D. Principles of breaking

To increase breaker working life, pay special attention to use correct working methods and to choose correct tool for the job. There are essentially two ways of breaking with a hydraulic breaker.

a) Penetrative breaking (or cutting)

In this form of breaking, a tool such as moil point or chisel is forced into the material. This method is very effective in soft, layered or plastic, low abrasive materials.

b) Impact breaking

With impact breaking, the material is broken by transferring very strong mechanical stress waves from the tool into the material. The best possible energy transfer between the tool and the object is achieved with blunt tool. Impact breaking is very effective in hard, brittle and very abrasive materials. The use of moil point or chisel in impact breaking hard material will cause too fast wearing on the sharp edge.
