Silver Linings

2,024 Volunteer Hours

“We are the silver lining in any and every dark cloud we could ever find. There is no need to go looking for the light when you bring it with you.”

Reflecting on 2021 – yet another year of navigating the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, it feels good to remember all the positive things that happened. While it seems human nature to focus on the challenges our community has faced, there have been many silver linings. I am excited to share this annual report with you celebrating the impact of this organization, not only sustaining but doing more! Because we believe everyone deserves the best hospice and palliative care available, we increased our educational outreach and our conversations with patients, their families, and physicians, sharing with them all the ways we can help. We offer compassion and answers, and a comforting path for many struggling with end-of-life issues or the symptoms and side effects of illness and treatment. We continue to see how great the need is for our care. Our Hospice teams had the honor of serving 1,125 patients during 2021, more than any previous year in our history. Our Palliative Care teams focused on improving the quality of life for 445 patients and introduced them to advanced care planning so they could outline a plan reflecting their wishes. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we added a new security video intercom and automatic front doors at our Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence. These systems increase security at the residence, especially after hours, and provide easier access for patients and family members with physical challenges.

We were excited to introduce an art therapy program in 2021. Hospice patients now have the opportunity to explore their feelings and communicate using a variety of art media from colored markers to paint and clay. The process gives both patients and families creative new ways to engage their mind, body and spirit, to build bridges, and to share with each other their thoughts and feelings, especially when words fail them.

Our concern for your safety and that of our patients, families and staff continues to be a priority. We are proud that Harbor Hospice requires all staff and volunteers to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19.
