I recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. Strong and ask him to reflect on his first year as principal of Hills East, as well as his plans for the upcoming school year and beyond. Thank you so much Dr. Strong for taking the time to meet with me and for doing so much already to continue making HSE an amazing place.

DS: My first year as principal went by so quickly, and it really made me realize how quickly high school flies by. Enjoy your time; we have a tendency to always look

Thunderbird: The biggest change we’ve seen already this school year came during Homecoming. What did you think of the updated format for this year’s pep rally/tailgate/homecoming events? Dr. Strong: I thought it was very exciting. This year we’re trying to improve student turnout. The pep rally was enjoyed by the students and faculty, and it was great to see generated excitement down at the game. We had about 600 people at the game, so our goal to improve student turnout was met. I think, overall, that it worked, and it is something we want to continue in the future. The amazing afternoon even ended with a Thunderbird win against Copiague!

such as remind, the new school website, and learning management systems. At the high school level, with an increase in technology, we see more communication with student to teacher and advisor to student. Moving forward, it is a great tool that we are looking forward to continuing to provide and improving for our students! TB: Let’s conclude with some simple get to know you for our readers! What is your favorite food? DS: Pizza! I have my favorite spots around the area, and when I travel outside of New York, the pizza never tastes the same! It is definitely a family favorite. TB: How about your favorite vacation spot? DS: Anywhere with a beach and the sun! TB: What can we catch you watching when you have a few free moments to relax? DS: Law and Order TB: Last, but certainly not least, what is your favorite sports team? DS: The New York Yankees

TB: What are some of your goals for this year? DS: My goal is to make Hills East the best place possible. Coming in last year, I had to remind myself that Hills East is a tremendous building, and it was definitely an adjustment. I was so lucky to come into a place that was so strongly established and filled with students doing outstanding things in terms of academics, athletics, and the arts. One of my goals is to continue to provide opportunities for the students. This includes updating various parts of the building, such as the Student Center and computer labs, to make the space more exciting and current for the students.

Freshmen Find Their Way at HSE Staff Writers

Our first few weeks as freshmen at High School East were definitely interesting and not what we anticipated. Unexpectedly, we were much more excited than we were nervous to enter high school for the first time. We were thrilled to be learning in a new school environment and even more excited to make memories that will last a lifetime. However, one of the aspects that we were hesitant about when entering high school was the overall size of the school. Because of the thousands

of students and faculty here at High School East, the building is massive and is many times the size of our previous school, West Hollow. From what we had heard, locating our classes and becoming familiar with the school was something that would take a few weeks to accomplish. Thankfully, the upperclassmen of the school and the teachers were all extremely helpful in navigating us through the building. We were able to find our classes without being late which gave us confidence that we would be able to make it on time for the rest of the year!

We are very lucky to go to a school that offers so many clubs and activities. Each year, the list of clubs continues to grow providing even more opportunity for students to explore their interests outside of the classroom. Two new additions for this school year are the Math Honor Society and the Jewish Heritage Club. Math Honor Society is the perfect club for all math enthusiasts at High School East. The club advisor is Mrs. Liegey, a math teacher here at HSE. The club meets on Fridays from 2:00- 3:00 pm in room 732. This honor society recognizes students who attain great mathematical achievement. In order to be a member of the club, all students must maintain a 90 average in math and achieve at least a 90 on all three New York State Mathematics Regents exams, specifically the Algebra I Regents, the Geometry Regents, and the Algebra II Regents. In order to be a part of this honor society, you also must have completed all three of these courses, so depending whether you took Algebra I in 8th grade, you can join as a junior or if you took Algebra I as a freshman, you can join as a senior. Another requirement of the club is to have participated in either Mathletes, Math Fair, AMC, or SCMC. The organization also provides math support to students in our commu-

nity and school. The Math Honor Society is an amazing addition to the High School East extracurricular offerings and is definitely something to get involved in if you have a passion for math. The Jewish Heritage Club is another great club to get involved in. The club advisor is Ms. Blitzer, and the club meets on Tuesdays from 2:15- 3:15 pm in room 902. The club will explore and inform students about the many interesting and important facets of the Jewish culture. The club will help students get a better understanding of this culture and the many fascinating aspects of it. They will experience the food, dance, and music of the Jewish community. This club is open to everybody in the Hills East student body; you do not have to be Jewish to join! Learning about new cultures is crucial to being an understanding citizen and broadening one’s horizons. If you aren’t interested in these two specific clubs, keep exploring! There are so many offered that you are sure to find something you’ll enjoy. Clubs are a great way to meet new people and to make an impact in your community. If you want to find more information on all of the activities offered at High School East, go on to our districts website and find the tab under High School East entitled “Clubs and Activities.”

Republicans Expand Senate Majority as Democrats Gain Control of House

Carson Leifer

World News & Op/Ed Editor

In perhaps the most anticipated Midterm Election in decades, both Republicans and Democrats have walked away proclaiming victory for their sides. For the first time since 2010, the Democratic Party will be the majority party in the House of Representatives, dealing a major setback to President Trump and his legislative agenda. Democrats also won at least seven governorships in states previously ran by Republican governors. Republicans, however, expanded their majority in the Senate, picking up a likely net gain of two seats. On Tuesday, November 6th, the 2018 Midterm Elections took place. Midterms take place every four years. Historically, midterm elections have been damaging to the political party of the sitting president. Since 1934, there have been twenty-one midterm elections, and the party of the incumbent president has lost, on average, about thirty seats in the House of Representatives and four seats in the Senate. Only twice in that time span, the party of the president gained seats in both chambers of Congress. In 1934, in the midst of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Democrats added to their majorities in both houses during his first term. President George W. Bush and the GOP picked up seats in both chambers in 2002 during his first term, a result from Bush’s high approval ratings following the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001. Every two years, all 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for reelection, as well as at least 33 of the 100 Senate seats. In 2018, there were 35 Senate Elections; 33 were regular elections occurring every six years, and the other two were special elections in Minnesota and Mississippi. Heading into Election Day, the Republicans held a 51-49 majority in the Senate and a 235-193 majority in the House of Representatives (there were seven vacancies in the House due to resignations), as well as thirty-three of the fifty governorships in the country. Of the thirty-five Senate seats, twenty-six were held by the Democratic party, and ten were in states that Trump won in 2016. Republicans won seats in Florida, Missouri, North Dakota, and Indiana, all states that Trump carried, against incumbent Democratic senators. In Florida, Republican Governor Rick Scott unseated three-term Democratic Senator Bill Nelson in an extremely close race, one in which a statewide recount confirmed Scott as the winner. Josh Hawley, the Attorney General of Missouri, defeated twiceelected Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill. In North Dakota, one-term Democrat Heidi Heitkamp lost to Congressman Kevin Cramer. Joe Donnelly, a one-term Democrat from Indiana, was defeated by businessman and former state representative Mike Braun. In West Virginia, however, a state that voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016, Democratic Senator Joe Manchin won re-election against Republican challenger and state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. Manchin, a moderate Democrat, voted in October 2018 to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to be an associate justice on the Supreme Court. Nelson, McCaskill, Heitkamp, and Donnelly, however, did not vote to confirm the conservative Brett Kavanaugh, which may have been a major factor in their Senate losses, whereas

Manchin’s vote to confirm Kavanaugh helped him win his close race in a red state. Despite the political backlash about Kavanaugh, exit polls have shown that the biggest issue concerning voters was health care, followed by immigration. In Nevada, incumbent Republican Senator Dean Heller was unseated by Democratic Congresswoman Jacky Rosen, making it one of the two Senate seats that the GOP lost in 2018. Three Republican senators decided not to run for re-election in 2018: Jeff Flake of Arizona, Bob Corker of Tennessee, and Orrin Hatch of Utah. Flake, a one-term senator, has gained national attention since President Trump’s inauguration for being extremely critical of the president and his administration. Senator Flake chose not to run for reelection in the state of Arizona, which has become less supportive of Republicans in recent years. To replace him, Republican Congresswoman Martha McSally, a former Air Force combat pilot, ran against Democratic Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema. In an extremely close race decided almost a week later, Sinema defeated McSally, allowing Democrats to pick up the seat previously held by Republicans in Arizona. In Tennessee, Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, a strong supporter of President Trump, won her race to replace anti-Trump Republican Bob Corker, who previously served as a senator for two terms. Orrin Hatch, the longest tenured current Republican senator, who served for seven terms, chose to retire at the age of 84, rather than seek an eighth term. To replace Hatch, former Massachusetts governor and 2012 Republican Presidential Nominee, Mitt Romney, was elected to be the next senator from Utah. Whereas Hatch has been a strong supporter of President Trump, Romney has been openly critical of the president, but has stated that he plans to work with Trump and support most of his agenda. With the Republicans’ new 53-47 majority, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said that his top priority is the continued confirmation of federal judges, just as it was the previous two years. Democrats, as expected, won control of the House of Representatives. To gain the majority in the lower chamber of Congress for the first time since 2010, the Democratic Party needed to flip 23 seats from Republicans, allowing them to have at least 218 of the 435 seats, which they eventually did. However, the size of their majority and the number of races won is still unknown since there are many races that have still not been called. The 2018 Congressional Elections are historic, as it marks the first time in US history that there will be at least 100 women serving in the House of Representatives. Although Democrats are now back in power as the majority in the House of Representatives, who their leader will be is still unknown. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Leader in the House since 2003, including the Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011, is expected to face challenges from other Democrats as they vote for a new Speaker of the House. More than twenty Democrats ran on the promise that they would not support Pelosi and would vote her out of leadership, but it is still unclear how many actually plan to do so. President Trump, however, has surprisingly stated that he supports Pelosi, tweeting “In all fairness, Nancy Pelosi deserves to be chosen Speaker of the

House by the Democrats. If they give her a hard time, perhaps we will add some Republican votes. She has earned this great honor!” The president called Pelosi following the Democrats’ major victory on Election Day, congratulating her and offering to work with her for the good of the country. Trump believes he can work with Democrats to pass an expensive infrastructure bill that will rebuild many roads, bridges, and airports across the country, a major part of Trump’s agenda that Republicans were not eager to support. President Trump has also stated that he can work with Democrats in the House on issues involving the environment and lowering prescription drug prices. Trump did warn, however, that with Democrats now in charge of important Congressional Committees with the power of investigating him and his administration, he will not work with them if they choose to engage in partisan investigations that he deems to be unfair. Pelosi also believes she can work with Republicans and Trump, pointing to her record as a bipartisan negotiator during the presidency of George W. Bush, including the passing of a major energy bill. GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also said that he spoke to Pelosi and is willing to work with her, just as they have in the past. Thirty-six gubernatorial elections occurred concurrently with the senatorial and congressional elections, including twenty-six states with a Republican governor. Democrats won the governorships in seven states that were previously run by Republican governors: Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, Illinois, Kansas, and Wisconsin. Republican Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin was defeated in an extremely close race by Democrat Tony Evers. Walker, once considered the face of the Republican Party and a candidate for president in 2016, was elected governor in 2010, survived a recall election in 2012, the first governor in US history to win a recall election, and was re-elected to a second term in 2014. Wisconsin voters, however, chose not to elect Walker to a third term. In Ohio, former Republican Senator Mike DeWine was narrowly elected to succeed term-limited Governor John Kasich, an anti-Trump Republican who is considering a 2020 White House bid. One of the most closely watched governor races in the country was in Florida, where Republican Congressman and Trump-endorsed candidate Ron DeSantis unexpectedly defeated Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum by a very small margin to replace Republican Rick Scott. That race, like Florida’s Senate race, underwent a recount, which again declared DeSantis as the winner. Another highly anticipated gubernatorial election occurred in Georgia, as the state’s secretary of state, Republican Brian Kemp, ran against a state representative, Democrat Stacey Abrams. Abrams sought to become the first ever African-American woman to be elected as a governor in the United States, but Kemp ultimately won. Democrat Jared Polis was elected as governor of Colorado, making him the first openly gay governor in US history, as well as the first Jewish governor in Colorado. Republican Mike Dunleavy was elected as governor in Alaska, a state previously governed by an independent, Bill Walker. In New York, Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo won re-election to a third term against Republican Marc

Molinaro. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a likely candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, was also re-elected to a second full term against Chele Farley. Democrats regained control of the New York State Senate for the first time since 2010. All four US representatives from Long Island, Republican Lee Zeldin of the 1st District, Republican Peter King of the 2nd District, Democrat Tom Suozzi of the 3rd District, and Democrat Kathleen Rice of the 4th District, won reelection. As expected, US Attorney General Jeff Sessions was asked to resign by President Trump the day after the midterms, on November 7, and chose to do so. Sessions, previously a Republican Senator from Alabama from 1997 to 2017, was the first sitting senator to endorse Trump in 2016, and was chosen to lead the Department of Justice following Trump’s victory against Hillary Clinton. Since then, President Trump has been very critical of Sessions, especially for his decision to recuse himself from the investigation into possible collusion between Trump’s campaign and Russia, leading to the appointment of Robert Mueller as Special Counsel. It was no secret that Trump wanted to move on from Jeff Sessions and appoint a new Attorney General, but he wanted to wait until after the midterm elections to avoid any political damage to Republicans. The gains in the Senate by Republicans will also allow Trump to nominate a new AG capable of being confirmed by the Republicanmajority Senate. In the interim, before a permanent replacement is nominated and confirmed, Matthew Whitaker, the former chief of staff to Sessions, will serve as Acting Attorney General. The 2018 Midterm Elections was a victory for both Republicans and Democrats. The Republican Party was expected to lose the House of Representatives, but they were not expected to make significant gains in the Senate. Republicans will expanded their 51 seat majority to 53 with new Senate pickups in Florida, North Dakota, Missouri, and Indiana. Democrats, now in control of the House of Representatives, are able to block major parts of President Trump’s legislative agenda, including immigration and new tax cuts. Democrats also have the ability to impeach the president with a simple majority in the House, but doing so, evidenced by Republican efforts in 1998 to impeach then-President Bill Clinton, does more political damage to the party pushing impeachment than it does to the president and his own party; impeaching President Trump will also not result in his removal from office because Democrats would need 67 Senate votes. Democrats also won seven new governorships, while Republicans won one from an independent. About 113 million people voted in the midterm elections with a turnout of 49 percent of eligible voters, making it the first time ever that at least 100 million people voted in a midterm. Despite the new split in power between both major parties, their talk of unity and plans to work together offer optimism for all Americans, even though the likelihood of it happening, will not last. Politics will not be quiet for long, as many Democrats are now more excited than ever to announce their candidacy for presidency in 2020, eager to take on President Trump and his ongoing reelection bid.

Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed A former judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, Brett Kavanaugh, was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Trump on July 10th, 2018 and was viewed as a strong candidate by the GOP to fill the swing-vote seat of the retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. While Kavanaugh’s conservative views and anti-abortion stance were opposed by the Democrats, late accusations of sexual misconduct against the judge led to a national divide and a Senate hearing on September 27th. Following convincing testimonies by both the judge and one of his three accusers, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, a week-long FBI investigation was conducted to search for evidence in support of the allegations. However, on Saturday, October 6th, Kavanaugh was confirmed by a 50-48 majority. 2018 Nobel Peace Prizes Awarded Dr. Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist, and Nadia Murad, a Yazidi survivor of rape and captivity by ISIS, have both been awarded the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts toward ending sexual violence during wartime. Mukwege has spent most of his life aiding victims of sexual assault and has spoken in front of the United Nations General Assembly in support of women’s health and rights. In 1999, he founded the Panzi Hospital in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to treat sexual assault survivors. Experts say 50 women are raped every hour in the eastern region of the Congo, where he lives. Murad is part of an ethnic minority and was kidnapped from her village in northern Iraq and held for three months as a sex slave. Despite the stigma in her culture regarding rape, she has become an outspoken leader against the use of women as a weapon of war. Crisis Continues in Venezuela On October 1st, 2018, the United Nations announced that close to 2 million people have fled Venezuela since 2015. The once powerful and oil-rich nation, previously led by Hugo Chávez, has been afflicted in recent years by corruption, the global fall in oil prices, and economic mismanagement by the current government of Nicolás Maduro. Mass protests killed over 100 people in 2017, with maternal mortality spiking by 65%, infant mortality increasing by 30%, and malaria cases rising by 76%. As basic supplies and food shortages have taken hold, inflation could reach 1,000,000% this year, leaving all savings meaningless and all cash worthless. Moreover, while an estimated 5,000 people continue to exit the failing country each day, Colombia, Bra-

zil, and Peru are struggling to support the refugees on their hands. The Macedonian Nomenclature Matter For decades, Greece has been unhappy with the small, landlocked nation of Macedonia due to its choice of name. Due to the fact that there is a northern territory in Greece also called Macedonia, the prime ministers of the two countries met earlier this year to discuss renaming the country of an estimated 2.1 million people to the “Republic of North Macedonia.” While critics claim that such a change would be a disgrace to the state and its heritage, proponents argue that such a change will clear the way for possible entrance into the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). A referendum was conducted to approve the change, but it was considered invalid as less than 50% of the population arrived at the polls. Angela Merkel to Step Down The leader of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) since 2000 and the Chancellor of Germany since 2005, Angela Merkel, often noted as the most powerful woman in the world, has announced plans to leave political life. Merkel led Germany through the 2008 Financial Crisis, Russia’s expansionary tactics in Ukraine and Crimea, and the influx of refugees and migrants that entered as a result of her policies. However, after a string of CDU losses in state elections and the increase in popularity of a far-right, anti-immigrant party in Germany, Merkel will pass on her position of party chairwoman in December, and will not seek re-election in 2021. Often seen as a stabilizing presence in Germany, Europe, and the world, this exit may have wide-reaching effects as nationalism is on the rise. A New President In Brazil Tired of endless corruption, rampant street violence, and economic weakness, the Brazilian people have elected Jair Bolsonaro their next president. Mr. Bolsonaro is best known as a congressman who spent 27 years opposing everything from the left and as someone who supports brutal crime-fighting tactics and weak gun control laws. Bolsonaro appears to be a polarizing force and has already expressed interest in naming generals to his cabinet, a move that strikes fear in a nation where military control occurred in the not too distant past. However, Bolsonaro was able to achieve 55% of the vote in his nation’s second round of elections, showing Brazil’s yearning for an interruption of the status quo.

High Profile Democrats Targeted With Dangerous Packages Tragedy in PittsCarson Leifer the return address due to an incorrect found at post offices before they ever burgh and a Call address. of political division, was taken by storm as more than a dozen Democrats and supposed political opponents of the president were targeted with dangerous packages filled with pipe bombs. The suspect, Cesar Sayoc of Florida, is now in custody and is facing up to 48 years in prison. The first dangerous package was found at the home of billionaire George Soros on Monday, October 22, 2018, in Bedford, New York. Soros, a multi-billionaire, is known for donating billions of dollars to many liberal causes and political movements, as well as being a wellknown critic of President Donald Trump. Inside the package was an explosive, which was then destroyed by a bomb squad. The following day, on Tuesday, October 23, a homemade pipe bomb was found in a package addressed to Hillary Clinton at the home of Bill and Hillary Clinton in Chappaqua, New York. Neither of the Clintons were home at the time and no one was hurt. A day later, on Wednesday, October 24, there were five more packages found with possible explosives. The first and most prominent reported target ,from Wednesday, was former President Barack Obama, but the package was screened by the United States Secret Service in Washington, D.C., and the pipe bomb was found. Another package addressed to former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan was discovered at the mailroom of CNN in New York City, causing the Time Warner Center to be evacuated. The package contained an explosive and power, hoping to harm Brennan, who occasionally appears on the television network to discuss many national security issues. John Brennan, the CIA Director under Barack Obama from 2013-2017, has been a subject of the media recently for his open disapproval of Donald Trump. Brennan has been very critical of President Trump, saying his actions in office have been “treasonous,” while President Trump has called Brennan “a very bad person.” Trump revoked security clearance from John Brennan in August 2018, a move deemed political by his opponents. Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California, a very vocal member of the Trump Resistance, was also a target on Wednesday, as two packages addressed to her, one in Los Angeles, California and another in Washington, D.C., were found at post offices with pipe bombs inside. Congresswoman Waters is considered one of President Trump’s biggest political opponents, promising to impeach the president if Democrats retake control of the House of Representatives. Waters has also been criticized by many politicians, both Democrat and Republican, for supporting the harassment of members of Trump’s administration in public in June 2018, saying “if you see anybody from that Cabinet in a restaurant, in a department store, at a gasoline station, you get out and you create a crowd, and you push back on them, and you tell them they’re not welcome anymore, anywhere.” The third target from Wednesday, October 24 was Eric Holder, the former Attorney General under President Barack Obama and potential 2020 presidential candidate. The package, however, was sent to

woman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee. The other packages sent out containing bombs also listed Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s office as its return address, misspelling her name as “Shultz.”

The next day, early on Thursday morning at about 5:00 am, the New York Police Department responded to a call about a suspicious package at Tribeca Grill, a restaurant in New York City owned by actor Robert De Niro. The package was addressed to De Niro himself and his office, and police tested the package and found a pipe bomb inside of it. De Niro has been very critical of President Trump in the past, calling him “blatantly stupid” and yelling “F*** Trump” at the Tony Awards. Later that day, more dangerous packages were found at postal facilities in Delaware and were addressed to former Vice President Joe Biden, who has publicly discussed a possible 2020

White House run. Another wave of packages containing pipe bombs was found on Friday, October 26. CNN was targeted again, this time the intended recipient was James Clapper, the former Director of National Intelligence under Obama and a current CNN contributor. Clapper has questioned Donald Trump’s mental fitness and his ability to be president. Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and Senator Kamala Harris of California, both expected candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, had packages addressed to them that contained bombs. Billionaire Tom Steyer, a Democratic fundraiser, also had a package addressed to him in California, but it was intercepted at a postal facility. Steyer has spent millions of dollars on television ads encouraging Democrats in the House of Representatives to impeach President Trump. All of Friday’s packages were

an intense increase in screenings and security measures. Fortunately, none of the bombs detonated and nobody was injured. FBI Director Christopher Wray said the pipe bombs were IEDs, meaning they were personally constructed, and they were supposed to explode, saying they were “not hoax devices.” All fourteen of the packages contained pipe bombs and had the same misspelled return address of the Florida office of Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Federal efforts to locate and detain the suspect began immediately, as President Trump said “the full weight of our government is being deployed to conduct this investigation and bring those responsible for these despicable acts to justice. We will spare no resources or expense in this effort.” The FBI was able to use samples of DNA on the packages to help track down the suspect and narrowed down his possible location to Florida. On Friday, October 26, Cesar Sayoc was arrested on Friday, October 26 in Plantation, Florida. Sayoc was found in southern Florida in a white van, in which he was living, despite having an address in Aventura, Florida. He has a long criminal record, including a 2002 bomb threat, as well as arrests for theft throughout the 1990s, drug possession in 2004, battery in 2013, and theft in 2014. Sayoc is a registered Republican and supporter of President Trump; he posted a video of himself at a Trump rally wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat. Sayoc has pleaded not guilty and is currently being held without bond in New York. The five federal charges are the interstate transportation of an explosive, illegal mailing of explosives, threats against former presidents and other persons, threatening interstate communications, and assaulting current and former federal officers. He faces up to 48 years in prison if convicted. Many in the media were quick to blame President Donald Trump for his rhetoric while discussing his political adversaries and the press, especially CNN. Trump blamed the media, stating that they are dividing the country through false reportings. The president condemned the actions of the suspect, saying “these terrorizing acts are despicable and have no place in our country” and that “we must never allow political violence to take root in America.” These acts are becoming less unusual in the country, as many prominent individuals have been targeted in the recent past. Republican Senator Susan Collins received a letter containing suspicious powder on October 16, 2018. Earlier in the year, in February, Vanessa Trump, now the ex-wife of Donald Trump, Jr. was hospitalized after opening a letter containing white powder from a Massachusetts man; the letter also contained an explicit message for Trump, Jr. The country is heading down an ominous path, where political violence is becoming more ubiquitous on both sides of the political aisle. Millions of Americans, fearing for the nation, know that in democracy, violence is never a substitute for civil discourse.

On Saturday, October 27th, a devastating attack took place at the Tree of Life Congregation Synagogue in Squirrel Hill in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Eleven innocent attendees and people in prayer were killed, and many

others were critically injured. The suspected attacker has been identified as 46-year-old Robert Bowers. Among the eleven victims were an elderly couple, a grandma close to 100 years old, and a pair of brothers. Their names are Daniel Stein (71), Joyce Feinberg (75), Richard Gottfried (65), Rose Mallinger (97), Jerry Rabinowitz (66), Cecil Rosenthal (59), David Rosenthal (54), Bernice Simon (84), Sylvan Simon (86), Melvin Wax (88), and Irving Younger (69). Most of the victims were attending a bris that morning, celebrating a new life. In response to this horrific attack, U.S. Attorney Scott Brady is pursuing a death penalty case against Bowers, which already has approval from President Trump. Prior to the attack, Brower posted anti-semitism and antiimmigration posts on his social media. His motive is unclear, but it may be classified as extreme ideology, which is a form of terrorism. Following the attack President Trump tweeted, “All of America is in mourning over the mass murder of Jewish Americans at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. We pray for those who perished and their loved ones, and our hearts go out to the brave police officers who sustained serious injuries. This evil Anti-Semitic attack is an assault on humanity. It will take all of us working together to extract the poison of Anti-Semitism from our world. We must unite to conquer hate.” On October 31st, President Trump visited Pittsburgh and assessed the damage that the town is now facing in the aftermath of this act of terror. Vigils and memorial services have been held throughout the country. A Suffolk County Community-Wide Solidarity Rally took place on October 29th at Dix Hills Jewish Center. Ten different synagogues across the county united together to mourn, grieve, remember, and act on the recent events. 1,500 people were in attendance, and it was definitely a step in the right direction to foster solidarity in the face of tragedy. This was a devastating tragedy, and the victims shall never be forgotten. A place of worship is supposed to be a place of peace and reflection, not a place of horror and anger. US citizens used their grief and anger to promote individuals to vote this past election day, where once again the issues surrounding mass shootings and gun control played a part in the platforms of many politicians.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh Officially Joins the Supreme Court Carson Leifer

World News & Op/Ed Editor

On July 9, 2018, President Trump made his second nomination to the nation’s highest court in his brief presidency, selecting 53-year-old Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the upcoming Supreme Court vacancy left by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy. An alumnus from Yale as both an undergraduate and a law student, Brett Kavanaugh served in President George W. Bush’s administration as White House Staff Secretary from 2003 to 2006, until being confirmed by the Senate to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in May 2006. Although he was originally nominated to that judgeship in July 2003 by President Bush, partisan politics forced his confirmation to be stalled for nearly three years. Prior to his work in the Bush White House, Kavanaugh served as a law clerk to Justice Anthony Kennedy in 1993, the man he seeks to replace on the nation’s highest court. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan in 1987 and confirmed in 1988 as an associate justice of the Supreme Court, Kennedy has served as the moderate swing vote on the court. President Reagan originally nominated Judge Robert Bork to the 1987 vacancy left by retiring Justice Lewis Powell, but he was not confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate. Bork’s rejection to the Supreme Court and the defamation of him and his career caused his name to become a verb, especially during Supreme Court confirmation hearings. “Borked” now means to “obstruct (someone, especially a candidate for public office) through systematic defamation or vilification.” Reagan’s second choice to fill Powell’s seat was Judge Douglas Ginsburg, but he withdrew his name from consideration less than two weeks after being nominated due to reports that he had frequently used marijuana. President Reagan’s third and final nominee to replace Justice Powell was Judge Anthony Kennedy of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Nominated on November 11, 1987 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on February 3, 1988, Justice Kennedy leaves behind a record and reputation as the Supreme Court’s most moderate justice, often serving as the swing vote on many landmark cases, including Obergefell v. Hodges in 2015, which was decided 5-4 and ultimately legalized same-sex marriage in all fifty states. Kennedy also served as the 5-4 swing vote in the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which upheld the ruling in Roe v. Wade in 1973, allowing women to have legal access to abortions. Justice Kennedy also sided with the conservatives on the Supreme Court at times, including in 2008 when he was the 5-4 swing vote in District of Columbia v. Heller, which protected the Second Amendment right of Americans to own and possess a firearm without service in a militia or use to protect one’s home. On June 21, 2018, then-81-year-old Kennedy wrote a letter to President Trump, informing him of his decision to retire from the Supreme Court, effective July 31 of the same year. President Trump later praised Justice Kennedy’s nearly thirty-year tenure on the court, saying “he is a man that I’ve known for a long time, and a man that I’ve respected for a long time, who’s been a great justice of the Supreme Court.” President Trump hopes to reshape the makeup of the nation’s highest court, seeking to shift the political balance to

the right for decades. The president’s first Supreme Court nominee, then-49year-old Neil Gorsuch, was nominated on January 31, 2017, less than two weeks into Trump’s presidency. A staunch conservative, Gorsuch was nominated to fill the seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who was also a lifelong originalist. Following Scalia’s death in February 2016, then-President Barack Obama nominated Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court, but the Republicancontrolled Senate refused to grant Garland a confirmation hearing, arguing that there should not be any new justices confirmed in a presidential election year. The Constitution of the United States

final candidates following Kennedy’s retirement announcement, and finally decided to choose Judge Kavanaugh to be his second Supreme Court nominee in less than eighteen months. Democrats have argued that a conservative-majority Supreme Court with Kavanaugh would reverse Roe v. Wade and restrict abortion rights for women at the federal level. President Trump admitted that he did not ask any of his possible nominees whether they would reverse the landmark case from 1973, but he did state throughout his 2016 campaign that he would only nominate pro-life judges. The nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States did not come without dividing the country, especially on the issue of gender. Just days prior to the expected confirmation vote of Judge Kavanaugh, on September 12, 2018, it was reported by the Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court justice in a primedia that vate ceremony. Despite widespread protests inside of the Senate Chamber and outside of the Supreme Court Building, the vote occurred and was presided over by Vice President Mike Pence, who is constitutionally the President of the Senate. At about 4 pm EST, the Senate completed its vote, officially confirming Brett M. Kavanaugh to be the 114th Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The final vote count was 50-48, making the two-vote margin the closest for a Supreme Court confirmation since 1881. Of the fifty-one Republican senators, forty-nine voted to confirm Kavanaugh, including swing votes Jeff Flake of Arizona and Susan Collins of Maine. Republican Senator Steve Daines of Montana was a strong supporter of Kavanaugh throughout the nomination process, but was unable to participate in the vote because he was in his home state, attending his daughter’s wedding. The only Republican senator to oppose Brett Kavanaugh was Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, but out of respect for Senator Daines’ absence, she voted “present” instead of “no”, essentially meaning she did not cast an official vote. The only Democrat to vote in support of Kavanaugh was Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia, a political moderate who is up for reelection in 2018 in a state that voted overwhelmingly for Trump in 2016. Brett Kavanaugh was sworn on the evening of October 6, the same day as his confirmation, in a private ceremony. He took the oath from Chief Justice John Roberts, as well as from retiring Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy. The following Monday evening, on October 8, Justice Kavanaugh attended a swearingin ceremony at the White House, headed by President Trump and attended by the other eight justices of the Supreme Court. President Trump spoke at the ceremony, apologizing to Kavanaugh for the damage the confirmation process and unproven allegations caused his family, saying “those who step forward to serve our country deserve a fair and dignified evaluation, not a campaign of political and personal destruction based on lies and deception.” Justice Kavanaugh also spoke, thanking President Trump for his “steadfast, unwavering support throughout this process.” After being confirmed and officially joining the bench, Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh made history by hiring a team of four law clerks, all who are women. The nomination and confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court of the United States was one of the most polarizing moments in modern political history, causing an enormous divide across the entire nation. The issue was deeper than politics and conservatism versus liberalism, as many people in the country viewed this as a crucial time for women to come forward and confront powerful men. However, it also caused many people to question the validity of many claims, arguing that in America, people are always innocent until proven guilty. The confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court fulfilled another one of President Trump’s biggest and most consequential campaign promises, which was to nominate conservative judges to the nation’s highest court. The balance of the Supreme Court may possibly shift to the right for decades to come, allowing the contentious Trump presidency to leave a lasting impact felt by an entire generation.

This year, the Thunderbird Editorial Staff is starting a new series called “Humans of Hills East.” Once a week, we will pick a student, a teacher, or a staff member to share their story. Their stories will be posted on our Instagram, our Facebook, and our website. Our hope is that all members of the HSE community will really get to know the familiar faces they pass in the hallways each day. Everyone has a story; we’re here to share it. #HumansofHillsEast

Mr. Carcone: “I went to school for business and broadcasting. I wanted to work in the entertainment industry, so I wound up working for Viacom, MTV, VH1, and NBC. I was basically in charge of payroll and of hiring camera crews, lighting crews, talent. It was cool. Then I wanted to go for my masters, so I went back to school. When I went back to school, I managed a family Italian restaurant. I did that while still looking for television work. Then 9/11 happened. One of my friends was a fireman; I lost him that day. The night before 9/11, I fed him his favorite meal. He told me it was silly to go back to school for television, and since I love kids, I should be a teacher. Sure enough, he passed away on 9/11. That winter I wound up not doing my masters in television; instead, I went back to school to be a teacher. And here I am. I owe my career to him.”

Sam Abramson: “I started singing in preschool because my cantor at my temple would ask people to sing for him. So I said ‘sure I’ll do it!’. Then he recorded me singing songs to my temple and that’s what sparked my passion for singing. Then I joined a chorus in fifth grade and I have been doing it since. I am a junior now and I’m not good at math but that’s a lot of years. Doctor McRoy is one of my favorite people in the whole world and she made me want to study music education in college. I take vocal lessons, piano lessons and guitar lessons outside of school. Music has been a big part of my life and I want to do music education because of Doctor McRoy. I just want to teach people that music doesn’t have to be just a hobby, that it can be a living, like she taught me.”

Daniel Salkinder: “I came from a private school in a different district, so I ting accustomed to the policies and people of public s now, my main five classes are AP Calc BC, AP Chem, AP lish 11H and Spanish 3H. I am also in research, band, Statistics - my only ninth grade classes. My last school w in most, if not all, subjects. I have also studied other math and science (specifically physics and chem) outsid but these are in addition to the school curriculum. I also sp and English fluently and can hold up a fair conversatio and French when necessary. I play the saxophone and the puzzles, especially solving crosswords and Rubik’s Cub competitive academically and have scored fairly well in ics, and linguistic competitions.”

Mrs. Cullen: “I’ve never wanted to be anything other than a teacher since I was in kindergarten. For some reason, I liked paper. I’m not kidding. I asked my kindergarten teacher for extra dittos to take home and then I tortured my family and friends by having a madeup classroom in my basement. There was a chalkboard and everything, and I’d play school. I’ve been playing school since, well, since I’ve been in school. I like transmitting information to other people, and I like to find fun ways to do it. And for some reason I just like paper and books and markers and colored pens and- I don’t know... that’s just what I like to do.”

Xinwen Zheng: I was born in China and my parents left me there when I was about eight years old. They came to the United States to open up and restaurant so I lived with my grandparents in China until I was eight. I vaguely remember that my parents came back to visit once but it was like meeting a stranger. I didn’t really know them that well so it was a little bit awkward. When I was eight my parents finally wanted me back. It was actually pretty easy to get a visa because both of my parents were in the United States. I moved to Arkansas. It was really awkward at first because I had lived all of my life without my parents or my brother so getting to know them and adjusting to a life in a foreign country with no knowledge of any of the language was pretty hard. Luckily english is pretty easy to learn so I caught on quickly. People in Arkansas were really nice but I was devastated when I found out I had to move again to New York before ninth grade. I feel like in the end it was the best decision because the opportunities here are endless. I’m glad I moved. Here it was a lot of get used to but I am so lucky to have met all of my friends here. A lot of it is due to Doctor McRoy. Music has been the only constant in my life because I was in chorus in China, in Arkansas and now here. It has kept me sane.

Ally Perticone: “I have been riding horses since I was about five years old. I am currently 16 so it’s been a while. I have been competing since I was in seventh grade. I used to think that I wasn’t good because I never really got first or second place, I was always fifth or sixth. But one day I went to a show and I got a horse that I never rode before. I thought I wasn’t going to place or I was going to be really bad. That day, I rode my best (which is what I always do). When they were announcing the places, I heard ‘first place to Alexandra Perticone’. I freaked out and I ran to my mom to hug her. I was crying because I had never gotten first place before. That happened when I was thirteen years old and I have been competing ever since.”

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Maya Hoffman & Skylar Semon

Staff Writers

As two busy high school students, we wish we had the time to get the amount of sleep required for teenagers. In fact, studies show that only 15% of teens receive enough sleep on a school night. Between balancing tests, quizzes, studying, and sports, it is basically impossible to get a good night’s sleep. With the extremely stressful workload and responsibilities of high school, sleep is not the priority of teenagers even though all we want to do is hit snooze in the morning. It is tremendously crucial to get the required 8 hours of sleep to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Sleep is a vital aspect to human health, and when teens do not sleep enough, their brain functions slower which limits their ability to learn. Sleep improves alertness, athletic performance, and energy. Did you know how easy it is to improve your sleeping habits? Here are some tips to get a better night’s sleep. Keep a schedule. It is very important to keep your body on a constant sleep and wake cycle. This means you should try to get up and go to sleep at the same time everyday. This is obviously very hard for high school students because we have to wake up so early. Simple ways to introduce this habit are not sleeping until the late afternoons on the weekends and trying to going to bed at a reasonable time during the week. Reduce napping during the day because it negatively affects your sleep. Napping during the day confuses your internal body clock which will cause you to struggle when trying to fall asleep later that night. Easy ways to introduce this habit are to simply relax and watch a show instead of napping after school. It

also helps to keep the lights on when relaxing to avoid falling asleep and messing up your sleep cycle. Reduce Screen Time 1-2 hours before bed. This one is very hard because we are all up cramming for that big test, but this rule is extremely important. Not everyone has the privileges of being able to relax before bedtime, but you can introduce this by turning down the brightness during your late night study sessions and making sure the TV is off before you go to bed. Do not eat late at night. Eating late at night can cause you to experience weird dreams. Your body is on a cycle, and if you disturb the cycle, it may be harder to fall asleep. So, if you change your eating times, your body will not react well. Try eating an earlier dinner so you can burn off all that energy before bed and drink lots of water to curb those late night cravings. Limit the amount of light exposure before bed. Watching TV or sleeping with the lights on reduces the amount of melatonin your body produces. Melatonin is a calming agent produced by your body to help you fall asleep. Blue light given off by TV screens disturbs the calming of the brain and prohibits you from a good night’s rest. Make sure to turn off your lights and close your blinds before going to bed. With these five helpful tips, you can slowly increase the hours of sleep you get each night and keep your body on a steady sleep cycle. Sleep is so important, especially to teens, and let’s face it, we could all use more sleep.

Humans are social creatures. This is an irrefutable fact. Our sociability is demonstrated in our behaviors, as well as our desires, our history, and our psychological composure. Without the concept of society, humanity (likely) would’ve never developed to the extent to which we can measure it today. We as people are naturally inclined to feel that we need to belong to some greater social organization, especially around this time of the year. Thanksgiving and Christmas are arguably the two most important social holidays of the year. As these holidays approach, we all prepare to be showered with attention in massive gatherings of friends and family. In the past, the media has always put emphasis on the somewhat large family gatherings around the warm coals of the Christmas hearth or the union of entire communities with their neighboring settlements. While many would love for this to be true for all, this vision is only an illusion for many. While there are undoubtedly a few massive gatherings, there is a spectrum as to how the happiness of these holidays can be measured. While some people will spend their holidays feeling loved and cherished by family and friends, there will be others who may

not feel the same. These “others” will feel dissatisfied and lonely, regardless of the number of attendees at any party. The current students of High School East are relatively close to being new to their grade levels. As a result, sophomores and (especially) freshmen may feel uncomfortable in their new environment. This discomfort can be greatly eased via the actions of the upperclassmen: the juniors and seniors. Juniors and seniors are often seen as heroes to freshmen, role models on which to base one’s behavior. Although they aren’t necessarily aware of it, their actions play a large role in determining the sentiment of new students towards their high school. While some upperclassmen are not always welcoming to the

lowerclassmen, they are in the minority as most upperclassmen do not participate in creating a mildly unwelcoming environment. Many can be seen in the hallways, extracurriculars, and integrated classrooms helping their younger classmates throughout the school day. Upper and lower classmen are emotionally homogenous, which prompts one to wonder why the occasional bias between the former and the latter group exist, as well as to how the situation of newer students may be improved upon. It is important to obtain a broad understanding of the situation as a school in order to make improvements for those feeling unwelcome in an alien environment. With the issue acknowledged, the

topic now on the table for discussion is the possible remedies to its effects. How can veteran students offer assistance to newcomers instead of disdaining them? The answer is simpler than one might think: do everything possible to make them feel welcome. As previously stated, the upperclassmen are seen as role models. A gesture as simple as spending time with someone of a lower grade or listening to them is seen as the equivalent of a knight in shining armor rescuing a princess. Unfortunately, there are still some lower classmen who are currently unfamiliar with or perturbed by upperclassmen. We cannot be sure of the reasons individuals feel so opinionated, but each student can play a part in welcoming new students by not only tolerating them, but also by accepting them into their lives. Instead of walking the halls in fear of a rude glance or inappropriate comment, maybe a junior or senior could accompany a lower classman for a day and “show them the ropes.” If High School East begins such a trend now, it can create a more approving and tolerant school community that will be remembered for generations of students to come.

Top Three Food Trends of 2018 Target Attempts to Dominate Online The Brianna Kalina & Madison Schioppo Shopping for the Holiday Season Staff Writers

It’s the most wonderful time of year... to shop at Target. With the holidays just around t h e corner, i t ’ s time for retailers to amp u p their special perks. Target’s holiday benefits (which include faster shipping and more employees) are being improved as they try to provide a 21st century in-store experience, while holding strong in their ground in battle with Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. Shipping For the first time ever, Target will be offering free two-day shipping for thousands of online products with no minimum purchase required! This deal will run from November 1- December 22. The retailer offered the perk in March, but with a minimum required purchase of $35. This holiday shipping solace mimics Amazon Prime, which allows members to pay a membership fee of $119 annually (or $12.99 monthly) in order to receive two-day free shipping on prime eligible items. Drive Up Service Target is pushing even further to draw in more business with its “Drive Up” service. This allows customers to order any of around 250,000 Target products online, which will be ready for pick-up within an hour. Target employees will then bring the customer’s order to his/

her car. The Drive Up service will be provided at nearly 1,000 Target stores. Same D a y Delivery The grand r e tailer is going so far as to establish a same day delivery policy. This process occurs via Shipt, a grocery delivery company that Target purchased earlier this year. Shipt delivers purchases within hours to a wide network of Target shoppers. Employees With all of the commerce Target is planning on drawing in this holiday season, a wide array of employees is needed. The company is confident it can meet holiday hiring goals, even with the dense labor market produced by the competing retail giants aforementioned. Target plans on hiring 120,000 temporary staff members, which is 20% more than last holiday season. Specifically, the company is planning on doubling their employees for the sector of online orders. With the holidays approaching, retail giants are always looking to lure in new customers with new perks. Whether it be in store or online, companies use a plethora of tactics to perpetuate seasonal sale. This year, Target is at the forefront of compelling seasonal shoppers with a variety of attractive perks. ‘Tis the season for shopping!

As the end of 2018 approaches, many memories start to be shared as a way to appreciate and remember the significant events of the year. One thing loved by many, food of course, has offered us several trendy moments in 2018. Though this year is coming to an end, it doesn’t mean these food novelties should die. As new foods and cravings emerge, the more creative and curious people are becoming about new eating habits and styles. The Açaí Bowl One foodie favorite of the year was definitely the acai bowl. Though the pronunciation differs depending on who you ask, the love does not! This treat makes for the perfect snack or meal anytime and anywhere. So, what exactly is an acai bowl? The base of the bowl is an acai-derived smoothie-like blend, topped Photo courtesy of Madi- with fresh son Schioppo fruits, such as bananas, blueberries, strawberries, and more. Most acai bowls also contain granola layers, and you can even add more toppings for an even sweeter and more unique experience. Your choice of toppings may include Nutella, Peanut Butter, or chocolate chips, just to name a few! Though thought to be a pricier snack, it is an expense worth indulging in. The Poke Bowl It seems safe to say that 2018 was definitely a year filled with bowls. Aside from the tropical acai bowl, a craze that still continues is the well-known poke bowl! This diced raw fish dish originates from native Hawaiian cuisine. Depending on where

you choose to get your poke bowl, you can either create your own or order from a designated menu. The traditional style consists of diced fish marinated in soy sauce with sesame oil tossed with sesame seeds, seaweed, and rice. The most common types of fish found in these bowls include ahi tuna, yellowtail, and salmon. There is never a wrong time to eat a poke bowl, and its added health benefits make this dish even more appealing. The “Avo-Craze” This past year has been filled “avolovers” eating “avo-everything”! Along with unique creations using avocados, people love adding them to everyday dishes or even just eating them plain as a snack. The avocado has grown to be very popular due to its large amount of health benefits. It is packed with protein, potassium, and vitamins C and E. People have fallen in love with the avocado, mainly because it is such a versatile fruit. Avocados can be eaten at anytime of the day, in any style you prefer. Some fan favorites, as expressed all over social media, are avocado toast, avocado ice cream, and avocado smoothies. One can never go wrong by adding an avocado! As this year comes to an end, new food

The End of An Era: Chris Evans is Putting Down his Shield Dylan Kaufman

Editor-In-Chief

Since the rise of superheroes began in the early 2010’s, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a major hit in the movie business. Beginning in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the MCU has risen to become one of the best and highest-grossing series of movies in history. With blockbusters such as The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), and Black Panther (2018), it’s clear that we’re in the golden age of superhero movies. However, there are outside factors that can deeply affect the future of the MCU. Off-screen problems, such as contract disputes and actors no longer wanting to play their roles, can cause major changes in the MCU. This is the case for Captain America, as Chris Evans (the actor who plays him) has announced that he has officially ended his career as the super-soldier. Prior to the role that made him a household name, Evans starred as another Marvel hero. He played Johnny Storm, a.k.a. The Human Torch, in Fantastic Four (2004) and again in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Soldier (2007). However, as we all know, Captain America was definitely a better fit for the actor. His first movie as Steve Rogers was in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). The film was the last movie in Marvel’s Phase One of their MCU that led up to The Avengers, which released one year later. Since then, Evans has starred as the Captain in The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015),

Captain America: Civil War (2016), and Avengers: Infinity War (2018), as well as cameos in many other Marvel films. The move does not come as a surprise to many, as Evans hinted at putting down the shield in an article for The New York Times, where he said, “You want to get off the train before they push you off.” For actors who continuously return as characters in beloved movie franchises (Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, etc.), it can be hard to find work, as audiences could see that actor in another film and say, “Hey, look! That guy’s in this movie!” This can be a big no-no for directors as they want the film to feel genuine and original. Evans tweeted about his retirement from the role, saying that he was “eternally grateful” to “everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience.” It has been confirmed that he will have a major role in the upcoming Avengers 4 (yet to be titled), but that this will be his last role as the super-soldier. Upon his departure, the question being asked by many is “who will play Captain America now?” In the comics, the death of a hero is very common. When this happens, another hero usually steps up and fills the gap that was left. When Captain America dies in the comics, two heroes usually fill his shoes: Bucky Barnes, a.k.a The Winter Soldier (played by Sebastian Stan) and Sam Wilson, a.k.a Falcon (played by Anthony Mackie). Expect to see one of them rocking the red, white, and blue in an upcoming MCU film.

Pretty Woman: The Musical Takes a Beloved Rags to Riches Tale to Broadway Amanda Epstein

Pretty Woman was first filmed in 1990 and starred Julia Roberts and Richard Gere. The plot tells the story of a young woman working at night on the streets in LA when she met a wealthy businessman. Eventually, the two fall in love while overcoming differences in lifestyle and business. The play was written by Garry Marshall and J. F. Lawton, and the music was created by Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance. Before I bought tickets, I was unsure if I would like the show. I had not seen the movie, and I did not know how I would feel about the music. By the end of the show, the word exceptional would be an understatement! From the actors, costumes, songs, sets, and dances to the talent and enthusiasm, this show went far beyond my expectations. The lead, Vivian, was played by Samantha Barks. She has been a part of many renowned shows and was phenomenal as usual. She truly got into character, especially in scenes with her friend Kit, played by Orfeh. Vivian soon found herself in a whole new world, one

which was unfamiliar to her. Soon after, she entered the Beverly Wilshire Hotel dressed in the completely wrong wardrobe and seeming to have the completely wrong attitude for this upper class life. No matter what she was doing, however, her charming and genuine personality made everyone love her. My favorite part was when she walked into a clothing store in a so-called “inappropriate outfit,” goes into the dressing room, and comes out in a very professional dress. This scene illustrated the shift in her lifestyle and how Edward, played by Andy Karl, changed her life. Their relationship grows throughout the movie as they go shopping and see shows together, and Edward takes Vivian to a fancy dinner where he teaches her how to dance properly. They grew together as one, and in the end, they both realized they needed each other! The chemistry between the two was stellar; you would almost think they were dating in real life. Over the years, the NFL has experienced many surprises. Some are good, and others aren’t so good. History is made year after year through amazing

moments, records being shattered, stars arising, and more. The 2018-19 season is midway through, and history has been made in many different ways. Teams have done better than expected, and other teams have not led up to the hype around them. This offseason has featured numerous trades and signings that have made this season historic. Midway through the season, the Rams are the top ranked team. The Rams have shown what it means to take unknown players and make them into stars. They have been able to create a receiving corps that is arguably one of the best in the NFL. Former number one overall pick Jared Goff has broken out to become one of the league’s best quarterbacks.

the wide receivers and quarterback that are getting all of the recognition. It is the running back, Todd Gurley. Gurley leads the running back position in total yards, touchdowns, yards per game, and more. In Fantasy Football, Gurley consistently puts up extremely high numbers. The Rams also get it done on defense, as they are led by former defensive player of the year Aaron Donald, who currently leads the league in sacks. This team is the biggest threat to win Super Bowl LIII (53). In his 18th season, Drew Brees is still one of the league’s best players. He is the leader of one of the league’s best offenses. With his starting running back, Mark Ingram, out for the first four weeks of the season, he was able to use his backup and

last year’s rookie of the year Alvin Kamara very effectively. Brees has thrown 13 touchdowns and zero interceptions at 39 years old! On October 8th, in the third quarter, Drew Brees threw a 62-yard touchdown to Tre’Quan Smith. With that pass, Brees broke Peyton Manning’s record for the most passing yards of all time. The Saints are Super Bowl hopefuls, and they can increase their chances of making it by getting better at defense like they were last year. The Kansas City Chiefs are the hottest team in the AFC. The main reason why: quarterback Patrick Mahomes. This is Mahomes’ second season in the NFL. He only started in one game last year, and has started every game this year. Patrick Mahomes has gotten comparisons to NFL legend Brett Favre in that he is able to throw extremely far, accurate, and is able to run. Patrick Mahomes put the world on notice in Week 4, when he made a huge comeback against the Denver Broncos. Down 3, with three minutes to go in regulation, Mahomes was running towards the left as he was getting tackled from his legs by All-Pro Von Miller. As he was falling down, he switched the ball from his right to his left hand and was able to throw it for a first down. The Chiefs won that game and are 7-1 today. Before the NFL season started, Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell wasn’t satisfied with the amount of money on his contract. So, he has had a holdout until he receives more money. During this holdout, James Conner has taken over as the starter. Conner beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2016. Since Week 1, he has been one of the best players at his position, and an inspiration to millions.

One of the biggest surprises of the season is at the wide receiver position. When people think of the top receivers in the NFL, we think of Antonio Brown, Odell Beckham Jr., DeAndre Hopkins, and Julio Jones. This year, there is a new top receiver, and his name is Adam Thielen. Adam Thielen was offered only a $500 scholarship to a division two college. He went undrafted in 2013. He worked hard and made the Minnesota Vikings practice squad. Today, he has the record for most consecutive games with at least 100 receiving yards. This past NFL Draft hasn’t produced many stars yet this season, however, there is a clear Rookie of the Year award candidate. His name is Saquon Barkley. Barkley had 43 rushing touchdowns and averaged 5.7 yards per carry in just three years at Penn State University. Drafted 2nd overall by the New York Giants, he has been one of the best running backs in all of football. With a combination of speed and strength, Saquon has been able to break numerous tackles and score five rushing touchdowns, which is tied for fifth in the NFL. That’s one of the few good things that have happened for the New York Giants this season. On the contrary, quarterback Eli Manning has been horrendous and extremely inaccurate. His Offensive line hasn’t done him any good either, as he constantly gets sacked. The Giants are looking for a quarterback to rebuild their team in this upcoming draft. With the first half of the season done, we the fans hope to experience another great eight weeks. Midway through the NFL Season great games and moments have occurred, records have been shattered, and stars have been born.

As the football season approaches the halfway mark, it is time for fantasy coaches to evaluate their roster. Are you fighting for a playoff spot? Are you fighting your first win? Are you fighting for an undefeated season? Whatever the case may be, any roster can use improvement. That is what trading allows you to do. Here are a couple of players that you should trade for and trade away as the trade deadline is approaching in most leagues. Players to trade forNick Chubb: Chubb has had lack of opportunities during his rookie season. However, this will all change with the departure of Carlos Hyde. couple of games, and we expect this to continue. He has cleared 50 yards receiving in his last four games, and we expect these numbers to continue with Baker Mayfield at quarterback. Consider Njoku a strong TE1 the rest of the way. Players to trade awayJames Conner: Sooner or later, Le’veon Bell will come back. When Bell does come back, it will be a huge downgrade for Conner. We love Conner’s talent; we just think that Bell will only complicate things. Trade him now before Bell returns. Mark Ingram: We know fantasy owners have patiently waited for Ingram to return from suspension, but we just don’t see him being the stud he was last year. Alvin Kamara has been great all year and the Saints have so many mouths to feed. It also doesn’t help when Taysom Hill comes in and steals Ingram’s redzone chances. Demaryius Thomas: Thomas has been very inconsistent this year, and we just think his best days are behind him. Emmanuel Sanders has looked

T.Y. Hilton: Andrew Luck’s favorite target is back from his injury. Before going down, Hilton put up steady WR1 numbers and he hasn’t had that game where he just goes absolutely bonkers. of three 100+ game winners (two from the same division!), two scorching hot teams that were not expected to play in October before the season started (the Brewers and Athletics), and a Red Sox team that won 108 games in the regular season and 119 overall. National League: The postseason in the NL started with two division tiebreakers to determine which team would play in the Wildcard game and which team would win the division. The Brewers and Dodgers won their tiebreaker games, causing the losing Cubs and Rockies to face each other in a win or go home Wild Card game. The Rockies beat the Cubs 2-1 in 13 innings and went on to face the Brewers in the NLDS. The Dodgers faced the Braves. The Brewers swept the Rockies three games to zero, after winning by scores of 3-2 in extras, 4-0, and 6-0. Milwaukee came into the playoffs as the hottest team in baseball and surely looked to be continuing how they ended the regular season. As for the Dodgers-Braves series, the Dodgers won the series in four games, by scores of 6-0, 3-0, a 6-5 loss, and a 6-2 win to close it out. The Dodgers would go to Milwaukee for the NLCS. The Brewers won the first game with a score of 6-5. The Dodgers won the next night 4-3 to even the series. The Brewers won the first game in Los Angeles, 4-0, but the Dodgers once again answered on the next night by winning 2-1. The Dodgers then took a 3-2 series lead after a 5-2 victory. The Brewers answered, of course, which set up the only Game Seven in the entire postseason. Walker Buehler pitched great, and home runs by Cody Bellinger and Yasiel Puig powered the Dodgers to their second straight World Series appearance. American League: The postseason in the AL didn’t have any division tiebreaker games, but it certainly had the most interesting matchup. The Yankees hosted the Athletics, who were the underdogs since most people didn’t expect them to play October baseball, yet had 97 wins in the season, compared to the Yankees 100 wins. The Athletics decided to pitch a bullpen game without having a single starter like the Yankees, but the Yankees bats got to the A’s pitchers early, as they won 7-2. They would then head to Boston to play the Red Sox , while the Astros hosted the Indi-

faced each other in the postseason since 2004, when the Red Sox famously came back from down 3-0 in the ALCS to beat the Yankees and went on to break the Curse of the Bambino by winning a World Series for the first time in 86 years. In the first game, the Sox beat the Yankees behind great pitching from Chris Sale by a score of 5-4. The Yankees, however, came right back and won game 2 in Boston, 6-2. Then, in the first game at Yankee Stadium, the Red Sox stunned Yankees fans, winning 16-1!! In game 4, the Sox got out to an early lead, and the Yankees had a comeback that fell short in the 9th inning. The Red Sox were going to the ALCS to face the Astros, who swept the Indians by scores of 7-2, 3-1, and 11-3. This matchup was another highly anticipated one, as it was the teams with the two best records in all of baseball facing off. The Astros won the first game 7-2, but the Sox won the next 4 games 7-5, 8-2, 8-6, and 4-1. They would host the Dodgers to start the Fall Classic. World Series: Red Sox. Dodgers. Boston. Los Angeles. Two historic franchises, two historic cities. The first 2 games of the World Series were hosted by the Red Sox, and they won both games by scores of 8-4 and 4-2. Game 3 was in L.A., and it was the best, closest, most exciting game of the series. After pitching heroics by Walker Buehler for the Dodgers and Nathan Eovaldi for the Red Sox, Max Muncy became the hero when he homered to win it 3-2 in the 18th inning. The Dodgers hoped that that game could help propel them back into the series, but the Sox won the next two games, 9-6 and 5-1, to bring another championship to the city of Boston. Chris Sale struck out Manny Machado for the last out, commentator Joe Buck exclaimed “Red Sox win the World Series!”, and The Boston Champagne Party started.

The Hills East girls varsity soccer team had an extremely impressive season this year. They finished with a record of 11-1-2, leaving them tied for the best record of the year alongside Sachem East and Northport. They made the county tournament as a 2 seed in the AA bracket, which consisted of 15 different schools. On October 22nd, in the first round of counties, Hills East played Walt Whitman. Ali Schwarz scored 2 goals, Alyssa Studdert got 2 assists, and Jessica Garziano scored a goal. They advanced to the next round where they played Commack just two days later. They won the

County Quarterfinal with a score of 2-0, behind Morgan Novikoff’s 10 saves and Jessica Garziano’s goal.

They advanced to play 3-seeded Northport on the 26th of October in the County Semifinals. Novikoff had an incredible 14 saves, Garziano had 2 assists, Studdert scored a goal, and

just like that, Hills East advanced to the County Finals against 4-seeded Smithtown West. The final game took place on Tuesday, October 30th, at Hauppauge High School. It was a very close, very competitive game, but Smithtown West came out on top at the end, winning 1-0 and taking the title of county champ. Nevertheless, Hills East had an incredible season and finished it off with a remarkable playoff run. Hills East will always remember the great performances and dedication given by seniors Eleni Sofroniou, Trinity Pancella, Olivia Teng, Ali Schwarz, Morgan Novikoff, Liz Gordon, Jessica Garziano, and Avery Francis.

As the first day of preseason started, the boys came in early to run the usual two mile warm-up to start the big soccer season ahead of them. Countless drills, touches, and shots prepared the boys for the season starting with scrimmages during Labor Day weekend. Over the past 10 years or so, the two separate teams of the HSE boys soccer program have had much success. The varsity team is led by by Coach Carcone and

shows a lot of leadership and dedication towards the program. As of October 9th, the Varsity soccer team, which was largely composed of seniors, had a league record of 6 wins, 9 losses, and 1 tie. Unfortunately, for the first time in many years the Hills East program didn’t make the playoffs, but that was not for a lack of effort or talent. JV is composed of 9th and 10th graders. The team is giving the boys a good introduction to HSE sports. Coach Oscar has worked his team hard and to his style of play. Led by captains Scott Schwartz, Miles Mackenzie, Michael Hector, and Alex Raphelson, the JV team worked hard all season to make a name for themselves. The JV team has a solid record at 10 wins and 6 losses, which is leaving room for a promising future for our boys soccer program.

a Dixette, and I have been on the team for two years. Going to kickline practice is my favorite thing to do. We are one big family, and I can say that I am close with every single girl on the team. Kickline season starts late August as we all come together once again to prepare for a new school year. We have a week of intensives that usually last for many hours each day during which our new captains (Jessie Winakor, Skylar Fensterstock, and Amanda Babcock) along with our Coach (Mrs. Martinez) introduce themselves and explain what it’s like to be on the team. We then stretch, condition, do kick drills, and begin learning choreography for pep rally and homecoming. Pep rally is my favorite part of being on kickline because our captains always find the coolest remixes and create amazing dances for us to perform in front of the whole school. As soon as the school year starts, we begin practices which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00-6:00. If you have ever passed by the gym lobby after school, you have probably seen the Dixettes in action. The night before pep rally we all come together as a team and have a party. We also make the homecoming baskets, which are raffled off at the football game, and get excited for all of the homecoming festivities. On the day of pep rally, the Dixettes come to school ready to perform and dressed in spirit, wearing our pep rally shirts and our red converse. While many people think that kickline only performs at pep rally, we actually participate in a variety of other events as well. We perform at Safe Halloween, the James E Allen Holiday Show, and various competitions throughout the year. Once pep rally and homecoming end, we hold tryouts for the competition teams, which are kick, pom, and dance. Our captains decide who makes which team and then we spend the rest of October, November, and early December learning choreography and practicing all three dances. Sadly, the kickline season ends in late February, and we all say goodbye until June for team tryouts. If you have a passion for dance and are looking for a supportive and fun team to join, come try out to be a Dixette for the 2019-2020 school year!
