For those of you born between 1946– 1964, life’s no longer about growing old gracefully; it’s about living a passionate life in retirement and celebrating your lifestyle! There are 5.3 million baby boomers, making up 24 per cent of the population, with the oldest turning 66 this year. With the end of World War 2 in 1945, Australia’s servicemen and women returned and family life resumed after an interruption of almost six years of wartime conflict. Nine months later saw the start of a population revolution as childbirth rates soared - more than four million Australians were born between 1946-1965. People born during this period became known as Baby Boomers who changed Australia (and the world) in the second half of the 20th century. A look back... 1940’s - 1943 – Australia wins its first Oscar, with cinematographer Damien Parer (pictured) honoured for documentary Kokoda Front Line! The Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme is introduced in 1944 providing subsidised medicine to all Australians; In 1945 the Liberal Party of Australia is established with Robert Menzies as its first leader; Australia becomes a founding member of the United Nations. In 1945 The Sydney-Hobart Yacht Race is held for the first time, and in 1949 Construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme begins and In January 1947 Bernard “Doc” Neeson frontman of Australian Music Legends – The Angels was born in Belfast England. In the 1950’s baby boomers represented a new

market whose needs were quickly met due to wartime advances in technology and a new economic optimism. In 1955 The first vinyl LP (long playing) appeared with the release of Bill Haley’s Rock around the Clock -thus began a new and different music called Rock and Roll. Australian bands like Johnny O’Keefe and Col Joye began playing the new music, Blue jeans and t-shirts became the fashion, Comic books were the literature of youth and the Hula Hoop started twirling. 1956 Television in Australia was launched and Hotels in New South Wales no longer had to close at 6pm, ending the “six o’clock swill”. In 1953 AC DC’s Malcolm Young was born in Glasgow Scotland. In the 1960’s Jean Shrimpton shocked us in her mini skirt at the Melbourne Cup, and then rapidly became the fashion; the Peace Movement began – Woodstock 3 days of peace, love and music. Since the movement in the 1960s, hippie culture has been assimilated by mainstream society. Moratorium marches across Australia opposing the Vietnam War; Beatlemania hit Australian shores in 1964; Evonne Goolagong became a world-beater in tennis; Great Olympians during the 1960s include Murray Rose and Betty Cuthbert

and Dawn Fraser; Prime Minister Holt drowns and is succeeded by John Gorton; talkback radio is introduced; Ronald Ryan becomes the last person legally executed in Australia. On 14 February 1966 the Australian currency is changed to dollars and cents, with the Australian Dollar replacing the Australian pound. In 1969 the Australian production of the rock musical Hair premieres in Sydney; top pop groups The Easybeats and The Twilights break up; In the 1970’s Johnny Farnham was singing Rain Drops Keep Falling on my Head, Led Zeppelin had a Whole Lotta Love, Abbamania hit our shores in the mid 1970’s and Daddy Cool hit the No 1. Charts with Daddy Who? Daddy Cool. Colour television was introduced in 1975, men wore flares, grew beards and sideburns and Disco was dancing. In 1974 the introduction of FM Frequency radio and in 1970 Adam Hill radio and TV personality was born.

From Hula Hoops and Pogo Sticks to Yo Yo’s and Frisbees, Disco and Line Dancing to the Twist, the Stomp and Rock n Roll, Woodstock and Flowers, Bikinis and Mini Skirts; Baby Boomers have generally lived through the best times of the 20th Century! 3

Computer Savvy with George Kimpton How to get started with Windows 7 – Part 1 (continued next month) OK, so you’ve switched on Windows 7... but where do you go from there? Anyone transferring from Vista will feel a bit at home because the new START button is there in the bottom left, The Windows symbol, but again what next? At this point you can type an instruction instead of bringing up the old RUN command. Apart from that selecting a program is pretty straight forward By clicking on All Programs or if you wish poke around in the old compartments like CONTROL PANEL, COMPUTER and of course HELP.

In some ways it has been changed to make

Finding it may require different tactics as I have discovered depending on the version of Internet Explorer you are using and other factors. Just since starting to write this article things have changed in the way you access “Getting Started With Windows 7” in Windows 7. See the Help Window picture here which I started with.

it easier to find and do some things but you need to know how to stumble across the tricks which have been added and which can be very different to Windows XP or earlier. In this way I suppose Windows 7 can be said to be easier than previous versions when it comes to doing some things but unless you know how to access these tricks it can be harder than previous versions to navigate.

In some instances the lower half of the window labeled “More On The Windows Website”, which here offers the two lower choices, including the one I recommended will just refer you to a Microsoft web site instead of direct to the video as It did initially for me and you will wizz away to a new web page where you need to choose first “HELP and How To” and then “Windows 7”. Here you will find lots of videos to help.

When you select HELP you are given a choice of several topics but to my mind the best one to get started with is Getting

First up when you find it “Getting Started” explains the way the task bar has changed and the old Quick Start area has gone...

From past experience most people don’t like using or buying books so lets have a good look at the alternative because lets face it Windows 7 is not all that friendly unless you delve into it and get to learn the tricks.

Off the beaten track... Image courtesy Free Spirit Caravans 9

Off the beaten track with a Free Spirit Free Spirit Caravans think outside the square when it comes to off road... Australia is indeed the “Lucky Country”. Where in the world can you step out your front door and within hours see the most breathtaking scenery all around you?... beautiful sun drenched beaches, experiencing nature first hand by watching turtles hatching, feel the humidity of glorious rain forests and witness the unbelievable sights of the Bungle Bungles – a land that time forgot. We live in a spectacular land. It seems fitting then that a company whose name evokes the very essence of ‘freedom to explore’ has set out to enable us to experience first hand all this beautiful land has to offer – whilst further utilising our natural elements for our benefit i.e. solar panels for energy. Offering us the opportunity to become FREE SPIRITS. Free Spirit Caravans is an off road caravan company who have worked extensively on R&D to produce a fully self-sustainable caravan that can tackle our glorious outback with ease (See the video at www.freespiritcaravans.com.au) whilst in the lap of luxury, even in the outback! Free Spirit’s un-paralleled design and innovation has led to the creation of an incredibly strong yet essentially LIGHTER off road caravan. The likes of which are arguably un-rivalled. Their 16’ model weighs only 1.6 Tonne tare (lighter than some camper trailers!) – inclusive of shower, toilet, cooking facilities, T.V., 10

satellite, generator and even washing machine and air con! This can be towed by only a 4 cylinder turbo...amazing but true. These caravans are built entirely by skilled craftsmen, not on a production line. They are built with longevity in mind. The choice of design and materials, e.g. chassis design, aluminium, honeycombed flooring etc means these caravans will far outlast any competitors’ life span. Free Spirit’s models are guaranteed to be 300-500kg lighter than any other off road caravan. The usual wooden interior has been replaced by aluminium, which is ‘in-laid’ into their fibre glass wall panels; creating a strong but much lighter product. It is also impressive to see how Free Spirit use space. The slide out shelving system is the pantry means no space is left unused. Although the internal cabinetry is aluminium to stop wood rot and reduce

weight, the actual finishes of the kitchen and dining area are second to none, with Tassie oak doors or 2 pack finishes on offer as well as leather seating. Attention to design and detail is paramount to this company and is even further echoed in the interior design; which is completely colour schemed from

wood but a honeycomb composite material for strength, durability and of course another facet of their constant attention to reducing weight. If innovation is the way forward for companies of the future then this company is set on ‘fast forward’ for the path ahead.

which they call their ‘foundation stone’

Even our own Australian Institute of Commercialisation has awarded this company with a Scholarship in Innovation – only offered to three Australian Companies a year. This is a fantastic achievement for such a young company. When Free Spirit Caravans is asked to ‘innovate’ they don’t just think ‘outside the square’ they ‘invent a new one’.

even the flooring they use is not the usual

the choice of flooring to matching bench tops and even bedding and cushions – beautiful, luxurious finishes already matched in textures and colours. Free Spirit’s innovation begins with their patented design chassis (no weld of the A frame to the chassis = no weakness)

Boomer Book Reviews The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

hey!

by Deborah Moggach $19.95 RRP (ISBN: 9780099572022) When Ravi Kapoor, an over-worked London doctor, is driven beyond endurance by his disgusting and difficult father-in-law, he asks his wife: ‘Can’t we just send him away somewhere? Somewhere far, far away.’ His prayer seems to have been answered when his entrepreneurial cousin, Sonny, sets up a retirement home, recreating a lost corner of England in a converted guesthouse in Bangalore. Travel and set-up are inexpensive, staff willing and plentiful - and the British pensioners can enjoy the hot weather and take mango juice with their gin. These Foolish Things is a brilliant comedy of manners, mixing acute observation with a deeper message about how different cultures cope in the modern world.

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman $32.95 RRP (ISBN 9781742755700) This is a story of right and wrong, and how sometimes they look the same .... 1926. Tom Sherbourne is a young lighthouse keeper on a remote island off Western Australia. The only inhabitants of Janus Rock, he and his wife Isabel live a quiet life, cocooned from the rest of the world. One April morning a boat washes ashore carrying a dead man and a crying infant - and the path of the couple’s lives hits an unthinkable crossroads. Only years later do they discover the devastating consequences of the decision they made that day - as the baby’s real story unfolds. 32

What Women Want by Nelly Thomas $34.95 RRP (ISBN: 9781742754888) With all the moxie of an RSL barmaid and the library card of a research fellow, Nelly Thomas has emerged to talk about nothing slighter than the trials of her generation... She’s erudite, earthy and entirely unemployable. Helen Razer - The Age (review Melb Comedy Festival) Growing up in post-feminist Australia, Nelly Thomas, one of Australia’s most gifted and natural comedians, was told she could ‘have it all’. She’s giving it a crack – but she still isn’t quite sure what ‘it’ is. What do women want? In pursuit of answers, Thomas has tried being a telemarketer, a professional student, a fast-food worker, a broadcaster, a smoker, a prostitute’s confidant, a health advocate, a reality television obsessive, a mother, a partner (or is it girlfriend? lover?), an award-winning comedian, a sex-educator, a Loony Lefty Feminista and a self-confessed fatty boombah. Like many of her generation, she’s had a lot of options, yet she’s wondering – which do you choose? In this hilarious part-memoir, part-manifesto, Thomas navigates the murky waters of her life and womanhood in the twenty-first century. She tackles the big contemporary issues – career, equality, family, porn, sex, entertainment, obesity, parenting, culture, class, Beyonce’s derriere – with customary insight and a wickedly dry wit. A must-read for the modern Aussie woman.

The Night Circus by Erin Morganstern $32.95 RRP (ISBN: 9781846555244) A magical love story and a story about the love of magic, set in a fantastical circus in the late nineteenth century where two magicians battle for supremacy In 1886 a mysterious travelling circus becomes an international sensation. Open only at night, constructed entirely in black and white, the Cirque des Rêves delights all who wander its circular paths and warm themselves at its bonfire. There are contortionists, performing cats, carousels and illusionists - all the trappings of an ordinary circus. But this is no conventional spectacle. Some tents contain clouds, some ice. The circus seems almost to cast a spell over its aficionados, who call themselves the rêveurs - the dreamers. And who is the sinister man in the grey suit who watches over it all? Behind the scenes a dangerous game is being played out by two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who, at the behest of their masters, are forced to test the very limits of the imagination - and of love. The Night Circus is an extraordinary blend of fantasy and reality.
