Half Day Programs EARLY PEOPLES IN HURONIA Interactive Tour

Students follow in the footsteps of Ontario’s first European settlers and learn how the Wendat people came to influence the lives of the newcomers. Students are encouraged to compare the life and culture of the French missionaries and Wendat people, to their own lives. Ontario’s first European community provides the setting for a visit your class will not soon forget.

THE THREE SISTERS Tour & Activities

Students experience another lifetime when they tour Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, and learn about Ontario’s earliest European settlers and the Wendat people. They are introduced to the ‘three sisters’ (corn, beans and squash), and learn how the Wendat taught the French to grow these crops in mounds.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

National Indigenous Peoples Day Free-flow program

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time for all Canadians to celebrate the cultures and contributions of Indigenous Peoples, to Canada. Canada chose this date because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice and because many indigenous groups mark this day to celebrate their heritage.

Cooperative Full Day Program with Martyrs’ Shrine WALK WHERE THEY WALKED Religious Focus

5 hours* $12.00**

Walk Where They Walked is a full-day pilgrimage experience developed for both elementary and high school students in the Roman Catholic separate school boards of Ontario. At Sainte-Marie, a specialized tour of the historic site will highlight important historical elements related to the life of St. Jean de Brébeuf, the story of ‘First Contact’ between the French missionaries and the Wendat people, and daily life at Sainte-Marie. At Martyrs’ Shrine, students will have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of the Canadian Martyrs. Their experience begins with the film: “Martyrs’ Shrine: A Home of Peace”. This will be followed by a presentation given by a Jesuit Priest integrating aspects of the lives of the Canadian Martyrs into the reality of Christian life today. We invite you to take part in a spiritual journey... and to walk where they walked. *2.5 hours morning, lunch break, 2.5 hours afternoon **$6 at Martyr’s Shrine and $6 at Sainte-Marie

Cooperative Full Day Program with Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre TWO PEOPLES: ONE PATH Joint program with Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre

5 hours* $12.00**

During this full-day program in conjunction with Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre, participants will learn how people were influenced by the environment and how they adapted to it in order to survive. Participants will experience first-hand what it took for both the Wendat and the French to survive in the Wye Valley over four centuries ago. At Sainte-Marie, students will compare European and Wendat diets, explore the challenges of bringing livestock and European technologies into the region, and how the waterway system might have been used. Students will learn of the importance of games such as Lacrosse, in the Wendat Culture, as a way of keeping warriors fit for battle, and of solving disputes between villages. At the Wye Marsh participants will learn how knowledge of the natural environment can contribute to the survival of all species, including humankind.

The Winter in Wendake program at Sainte-Marie lets participants experience the interactions of the French missionaries and the Wendat during the winter season. Students study the roots of the French Jesuit community, and learn about the contributions of Indigenous people to the development of Canada. Students will use an Indigenous invention to walk across the snow during a historical snowshoe hike, and participate in a number of hands-on activities.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • • • • •

The Moon of Wintertime Live-in program offers an unforgettable 24 or 48 hour journey into a 17th century winter at Sainte-Marie. Single classes enjoy their own curriculum-based historical visit. • For the cooperative programs with Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre and Marytrs’ Shrine, please pay your admission fees separately at each site.

Cancellations • Cancellations can be made up to 10 weekdays in advance.

Weather • If your school is closed due to severe weather conditions, please notify us at 705-526-7838. • Please ensure that students dress for the weather and the outdoors.

The smoke my irritate visitors with respiratory problems. Visitors are encouraged to move to doorways, windows and other areas with fresh air.

A NAVAL AND MILITARY OUTPOST Discovery Harbour traces its roots back to the original British naval and military base in Penetanguishene, built to safeguard access to Upper Canada after the War of 1812. Education programs at Discovery Harbour meet the requirements of the 2018 Ontario Curriculum. The inquiry process is used to explore life in Canada in the first half of the nineteenth century. Through tours and activities, students at all grade levels will gather information, ask questions, evaluate the information, and communicate their findings as they explore early settlement in Upper Canada and the significance of the War of 1812. www.hhp.on.ca

The years following the War of 1812 saw an uneasy peace between British Canada and the United States. In this activity-based tour of Penetanguishene’s Naval and Military base students learn the challenges faced by sailors, soldiers and settlers at a frontier outpost.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • • • • • •

THROUGH A SETTLER’S EYES: LIFE IN UPPER CANADA

In learning about historic forms of transportation, cooking, toys and games, students examine similarities and differences between daily life today and daily life two centuries ago in Upper Canada.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • Tour the Historic Site • Historic Cooking • Historic Games (hoop and stick, quoit toss, snakes and ladder, devil among the tailors) • Clothspin Soldier or Lady • Visit the wharf and tall ships

Other highlights of these fun and interactive programs include visiting the preserved original hull of the transport ship H.M.S. Tecumseth, and boarding our full scale replica of this historic vessel.

Students are thrust into historic Upper Canada, fighting for its survival during the War of 1812, where control of the waters is essential to ensure the transport of necessary troops and supplies, and a crucial naval battle is about to be fought on Lake Erie, at Put-In Bay.

What was life like for the regular soldiers fighting to defend Upper Canada during the War of 1812? Students experience first-hand the hardships and privations as well as the skills and knowledge that went along with being a “lobsterback” in the British Army.

WINTER IN UPPER CANADA This dynamic program offers students the opportunity to experience first-hand many facets of the daily life of the soldiers, sailors, settlers and Métis who lived and worked at a remote 19th century naval and military base. Working with our experienced program staff, teachers can customize a curriculumrelated historical visit for their class, involving a mix of indoor and outdoor historical activities and workshops. These are designated as Large Group (full class) Half-Group (split class) or Small Group (partial class). Many of the Small Group workshops include a take-home project for students. Our roster of workshop activities varies, and teachers should consult with the program staff to ensure availability.  PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS • Large Group activities can include: Snowshoeing. • Half-Group activities can include: Soldiers’ Drill, Historic Games and a tour of the Original Officers’ Quarters. • Small Group workshops can include: Historic Cooking, Making a Haversack, Ropework and Making a Rope Belt, the Lake Erie Battle Game - and more. • Black Powder Demonstrations (availability and weather permitting).

Program components can be arranged for a 48-hour visit or a 24-hour visit. For those unable to take on an overnight stay with us, a daytime program of up to 5 hours is also available. *Cost of programs does not include meals.

Programs can be tailored for Secondary School levels and ESL students.

• An online Booking Request form is available on our website: hhp.on.ca • Your booking is confirmed when you receive a confirmation letter with a reservation number.

Chaperone Ratio

(teacher, parent, supervisor) 1 free adult per 5 students - JK to Grade 3 1 free adult per 10 students - Grades 4 and up • Adults / Supervisors in excess of the above ratio will be charged the single admission rate for the program they are attending.

Payment • Admission payable on arrival by cash or separate cheque at EACH site. Alternative payment options are available including: VISA, MasterCard, Interac or by invoice. • Base minimum charge: 20 for all Education Programs and Community Groups. • Cheque payable to the Minister of Finance.

• Cancellations made after the deadline (and are unable to re-schedule), will be charged our minimum booking fee (cost of the the program, based upon 20 participants).

Revisions • We schedule our regular and on-call staff specifically for your group’s visit, based on the number of students confirmed. • Consequently, please advise us of significant changes in your numbers at least 10 days prior to your visit (i.e. 10 or more fewer students than confirmed). • If fewer students attend and NO advance notification is given, the group may be charged for the original number booked.

Arrival • Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled program time, if possible (this allows for a washroom stop before program begins). • Tour groups who arrive late may be moved directly to their on-time tour position and lost time may not be recovered.

Assistance • The site, washrooms and restaurant are wheelchair accessible. • Students and teachers may use their own personal assistive devices or bring service animals. • Wheelchairs are available on a first come, first served basis. • We are able to adapt our programs to accommodate students with disabilities. Please notify us at in advance with any special needs. • Support person for children with disabilities will be admitted free. • Allergy Alert: Discovery Harbour is NOT A PEANUT FREE environment. • Smoke Advisory: The historic site may have burning camp fires, both outdoors and in buildings. The smoke my irritate visitors with respiratory problems. Visitors are encouraged to move to doorways, windows and other areas with fresh air.
