park district Dear Neighbors: I recently returned from the National Park & Recreation conference in St. Louis. It was a very invigorating few days networking with leaders in our field from all over the country. We always come back from these events with loads of great ideas to implement locally. Some are subtle ways we can adjust the way we serve our residents, others are new ideas that have worked in other areas of the country.

our mission

TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE HOMEWOOD-FLOSSMOOR PARK DISTRICT COMMUNITY THROUGH EXCEPTIONAL RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, FACILITIES AND PARKS WHILE PRACTICING ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP.

The keynote speaker this year was Dr. Scott Sampson, a passionate advocate for connecting people with nature. To me, the three most memorable things he said were: • • •

Youth today average between 7.5 and 10 hours of screen time every day Youth today average 7 minutes per day outdoors For the first time in history, today’s youth have a life expectancy of less than their parents

Dr. Sampson challenged us to think about our favorite place when we were growing up. Then he took a poll to see how many of those places were outside and nearly all four thousand of us indicated our favorite place was outdoors. If our kids are spending over seven hours each day on computers, smart phones and televisions, I have to wonder how many of them would say their favorite place is outdoors. After hearing these shocking statistics, our team started brainstorming ways we can think differently about motivating people to get outside. We already offer a wide variety of outdoor programs, but we think we can do even more. Last summer we hosted 14 Playground Playdates along with challenging residents to visit as many parks as possible with our Passport to Parks program. Sometimes you don’t need structured outdoor play and the Playground Playdates invited folks to different parks on a variety of days and times to get out and meet their neighbors. You will probably notice more outdoor activities in the future, and maybe they won’t be programs that are ordinarily offered outside. Winter can be a challenging time to get outside with shorter daylight hours and the crazy Chicago weather, but we encourage you to find way more than 7 minutes every day to enjoy some fresh air. We hope to see you often this season!

BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS The Board of Commissioners meets at 7 pm on the third Tuesday of every month at the Goldberg Center. The commissioners are (left to right): Brent Bachus, Dallas Collins, Vice President Steve Johnson, President Bob Haderlein and Debbie Dennison.

LEISURE SERVICES COMMITTEE The Leisure Services Committee is the H-F Park District’s citizens advisory committee that helps review, evaluate and suggest recreation programs. The following are members of the committee: Shannon Ford, Mary Hughes, Gerald Terrance, Lee Roe, Carla Porter-White, Calvin Harden, Sarah Chavez and Ryan Tracy.

SENIOR ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Senior Advisory Committee is an active group of senior adults interested in activities and programs for the senior community. Its members are as follows: Ron Baker, Helen BielGardner, Ray Callahan, Joyce Flaws, Donna Fogal, Mary Anne Henry, Elaine Smith and Brenda White.

REDUCE HEATING BILLS Heating equals about 25% of household utility bills and is a major contributor to a household’s emissions footprint. We can’t turn off the heat, but there are ways to help eliminate wasteful heating and maybe save a little money: • Switch to a programmable thermostat so your heater isn’t running when no one is home. • Seal air leaks around your windows and doors with caulking, weather-stripping and door sweeps. • Grab a blanket or put on a sweater ! It is far easier and cheaper than reaching for the knob or switch of the heater. • Let that precious sunshine in! On sunny winter days take advantage of this free heat and open up curtains and blinds to let that warmth in during the day. • Sometimes you don’t need to warm all the rooms in your house. Use other options to warm the rooms you use and keep the doors closed to the unused rooms.
