CONTENT

WEEK 1-3 Overview In my first few weeks in this studio, I will aim to better my understanding on form finding and the fabrication of shell structures. In order to do this, my first goal would be to grasp the basics of grasshopper as well as its many plugins.

I would also be linking form finding to diffrient building typologies as well as doing case studies to better my knowledge in the practicality of diffrient shell and spatial structures in the real world.

WEEK 4 - 6 Overview For my mid semester project, I decided to mostly focus on precedents and use their designed structural forms to conceptualise my own ideas through sketches.

However, one problem I realised that I had during these few weeks was my inability to move on beyond the conceptualization phase.

Although I spent a lot of time on conceptual sketches, they do not portray my design clearly and end up making my ideas look too arbitrary. I will now look to do diagramming through digital means as it will make it easier for me to get a more accurate measurements for my graphics.

Although I was not in this subject during the first week, I took several notes to remember during designing phase.

SITE AND NARRATIVE Site: North and South Korea Border Along this “line� of seperation lies a joint Security Area for both sibling nation. The architecture express themselves in a peril way to the other side not to cross the line. This tension has cause uneasiness from both sides, suspecting and always beware of each other.

Our group is proposing to build a cafe on this border in order to create a space where talks of unification can occur.

Site: Korean Demilitarized Zone A strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea.

Process of finding cafe’s form Form-finding Model In this model we looked at using a diffrient material other then meshes and paper to see if the more flexible materials will have diffrient properties.

Paper Sketch Model The Grid is 45 degrees with the ground connection so that it will not disupt the flow of the walkway.

Chicken Net Model Based on the feedback from our lst session , our group added a edge support structure to the grids so that the structure wont have a jagged edge.

NEW DESIGN EXPLORATION

Design:

The design brief Site: Riverstone Estate Winery in Yarra Valley, Victoria.

Situated on the hill with panoramic view to the scenery. Very famous venue for wedding ceremony and receptions due to its hill side view.

The gazebo will be used for wedding venues and the area where the couple will perform the wedding ceramony. The placement of the gazebo is of to the side of the balcony so that it will not block the views of the distant hills.

In order to replicate the up down dynamic flow of the distant hills, I want to explore using grass hopper to create a dynamic form through segmentation.

INTRO Vladimir Shukhov’s Building for the Plate Rolling Workshop STRUCTURE BRIEF - In the year 1897, Russian engineer, Vladimir Shukhov built this production hall in the town of Vyksa.

- The production hall is on the vast premises of the Vyksa Steel Works, a manufacturer of metallurgical products, - This building entails the first doubly curved grid shell roof structure ever made.

- The construction with a footprint of 73.00m x 38.40m - Consists of five 14.60m wide bays, which are separated by four trussed arches.

DESIGN QUALITYS Materials: All members of the trussed arch are composed of steel angles and steel plates; all connections are carried out with rivets.

By moving a rotated circle section along a wide parabola line, Shukhov created the form for the very first doubly curved gridshell structure.

TECTONICS The reason Z beam are used to form the grid rather then i beams is because z beams allow more flexibility as it can rotate better.

Along the Chode of the arch, there are 25 connections where the grid structure is bolted on.

The support for the grid shell is provided by 8mm thick gusset plates, which are bolted to the top chord of the arch and bent upwards.

The grid shell is composed of two sets of inversely running Z-shaped (h = 80mm, b = 50mm, t = 7mm) steel sections.

The entire structure is made out of steel

The truss arches are connected to the ground through a flexible point connection on each of its ends.

At each of the longitudinal end of the building, there are truss arches however these are not flexible point connections but fixed connections to repell the exerted force created by the grid shells

Choosing Iteration In the end, Shaun and I decided do go with a mix of concept 3 and concept 2.

The reason we did not decide to do a double gridshell rather then a stand alone gridshell is because we wanted to preserve the 3 V Shaped columns that Nervi’s aircraft hanger had.

The idea for Concept 2 is if we continued with the formula for the apex of Shukhov’s roof shell structure so that it will reach the ground. After extending the curve, we then formed the genometric shape using the same method in the structural analysis.

Thai and I wanted to make a winery that does not distort the natural landscape view.

We researched the countour lines in the yarra vally area so that we can find a appropriate hill site to embbed our winery into.

We decided to choose this site as there is a 8m dip within a 60m area as people approach the Lake. On top of that, the Lake will provide a scenic view from the Winery facility.

Deciding Programs Communal Area / Reception Vine Yard - Biodiversity Rich Vineyard extending to the roof of the winery. Building form that will allow adequate production of grape vines however does not interfere with natural biodiversity.

In the end, instead of filling our space with many programs, we decided to get rid of some programs in order to focous on the experience for the main vinery programs. Thus we got rid of the suites and wedding venue.

During this weeks presentation, we tried to showcase the programs of our space through section sketches. However during feedback, one major thing we picked up was that there was no freeform structural experiences from within the winery.

The only free form structure is the roof which aims to mimic a hill.

Taking inspiration from South Lawn Underground Car Park and Stuttart 21 station, we explored ways we can integrate into our winery’s interior design.

We decided to use idea D as it allows more wider surfaces to walk on as well as provides accessability to visitors through its supporting edges.

After deciding on the interior aspect of our Design, we go on to look at how we can design the roof.

Week 6 Session 1: Mid Semester Refinements Part 2 - Further Developing Concept Ideas We decided that the perimeter walls makes our winery too much like a shoe box design. Hence we optimized the perimeter walls to follow the Y shape of the internal minimal floor.

Our most displayable program within the winery would be the productions area hence we wanted the middle minimal surface floor to act like a platform for visitors to view the production process from above.

We will be making holes on the outer shells for natural light access as well as allowing people on the roof to see inside.

The roof of our structure of our winery will be using our previous conceptualized “Hill Façade idea” (refer to page 24).

The only difference is that there will be columns similar to South Lawn Underground Carpark’s columns reaching down from the roof to meet the supporting edges of the minimal surface at a even level. This way the roof acts like a flat plain to the minimal surface.

On top of the roof, there will be a level of soil to support the growth of local flora.

1. One of the main feedbacks from our mid semester presentation is that the critics cannot understand our design based on our previous graphics. Hence we added details to our plan as well as made a intimidate level plan showing the location of each program on both levels.

EXPLODED The roof of the winery is a shell that allows flora to grow on it. This way it also mimics a hill. It also contains many holes which allows people walking on top to see the programs inside as well as let sunlight in.

The bottom half of the roof shell contains supporting columns which will meet the supporting edges of the minimal surface at a even level.

The winery contains a minimal surface which provides access from the ground level to the underground level and vice versa. The minimal surface floor hugs the production area to allow people to see how Pinot Noir is made from a higher level. It will also provide shade to the wine cellar which would be housed under it.

PLAN / SECTION IDEA 3 For the outline of the winery, we stuck with Idea 1 as we decided to focous on the curved edge of the lake hence leaving the other walls straight.

In Design A we decided to design the free form features in the winery.

For the interior columns we explored transferring the Stuttart 21 station idea explored in the previous weeks as seen in idea A.

Design B explored how to design the entry of the winery. Using Calavatra as a precedent, we looked at ruled surfaces and waves in order to create a porus space as seen in idea B.

PLAN / SECTION IDEA 4 In idea 4, the minimal surface is extended to the entry floor level to allow a larger flat surface to traverse on for the visitors. The basement level is accessed though the support legs of the minimal surface.

PLAN / SECTION IDEA 6 We decided to measure the interior space in our winery however afterwards we realised that the winery is way to large hence it is servely scaled down. Since the spanning side walls are reduced in our new plan, we decided to move the ruled surface feature to the lake face. The restaurant is now placed on the a platform extending out to the lake surface. The Ruled surface is designed to be slightly cantilevered to provide shade to the exterior restaurant.

BASEMENT PLAN

Section A shows a cut through the low point of the ruled surface. People can walk through this area to access the lake side restaurant.

SECTION B

Section B shows a cut through the raised point of the ruled surface. Due to the ruled surface being raised, visitors at the restaurant can see into the production area. Visitors can also walk up the ruled surface to access the roof of the winery.

Week 9 Session 1: REFINING IDEA 6 Instead of making the winery rectangular, we decided to design the entire winery to be curved so the Talponia inspired river face is more featured in the design. The ruled surface is also more cantilevered so that it is level to the platform hence providing more shade (4 meters).

The entry would be moved to the north side of the winery and the entire west side of the winery would have the landscape raised and continued over the roof.

Under Australian guildelines, stairs must include a rest.

If an opening is placed on the roof to allow people to exit, then there must be measures to prevent rain water from entering. The detail shows a sliding door that can be opened during visitor access hours and closed when it is raining.

Thai and I both think this idea is messy and is not very innovative hence we decided to reevaluate the design.

FURTHER REFINING IDEA 6 Instead of allowing access to the roof, the ruled surface is now a feature design which allows viewing access to the lake from the winery interior and views to the production from the exterior restraunt.

Making the ruled surface an exterior feature would also solve the water proofing problem.

Additionally we wanted to focous on the unique spaces between the raised ruled surfaces and explore programs to place in them. We decided to make them terraces so there would be planted greenery accompaning the view to the lake, another program would be sheltered extended dining areas from the restaurant.

It can be seen in this photo that the concrete surface sits on concrete beams or columns.

The ruled surface is anchored onto a steel reinforced concrete beam on both edges. A rain water drainage grate is used to fill the gap between the water surface platform and the concrete infill surface.

Week 10 Session 1: Form Work Detailing 10CM THICK CONCRETE For Bosjes Chapel, the form work is done by placing the timber supports first then layering plywood pannels on top. 2 layers of steel reinforcement are then placed before infilling with concrete. Our design will follow a similar process.

There are 2 access roads to the site from the main entry, red is for the visitors or staff while blue is for the trucks. The reason for the truck road access is in order for the truck to reach the truck loading bay more easier as well as to reduce contact and views from visitors.

There are 2 lakes in Denton’s Vine Yard. The reason we chose site 2 is because there is a large empty green space in front of it which will help reduce disruption of the existing vineyard.

The site chosen is the lowest point in Denton’s vine yard while Denton’s House is at the highest point.

This is so that dentons house easily viewable from the Pinot Noir Winery. The view is also enhanced by the grape vine’s direction.

Programme Diagram The winery is designed so the visitors don’t interrupt the wine making process but are still able to view it.

A rectangular mass is curved along the circumference of a circle. The circle edge as well as the curved rectangle ends once the circle becomes tangent with the edge of the lake

An exterior space is formed by lowering a section of the curved rectangle facing the lake. A extrusion on the side is formed to become the truck drop off

The shell which is a ruled surface, is geometrically formed and designed to face the center point of a circle

The landscape in the back of the winery is raised to meet the level of the roof in order to hide the winery

We chose this one as it is cantilevered enough as to provide shade reaching the edge of the decking while not being too high as to exposed itself above the 4m roof level too much.
