ISSUE 48 10th September 2010 On Saturday 7th August I was invited to watch the live show of Magic Numbers and to see the some of our children in 1KM perform. I was a member of the audience and got to see the pupils in 1KM that were filmed secretly with a talking guinea pig called George just before the summer holidays. The number of children that spoke to George created a magic number where you could win money if the number was one of the six in your telephone number. The children were really cute.

While I was there I got to see Emma Bunton, The Saturdays, Peridot and Eamon Holmes.

CONGRATULATIONS Two weddings over the Summer Holidays, the first one was Miss Carla Hammond’s who married Mr James Dolling on 6th August in Turkey.

The second, Miss Andrea Charalambous married Mr Charlie Charalambous in Cyprus on the 21st August.

We wish both happy couples all the best for their future lives together

History Memorial - City of Benares, remembering 70 years on — On Friday Sep-

tember 13, 1940 a passenger ship called City of Benares began its 2,500 mile crossing of the North Atlantic. On board were around 400 people, 100 of which were children. Some of these were PPPS pupils (listed right from our school log book) as part of the Children’s Overseas Reception Board (CORB). About 600 miles out in the North Atlantic, the ship was torpedoed by a U-boat. Some of the children got separated from their escorts and there was a rush for the lifeboats. The Benares was sinking fast, and the escort vessel had left them 21 hours before. The sinking ship was in danger of sinking the lifeboats themselves, several capsized, the sea was very turbulent. 5 adults and 77 children, 121 Crew died. This brought the overseas evacuation plan to a stop. No more children were sent overseas after this.

70 years since World War 2 — On the 2nd of September, Alan, a person who experienced World War 2 and ex-pupil came to our school as it has been 70 years since the war, to tell us some stories. Kurt Barling (an interviewer) and David (a camera man) from the BBC came as well to do some filming. Alan, Kurt, David, Mrs French and eight children from our school, all squeezed inside the tiny air raid shelter (It was very cold!). Then, that was when we all listened very carefully to Alan’s stories. One of them was about him picking up bits of exploded bombshell from the field and from a plane that crashed. After his stories of his experience as a child in World War 2, we got to ask him some questions about the war. It was interesting to find that, as a young lad, he didn’t find it scary, he found it exciting!

Besides all the stories, we all got to see a big, fat, green book. Inside was kept a school diary, which the head teacher would write in almost everyday. One day was especially sad when some children from our school (in the war) were evacuated to Canada in a ship but sadly, it got torpedoed. Seven children that were evacuated from our school, died. We are going to be on the BBC London News on the 17th of September.

WOW what has happened over the summer holidays……….

WOW – what has happened over the summer. Our junior hall has been updated, especially the stage which has been improved that now with our growing numbers means year 6 can sit up there, facing the other way (the rear wall has been painted) – giving more space on the hall floor.

We have a new ramp by the music hut – making it easier for pushchairs and the whole of the walkway outside year one has been resurfaced with tarmac creating a flat level. We also now have no steps and a new walkway by the year 2 Blue Classrooms. Lastly the reading recovery room next to the early years centre has had a fantastic makeover.

New Baby Due - Mrs Saad is going on maternity leave as she expecting a baby soon. We are looking forward to the arrival of her bundle of joy especially Maryam her daughter who will have a new playmate. Announcement and photo in the next issue.

Our summer playscheme was a great success with lots of children having fun – hopefully to repeated in future holidays.

CATERHOUSE — Tracy and her team look forward to seeing you in the canteen, menus available on line or copies can be found in the office. Lunches cost £1.90 a day or £9.50 a week

School Hours are 8.45am until 3.15 Please ensure children arrive on time to line up in the playground for collection by their teachers. Parents should say goodbye to their children here as no parents should be entering the school building, Our aim is to provide a safe and secure environment for our pupils. If you would like to see your child’s teacher they are available when you collect your child or you can make an appointment at the office if you would like a little longer. Please collect your children on time at the end of the school day and promptly after the clubs. Thank you.

We are very excited as permission has been granted for our new Surestart children's centre here at the school.The building works should start in November with completion at the end of March. It will be a fantastic facility for the school and local community.

We had some excellent SAT’s results in July so I have very high expectations of all my new Year 6. I am sure that you will be pleased to see all the changes around the school and will continue to help me take care of all the new things that we have. Animal Update — all the animals had a great summer, there was lots going on, they got a new hill to climb but they missed all the

children, especially Toffee, Fudge and Candy. The rabbits lazed around and the chickens got to play on a mini beach plus got some new friends in renamed quad— ‘the sensory garden’ an extension to the aviary with some new finches. Nursery’s Budgies kept an eye on the school office although they made it quite messy.

Ramadan - Muslims are fasting as Ramadan has started and will continue until Eid ul-Fitr about the 9th September. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year will be from sundown on September 8th until nightfall on the 10th. Autumnal Equinox, where the day and night will be equal will be on the 23rd September.

Ted had a great holiday, as year 5 having been learning ancient Greece he went off to explore Cyprus and found out all about the Greek Gods. He also went looking for hatching turtles on the beach at night.
