Battery location

The batteries are accessible after opening the engine hood (Fig. 1). The batteries are located on the right-hand side of the engine. The system voltage of 24 V is supplied by two 12 V batteries connected in series.

Shut off the engine before removing the batteries to prevent damage to the alternator and the regulator or to electronic modules. Turn the electrical system key-switch to "0" and withdraw the key. Disconnect and reconnect the battery terminals in the described order. Disconnecting and reconnecting in the wrong order may result in shortcircuits.

Cut out the battery main switch (positive lead interrupted) and remove the switch lever.

Battery installation

Before installing the battery, clean the battery posts and the pole terminals down to the bright metal. 1. Install the new battery. 2. Refit the battery holder (A, B, Fig. 2) and tighten the screws. 3. Connect the pole terminal to the positive post (Fig. 1) of the battery and tighten the screw. 4. Re-install the jumper cable between the batteries and tighten the screws of the pole terminals. 5. Connect the pole terminal to the negative post of the battery and tighten the screw. 6. Apply a special grease or acid-free vaseline on the battery posts and on the pole terminals.

To prevent damage, do not use force when tightening the screws of the pole terminals.

Loose or corroded pole terminals will cause overloading of the alternator and the regulator.

Fig. 1 3100545.00 1. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery (Fig. 1). 2. Remove the jumper cable between the batteries. 3. Disconnect the positive terminal of the batterie. 4. Insulate the battery posts. 5. Remove the battery holders (A, B, Fig. 2). 6. The batteries can now be removed from the baseplate.
