Here is Why Your Mercedes Engine Stop Start is not Working?

But sometimes these features fail to work due to some problems in their system. Start stops system The start stops system makes the engine to turn off when the vehicle is stopped and restarts the engine quickly when the car moves again. So by this process, the fuel economy does not go down, unnecessary use of fuel is stopped and the emissions are also reduced. So the system uses a secondary battery and a robust starter motor. Here are certain symbols by which you can know the status of the start stop system  

If there is a green symbol of ECO then it has met the condition for auto stop, so when the car stops, the engine would shut down.

If there is yellow symbol of ECO then know that the start stop is working but it has not met the conditions If no symbol is displayed then know that there is some problem in the start stop system due to which it has become deactivated

This system is linked to the control unit of the car. It detects whether the brake pedal is pressed and car is in stationary or not and then sends signal to the control unit. So after receiving signal, it stops the fuel system from supplying fuel to the engine due to which the engine turns off. When the brake is released and the clutch is pressed, the start stop system detects it and makes the engine run again. So here, the fuel does not get wasted while you are not driving your car. So starting and stopping the engine from work is done by the start stop system automatically and you don’t have to do anything.

Basically the cars having start stop system possess a special type of battery that can handle more number of engine starts in its lifetime. Batteries of normal car are of such type that you can start your car 50000 times during car life while batteries used in cars having start stop has ability to startup the engine 500000 times during car life.

This start stop feature can be turned off by pressing the ECO button or a button having ‘A’ on it enclosed by a circle.

The start stop monitors the activities of brake, clutch and gear of your car. It also monitors the behavior of battery. So if the battery is faulty then your start stop feature may not work.

Start stop function uses the power from your battery to turn on and turn off your car, if your battery is weak and draining energy or not getting charged properly, then the start stop car detect this problem deactivates itself by which the energy from your battery would last for more time. In most of the cases a faulty battery is the one which makes the start stop feature off, so whenever you find that your stop start feature is not working, then first take a look at your battery, check if the acid quantity is normal or low. You can also test the battery voltage by a voltmeter or a multi meter.

How to know that your start stop is not working?  

No symbol of ECO is displayed Your engine idles but doesn’t switch off when you stop the car

Conditions for working of start stop in your Mercedes If your start stop function is not working then check whether any of the following condition are fulfilled or not. If any of the condition is not satisfied then the start stop would not work.            

Hood must be closed Driver’s door must be closed The temperature of transmission oil should be higher than 10oc but lower than 120oc.

Driver should fasten his seat belt.

The engine coolant temperature should be higher than 60oc but lower than 115oc.

Vacuum should be sufficient in the brake booster.

ABS and hill start assist should be inactive The temperature of the battery should be between 5oc to 60oc.

Catalytic converter should not be at high temperature Angle of the steering wheel to the center position should be less than 90o.

The voltage of the alternator or the battery should be more than 11.3v Ambient temperature should not be more than 35oc

Conclusion You have to make sure that all those conditions have been met and first of all check the battery. If you know that you have a faulty battery, then it is better to turn off the start stop feature.
