The isolation adapter is an MSHA-approved Intrinsically Safe device used to separate the power groups and prevent intermingling of power between shield power groups. There must be an isolator in the network between every power supply box and the next power supply box to maintain MSHA compliance. The isolator is housed in a stainless steel box and sealed with a silicone potting compound. Although power does not pass through the isolator, data is passed through by using optical components in the internal circuit. The cable coming from the red painted end of the isolator always connects to the PMC-R A1 Bidi port which is on the bottom row of connectors on the same end as the red Quickstop button. If the isolator is installed backwards, there will be a broken network at this location.

The SKK-24 Hose Cable is a mine-duty cable constructed with an armored hose conduit, internal wiring, and a four-wire connector on each end. A brass staple-lock fitting is used to mechanically secure the connection; the brass ends allow approximately 355 degrees of rotation. This cable is used to connect all pressure sensors to the PMC-R.

The SKK28 Hose Cable is similar to the SKK24 hose cable except that it uses a larger diameter conduit hose and it provides an eight-wire connector at each end. This cable is used for the “Bidi” connection between PMC-Rs. The additional conductors in the SKK28 cable allow it to carry sufficient current to power the luminaires that are connected to the PMC-R brass bar. This eliminates separate shield-to-shield lighting cables.

The pressure sensor developed for the PMC-R is an MSHA-approved Intrinsically Safe device with low power consumption and the strength to absorb extremely high pressure spikes without sustaining damage. This sensor can measure hydraulic pressures up to 600 bar with 5% accuracy and can withstand pressures up to 1000 bar. The hydraulic connection is a DN10 staple-lock fitting that is usually connected directly to the leg check assembly on the shield. The sensor is electrically connected to the PMC-R using an SKK24 hose cable. The cable provides both the power and signal connection between the PMC-R and sensor. The cutaway view above shows the SKK24 electrical connection on the left and the DN10 hydraulic connection on the right. An amplifier integrated into the pressure sensor housing ensures that in the measuring range of 0 - 600 bar the respective output voltage of 0.5 – 4.5V is generated, as shown below:
