IntroductiontoMaserati
Auto-Normalmode:
In Auto mode the gearchangeismanagedcompletelyautomaticallybythe transmission electronic controlsystem. The controlunitdeterminesenginespeedand moment ofthe shiftaswellasitsspeed, basedon parameters suchasvehiclespeed, enginespeedand the driver's requestfortorqueand power. In AUTO mode a gear can alsoberequested manuallythroughthe paddlesbehindthe steeringwheel(gearsuggestion).
The system recognisesthe typeofdriver by meansoffunctionsthatassessthe driver's style ofdrivingthroughlateraland longitudinalaccelerationand acceleratorpedal movement. Ifa sportierdrivingstyle isrecognised, the "UP" shiftsare movedtoa higher numberofenginerevs. The controlsystem alsorecognisesthe typeofroad, adapting gearchangeswhenthe road climbsor falls, on a bend, in townand on motorways.
AUTO NORMAL mode isthe mode mostdesignedforcomfort: changingtoa highergear isrequiredassoonaspossiblein ordertoobtainthe lowestlevelofvibrationsand acousticreturnfromthe engine. Shiftingis managedin sucha way astoensurethatgear changesare ultra-smooth. Thismode alsoensureslowerfuelconsumptionwhen combinedwitha normaland non-aggressivedrivingstyle. Thisdoesnotmean, however, havingtogiveup on the car's sportynature: duringsports driving, withfrequentopening ofthe throttle, gearshiftspeedsapproachthoseofthe AUTO SPORT mode.
In AUTO mode, the engagedgearwillbeindicatedon the info display on the instrument cluster.
Auto-Sport mode:
AUTO SPORT mode isactivatedwiththe transmissionin auto mode and bypressing the SPORT buttonlocatedon the centredashboard: gearchangingisstillmanaged automaticallybythe transmissioncontrolunit, butbyvaryingthe speedofthe operations toopen up and reduce torque, disengage, selectand engage gear, closethe clutchand restoreenginetorque. The resultisa fastergearchangeand a more sportydrivingfeel.
ComparedtoAUTO NORMAL mode, shifting up takesplaceat higherenginespeeds, whereasmovingdown a gearisaccompaniedbya more pronounceddoublede-clutching effect.
Icemode:
Thismode can beusedon particularlyslipperyroad surfaces(snow, ice), or more generallyin low-gripconditions. Itisactivatedthroughthe ICE buttonlocatedon the centretunnel. Whenswitchedon, the system avoidshavingtorunthe engineat more than 3,000 rpm.
ICE mode takespriorityoverSPORT and MSP OFF modes: thismeansthatwhenthe driver requeststhe ICE mode, Sport mode isdeactivatedautomatically(ifitwason) and the stabilitycontrol(MSP) restored(ifpreviouslydeactivated).
Automatic mode with Easy-exit:
The default configuration of the gearbox is Automatic mode. If requested, the Auto mode can be switched off (and Manual mode activated) by pushing the “Auto”button on the centre console.
If the engine is switched of with the gearbox in Manual mode, atthe next engine start the system will activate the “Automatic with Easy-exit”configuration. This configuration will last for two minutes during which the “Auto”indication on the info display will flash. If during this period while the car is driving a gear is selected manually, the gearbox will exit the Auto mode en go to Manual mode. If during this time no gearchangerequest is made, the gearbox will go to Auto mode.
Note: forwhatconcernsthe “Sport”and “Ice”modes, at enginerestartthe robotized gearboxconfigurationisthe sameaswhenthe enginewasswitchedoff.
4. BrakingSystem
The Maserati GranTurismoS isfittedwitha high-performancebrakesystem, whichuses dual-casttechnologyforthe frontbrakediscs, developedin collaborationwithBrembo and usedforthe first timein the automotivefield on the Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S. In contrasttoconventionalcast-irondiscs, the dual-castdisc consistsofa cast-iron brakingring and analuminiumhub, making itpossibletocombine the advantagesoffered bycast iron's performance at temperature withthe aluminium's light weight.
At the front, the dual-castdiscs(360 x 32 mm) are combinedwithsix-pistonaluminium monoblocbrakecalipersofdifferentiateddiameter(30/34/36 mm), withFerodo HP1000 pads. The monobloccalipersare more resistanttodeformationthancalipersmadeoftwo parts; thismeansthatlightermaterials, in thiscase aluminium, can beusedand componentweightminimisedevenfurther. The caliperisalsomore efficientat any operatingpressureand thistranslatesintolighteruseofthe pedalusewhenbraking.
At the rear, 330 x 28 mm discs are fittedwith4-piston calipersofdifferentiateddiameter (32/36 mm), and Jurid673 GG pads.
The brakecalipersfittedasstandard on the Maserati GranTurismoS are red. The customermaypersonalisethe colourofthe calipersbyselectingfromoneofa further5 alternative shades: Titaniumand Yellow fora more sportylook, Silver and Bluefora more elegantconfiguration, or the classicBlack.
The brakingsystem in the Maserati GranTurismoS alsofeaturesABS, whichpreventsthe wheelsfromlockingup whenbraking, and EBD forbetterdistributionofbrakingforce betweenthe frontand rearwheels, bothintegratedwithMSP Bosch version8.0.
MSP system:
The GranTurismoS is fitted with the Bosch ESP 8.0 system which incorporates the following functions: ABS, EBD, TCS, ASR, ESP and Hill Holder. Functionality is identical to the system used in other Maserativehicles.

Steeringdiameter(frompavementto pavement): 10.7 m.
Gearshift paddles behind the steering wheel are longer as those on the standard GranTurismomodel to improve the control during cornering.
6. Suspensions and Wheels
Single-ratingsportssuspensiontoenhancethe sportydrivingfeel
The Maserati GranTurismoS offersthe samesuspensionlayout asthe 4.2 L engine version. However, italsofeaturesa specialdevelopmentdesignedtoreallyexploit the greaterpoweroutput ofthe 4.7 V8 and harnessthe capabilitiesofferedbythe Transaxle system.
The Maserati GranTurismoS isfittedasstandard withfixed-ratingsteel dampersmodified withthe introductionofnewspringsand dampers, whichoffer10% more dampingforce and are repositionedin termsofcompression/extensionratioso as tomatch the car's differentspecification. The diameterofthe reartorsionbar hasalsobeenincreasedto makeitmore rigid.
Thesemodificationshaveresultedin a 10% reductionin body rollwhich, combinedwith the excellentweightdistribution, makesthe Maserati GranTurismoS particularlyagile and responsivetodriver instructions: in a successionofbendsitappearsquickand intuitive whenenteringand findingthe centreofthe bendand speedywhennegotiatingthe bend. Furthermore, the driver can accelerate earlierwhencomingout ofthe benddue tothe reducedloadtransfers.
As analternative tothe standard fixed-ratingsuspension, the Maserati GranTurismoS maybeprovided, uponrequest, withSkyhookelectronic controlsuspensionsfeaturing aluminiumbody damperswithcontinuousdampingvariation; in thiscase the hardware modificationsare accompaniedbyspecialmanagement software.

Optional Skyhooksuspension:
The Skyhookelectronic suspensionmanagement system isabletocontinuouslymonitor the suspensiondamping: the system actsthroughaccelerationsensorswhichrecord the movementsofeachwheeland thusensurethatanysurfaceunevennessisabsorbedand the highestlevelofcomfort guaranteed.
A furtheradvantageofthe Skyhookelectronic suspensioncontrolsystem isthatthe driver can choosefromtwodifferentsettings: Normal, whichallowstravelwiththe highestlevel ofdrivingcomfort, and Sport, whichgivesa harderride settingwithmore reducedroll anglesand loadtransfers, therebyenhancingthe agilityand stabilityofthe carbody. In the Sport configurationthe handlingofthe Maserati GranTurismoS iscomparablewith thatguaranteedbyfixed-ratingdampers.

7. Safety Components
In analogy with the MY09 Quattroportemodel, also the GranTurismowill introduce the new “intelligent LRD”-type front passenger airbag. This new type of airbag is fitted on the new GranTurismoS 4.7L Automatic and will shortly after be introduced on the existing GranTurismo4.2L Automatic and GranTurismoS models. See the part of the MY09 Quattroportefor more detailed information.
Note: all airbags are specific for each model, as they are tailored on the interior design.
8. Electrical systems and Devices
Parking sensors
Withthe ignitionkey in the ON position, the frontand rearparking sensorsare activated automaticallywhenreverse gearisengaged.
