ALWAYS TELL AN ADULT! Reporters Amani and Shraya 6SB Congratulations to Preston Park Primary School who on Friday 20th November 2009 were awarded Home Access Primary School of the Year. We are all very proud of our 21st Century Home Learning Schemes running through Key Stage 2. All children have been provided with their own mini-notebook to use at school and at home to access a wealth of resources through our acclaimed MLE. Children regularly log-in to collaborate with their peers, complete online tests, upload homework to their teachers and much, much more. Miss Anazodo and Mr Redpath went along to Westminster to collect the award on behalf of Preston Park, where Mr Redpath also gave a presentation to more than 200 people explaining how the 21st Century Learning Scheme was conceived and just how it has impacted upon children's learning, motivation, behaviour and parental engagement. We now look forward to the 20th January when we launch the scheme to our Year 3 children and their families. On Monday 9th November we got our new trampolines and 6SB got to go on it first because they had the best attendance for the week, Mr Redpath thought this was a good reward for best attendance. Fire Alarms — On Tuesday 10th November while in my class we heard a loud noise, then we lined up as quickly as possible as we realised it was a fire alarm.

Next we walked sensibly down the corridor and stairs and went outside into the playground and had to line up. It was a drill or practise. Reporter Reece 4SB

Remembrance Day — I was really

We also saw many things used at the time of the Crimean war to make medicines such as: a small pestle and mortar, vanilla pods and ginger powder. Lastly Sara dressed up as a nurse and Antonio as a soldier. They looked great!

The boxes were collected on the 24th and we smashed our challenge. The whole school collected 147 boxes and £127.50 towards transport costs. We have given some happiness to 147 needy children in other countries.

RAINBOW PACKED HER TRUNK AFTER THE SAATCHI GALLERY COMPETITION - Mentoring and Befriending Foundation Elephant Voting. Unfortunately Rainbow our Elephant did not win, but still went on to further adventures. Rainbow joined other Anti Bullying elephants, designed by other schools, Nellie, Ellie, Billy, Shantih and Brook as they all packed their trunks from the Saatchi Gallery in London where they were all part of a national art exhibition. They have now trundled up to the north, to the Bolton Lads and Girls Club to spread their words of inspiration about the National Anti Bullying Week. Here the elephants met the Mayor of Bolton, the High Sheriff of Greater Manchester, the Lord Mayor of Manchester and Lord Mayor¹s Consort, the Mayor and Mayoress of Bury, the Mayor, Mayoress and Youth Mayor of Oldham, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale and the Mayor and Mayoress of Salford. Four of the elephants remained on display at the Saatchi Gallery for the next month. Rainbow will return to PPPS soon.

School Hours 3AW’s trip to the Gordon Brown Centre On Thursday 12th we went on a trip to the Gordon Brown Centre.

When we got there we met a lady

called Sophie. She was really nice and taught us how to do science experiments. We learnt that some soils get worn away quicker than others. Sophie took us to a place called the ‘Clay Pit’ where clay is dug. Before we left we got to visit the animals. We all really enjoyed our trip as it was fun in the countryside exploring the different types of soils. Reporter Michael

3NR’s Trip - We set off to the

coach at 8:40am and once we were settled we were off. It took 2 hours roughly to get to Gordon Brown.

When we finally arrived we met a member of the Gordon Brown team called Sophie. Sophie led us to the Shrubbery first and then she led us through the muddy way to the classroom. Here we talked about the different types of rock such as chalk, slate, limestone and granite. She showed us the rocks on the table and we organised them by size and then by colour. Then we had a rubbing test to see how soft the rocks were. We were timed for 40 seconds while we took turns with our partners to rub, we did chalk, slate and flint. We then did a water test. We ate our lunch outside around the campfire. After lunch Sophie talked to us about how soil is made and showed us different types. We then did an experiment with three different types of soil and some water. After the experiment we had to leave to get back to school. I had fun at Gordon Brown and thought the day was quite exciting because we learnt a new subject about rocks and soils By Kerosene

LEARNING ABOUT ROCKS AND SOILS — Our trip to Gordon Brown – we had a fun time because we went by coach but some found it boring. When we got there we looked at different soils they had. Two pupils had to carry a muddy bucket each with two different soils in them, we went to a bench and tested the two soils. We also got to see the goats and feel them, some of us were scared as they are bigger than the school ones. After that we got to see the hens. When it was lunchtime everybody was hungry and ate quickly as after we were learning about soil and rocks. We looked at limestone and slate.

2 SS’s TRIP TO GORDON BROWN EDUCATION CENTRE - We all had a fantastic time at the GB Education Centre, though it was a long drive there and back. We first went on a Nature Trail with Sophie and saw Lonely Larry (a tree that stands alone and has been struck by lightning!). We collected things in our 'memory pouches' along the way such as: pine cones and leaves to remind us of our walk. Then we went into a cosy classroom and made beautiful Christmas lanterns from tissue paper and glitter! After lunch we all went to see the animals around the centre. We met Thelma and Louise the two pigs, Caramel, Cinnamon, Sugar and Spice the Goats and Pyjamas, Forget Me Not, Goldie and DJ the chickens! Lastly with Sophie, Mrs Gupte and Mrs Saad's help we built Christmas Logs with the things collected in our memory pouches. We all hope to visit the Gordon Brown Centre again! Reporters 2SS

At the beginning of November Miss Anazodo wrote to parents and carers who we think are likely to be entitled to a Home Access Grant. Home Access is the government programme which will help to ensure that more children in statemaintained education in England have access to technology at home to support learning. The programme was born out of the recognition that there are still a significant number of learners who lack access to a computer and the internet at home. The programme will benefit over 270,000 households by March 2011 and initially the programme will target learners in years 3 to 9 inclusive.

Latest updates from both Becta and CAPITA, who will be administering the application process state that the telephone number which parents and carers can ring to gain an application form will open on 7th January 2010. We therefore urge to keep on checking Preston Park’s website for updates, in addition to visiting Becta’s website www.becta.org.uk/homeaccess or you can email Miss Anazodo at danazodo@prestpk.brent.sch.uk

RECYCLED LANTERNS

— Today we made amazing bright lanterns with the help of Joanna.

She is a great artist and she helped us create our lanterns. Firstly, we cut out two star shapes from our milk bottles, one for front and one for the back. We stapled both stars together, from one point. After, we cut out a strip measuring about 10-15 cm long and rolled it up and stapled it in between the two stars. We then cut shapes we liked from the front of our lantern star.

We could do something related to Christmas, Olympics, something symbolizing Wembley Stadium (the Olympics will be held in Wembley Stadium in 2012). Finally, something we all wanted to do ...paint and decorate our lanterns… Our lanterns looked as beautiful as the original ones... It was a great experience…SAUMYAA SINHA 5CD

Fluorescent Friday, Road Safety Week / Assembly — on

Friday the 27th we came to school in brightly coloured clothes, a non uniform day, to raise awareness about crossing roads safely especially now the darker evenings are here — BE SAFE BE SEEN. PC Tom from our Safer Neighbourhood Team spoke in our assembly about how to cross a road . Mrs French launched two competitions, colouring a lollipop person picture and writing a letter to request a school crossing patrol on the junction of Carlton East and College Road. Winners will be in the next issue.

Fluorescent Friday lunch — Caterhouse supported our themed day with a menu to match. Tasty Traffic Light Pizza colourful vegetables and scrummy Zebra Crossing Cake.

Pyramids - We have been learning about the Ancient Egyptians and pictured with me is a pyramid I made at home. To make one you need strong card x 4, building glue, brown paint and sand.

First you take the four pieces of card and cut into four equal triangles. Then stick then in the shape of a pyramid and paint them brown. Next you cover it in glue and sprinkle sand thinly over it and leave the whole thing to dry overnight. Alin 3AW

HSBC VOLUNTEERS - We are making a new garden by the infant playground helped by volunteers from the HSBC bank. They came on Monday 16th and have donated £500 towards the project. They helped carry railway sleepers (the very heavy pieces of wood in the picture) to create a raised flower bed which next year will have lots of colourful flowers. They weeded the area and worked very hard. Luckily it was a nice day and did not rain. It will be finished soon then we can plant. Reporters Anush and Simar 3AW

Dog Safety Assembly — On the Brent in Bloom- Penney French and Nicki Johnston collected

18th November a gorgeous dog with two ladies came to school. One of the ladies Anna told us how to look after a pet. She also told us what we should do when we meet a dog. If it is with it’s owner we should ask permission before we stroke it.

We should stroke it on it’s shoulder never on its head, it is good to let the dog sniff our hand first.

We are collecting money at Preston Park for the Mayhew Animal Shelter as during Anti-bullying week we found out animals also get abused. The donations will help homeless dogs, stray cats, and abandoned rabbits. Reporters Destiny 5CD & Faith 5SB. ***** We collected £75*****

We were presented with a certificate, a mayor’s trophy and a London in Bloom certificate. The school was awarded joint first with Leopald Primary and also received £70 of garden vouchers.

have been switching off everything we are not using. At school we have switched off lights, mini laptops, computer chargers and many more. More help with housing costs for working families More than 200,000 working families will gain about £1000 a year, thanks to new rules around Housing and Council Tax Benefits, making them an average of £20 a week better off. From Monday the 2nd November, income from Child Benefit will no longer be taken into account when calculating entitlement to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. This will mean more money for families already getting these benefits and other low income families becoming eligible for the first time.

Secretary of State Yvette Cooper said: "We want to do more to help families who are working hard to get by during the recession. Already tax credits make sure families are better off in work, but this extra cash is a practical way to make sure the benefits from working are even stronger. And it will help cut child poverty too." Both Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit can be claimed by customers who are working and this change will be an extra incentive to getting back to work. Currently, the average Housing Benefit award is £80 a week and the average Council Tax Benefit award is £15 per week. The Child Benefit disregard for Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit is one of a series of measures taken since the Budget 2007 that will see around a further 500,000 children lifted out of poverty – part of the Government’s commitment to eradicate child poverty by 2020. We were very lucky to have Teachers TV come as they wanted to find out about our intervention programs. Children from years 4 and 6 spoke about their notebooks, Mathletics and the Maths room on Fronter. They interviewed Miss Louca on how these programs help children progress. Mrs Patel and Miss Kirschner also spoke. So you might watch us on television soon.

any of you knew it was on channel 4. If you have been to Sainsbury’s you would have found a big box of 3D glasses and you could take a pair for free. At the weekend you could have watched Simpsons in 3D, the Queen, T4 and much more. It started on 16th November and finished on the 22nd November. Stuff on television begins to come to real life in 3D. It was totally and utterly amazing. By Sujith and Sivan 6RC. CRIME SCENE - On Saturday 14th November Preston Park was the scene of a break-in at the Nature Reserve. There were two males and one female. One of the males was wearing a green hoodie and the female was wearing a red coat and she had long black hair. They used wire cutters to break into the shed and stole £5, eighty-two teddies and a packet of Haribo sweets. They also overturned furniture and left beer cans. If you have any information call the school. A police press conference has taken place where year 6 asked questions to gather information. With this they have written a radio script.

This was a hoax organised by the year 6 teachers and police community support officers to aid the children to write a journalistic drama, giving them a realistic setting, they have written radio scripts .

Many children also heard rumours about the goats, who were also part of it. A report of their adventures on Preston Road after escaping from the school helped children with their persuasive writing to save them.

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men's health. Mr Jarvis took part but looks forward to shaving it off at the beginning of December.

Thursday’ took place and the weather was good. There were lots of games played – cheerleading, dodge ball, football, netball, trampolining and even speed stacking. Pupils from Claremont High School came to help us. Along with children in our school there were children from other primary schools:- Sudbury, Wembley, Mount Stewart Infants, Swaminarayan, Uxendon, Fryent, St Josephs, Byron Court, Park Lane and Mount Stewart Juniors. PE ASSEMBLY— On Friday the 13th November Mr Jarvis did an assembly to prepare for Big Thursday. He told us all about what was going to happen on the 18th November. He also gave out PE Certificates then twenty-three children took part in cheerleading choreographed by Rianne Chen. Luke in 6SB also showed us his skateboarding skills. It was fun and very enjoyable.
