What is the Common Core State Standards Initiative?  The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers to create a framework of educational standards that will better prepare our students for college and career. http://www.corestandards.org/about-the-standards

What does the Common Core State Standards Initiative aim to do?  Define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education  Establish clear educational standards for Mathematics and ELA & Literacy in History/Social Studies, Science and Technical Subjects  Emphasize the importance of literacy and the instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening and language across the content areas http://www.corestandards.org/about-the-standards

Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History, Science & Technical Subjects College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards for Reading Key Ideas and Details 1. Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from text 2. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas 3. Analyze how and why individuals, events or ideas develop and interact over the course of a text
