Hannukkak Assembly - year 4 performed a marvellous assembly about

The Grinch On Friday 9th, 5DR performed an assembly about the Grinch who hated Christmas. We all enjoyed the play and laughed a lot. When Christmas approached the Grinch despised it. They spoke clearly and so people could hear what they were saying from the back, and they also practised their lines well. The Nativity Play - On the Thursday 15th,, Reception took part in a play about the story of the birth of baby Jesus. During the assembly they sang many songs and acted as well. Many speakers had learnt their lines and spoke clearly and confidently. We were all very impressed with their performance! They repeated it again for their parents on Friday 16th and the hall was packed. Reporters: Deeva and Tia (6SS)

BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY—CHRISTMAS VOLUNTEERS — On the 2nd December five employees from

Lloyds Bank volunteered and one year 10 student from Preston Manor to come to the Children's Centre to decorate the Santa's grotto. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and felt that they gave back someVOLUNTEER READING SCHEME thing to the community.

He would like to say thanks to all the teachers at Preston Park for taking part in his research which explored the distinctive challenges faced by teachers in urban primary schools. Eventually he hopes to further probe this topic in a Ph.D.

LIZZY SHREDS— We noticed

that our friend Lizzy's skin was coming off, she is our class pet Lizard. Well it didn't come off in one day but came off completely the next day. The skin was in the cage so Miss Camprubi took the skin and put it in the bin. Now Lizzy is happy. They shed their skin because they are growing bigger. Reporter Rohan 4LC

HOMEWORK— My name is Zery I'm in 3CS. In the beginning of November our teacher Mrs Scott gave us a project about Ancient Egypt which we were suppose to write about the River Nile, the Mummy's, the Pyramids, Ancient Egypt Farming etc. So, I burnt some paper with my mum’s help to make papyrus and drew some pictures about Ancient Egypt I wrote some facts about all those subjects. Also I made myself as a Egyptian girl and put my picture at the end of my project page I hope my teacher will liked my hard work. Zery emailed us with her article and photo at heypresto@prestpk.brent.sch.uk, we are very impressed as is Mrs Scott.

D of E - My name is Neha Shamdas.

I am 14 years old and currently doing my bronze Duke of Edinburgh award. The award consists of four sections – a physical activity lasting three months, learning a skill for three months, volunteering for six months and then once I’ve completed all of that, a two day trek with one night of camping. I have chosen to do my volunteering section in Preston Park, because I was a former student of Preston Park Primary School. Where better to volunteer than here? I offer one hour every Friday in the after school club and find it extremely rewarding.

MRS SHAH’S RECIPE OF THE MONTH-Here is the recipe for the Basic Biscuit Recipe (sweet) Ingredients:50g / 2oz Sunflower spread, 25g / 1oz caster sugar,70g . Self raising flour (sieved). Method: Preheat oven to 180c / 350 f / gas mark 4. Grease baking sheet with sunflower spread. Next Cream sunflower spread sugar until pale and fluffy. Sieve the flour stirring it gradually into the mixture. Using you hands, gather the mixture into a soft dough. Roll into balls and place well apart on the baking sheet, dip a fork into cold water and flatten each ball to leave a pattern or you can roll out and cut into shapes with biscuit cutters. Bake for 12-15 minutes until pale and golden. Cool for 5 mins then remove from tray and place on a cooling rack to firm. ENJOY.

THE TEMPLE - On the 8th year 5 went to a temple. At first everyone including teachers in year 5

had to walk all the way to the train station, then we got on the train and then after the train ride we had to walk to the temple which was a long way. When we finally arrived there, the first thing we had to do was take off our shoes and coats. There was a special room for these. Later on we went to a room and two men told us about the history about Shri Swaminarayan their temple which was interesting. Then we got to go around the main area which was pretty. Next we went to another room where we asked questions about the statues of the gods. We learnt that the clothes the statues wear are made of silk, then it was time for the arti which was calm and peaceful. Then it was time to go back to school. Reporter Mathura 5DR

AIR CADETS

Due to a re-

cent electrical fire at their squadron the 78th Wembley have been temporarily using our canteen as a base.

Air Cadets are for girls and boys aged thirteen years and three months old. They meet on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 7:15pm to 9:45pm. If you have an older brother or sister who might be interested contact the school for details. The Commanding Office, Staff and Cadets would like to thank the school for helping with alternative accommodation.

An Author Visits - On Tuesday 6th an author came named Robin Jarvis, he came to talk to us about his books and how to become and expert on writing stories. He also read us a bit of one of his books, it was called the Dancing Jax. We will soon do a story project about it, At the end of it he is going to come back and give the winner a prize. Here is the winning story for last month’s create a Christmas story and have the chance to win an iPod nano! Mr Redpath and Mr Meleady announced the winner on the last day—here is the story emailed to heypresto@prestpk.brent.sch.uk An endless ocean of sand; stretching for miles in every direction; far beyond the eye could see… Vigorously, hordes of golden particles accumulated together, being attracted to a dune like bees to honey, whirling into a tornado. A sandstorm could vaguely be seen, brewing up around the North, approaching at breakneck speed. I needed to get out of here and fast. Luck no longer accompanied me; it was me, no one else but me. A sensation of helplessness dominated my body; there was no way I would be able to outrun the blinding outburst, if I were to survive, there was no choice but to confront it. Hope was skidding down the back of my brain; just when it was on the brim of falling off; it found a hook to cling onto.

Viciously, I plunged down into the sand, covering my dry face with a piece of cloth, so as to not get sand into my eyes: A survival technique that had been taught during Military Training. It felt as if I had just plummeted down into a pool of memories, recounting all the events that had taken place since I had been sent to Australia on a reconnaissance mission. There had been seven of us deployed to spy on the enemy encampment in the desert. It was supposed to be a two week journey and then back; that was the plan until yesterday, when a gale of dust split us all up; what happened to the others I don’t know…

After what seemed to be several hours, I regained my consciousness, thrusting the memories of the past to the back of my brain, focusing on what to do next. Over the week, the intense rays of sunlight had darkened my skin drastically making me wonder if anyone would be able to recognize me when I return, assuming that I would return. It was the 23rd of December, two days before Christmas; the day when I was going to see my family; for the first time in two years. A tear slithered out of my eye, rolling down my cheek onto my bottom lip as I desperately tried to convince myself that I would make it out alive.

Abruptly, the noise of stones clashing with each other caught my ear; someone was nearby! Cautiously following the source of the sound; I stealthily camouflaged with the sand inching forward; careful not to be spotted by humans and creatures alike. Slowly, a couple of blurry figures came into view, their silhouettes, exceeding three metres in length. Judging by the details visible in the shadows, there were about 9-11 Aborigines with spears and composite bows. Surreptitiously closing in, I meticulously examined the possessions being carried by the nomads; they had what I needed: A map and compass, although I seriously doubted that they would give it to me. The Aboriginal camp consisted of three tents making a hemisphere, guarded by four men; carrying spears; with their backs to each other. I lay in the sand no further than a couple of footsteps from the parchment with the Australian map on it, which rested peacefully on a burnished rock, along with the compass; however it wasn’t as easy as me just taking and running off with it, first I’d have to divert the attention of two astoundingly alert eyes, which hawkishly stared at it.

Slipping behind one of the tents, unnoticed; I grabbed a fistful of stones and chucked them in the opposite direction.

“Boy, they are stupid,” I murmured under my breath, watching all four of them sprint off as if they knew that’s what I’d wanted them to do.

“The sailing stones go North,” the parchment read; North, the direction that would lead to civilization. Following the tracks of the moving rocks, at dawn, on the 25th of December, I reached home. For the first time in two years, I got to experience how it felt like to celebrate with my family, singing carols, opening presents, staying up all night partying…

SINCE HALF TERM WE HAVE HAD CHICKENPOX IN SCHOOL BUT WHAT IS IT ? Chickenpox is a mild and common childhood illness that most children catch at some point. It causes a rash of red, itchy spots that turn into fluid-filled blisters. They then crust over to form scabs, which eventually drop off. Some children have only a few spots, but in others they can cover the entire body. The spots are most likely to appear on the face, ears and scalp, under the arms, on the chest and stomach and on the arms and legs. Chickenpox (medically known as varicella) is caused by a virus called the varicella-zoster virus. It's spread quickly and easily through the coughs and sneezes of someone who is infected. It is most common in children under 10 and 90% of adults are immune to the condition because they've had it before. To prevent spreading the infection, keep children off nursery or school until all the spots have crusted over. Chickenpox is most infectious from one to two days before the rash starts, until all the blisters have crusted over (usually five to six days after the start of the rash). If your child has chickenpox, try to keep them away from public areas to avoid contact with people who have not had it, especially people who are at risk of serious problems, such as newborn babies, pregnant women and anyone with a weakened immune system. Chickenpox in children is considered a mild illness, but expect your child to feel pretty miserable and irritable while they have it. Your child is likely to have a fever at least for the first few days of the illness. The spots can be incredibly itchy. There is no specific treatment for chickenpox, but there are pharmacy remedies which can alleviate symptoms, such as paracetamol to relieve fever and calamine lotion and cooling gels to ease itching.

In most children, the blisters crust up and fall off naturally within one to two weeks.

Father Christmas visits the Grotto at Little Kites — PPPS Children’s Centre On Wednesday the 14th a special visit came to hand our presents to the little children who loved meeting him and the parents enjoyed the performance of the choir as well as getting together and chatting over some nibbles.

The Choir Sings — the trip to Brook House Nursing OUR CHOIR— on the 12th some children did an Home centre was amazing as we sang a lot of different variety of songs. Some were in different languages such as Silent Night in German. We walked to Brook House Nursing Home in 20 minutes. We sang Jingle Bells, Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer, and Winter Wonderland. We got treats for our wonderful singing. It was very warm in there but the choir were wonderful. Reporter Aadya 5AH

The choir sang 4 pieces called Hey Hey we’ re the monkeys, Gaudebe, Silent Night, Winter Wonderland as well as this there were four solos and a group of four children paying their instruments. Football Match for Girls On Wednesday 7th December the girls in Preston Park versed two other primary schools which were Fryent Primary School and Kingsbury Green. First we were split into three groups. Next, the different groups played each of the schools. We played on the field and got very muddy but it was great fun. Fryent were the winners and got a trophy, Reporters Michelle, Archana, Damandeep and Mahek 3CS From Mr. Jarvis—’taking a very larger squad of 20 players , pp went to play Fryent and Roe Green primary schools on Weds 7th December. This was a year 6 match but PP had brought their entire Girls Football club made up of mainly Year 3 girls. The matches proved to be tough tests but PP got their games together in the end with team 1 winning two matches. Special mention to Zery who was fantastic in defence and Isabella who was a great Goalie. More Girls Football after Xmas. So why don't you come and join the Girls Football team? ‘

Mr Meleady is Marathon Man — he is now in training for the marathon which is a running race over a distance of 26 miles and 385 yards Mr Meleady is doing this for a charity called Children with Cancer UK. More in the next issue.

PCSO Tom Houlihan came to give year 1 and 2 a talk about staying safe on the roads on the 15th.

Most the children know Tom now and say hello when they see him on the streets.
